Family Contexts of Academic Socialization: The Role of Culture, Ethnicity, and Socioeconomic Status

Family contexts of academic socialization have received growing attention as a way to facilitate the educational development of children and adolescents. The goal of this special issue is to present comparative and complex perspectives about the roles of culture, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status (SES) in multifaceted academic socialization processes from preschool to college. This introduction discusses the roles of culture, ethnicity, and SES in family academic socialization processes, summarizes various themes across the five articles in this issue, presents brief overviews of each article, and addresses future directions of these lines of research.

Programa Rede Comunitária: integrando saberes sociais e acadêmicos para o desenvolvimento humano

O Programa de Extensao Rede Comunitaria do Câmpus Curitiba do Instituto Federal do Parana (IFPR), atuou com criancas e adolescentes em situacao de vulnerabilidade social, realizando oficinas socio educativas semanais no contra turno escolar. O objetivo desta acao foi contribuir para o desenvolvimento humano, social e educacional das criancas, adolescentes e educadores de projetos sociais, bem como dos alunos e docentes do IFPR, promovendo a integracao de saberes e praticas. Analysis of child deprivation in India: Focus on health and educational perspectives

Children in many societies are found vulnerable to adverse socio-economic conditions, which usually undermine their growth and rob them of schooling opportunities. Without the availability of proper nutritional diet and full immunization, children suffer from underweight, stunted and wasted growth relative to their age. Poverty also weakens health and educational development of children. Principal Component Analysis has been applied to calculate a health related deprivation index for children. A recursive simultaneous equation framework has been used to explain the variation of health deprivation of children as well as educational deprivation across the major Indian states, on the basis of some identified explanatory variables. The health deprivation index’s empirical analysis reveals that factors such as poverty, female literacy rate, low body mass index of mother and full antenatal care, have significant association with the level of deprivation. The dropout rate of children is considered as reflective of their educational deprivation. Household characteristics of the deprived children indicate that female literacy, poverty, availability of electricity, gender of household’s head, fuel collection activity and children health status significantly influence the extent of their educational deprivation. This calls for urgent implementation of different government schemes for promoting better health and education of children of identified poor and deprived families.

Revisión bibliométrica del rechazo escolar: perspectivas de investigación y su análisis

El rechazo escolar es una de las problemáticas educativas que interfiere negativamente en el desarrollo social y educativo del niño. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la productividad científica sobre rechazo escolar durante el periodo 2004- 2013, con la finalidad de ofrecer una descripción global del estado actual de la investigación sobre rechazo a la escuela y comunicar las últimas aportaciones científicas. La búsqueda bibliográfica se realizó mediante cuatro bases de datos internacionales obteniendo una muestra de 345 trabajos. Los resultados obtenidos<br />indicaron un crecimiento progresivo de los niveles de productividad y destacan el interés científico por los estudios dirigidos al tratamiento del rechazo escolar y los factores de riesgo asociados al absentismo. Este estudio bibliométrico permite conocer la evolución que ha seguido la investigación sobre rechazo escolar durante la última década, sirviendo como marco de referencia para futuras investigaciones que precisen conocer aquellas tendencias de estudio más desarrolladas junto a las líneas de investigación emergentes, las cuales requieren ampliar sus estudios y una consolidación científica.

Teachers Dealing with Learning Difficulties during the Process of Schooling

This paper presents a survey that aimed to detect the main learning difficulties presented by children and adolescents who received care in a psycho-pedagogical support service of g to a university in Rio Grande do Sul, between 2011 and 2012. The theoretical framework takes into account authors of Pedagogy, Psychology, Educational Psychology and Inclusive Education. Data collected from medical records of 28 children were analyzed using Content Analysis. The results show a high rate of affective and emotional difficulties of these children. The findings demonstrate the importance of understanding the role of emotional processes in the development of learning disabilities. In addition, it is necessary to reflect on teacher education that problematizes this issues. Education should not be limited to the ownership of a technical instrumental that offers a recipe for efficiency. The development of an appropriate education for children with emotional difficulties necessarily requires a teaching practice that reflects on the teacher-student-family-school relationships, investing in building a dialogue that respects the coexistence between the sides, characterized by listening the other, discovering their desires, understanding and respecting the student as a person who brings/carries their own history with their difficulties. But they should always be seen as a subject endowed with potentialities.

Extracurricular Educational Programs and School Readiness: Evidence from a Quasi-Experiment with Preschool Children

This paper adds to the literature on extracurricular early childhood education and child development by exploiting unique data on an educational project in Germany, the Junior University (JU). Utilizing a quasi-experimental study design, we estimate the causal short-term effect of JU enrollment on cognitive outcomes and show that attending extra science courses with preschool classes leads to significantly higher school readiness. Although the size of the effect is relatively small, the results are plausible and pass various robustness checks. Moreover, in comparison with other programs this intervention is cost-effective.

Management of the early childhood education development: an action research at cakranegara play groups, Lombok, Indonesia

This research focused on the improvement of Cakranegara playgroup childhood educational Management in Mataram, using an action research approach. The purpose of this research was to expand the childhood educational management especially in planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling. This qualitative research was an action research that emphasized trying out the concept of ideas into practices and was expected to enhance the quality of the Cakranegara playgroup childhood educational program. This research was started with a pre-study at the childhood education to capture the practices of planning, organizing, actuating and controlling. Data was collected by: (1) interview (2) Observation (3) Documentation. Results of this research showed that there has been significant improvement in the practices of Planning, Organizing, Actuating, Controlling on the basis of management theories.

Analyze of early childhood education in the context of inclusive education

Early childhood education means a sequence of levels of education, where the foundation is the concept of "early childhood.” Early childhood is a foundation for social skills knowledge and advances on the following level of education. The imposition of necessary support measures in the education and care of pre-school process provides successive children with special needs inclusion in next level of education. Qualitative early childhood education and care system development principle is that of making early childhood education available for appropriate needs of children and family. The article main tasks is analyze about statistic of early childhood available, analysis of the theories of early development and early child with special needs inclusion education.

The prevalence of mental disorders among upper primary school children in Kenya.

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and correlates of mental disorders among upper primary school children in grades five through seven in Kenya. The Youth Self Report (YSR) instrument was adapted for use in Kenyan schools and administered to 2267 school children in grades five through seven from 23 randomly selected schools. We estimated the prevalence of DSM-IV mental disorders, and used logistic regression analyses to examine the socio-demographic factors associated with each disorder. The prevalence of any mental disorder among Kenyan school children was 37.7 % (95 % CI = 35.7-39.7 %). Somatic complaints were the most prevalent (29.6 %, 95 % CI = 27.8-31.5 %), followed by affective disorders (14.1 %, 95 % CI = 12.7-15.6 %) and conduct disorder (12.5 %, 95 % CI = 11.2-13.9). The presence of one or more comorbid mental disorder was seen among 18.2 % (95 % CI = 16.6-19.8 %) of children. Male sex, living in a peri-urban vs. rural area, being held back in school, having divorced or separated parents, and having an employed mother were associated with an increased likelihood of having most of the mental disorders examined, whereas increasing age was associated with a reduced likelihood. We observed a high prevalence of mental disorders among school children in Kenya. If not detected early, these disorders may interfere with children's psychological, social, and educational development. Our findings highlight the importance of implementing screening measures in schools that can detect single and multiple disorders in order to improve the mental health and well-being of the next generation.

Ready for school? Impacts of delayed primary school enrollment on children's educational outcomes in rural China

This paper estimates the causal impacts of delayed primary school enrollment on children's educational outcomes in rural China. Instrumental variable estimates exploiting the discontinuity in children's enrollment age around the enrollment cut-off date indicate that a one-year delay in school enrollment increases the incidence of first-grade retention by approximately 10 percentage points for boys and reduces the probabilities of middle school enrollment by 6 percentage points for both boys and girls. These results suggest that delayed enrollment, even if it may be an optimal choice made by poor parents in response to financial constraints, is likely to be harmful to children's educational development in rural China.

The predictor role of gratitude and psychological vulnerability on forgiveness

The aim of this research was to investigate the relationships among forgiveness, gratitude, and psychological vulnerability. 416 university students completed the Trait Forgiveness Scale, Gratitude Scale and Psychological Vulnerability Scale. The Participants’ degree programs were psychological counselling and guidance, primary education, special education, early childhood education, science education, and child development. Relationships between the three constructs were analyzed through The Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to examine the extent to which forgiveness was predicted by gratitude and psychological vulnerability. Results showed that there were significant relationships between forgiveness, gratitude, and psychological vulnerability. Indices of Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) indicated that forgiveness was strongly predicted by gratitude and psychological vulnerability. The findings highlight the importance of gratitude and psychological vulnerability in the level of forgiveness.

For the sake of peace: maintaining the resonance of peace and education

This article is an attempt to develop the idea of peace education for adults through the assumption that, compared to peace education for children, educational approaches for adults are as yet undeveloped. This article also assumes that the progress of educational approaches for adults is necessary to the further development of peace education for children, as well as to the expansion of the theory. In navigating the argument around issues of peace education for adults, the article uses the example of educational issues faced by Amerasians in Okinawa. The article argues that language education is a fundamental aspect of peace education for adults. It also demonstrates that the content of language education for adults is different from the content of language education for children. Furthermore, the article defends peace education for adults, through language education, as the very first step towards creating peaceful conditions for the education of Amerasians in Okinawa.

Assessing Parental Role as Resource Persons in Achieving Goals of Early Detection and Intervention for Children with Hearing Impairment

Early detection and intervention for any degree of hearing loss is critical to the linguistic, social and educational development of children with auditory deficit. Since parents and family members are in a position to identify hearing loss at an early stage, they can play a vital role in achieving the goals of early identification and intervention for their children. Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the age at which parents and significant others begin to suspect hearing impairmentin their children, and to advocate for using them as resource persons in the early detection of hearing loss. Method: Parents of children with hearing impairment were retrospectively surveyed and interviewed to determine the age at which suspicion, diagnosis, fitting of amplification and initiation of interventions occurred. Results: Interviews revealed the average age to be 16.5, 24.3, 31.7 and 33.4 months, for suspicion, diagnosis, fitting of amplification and initiation of early intervention for hearing loss respectively. The obtained age of suspicion is lower than the age of identification of hearing loss reported in Indian literature. The current study found delays in diagnosis and fitting of amplification, both of which are essential to initiate early remedial programmes which facilitate development of speech and language skills in children with hearing impairment. Surprisingly, it was found that these delays were caused by professional failures. Conclusion: It is emphasised that parents are in the best position to detect hearing problems in their children, and can be effectively utilised as manpower/equal partners in achieving the goal of early identification of hearing loss. The study outlines appropriate ways and means to facilitate early identification and provide effective intervention for children with hearing impairment. Implications: In the absence of a universal hearing screening programme for newborn infants, parents can be used as manpower/resource persons to identify children with hearing impairment.

Biography, policy and language teaching practices in a multilingual context: Early childhood classrooms in Mauritius

Language policies in education in multilingual postcolonial contexts are often driven by ideological considerations more veered towards socio-economic and political viability for the country than towards the practicality at implementation level. Centuries after the advent of colonisation, when culturally and linguistically homogenous countries helped to maintain the dominion of colonisers, the English language still has a stronghold in numerous countries due to the material rewards it offers. How then are the diversity of languages – often with different statuses and functions in society – reconciled in the teaching and learning process? How do teachers deal with the intricacies that are generated within a situation where children are taught in a language that is foreign to them? This paper is based on a study involving pre-primary teachers in Mauritius, a developing multilingual African country. The aim was to understand how their approach to the teaching of English was shaped by their biographical experiences of learning the language. The narrative inquiry methodology offered rich possibilities to foray into these experiences, including the manifestations of negotiating their classroom pedagogy in relation to their own personal historical biographies of language teaching and learning, the policy environment, and the pragmatic classroom specificities of diverse, multilingual learners. These insights become resources for early childhood education and teacher development in multilingual contexts caught within the tensions between language policy and pedagogy.

Bibliotecas públicas e escolares nos discursos de Cecília Meireles e Armanda Álvaro Alberto: acervos e práticas de leituras

Apresenta um panorama dos discursos educacionais de Cecília Meireles e Armanda Álvaro Alberto que, nas décadas de 1930 e 1940, lutaram por uma educação pública, leiga e de qualidade. O artigo relata o engajamento de ambas com questões ligadas às Bibliotecas Públicas e Escolares e recupera as ideias de Cecília Meireles e Armanda Álvaro Alberto sobre temas como: a escolha de livros para crianças; a construção de uma literatura infantil com características e peculiaridades próprias; projetos educativos; formação do acervo e os estudos sobre as leituras de crianças e jovens. Além disso, são descritas algumas experiências daquela que é considerada a primeira biblioteca pública infantil no Brasil, o "Pavilhão Mourisco", iniciativa de Cecília Meireles, assim como os projetos de leitura voltados para crianças, adolescentes e adultos de Armanda Álvaro Alberto. Ademais, discute-se a importância das bibliotecas para o desenvolvimento sócio-educativo de crianças, jovens e adultos e a presença decisiva do bibliotecário como mediador da tríade livro-leitura-biblioteca.

PENGEMBANGAN PROGRAM HOLISTIK INTEGRATIF DI SEKOLAH INTEGRAL HIDAYATULLAH YAA BUNAYYA BATANG

Study of early childhood development policy and holistic terintegratif conducted by Bappenas (2009) states that early childhood development as a whole (holistic) covers basic health, nutrition, and emotional and intellectual development of children needs to be done properly because it determines the course of his life in later days. For that, children need stimulation holistic (whole) which includes stimulation of education, health and nutrition, and psychosocial. Indonesian Government to developearly childhood development services (early childhood education) through integrative holistic umbrella stipulated in Presidential Decree (Decree) No. 60of 2013. With Integrative Holisticearly childhood education regulation, the government targets to increasethe quality ofhuman resourcesin achieving optimal growth and developmentina child's developmentduring theearlyperiod, namelyfromthe fetal stageuntil thechildwas six years old. This study used a qualitative descriptive method that aims to understand the phenomenon of what is experienced by the study subjects eg behavior, perception, motivation, action, and other holistically and by means of a description in the form of words and language, in a specific context naturally and by utilizing a variety of natural methods (Moleong, 2011). The subjects in this study were principals, teachers and chairman of the foundation. Methods of data collection by using observation, interviews, and documentation. Analysis of the data with data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The results of the data analysis and discussion concluded that the preparation of development programs in the School of Integral Holistic Integrative Hidayatullah Yaa Bunayya rod to provide essential services to the child so that the child can be met, in the provision of services to children of its implementation have been able to organize the development of integrative holistic early childhood education programs well or succeed in provide services to children with a holistic and integrative. School of Integral Hidayatullah Yaa Bunayya Rod trying to prepare what is needed to provide a holistic and intregrative services to children, both of the facilities and infrastructure to prepare teachers who understand the needs of all children, holistic services for children. The school seeks to provide educational children in accordance with the principles of early childhood learning and in the process integrate with the values of divinity and equip the daily habit of planting Islamic character. Habituation Islamic way of life taught by role models whereas qur’an and hadist al is a source of inspiration in any learning process. Through the planning, implementation and evaluation of integrative holistic early childhood education good, so that it can be said the school integral hidayatullah is ready in developing or organizing service early childhood programs integrative holistic one-stop service.

Cognitive benefits of last night's sleep: daily variations in children's sleep behavior are related to working memory fluctuations.

Recent studies have suggested substantial fluctuations of cognitive performance in adults both across and within days, but very little is known about such fluctuations in children. Children's sleep behavior might have an important influence on their daily cognitive resources, but so far this has not been investigated in terms of naturally occurring within-person variations in children's everyday lives. In an ambulatory assessment study, 110 elementary school children (8-11years old) completed sleep items and working memory tasks on smartphones several times per day in school and at home for 4weeks. Parents provided general information about the children and their sleep habits. We identified substantial fluctuations in the children's daily cognitive performance, self-reported nightly sleep quality, time in bed, and daytime tiredness. All three facets were predictive of performance fluctuations in children's school and daily life. Sleep quality and time in bed were predictive of performance in the morning, and afternoon performance was related to current tiredness. The children with a lower average performance level showed a higher within-person coupling between morning performance and sleep quality. Our findings contribute important insights regarding a potential source of performance fluctuations in children. The effect of varying cognitive resources should be investigated further because it might impact children's daily social, emotional, and learning-related functioning. Theories about children's cognitive and educational development should consider fluctuations on micro-longitudinal scales (e.g., day-to-day) to identify possible mechanisms behind long-term changes.

Early Childhood and Education Development Center in Kathmandu Valley

Objectives: the ethnography study was undertaken to assess the situation early childhood education development centre (ECED) based on community and school as per ECED minimum standard and also to explore teaching pedagogy, infrastructure and environment of teaching at ECEDs. Similarly this study also tries to identify the challenges and issues to implement the ECED minimum standards.Method: a qualitative research design was applied for this evaluation research. The primary data were gathered through interview and observation. Conclusion: from the effectiveness perspective learning environment of early childhood development centre for children is satisfactory at home as well early childhood development (ECD) centre due to parental care. From the sustainability, ECD management committee are starting to collect fund for ECD centre (Admission and monthly fee), ECD management committee has clarity of organizational vision. ECD centers have been found to have trained and experienced ECD facilitator and are able to get Government quota for sustainability of center running cost and similarly from the equity, most of ECD parents are belong to marginal families whose children benefit from ECD center and since they cannot afford costly Montessori, children of marginal family can also afford quality education in ECD centers.
