This article reports on the results of a pilot program, developed and conducted by geriatric medicine fellows, that incorporated learner-centered learning skills in a retreat model to foster academic fellowship program development. A six-month preparatory period involved completion of a fellowship mission statement and definition of individual goals. During a three-day retreat, seven topic areas and four training areas were addressed. Sessions on clinical training and teaching geriatrics were rated most useful. Following the retreat, teams met to develop specific proposals regarding clinical training, research training and career development goals that were later presented to the Division leadership. At one year follow-up, 60% of the proposed goals were implemented in the geriatrics fellowship training program, two proposed goals were made available as electives, and the others were under consideration.
