Transforming Roles of Nursing Professional Development Practitioners.

This research was undertaken to delineate the future role of nursing professional development (NPD) specialists. Using a modified e-Delphi technique, seven key roles for NPD (partner for practice transitions, learning facilitator, change agent, mentor, leader, champion of scientific inquiry, and advocate for NPD specialty) and their concomitant competencies evolved. Results of this study informed the update of the NPD Scope and Standards of Practice and may be used to identify competencies for the specialty.

Career Mapping for Professional Development and Succession Planning.

Career mapping facilitates professional development of nurses by education specialists and nurse managers. On the basis of national Nursing Professional Development Scope and Standards, our education and professional development framework supports the organization's professional practice model and provides a foundation for the professional career map. This article describes development, implementation, and evaluation of the professional career map for nurses at a large children's hospital to support achievement of the nursing strategic goals for succession planning and professional development.

Recognition and management of sepsis in early infancy.

Serious bacterial and viral infections occurring in early infancy are important factors affecting morbidity and mortality. Recognition of sepsis by healthcare professionals is vital and allows initiation of appropriate early treatment which can be life-saving and improve outcomes for these infants greatly. This article outlines the leading causes of sepsis, for example, group B Streptococcus (GBS), Escherichia coli and herpes simplex virus. We discuss the non-specific ways in which an infant with a serious infection may present to health professionals and highlight crucial features to look for in the history and during examination of an unwell infant, and these include 'red-flag' signs and symptoms that should be carefully elicited. A systematic approach for the management of an infant with suspected sepsis based on up-to-date evidence and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence ( NICE 2012 ) recommendations are discussed. Implications for nursing practice are also included, with a summary of sepsis in early infancy to aid the continued professional development of nurses working with young children in clinical settings.

Nurses’ generalized self-efficacy in relation to their workplace

Introduction: Self-efficacy in nurses appears to be of great importance, and is one of the indicators of behaviour Purpose: Nurses’ self-assessment of their generalized self-efficacy in relation to their workplace. Material and methods: The study involved random sample of 570 nurses. A diagnostic survey was carried out using the standardized Generalized SelfEfficacy Scale (GSES). Results: The average value of self-efficacy amounted to 29.3±30. Among the respondents, 56.8% represented category of “high efficacy”, whereas others were of “average efficacy” (32.3%) and “low efficacy” (10.9%). The overall assessment of the nursing profession was higher in participants who presented higher values on GSES scale (R=0.12). The average general level of satisfaction in terms of 20 aspects of professional work was connected with self-efficacy which proved statistically significant. Analysis of self-efficacy score did not indicate statistically significant differences among workplaces. Conclusion: Over half of the participants represented the category of “high efficacy”. The group of nurses employed in district hospitals presented the least instances of low self-efficacy assessment. Individuals who were satisfied with their nursing professional development opportunities had a higher self-efficacy. The higher the perception of self-efficacy, the higher the workplace satisfaction. The average level of satisfaction resulting from various aspects of nursing profession depended on the perception of selfefficacy in the following areas of assessment: professional development opportunity, decisionmaking autonomy, sense of purpose at work, and, to a lesser extent, occupational safety, maintaining work-life balance, and the possibility of communicating with people.

Evaluation of the student learning experience.

This article, the final in a series of 11, discusses the importance of evaluating the students' learning experience. Mentoring is integral to effective nursing care and professional development. It is important that mentors are able to establish whether they are effective in their role, including identifying their strengths and areas for improvement, and whether they are making a difference to the students' learning and contributing to the learning experience and assessment process. The article relates to the fourth domain and outcomes of the Nursing and Midwifery Council's Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice on evaluation of learning and presents several ways in which mentors and practice teachers can evaluate their role and the students' learning experience.

Nursing Professional Development Organizational Value Demonstration Project

A common question nursing professional development (NPD) practitioners ask is, "How many NPD practitioners should my organization have?" This study examined correlations among facility size and structure, NPD practitioner characteristics and time in service, and organizational outcomes. Organizations with a higher rate of NPD full-time equivalents per bed had higher patient satisfaction with nurses' communication and provision of discharge instruction on their HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Provider and Systems) scores.

Nurse Executive Mentorship Supporting Professional Development Through Publication Success

Nursing is a unique profession in its universal support and recognition of the value of professional development. Offering diverse opportunities for professional development has been cited as important in sustaining nurse engagement and retention.1,2 Professional development is actualized in multiple pathways, varying by the individual interest of the nurse, the value of specific accomplishments by employers, and the benefits to patient care. Establishing mentoring relationships with nurses at all levels with a primary goal of developing a peer-reviewed publication is one way a nurse executive can support professional development for nurses within their organization. This article presents an overview of a framework for nurse executives with the primary goal of supporting publication success in national and international peer-reviewed journals through mentorship.

This latest version is intended to guide current and future nursing professional development practice. This article describes the major revisions to the scope and standards, along with their driving forces.

Beyond Baby Steps: Today's Use of Social Networking Sites and the Nursing Profession.

Nurses' use of online social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, are increasing and with it the controversy surrounding the compatibility of social networking sites within a profession that values privacy and confidentiality. This article draws on case studies, experiments, surveys, and policies from professional organizations, academic research, and nursing education programs spanning the last 5 years to highlight best practices that address 2 critical areas where the values of the nursing profession and those of social media most directly collide: regulatory issues and the blurring of professional and personal online identities. It also suggests ways of using social media to complement patient outcomes and the professional development of nurses while remaining consistent with professional ethics and values.

The Level of Professionalism of Nurses Working in a Hospital in Turkey.

Introduction: Professionalism is characterized by the degree of dedication displayed by individuals regarding the values and behavioral attributes of a specific career identity. Professionalism indicates attitudes that represent high levels of identification with and commitment to a specific profession. In the process of the professional development of nursing, various factors affect these obstacles which may impede the professional development of nurses and their professional behaviors. This study was carried out with the aim of determining the professional behavior of nurses in a hospital in Turkey. Methods: In this descriptive exploratory study a total of 89 nurses working in a public hospital in northwestern of Turkey were participated. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and Behavioral Inventory Form for Professionalism in Nursing (BIPN). Results: The result showed that mean scores on the BIPN were 5.07 (3.47). The areas with the highest levels of professional behavior were competence and continuing education 1.88 (0.34). The professionalism levels for nurses were the lowest in the areas of autonomy 0.06 (0.34), publication 0.10 (0.25), and research 0.25 (0.60). There was a statistically significant difference between the total BIPN scores and the education levels of the nurses and the working of nurses. Conclusion: The professional behavior of nurses is at a low level. Since the arrangement of the nurses’ working conditions affects their professional behaviors; therefore, development in the field of professional behaviors in nursing must be assessed and supported to increase the quality of patient care.

Partnering to Promote Evidence-Based Practice in a Community Hospital: Implications for Nursing Professional Development Specialists.

Nursing professional development specialists working in community hospitals face significant barriers to evidence-based practice that academic medical centers do not. This article describes 7 years of a multifaceted, service academic partnership in a large, urban, community hospital. The partnership has strengthened the nursing professional development role in promoting evidence-based practice across the scope of practice and serves as a model for others.

Вказано на гостру необхідність удосконалення професійної підготовки українських медсестер зі спеціальності «Анестезіологія і реаніматологія» і запропоновано кроки для досягнення цієї мети. </p>

Challenges and countermeasures of advanced nursing education under the perspective based on health needs in China

The purpose of this paper is to explore the ageing of population, changes in disease spectrum, the need for development of nursing profession, the reforms of medical and health system, especially the challenges of increasingly diverse health needs on professional competence in nurses. And then, we will analyze the existent problems of nursing education in China from different proportions of nursing personnel training, education concept and model, course offered, clinical practice teaching and teaching staff, so as to put forward the targeted measures. A new model in teaching undergraduate research: A collaborative approach and learning cooperatives

Forming new, innovative collaborative approaches and cooperative learning methods between universities and hospitals maximize learning for undergraduate nursing students in a research course and provide professional development for nurses on the unit. The purpose of this Collaborative Approach and Learning Cooperatives (CALC) Model is to foster working relations between faculty and hospital administrators, maximize small group learning of undergraduate nursing students, and promote onsite knowledge of evidence based care for unit nurses. A quality improvement study using the CALC Model was implemented in an undergraduate nursing research course at a southern university. Hospital administrators provided a list of clinical concerns based on national performance outcome measures. Undergraduate junior nursing student teams chose a clinical question, gathered evidence from the literature, synthesized results, demonstrated practice application, and developed practice recommendations. The student teams developed posters, which were evaluated by hospital administrators. The administrators selected several posters to display on hospital units for continuing education opportunity.This CALC Model is a systematic, calculated approach and an economically feasible plan to maximize personnel and financial resources to optimize collaboration and cooperative learning. Universities and hospital administrators, nurses, and students benefit from working together and learning from each other.

Cuidados de enfermagem em saúde mental e psiquiatria no início do século XX

INTRODUCTION Throughout the history of Nursing we also witnessed to the development of the Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, that, in Portugal, was initiated in asylums, nursing homes and psychiatric hospitals that emerged in the mid-nineteenth century. OBJECTIVES Describe the Nursing interventions exposed in the book Manual del Enfermero para Pacientes Nerviosos y Mentales. METHODS It is an work that results from an historical research, based on the assumptions that result from documental analysis that is focused on the Manual del Enfermero para Pacientes Nerviosos y Mentales, edited in 1936, which is a Spanish translation of a primary version of german language, published in 1935. RESULTS The manual presents three main objectives, that are: bring together indispensable professional notions, draw attention to the difficulties of the profession and to the limits of knowledge, and promote the qualities of character that are necessary to the exercise of Nursing. It is structured into five parts: the first one is directed to the healthy man, the second to the unhealthy, the third to the care of patients, the fourth to mental hygiene and assistance and the last part to the history of mental medicine. The Nursing interventions, such as hydrotherapy, ergotherapy and administration of medication, are based on the evaluation of the person and the surveillance of his behavior, taking into account the respect of the nurse for the sick people, their families and friends, the institution and the remaining nurses. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that the manual, taking into acount its presentation and the analysis of its content, it was important in the training and in the professional development of nurses that, at the time, worked at Centro Hospitalar Conde Ferreira. Nursing interventions are addressed either to the care of the body and of the mind, and the family was also subject of attention of the nurses.

Nurse education specialist utilizing career coaching to encourage lifelong learning

Nursing as a profession in the current healthcare climate requires the professional development of nurses from the bedside to the boardroom. Career coaches emphasize the importance of continued professional development in a way that will motivate and employ nurses to seek to move their careers to the next level. The program was established to assist nurses in the pursuit of advanced education and prepare them for leading the future in nursing. With guidance from the program, registered nurses are encouraged to pursue promotion, certification, the transition to various practice areas of greater interest, and leadership roles. Ultimately, the career counselors aid the nurses in encouraging lifelong learning and the pursuit of personal as well as professional goals. The career coaching program can assist with job satisfaction and organization succession planning. This article describes an excellent solution for succession planning within an organization looking to develop nurse talent for growth and retention.

Status and influencing factors analysis of competence among undergraduate nursing interns

Objective To explore the status and influencing factors of competency among undergraduate nursing interns. Methods A total of 285 undergraduate nursing students from Huzhou University were investigated with competency by a self-designed questionnaire. Results The total score of competency was (157.61±16.73) among the involved students. Scores of professional quality, personal effectiveness, clinical nursing ability and professional development ability were (3.97±0.47), (3.76±0.49), (3.67±0.47) and (3.53±0.51). Major influencing factors of professional development included the hospital level and practical experience before practice. Major influencing factors of clinical nursing ability, professional quality and personal effectiveness was practical experience. Conclusions Nursing students should try to choose a high-level hospital during the internship. Clinical teachers should carry on individual multi-leveled training according to the characteristics of nursing students, especially focus on the ability of professional learning, plan execution, coordinated strain and so on. They should also establish the index system of competence among undergraduate nursing students to promote the professional development of them. Factors influencing nurse participation in continuing professional development activities: Survey results from the Netherlands

Professionals are individually responsible for planning and carrying out continuing professional development (CPD) activities, ensuring their relevance to current practice and career development. The key factors that encourage nurses to undertake CPD activities are not yet clear. Several studies have investigated motives of nurses to participate in CPD programmes ("Motives"), the importance they attach to CPD ("Importance"), the conditions they consider necessary for participation ("Conditions"), and their actual participation in CPD activities ("Pursued"). The relationships among these variables, however, have neither been investigated nor reported to date. The aim of this study is to investigate the nature of the relationships among those factors that influence nurse participation in CPD in the Netherlands. An exploratory cross-sectional study was carried out using quantitative data collected with the previously validated Questionnaire Professional Development of Nurses (Q-PDN). A convenience sample of 5500 registered nurses working at one Dutch university hospital and several general hospitals was addressed. A descriptive study using a survey was undertaken. The questionnaire was completed and returned by 1226 nurses. Correlation analyses were conducted to determine which factors were related to nurses undertaking CPD activities. Structural equation modelling was deployed to determine the relationships among the variables. "Conditions" was found to be moderately related to "Motives", which itself was strongly related to "Importance", which itself was very strongly related to "CPD activities pursued". If nurses considered a CPD activity important they were highly likely to pursue it; however, the importance attached to specific CPD activities was influenced by the presence of particular motives, which depended in part on the way CPD conditions were perceived. The key factor influencing CPD participation of nurses is how important they deem particular CPD activities; the latter is a function of their CPD motives and of their perceptions that the right conditions for participation are in place. Implications are discussed.

Registered Nurses' Experiences With Individuals With Low Health Literacy: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

The nursing profession is charged to provide effective communication and education to patients. A qualitative descriptive study that explored what nurses experience when interacting with patients thought to possess low health literacy was performed. Findings suggest that nurses are promoting health literacy using several evidence-based strategies. Major barriers encountered by nurses were limited cultural and linguistic resources within their healthcare organizations. This study provides nursing professional development specialists information about the educational gaps of nurses in practice related to health literacy and the identification of systems barriers.
