On the occasion of the publication of the encyclical Deus caritas est, the article discusses the Christian service of charity in the context of social action. After reference to the main challenges that charity has faced since the 19th century, charity is placed in the context of the Christian message, so that some essential traits of Christian love of one’s neighbour are highlighted.
