Ren� Daumal and the pataphysics of liberation

Daumal's use of pataphysics is not, I would contend, quite as cosmetic as Torma suggests. Certainly it fulfils the same function as negation, and therefore might appear to be redundant. But the following passage stresses just how important the concept of humour is in Daumal's soteriology: En usant toujours de tels mots que negation, plus exacts peut-etre en leurs sens originels, je craindrais de laisser entendre cette operation comme un vain simulacre abstrait du discours, un vain scheme vocal. Et, pour tâcher que tu ne retombes dans le sommeil de ton ‘savoir’ philosophique, je dirai donc plutot, quand je parle bien du doute methodique, sarcasme ou derision methodique (T 41; Daumal's emphasis). Despite its heavily idealist overtones, therefore, Daumal's method relies far more on the provocation of the rational mind, than it does on the Hegelian Geist, the hypothesis of absolute consciousness. Humour is not just a Bergsonian social corrective for Daumal, a convenient critical tool with which to excoriate the absurdities of science, as it had been for Jarry in Gestes et opinions du docteur Faustroll, pataphysicien.27 Nor is it just a protection against a hostile world, as Breton claims, following Freud.28 For Daumal, it is certainly the former, and could well be the latter; but it is more. It is a soteriological tool of self-criticism and humility, which, like acid, gnaws away at self-importance and self-satisfaction in the search for an authentic self untrammelled by the absurdity of bourgeois individualism. I shall leave the final word to Daumal, whose apparently gnomic Clavicule 3 from Le Contre-Ciel aptly summarizes in its playfulness the joyous rejection of the absurdity of the individual self: Recule encore derriere toi-meme ris: Le Non est prononce sur ton rire. Le Rire est prononce sur ton NON. Renie ton Nom, ris de ton NON (CC 26).

Effects of relative humidity and yield on self-induced rainout from tactical nuclear explosions

We have studied the process of wet fallout from a tactical nuclear explosion due to scavenging of radioactivity by self-induced rain (rain produced by the explosion itself) using a numerical two- dimensional model of an axisymmetric cloud. Under mid-latitude summertime conditions and for yields of 20 to 100 kilotons, the model shows that self-induced rainout is not significant for low relative humidities, is very important for high relative humidities (> 80%), and is moderately important for relative humidities down to about 50%. When self-induced rainout occurs, it is heavy within a couple of kilometers of ground zero and peaks early in the episode. The model has successfully predicted observed radioac tive self-induced rainout for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki detona tions (both in the 20 kiloton range), and does not predict rain under conditions typical of U.S. tests in Nevada, where self-induced rainout has not been observed. The model is interesting as a hybrid of Eulerian and Lagrangian methods.

A Survey on the Cyclotetramethylene Tetranitramine (HMX)

Cyclotetramethylene tetranitramine (1,3,5,7,-tetranitro-1,3,5,7,-tetrazacyclo-octane) which has been classified as high explosive, a source of high chemical energy, falls into polynitramine group of the nitramines. Its is also known as octogen and HMX. Its is one of the most powerful explosives having high density(1.9g/cc), high melting point (281 Degree calcius) and high velocity of detonation(9100m/sec). It has slightly higher energy than RDX and therefore, used where a maximum energy is required by limited dimensions of charge. Because of its resistance towards heat, it has become the nucleus of research for thermally for thermally stable compositions. It has been used in number of binary mixtures in conjunction with TNT, RDX,TNB etc. It forms the main constituent in certain plastic bonded explosives(PBX). In the present review attempt has been made to cover the available literature on HMX.
