Lab-on-paper optical sensor for smartphone-based quantitative estimation of uranyl ions

We report here, for the first time, a smartphone-based lab-on-paper method for determination of uranium in ores. The method is based on the reaction with arsenazo-III on a filter-paper strip. The intensity of the green color was determined by a smartphone. The calibration curve is linear up to at least 60 μg mL−1 of uranium with LOD and LOQ values of 0.66 and 2.21 μg mL−1, respectively. The proposed method was applied for the analysis of spiked water samples and real Egyptian ore samples with recoveries ranging from 97.3 to 104.7%. The results are in agreement with the reported reference titrimetric method.

Ion selective electrode for uranium based on composite multiwalled carbon nanotube-benzo-15-crown-5 in PVC matrix coated on graphite rod

Development of a composite multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with benzo-15-crown-5 (B15C5) as ionophore sensor responsive to uranyl ion is described. The composite MWNT-PVC membrane containing the active ingredients was casted on the surface of a graphite rod. The sensor incorporates B15C5 as electroactive material, ortho-nitrophenyl octyl ether (o-NPOE) as a plasticizer and sodium tetraphenyl borate (NaTPB) as an ion discriminator. The sensor displays a rapid and linear response over the concentration range of 1 × 10−1 to 1 × 10−7 M with a slope of 29.9 ± 0.4 mV per decade. The detection limit of this electrode was found to be 5.4 × 10−8 M and the working pH range is from 2.5 to 4.5. Interference from many inorganic cations viz. Na+, K+, Sr2+, Zn2+ and Fe3+ is negligible for the sensor. Application to the determination of uranium in ores and effluent samples gives results with good correlation which are comparable with data obtained by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. The electrode has been characterized using surface techniques.

Extraction and spectrophotometric determination of uranium in ores

An extraction - spectrophotometric method is proposed for the determination of trace amounts of uranium in ores, based on its extraction with trioctylphosphine oxide in toluene and development of colour with glyoxal bis(2-hydroxyanil)(GBH) or 1-(2-pyridylazo)naphth-2-ol (PAN) in NN-dimethylformamide in the organic extraction phase without back-extraction. The maximum absorbance with GBH as reagent occurs at 600 nm with a molar absorptivity of 1.48 (± 0.01)× 104 1 mol–1 cm–1 and with PAN as reagent at 555 nm with a molar absorptivity of 2.61 (± 0.02)× 104 1 mol–1 cm–1. Beer's law is obeyed over the ranges 0.6–10.5 and 0.3–6.0 µg ml–1 of uranium(VI)(corresponding to 20–350 and 10–200 µg of uranium in the sample) at 600 and 555 nm, with GBH and PAN, respectively.The proposed method has been applied successfully to the analysis of standard and synthetic uranium ores with uranium contents of up to 0.15%.

Determination of uranium in ores using instrumental neutron activation analysis

An instrumental neutron activation analysis method based on the measurement of239Np has been developed for the determination of uranium in ores. The samples after 5 sec irradiation were cooled for 3 days and the gamma-ray spectra were measured with a 30 cm3 Ge(Li) detector. The precision and accuracy of the proposed method were determined by analysing IAEA Standard Uranium Ore samples.

Analysis of uranium ores by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence

The determination of uranium in ores by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XFA) is demonstrated for uranium ore samples of known content. For calibration silica gel standards are used. Matrix effects are corrected by measuring the Compton scattering peaks. The radionuclide 109Cd as well as a X-ray tube in combination with Mo or Sn as secondary targets are suited as X-ray sources. Determination of uranium in ores by an x-ray excited optical luminescence technique

An x-ray excited optical luminescence method for U determination in ores is described in which the ore is blended with a phosphor-base mixture and heated for 30 min at 1200$sup 0$C. In contrast to the usual luminescence emission under ultraviolet, the heated samples exhibit no luminescence under ultraviolet, but three broad bands in the 260 to 330 nm region are excited. The method can detect 5 ppM of U$sub 3$O$sub 8$ in a 25 mg ore sample. (JSR)

Determination of uranium in ores and in solution using a portable non-dispersive X-ray spectrograph

The portable non-dispersive X-ray fluorescence instrument developed was tested for its application to the determination of uranium in solution, in simulated ores, and in naturally occurring ores. This portable X-ray fluorescence instrument is composed of a small radioisotope source for excitation (cobalt-57), a compact proportional counter for detection, a miniaturized electronic package, a recorder for data presentation, and is easily contained in a one-cubic-foot volume. Using this portable instrument, uranium in solution was determined with a relative error of ±2.4%, and in simulated ores with a relative error of ±4.0%. The natural gamma radiation of uranium provides another analytical technique whereby with this instrument uranium in ores was determined with a relative error of ±2.0%.

The success of nuclear power is due to a large extent to the achievements in the analysis of nuclear fuel and construction materials. This article gives the main results obtained at the Department of Analytical Chemistry in the Institute of Nuclear Studies (INS) of the Polish Academy of Sciences on the determination of uranium in ores and concentrates, and also on the determination of various impurities (boron, rare earth, etc.) in pure preparations of uranium. The experimental results are given for the comparative determination of small amounts of uranium and rare earth by various methods.

Spectrophotometric determination of uranium in ores with 8-quinolinol

A method for the sensitive and rapid spectrophotometric determination of uranium in ores using 8-quinolinol was developed. Uranium is separated by extraction with tributylphosphate-kerosene from nitric acid solution. After the back-extraction of uranium with ammonium carbonate solution, uranium is determined spectrophotometrically with 8-quinolinol. When 1 gram of sample is taken, as little as 0.005% of uranium can be determined precisely. Uranium in monazite is also determined by this method. (auth)

A specific method for the determination of uranium in ores by cathode ray polarography

A method is presented for the specific determination of uranium in ores by cathode my polarography. The uranium is separated by a simple and rapid mercury-cathode electrolysis, then determined polarographically in a base electrolyte in which vanadium, titanium and tungsten do not interfere. Application of the method to the analysis of ten standard uranium ores is shown.

Determination of Uranium in Ores

Determination of small amounts of uranium in uranium are and phosphate rock was attempted by a colorimetric methcd using hydrogen peroxide after the separation of the uranium with a cellulose column. Conditions of color development and separation were investigated, and a suitable procedure was established. Uranium is separated chromatographically from the large quantities of other elements by eluting ether solvent through a cellulose column. The eluent containing uranium is almost free of interfering elements for the colorimetric determination by means of peroxide. Interference of large amounts of phosphate in the elution of uranium can be avoided by adding ferric salts to mask the phosphate. in general, ores containing more than 0.01% U3O8 can be analyzed by this method with good results. The time required for analysis is about 45 hours.

Polarographic determination of uranium in ores in ascorbic acid supporting electrolyte

A polarographic determination of uranium in ores using 0.5 M l-ascorbic acid as supporting electrolyte is described. Four different ores were analysed and the results compared with those obtained by other analytical methods. No previous chemical separations were necessary. The method is simple, rapid and seems to be suitable for routine analyses of samples with a uranium content above 0.01%. In the concentration range 0.01—0.05%, the relative error of determination is 9—5% ; above 0.05% U the precision is much greater. Te, Tl and Pb interfere in this method under the conditions described (pH 3.5—4.0), but the interference due to lead is eliminated in many cases by lowering the pH of the solution.

Determination of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Elements

Numerous chemical and radiochemical methods for the determination of uranium and thorium are reviewed. These include both direct and indirect methods utilizing the radiations (..cap alpha.., ..beta.., and ..gamma..) and gravimetric, spectrophotometric and fluorometric methods. It is noted that the chemical determination of uranium in ores is the more accurate method. Thorium in minerals is most accurately determined by chemical means but may be estimated radiochemically. 82 references.
