Baseline study for the total mercury determination in Yemeni fish

The high levels of mercury toxicity in humans make it necessary to monitor mercury levels in food, pharmaceuticals, and the environment to minimize human exposure. Between June 2020 and October 2021, researchers collected 240 fish samples from different locations along the Yemeni coast to evaluate mercury contamination. The Direct Mercury Analyzer was used to determine the concentration of mercury in each sample. To ensure method accuracy, a series of triplicate mercury concentration analyses were conducted. The samples ranged from 2 to 100 ng to determine linearity and repeatability i.e., within-day variation. The results showed a high level of precision, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9990 and a repeatability of 1.34 %–5.62 % RSD range. The method was also highly accurate, as the mercury recovery results from the contaminated fish samples ranged from 96.77 % to 105.14 %. The limits of detection and quantitation of mercury were 0.0015 ppm and 0.0049 ppm, respectively. This allowed the method to detect trace amounts of mercury in fish meat. Mercury concentration in the 240 fish samples did not exceed the FDA, but below the 0.5 ppm specified limit of YSMO.

Total Mercury Content in the Tissues of Freshwater Chelonium (Podocnemis expansa) and a Human Health Risk Assessment for the Amazon Population in Brazil.

Researchers recognize the silent, negative and deleterious effects caused by mercury pollution in gold mining areas. Freshwater turtles are culturally part of the diet of riverside populations in the Amazon region and this area presents mercury (Hg) pollution issues mainly due to gold mining activities. Thus, this research aimed to evaluate the total mercury (THg) content in the different organs of Amazonian giant river turtle (Podocnemis expansa) and carry out a human health risk assessment associated with the consumption of these animals. This study was conducted in the Vila Balbina, municipality of Presidente Figueiredo, state of Amazonas, Brazil. Skin (n = 28), muscle (n = 19) and brain (n = 2) samples were analyzed by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (TDA-AAS) and a DMA-80™ mercury analyzer was used for the total mercury determinations. The average values found for THg in the skin, muscle and brain samples were, respectively, 0.1045 mg·kg-1, 0.1092 mg·kg-1 and 0.0601 mg·kg-1. Thus, THg was observed even though the P. expansa were kept in captivity, possibly due to previous contamination by air, water and food. The Hazard Quotient (HQ) was calculated considering a 9.07 g·day-1 intake dose of P. expansa and the consumption of turtles once a week showed an HQ = 2.45, which may cause long-term injuries to human health. Although the muscle concentrations were below the maximum limit established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Brazilian regulatory agencies, it is important to evaluate consumption factors such as amount ingested, frequency and animal gender, which may cause a potential risk to regular consumers due to mercury bioaccumulation. The WHO may consider various aspects in order to warn the Amazon population about the severity and silent hazard of this metal, especially due to the importance of this matrix in the region. This region urgently needs government actions to inhibit clandestine mining and to prevent future serious, chronic health problems of the entire population.

Aalnysis of Influencing Factors for the Detection of Total Mercury in Food by Atomic Fluorescence

With the increase of people's attention to nutrition and health, food quality and safety have also become the focus of people's daily attention, among which mercury and its compounds are widely distributed in nature, with high volatility, high toxicity and harmful accumulation. In this paper, the first method of atomic fluorescence spectroscopy in GB5009.17-2021 "National Food Safety Standard - Determination of Total Mercury and Organic Mercury in Food" was comprehensively analyzed in the detection of total mercury in food, and the key points of sample pretreatment, the on-machine detection process and the detection experiment were comprehensively analyzed. The analysis of key points of pretreatment mainly includes: sample weighing, cleaning and use of detection instruments, amount of acid in microwave digestion process, optimization and setting of microwave digestion program, and analysis and research on the elimination method of excess nitric acid after microwave digestion is completed. The analysis of the key parameters of the atomic fluorescence photometer of the detection equipment during the sample testing on the machine includes: the setting and optimization of the instrument parameters, the daily maintenance method of the key components of the instrument, etc.; Through the analysis and study of all aspects of the entire detection process, the main factors affecting the accuracy of the detection results are identified for improvement and solidification implementation, so as to more effectively improve the accuracy of the measurement results.

Determination of Total Mercury in Spanish Samples of Baby Food, Fast Food, and Daily Meal

This study determined the levels of total mercury in Spanish samples of baby food, fast food, and daily meal, which people of different ages consume, to evaluate potential toxicological risks through the contribution to the tolerable daily intake (TDI). The total mercury concentrations were determined in thirteen commercial baby foods for infants 6 to 12 months old, six types of fast foods prepared for children, and nine canteen menus prepared for adults. Samples were analyzed using a direct mercury analyzer, and the following concentration ranges were found: baby food (0.57-41.9 µg kg–1), fast food (0.54-68 µg kg–1), and adult menus (0.43-638 µg kg–1). The recovery of different amounts of spiked mercury ranged from 98.6 to 104.9%, and the method’s accuracy was checked with an analysis of different certified reference materials. The limits of detection and quantification obtained were 0.1 and 0.3 µg kg–1, respectively, with a relative standard deviation of up to 11%. The contribution of the samples to the TDI varied as follows: baby food (0.3-28%), fast food (0.5-102%), and adult menus (0.3-396%). Therefore, it was concluded that total mercury daily intake does not pose risks for Spanish children and adults if tuna is not included on their menu.

Total mercury determination in bivalves Anadara tuberculosa sold in open markets from Quito, Ecuador

This study aimed to quantify the amount of total mercury in bivalves Anadara tuberculosa supplied from Esmeraldas Province and sold in markets in the Metropolitan District of Quito, Ecuador. The determined total mercury concentration was compared to the permissible limits established by the European Commission and World Health Organization-Food and Agriculture Organization and health risk subsequently assessed. Sampling was conducted in five open markets and involved collecting fifteen specimens from each market. Total mercury was measured through cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrophotometry. Results showed that samples did not exceed the total mercury threshold value (0.5 mg kg−1). However, samples of Anadara tuberculosa from the Ofelia market, which receives fresh products from Eloy Alfaro canton, contained the highest mean levels of mercury contamination, 0.055 mg kg−1. This result could be associated to the influence of illegal mining activity in this area. In addition, methylmercury potential non-carcinogenic risk for consumers exceeded the threshold limit (>1) established by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The daily consumption rate (Rclim) was determined to be 26.61–38.50 g for a child weight of 14.5 kg, and 128.44–185.84 g for an adult weight of 70 kg. Thus, consuming a higher amount of Anadara tuberculosa could negatively affect human health.

The dynamics of mercury around an artisanal and small-scale gold mining area, Camarines Norte, Philippines.

To elucidate the dynamics of mercury emitted and released by artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) activity and to estimate its impact on the ecosystems of the bay, the distribution of mercury in the atmosphere, soil, water, and sediment around Mambulao Bay, Camarines Norte, Philippines, was investigated. The ASGM operations use mercury to extract gold from ore and are located on the east shore side of the bay. Samplings were conducted in August 2017 and September 2018. The samples were used for determination of total mercury (T-Hg) and organic mercury (org-Hg) concentrations, total organic carbon (TOC) content, and chemical composition. The atmospheric mercury concentration on the east shore side, 6.1-25.8ngm-3, was significantly higher than the value of 1.4-9.9ngm-3 observed on the west shore side. The average concentrations of T-Hg in the forest soils of the west shore side and those of the east shore side were 0.081 ± 0.028mgkg-1 and 0.496 ± 0.439mgkg-1, respectively. In the vertical distribution of T-Hg in the soil of the east shore side, a higher concentration was observed near the surface. For the vertical variations in T-Hg in the marine sediment, higher values were observed near the estuary, and the vertical variations in core samples showed an increase in mercury concentration toward the surface. The highest concentration of T-Hg in sediment, 9.5mgkg-1, which was 2 orders of magnitude higher than the background levels of this area, was found near the river mouth. The T-Hg, org-Hg, and TOC levels showed a positive correlation, suggesting that the rivers are the main sources of T-Hg and org-Hg in the bay. Although the fish sample containing a mercury content higher than the regulatory level for fish and shellfish of 0.4mgkg-1 in Japan was only one of 42 samples, the percentage of org-Hg in fish samples was 91 ± 18%. Mercury released into the surroundings by the ASGM activities can be converted into methylmercury and affect the bay's ecosystem.

Determination and speciation of methyl mercury and total mercury in fish tissue samples by gold-coated W-coil atom trap cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry

A sensitive analytical technique was developed where gaseous mercury formed by sodium tetrahydroborate reduction is transported to and trapped on a resistively heated gold-coated Tungsten-coil atom trap for in situ preconcentration. This technique was applied successfully for determination and speciation of methyl mercury and total mercury in some fish tissue samples (liver, muscle and gill) obtained from Muğla province. The analytical parameters were optimized both for trap and no-trap studies. Under the optimized conditions, a limit of detection (LOD) of 6.0 ng/L was obtained. The precision was evaluated by relative standard deviation (RSD%) corresponding to 4.1% (n = 11). Accuracy of the proposed method was evaluated by analyzing “DOLT:5 Dogfish Liver”, “NIST SRM 1640a Trace elements in natural water” and “NIST 1946 Lake Superior fish tissues”. The measurements of the certified reference materials were in good agreement with the certified values at the 95% confidence level.

Mercury metalloproteomic profile in muscle tissue of Arapaima gigas from the Brazilian Amazon.

Metalloproteomics is an innovative methodology for identifying of protein-associated mercury. Thus, we analyzed the muscle proteome of Arapaima gigas (pirarucu), collected in the Madeira River of the Brazilian Amazon, to identify protein-associated mercury, with the aim of identifying possible mercury biomarkers in fish muscle tissue. After obtaining the protein pellet, we conducted two-dimensional electrophoresis (2D PAGE) to fractionate the muscle proteome. Total mercury in muscle tissue and protein pellets and mapping of mercury content in protein spots of the 2D PAGE gels was determined using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). The protein-associated mercury identification was performed using liquid chromatography coupled with sequence mass spectrometry (LC‒MS/MS). Total mercury determinations by GFAAS indicated concentrations on the order of 153 ± 1.90mgkg-1 and 142 ± 1.50mgkg-1 (total precipitation of protein fraction) and 139 ± 1.45mgkg-1 (fractional precipitation of protein fraction) in muscle tissue and protein pellets, respectively. Mercury concentrations in the range of 48 ± 0.90 to 165 ± 3.00mgkg-1 were found in twelve protein spots. Among the 2D PAGE protein spots, eleven Hg-binding proteins were identified using LC‒MS/MS, which showed characteristics of mercury exposure biomarkers for important metabolic functions, such as five parvalbumin isoforms, triosephosphate isomerase, cofilin 2 (muscle), and fructose-bisphosphate aldolases.

Mercury concentration in the tissues of the Eurasian otter: a seasonal dependance in Slovakia.

The river otter is considered to be an important bioindicator of water clarity. This study focuses on mercury contamination within this species. Throughout the study, individuals from habitats in the foothills and surroundings of the Liptovská Mara reservoir were analyzed. Twenty-three samples of liver tissue, and twenty-two samples of hair and kidney tissue were collected. Of these samples, the average mercury concentration detected in tissues was 10.6mg/kg in guard hairs; 12.9mg/kg in under hairs; 3.3mg/kg in kidney tissue; and 4.3mg/kg in liver tissue. Analysis of certified reference material (ERM-BB186-Pig Kidney) was used to assist in the development of an accurate method for total mercury determination in animal tissues, to check the quality of measurements, and to validate the measurement method. Our method represented a high average percentage of recovery (> 95%) in the standard reference material matrix and a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 5% or less. Seasonality was determined to be a significant factor influencing the level of contamination of a given individual, both through mercury methylation within the aquatic environment and through fish ingestion by this apex semi-aquatic predator (guard hairs (p = 0.01); underfur (p = 0.04); kidney (p = 0.03); liver (p = 0.03)). Sex, location, and body size were not found to have a significant influence on heavy metal concentrations in river otters sampled in terms of season.

A method for the analysis of methylmercury and total Hg in fungal matrices.

The aim of the study was to develop an efficient method for the determination of monomethyl-mercury (MeHg) and total mercury (THg) content in materials such as fungal sporocarps and sclerotia. Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) with the assigned values of MeHg and THg as well as the control materials (dried mushrooms) with known content of THg were evaluated for method validation. Recovery of MeHg from reference materials was at the following levels: from tuna fish at 87.0 ± 2.3% (THg at 101.9 ± 1.2%), from fish protein at 99.4 ± 1.3% (THg at 92.70 ± 0.41%), and from dogfish liver at 96.45 ± 0.73%. Recovery of THg from the fungal control material CS-M-5 was at 104.01 ± 0.60% (contribution of MeHg in THg content was at 6.2%), from CS-M-4 at 101.1 ± 2.0% (contribution at 3.2%), from CS-M-3 at 100.55 ± 0.67% (contribution at 0.6%), and from CS-M-2 at 101.5 ± 2.7% (contribution at 3.7%). The content of MeHg in randomly selected wild fungi and their morphological parts was in the range from 0.006 to 0.173mgkg-1 dry weight (dw). In the case of THg, the concentration values were in the range from 0.0108 to 10.27mgkg-1 dw. The MeHg content in the control materials with the assigned THg values was determined. Since the control materials play an important role in all elements of the quality assurance system of measurement results, they can be used to analyse MeHg as the first control material for fungi. KEY POINTS: • An extraction procedure for MeHg analysis in fungi was developed and optimized. • Recovery of MeHg from the certified reference non-fungal materials was > 87%. • Fungal control materials with assigned THg concentration can serve also for MeHg analysis.

On-Site Determination of Methylmercury by Coupling Solid-Phase Extraction and Voltammetry.

A measurement and speciation procedure for the determination of total mercury (HgTOT), inorganic mercury (HgIN), and methylmercury (CH3Hg) was developed and the applicability for on-site determination was demonstrated. A simple, portable sample pretreatment procedure was optimized to extract the analytes. Home-made columns, packed with a new sorbent material called CYXAD (CYPHOS 101 modified Amberlite XAD), were used to separate the two forms of the analyte. HgTOT and CH3Hg were determined by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV), using a solid gold electrode (SGE). Two certified reference materials (BCR-463 Tuna Fish and Tuna Fish ERM-CE 464) and eight fresh fishes were analyzed. Then, the results that were obtained following the optimized portable procedure were compared with the concentrations obtained, using a direct mercury analyzer (DMA). This quantification, using the two techniques, demonstrated the good performance of the proposed method.

Simple Acid Digestion Procedure for the Determination of Total Mercury in Plankton by Cold Vapor Atomic Fluorescence Spectroscopy.

Plankton, at the bottom of the food web, play a central role in the entry of mercury into the aquatic biota. To investigate their role in mercury uptake, reliable analytical procedures for Hg analysis are highly sought. Wet digestion procedures for determining total mercury in different biological matrices have been established since years, however only few studies focused on planktonic samples. In the present work, a simple and cost-effective wet digestion method was developed for the determination of total mercury in samples of small plankton material using a cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (CVAFS). The optimization of the digestion method was achieved by using glass vessels with Teflon caps, low amount of acids (3 mL w/w 65% HNO3 or 3 mL 50% v/v HNO3), a constant temperature of 85 °C, the presence and absence of pre-ultrasound treatment, and a continuous digestion period (12 h). Certified reference materials IAEA-450 (unicellular alga Scenedesmus obliquus) and BRC-414 (plankton matrix) were used to optimize and validate the digestion method. The recovery efficiency of the proposed method for IAEA-450 and BCR-414 (3.1 mg and 21.5 mg) ranged between 94.1 ± 7.6% and 97.2 ± 4.6%. The method displayed a good recovery efficiency and precision for plankton matrices of low size. Thus, allowing better digestion of planktonic samples for mercury analysis using CVAFS techniques.

Determination of Total Arsenic, Soluble Arsenic, Total Mercury and Soluble Mercury for a Realgar and Cinnabar-containing Traditional Chinese Medicine Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan Capsule by Semi-bionic Extraction- ICP-MS

Background:: Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule is a realgar and cinnabar-containing traditional Chinese medicine, the contents of total arsenic and total mercury are found over regulation defined limits. However, only a small amount of arsenic in realgar and mercury in cinnabar are dissolved in the gastric juice, so the determination of soluble arsenic and soluble mercury is more significant than that of total arsenic and total mercury in Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule. Objective: : To study the contents of total arsenic, total mercury, soluble arsenic and soluble mercury in Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule. Method:: Microwave digestion and semi-bionic extraction were used to pretreat the samples of Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule, and the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry method was established to determine the contents of total arsenic, total mercury, soluble arsenic and soluble mercury in Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule. The accuracy of the established method was further evaluated by using a certified standard reference material prepared from dried citrus leaves (GBW10020(GSB-11)). Results: : The spiked recoveries were within 95-105 %. The R.S.D% of repeatability (N=6) and precision (N = 6) were below 5.0 %. The correlation coefficients of linear (R) for arsenic and mercury were both above 0.998. The limits of quantification (LOQ) were below 0.1 μg/L. The contents of As and Hg were defined in the dried citrus leaves and very near to the standard values provided by the manufacturer. The established method was applied to the analysis of three batches of Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule produced by three different manufacturers successfully. Insufficient realgar or cinnabar was formulated in some Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule samples. Conclusion: : The analysis showed that the contents of soluble arsenic and soluble mercury in artificial gastric juice were significantly less than that of total arsenic and total mercury in Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule. The results provided a reference for further study on the toxicology and pharmacokinetics of Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule.

Determination of Total Mercury and Carbon in a National Baseline Study of Urban House Dust

Mercury (Hg) is one of the top ten chemicals of concern for public health, according to the World Health Organization. This study investigates Hg concentrations in house dust collected from urban single family homes, to better understand typical indoor residential exposures. Using direct solid sample analysis, total Hg and carbon (TC) were determined in the <80 µm fraction of settled dust samples collected under the Canadian House Dust Study. Hg concentrations displayed a log-normal distribution with median/geomean of 0.68/0.70 mg/kg (n = 995). A small subset (<1%) of homes exhibited anomalously high dust Hg concentrations (>9.0 mg/kg). A comparison of Hg concentrations in fresh dust and household vacuum dust collected from the same homes indicated no significant difference in the two sampling methods. Total carbon concentrations displayed a median/geomean of 29.3/28.5% (n = 1011). A significant correlation between total Hg and TC in house dust (p < 0.00001) reflects the association between Hg and organic carbon previously observed in soil and sediments. The results of this study indicate a 10-fold enrichment in house dust compared with the average background concentrations reported for soil and sediments (0.07 mg/kg). The observed enrichment is attributable to Hg emissions from indoor sources and/or Hg carried home from occupational sources.

Implementation of mercury biomonitoring in German adults using dried blood spot sampling in combination with direct mercury analysis

Venous blood is a preferred matrix for the determination of total mercury (Hg) in human biomonitoring but has some drawbacks such as the requirement for an uninterrupted cold chain for transport and storage and the need of medical personnel for sample collection. Therefore, we tested and implemented a simpler and less expensive method for measuring Hg in human blood using dried blood spots (DBS). For method development, we investigated the influence of different storage conditions (temperature, storage vessel, time) on DBS samples. For method validation, we compared DBS and venous blood and investigated whether DBS sampling is suitable for measuring Hg in the general population in countries with low Hg exposure such as Germany. Based on our results, we found that pre-cleaned glass tubes were most suitable for storage of DBS samples, as this allowed the samples to remain stable for at least 4 weeks even at high temperatures (40 °C). When comparing venous blood and DBS, a very good correlation (r = 0.95, p < 0.01, Spearman-Rho) and high precision of DBS (mean relative standard deviation 8.2% vs. 7.2% in venous blood samples) were observed. Comparing the recoveries of both matrices in different concentration ranges, the variation of the recoveries decreases with increasing Hg concentration. The mean recoveries also decreased with increasing Hg concentration. Overall, we found comparable results for DBS and venous blood using direct Hg analysis. Furthermore, we demonstrated that DBS are suitable for Hg biomonitoring in the general population in Germany and improved the storage conditions for the DBS.

Determination of Total Mercury in Solid Samples by Anodic Stripping Voltammetry

The anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) was investigated to determine total mercury in solid samples using a gold electrode. The mercury was deposited on the gold electrode in a preconcentration step. The oxidation peak of mercury was irreversible. The optimal conditions of the procedure were found to be as follows: 0.05 mol L−1 HCl solution, deposition potential −0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl/KCls, deposition time 40 s, and sweep rate 0.04 V s−1. Under the optimal conditions, the peak current showed a linear dependence on Hg2+ concentration in the range from 0.01 to 0.1 mg l−1. The detection limit and quantification limit were 4.28 µg L−1 and 12.98 µg L−1, respectively. The mean recovery and relative standard deviation were 91.2% and 2.4% (n = 9). The procedure was successfully applied for determining total mercury in samples collected from Hanoi light bulb warehouse—The Rang Dong Light Source and Vacuum Flask JSC. The results were compared with cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CV-AAS).

Total mercury concentration in the fur of free-ranging giant otters in a large Neotropical floodplain

The giant otter, Pteronura brasiliensis, (Zimmermann, 1780), is a semiaquatic carnivore that feeds mainly on fish. Mercury has high toxicity and high potential for bioaccumulation in tissues and biomagnification in organisms through food chains. Thus, as a top predator in the trophic chain, the giant otter has the potential to accumulate mercury by biomagnification. The objective of the present study was to measure the total mercury concentration in giant otter fur samples from an area in the southern Brazilian Pantanal. Fur samples from 19 otters from different social groups were collected from captured animals or were sampled with biopsy darts. Total mercury determination was performed by cold steam spectrophotometry. Mercury concentrations found in the giant otter fur were 7.15 ± 3.41 μg g−1 (2.01–12.06 μg g−1) dry weight. The values are above to the upper limit found in fur samples of otter species not exposed to contamination sources, which typically range from 1 to 5 μg g−1. The concentrations found in the study area indicate that even in the southern Pantanal, which is approximately 475 km from gold mining activity, mercury can be considered a threat for giant otters, as well as for riverside populations. It is also important to consider that other anthropogenic sources of mercury, such as pesticides used in agriculture, could affect this population.

Mercury speciation in edible seaweed by liquid chromatography - Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry after ionic imprinted polymer-solid phase extraction

In contrast to most of essential and heavy metals, mercury levels in seaweed are very low, and pre-concentration methods are required for an adequate total mercury determination and mercury speciation in this foodstuff. An ionic imprinted polymer-based solid phase extraction (on column) pre-concentration procedure has been optimized for mercury species enrichment before liquid chromatography hyphenated with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry determination. The polymer has been synthesized by the precipitation polymerization method and using a ternary pre-polymerization mixture containing the template (methylmercury), a non-vinylated monomer (phenobarbital), and a vinylated monomer (methacrylic acid). Factors affecting the adsorption/desorption of Hg species (extract pH, loading and elution flow rates, volume of eluent, etc.), and parameters such as breakthrough volume and reusability, were fully studied. Mercury species were first isolated from seaweed by ultrasound assisted extraction using a 0.1% (v/v) HCl, 0.12% (w/v) l-cysteine, 0.1% (v/v) mercaptoethanol solution. Under optimized conditions, the limits of detection were 0.007 and 0.02 μg kg−1 dw for methylmercury and Hg(II), respectively. The pre-concentration factor (volume of 10 mL of seaweed extract) was 50. Repeatability and reproducibility of the method were satisfactory with relative standard deviations lower than 16%. The proposed methodology was finally applied for the selective pre-concentration and determination of methylmercury and Hg (II) in a BCR-463 certified reference material and in several edible seaweeds.

Dynamics of mercury in the plankton of a hydroelectric reservoir, Western Amazon.

The energy transfer in the aquatic food chain is an important way for mercury (Hg) to enter other trophic levels. The objective of this work was to evaluate the Hg concentrations in plankton upstream and downstream of the Samuel Hydroelectric Reservoir, Rondônia, Brazil. Phytoplankton and zooplankton samples were collected with 20-μm and 68-μm nylon nets. An aliquot was removed for taxonomic analysis and another for total mercury determination, performed by cold vapor atomic absorption spectroscopy. Water physical-chemical parameters were also measured. The Hg concentrations in total plankton (phytoplankton and zooplankton samples) obtained at the three sampling upstream stations showed the same behavior, with the highest values registered in June 2005 (232 μg kg-1, 118 μg kg-1, 128 μg kg-1). The lowest values at stations J1 and M1 were recorded in November 2005 (4 μg kg-1 and 22 μg kg-1, respectively), while the lowest values at stations M4 and M8 were recorded in October 2005 (22 μg kg-1 and 5 μg kg-1, respectively). The Hg results found in the plankton in this study corroborate the results of other recent studies in the same region. The statistical analyses revealed that Hg concentrations in plankton do not explain the distribution of these organisms at the four sampling stations of Samuel Reservoir. Graphical Abstract.
