Deciphering Local Structural Complexity in Zn/Ga-ZrO2 CO2 Hydrogenation Catalysts.

In the last few decades, massive effort has been expended in heterogeneous catalysis to develop new materials presenting high conversion, selectivity, and stability even under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. In this context, CO2 hydrogenation is an interesting reaction where the catalyst local structure is strongly related to the development of an active and stable material under hydrothermal conditions at T/P > 300 °C/30 bar. In order to clarify the relationship between catalyst local ordering and its activity/stability, we herein report a combined laboratory and synchrotron investigation of aliovalent element (Ce/Zn/Ga)-containing ZrO2 matrixes. The results reveal the influence of similar average structures with different short-range orderings on the catalyst properties. Moreover, a further step toward the comprehension of the oxygen vacancy formation mechanism in Ce- and Ga-ZrO2 catalysts is reported. Finally, the reported results illustrate a robust method to guide local structure determination and ultimately help to avoid overuse of the "solid solution" definition.

Optimization of anesthetic decision-making in ERAS using Bayesian network.

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) can accelerate patient recovery. However, little research has been done on optimizing the ERAS-related measures and how the measures interact with each other. The Bayesian network (BN) is a graphical model that describes the dependencies between variables and is also a model for uncertainty reasoning. In this study, we aimed to develop a method for optimizing anesthetic decisions in ERAS and then investigate the relationship between anesthetic decisions and outcomes. First, assuming that the indicators used were independent, the effects of combinations of single indicators were analyzed based on BN. Additionally, the impact indicators for outcomes were selected with statistical tests. Then, based on the previously selected indicators, the Bayesian network was constructed using the proposed structure learning method based on Strongly Connected Components (SCC) Local Structure determination by Hill Climbing Twice (LSHCT) and adjusted according to the expert’s knowledge. Finally, the relationship is analyzed. The proposed method is validated by the real clinical data of patients with benign gynecological tumors from 3 hospitals in China. Postoperative length of stay (LOS) and total cost (TC) were chosen as the outcomes. Experimental results show that the ERAS protocol has some pivotal indicators influencing LOS and TC. Identifying the relationship between these indicators can help anesthesiologists optimize the ERAS protocol and make individualized decisions.

Local structure determination of Zn-smectite

Abstract An aluminum-free zinc-bearing smectite (Zn-smectite) was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions, together with its magnesium substituted products. Its layer charge calculated by cation exchange capacity (CEC) is 117.4 mmol/100 g. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed turbostratic stacking and showed that the d06l value of the Zn-smectite was >1.525 Å, indicating that it is trioctahedral. Its d001 value increased from ca.12.8 Å to ca. 16.0 Å after ethylene glycol (EG) saturation. The Zn-smectite did not irreversibly collapse after heating the Li+-saturated sample to 300 °C, suggesting that its layer charge was generated from octahedral-site vacancies (defects). The Zn-smectite resembles zincsilite-like minerals with interlayer Na+ and Zn2+. The intralayer structure of zincsilite was confirmed by pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, and the whole crystal structure was built and optimized by DFT calculation in the CASTEP module of the Materials Studio software. Synthetic zincsilite is triclinic, space group P1, and its optimized unit-cell parameters are: a = 5.294 Å, b = 9.162 Å, c = 12.800 Å, α = 90.788°, β = 98.345°, and γ = 90.399°.

Determination of Al occupancy and local structure for β-(AlxGa1−x)2O3 alloys across nearly full composition range from Rietveld analysis

Al occupancy and local structure (bond lengths and bond angles) for monoclinic β-(AlxGa1−x)2O3 alloys, with Al compositions (x) up to 90%, have been determined from Rietveld refinement of x-ray diffraction data. An Al atom preferentially occupies an octahedron (Oh) atomic site in comparison with a tetrahedron (Td) atomic site. However, a sizable number of Td atomic sites, i.e., 20% for Al composition of 5%, remain occupied by Al atoms, which is found to increase sharply with Al composition. The Oh atomic sites are not fully occupied by Al atoms even for the Al composition of 90%. The lattice parameters (bandgap) of the β-(AlxGa1−x)2O3 alloy decrease (increase) linearly with Al composition, but a change in slope of the variation of both lattice parameters and bandgap is observed at around Al composition of 50%. The lattice is found to be distorted for Al compositions more than 50% as indicated by a large change in the bond angles. The lattice distortion is determined to be the origin for the observed change in slope of the variation of both lattice parameters and bandgap for a monoclinic β-(AlxGa1−x)2O3 alloy system. Our results provide an insight into the local structure of β-(AlxGa1−x)2O3 alloys, which are required to have better understanding of their physical properties.

In Situ Determination of Speciation and Local Structure of NaCl-SrCl2 and LiF-ZrF4 Molten Salts.

Understanding the local environment of the metal atoms in salt melts is important for modeling the properties of melts and predicting their behavior and thus helping enable the development of technologies such as molten salt reactors and solar-thermal power systems and new approaches to recycling rare-earth metals. Toward that end, we have developed an in situ approach for measuring the coordination of metals in molten salt coupling X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Raman spectroscopy. Our approach was demonstrated for two salt mixtures (1.9 and 5 mol % SrCl2 in NaCl, 0.8 and 5 mol % ZrF4 in LiF) at up to 1100 °C. Near-edge (X-ray absorption near-edge structure, XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra were measured. The EXAFS response was modeled using ab initio FEFF calculations. Strontium's first shell is observed to be coordinated with chlorine (Sr2+-Cl-) and zirconium's first shell is coordinated by fluorine (Zr4+-F-), both having coordination numbers that decrease with increasing temperature. Multiple zirconium complexes are believed to be present in the melt, which may interfere and distort the EXAFS spectra and result in an anomalously low zirconium first shell coordination number. The use of boron nitride (BN) powder as a salt diluent for XAFS measurements was found to not interfere with measurements and thus can be used for investigations of such systems.

Artificial synthesis of covalent triazine frameworks for local structure and property determination.

Here we show an 'artificial synthesis' method for covalent triazine framework (CTF) materials, enabling localised structural features to be incorporated that result directly from the acid-catalysed synthetic protocol that would otherwise not be captured. This advancement will enable prediction and design of new CTF materials with targeted properties.

Recovering local structure information from high-pressure total scattering experiments.

High pressure is a powerful thermodynamic tool for exploring the structure and the phase behaviour of the crystalline state, and is now widely used in conventional crystallographic measurements. High-pressure local structure measurements using neutron diffraction have, thus far, been limited by the presence of a strongly scattering, perdeuterated, pressure-transmitting medium (PTM), the signal from which contaminates the resulting pair distribution functions (PDFs). Here, a method is reported for subtracting the pairwise correlations of the commonly used 4:1 methanol:ethanol PTM from neutron PDFs obtained under hydro-static compression. The method applies a molecular-dynamics-informed empirical correction and a non-negative matrix factorization algorithm to recover the PDF of the pure sample. Proof of principle is demonstrated, producing corrected high-pressure PDFs of simple crystalline materials, Ni and MgO, and benchmarking these against simulated data from the average structure. Finally, the first local structure determination of α-quartz under hydro-static pressure is presented, extracting compression behaviour of the real-space structure.

Understanding Single-Atom Catalysis in View of Theory.

In the past decade, isolated single atoms have been successfully dispersed on various substrates, with their potential applications being intensively investigated in different reactions. While the essential target of research in single-atom catalysis is the precise synthesis of stable single-atom catalysts (SACs) with clear configurations and impressive catalytic performance, theoretical investigations have also played important roles in identifying active sites, revealing catalytic mechanisms, and establishing structure–activity relationships. Nevertheless, special attention should still be paid in theoretical works to the particularity of SACs. In this Perspective, we will summarize the theoretical progress made on the understanding of the rich phenomena in single-atom catalysis. We focus on the determination of local structures of SACs via comparison between experiments and simulations, the discovery of distinctive catalytic mechanisms induced by multiadsorption, synergetic effects, and dynamic evolutions, to name a few, the proposal of criteria for theoretically designing SACs, and the extension of original concepts of single-atom catalysis. We hope that this Perspective will inspire more in-depth thinking on future theoretical studies of SACs.

Local atomic structure determination of the amorphous verapamil HCl drug

We investigate the local atomic structure of verapamil hydrochloride in the amorphous state (a-VRPH) using the pair distribution function (PDF) and Reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) methods. We obtain the a-VRPH sample from its crystalline counterpart (c-VRPH) using the solvent evaporation technique. From the measured X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) data for a-VRPH and c-VRPH, two total structure factors S(Q) are derived, and Fourier transforming them, two total reduced distribution functions, γ(R), are obtained. We refine the XRPD pattern of c-VRPH using the Rietveld method to confirm the sample's crystal structure is the pure c-VRPH. The partial Sij(Q) factors and PDF functions are simulated based on the VRPH crystal structure found in the Cambridge Structural Database® (CSD). The PDF and RMC analyses allow us to observe some similarities between a-VRPH and c-VRPH at the intramolecular level and the main differences at the intermolecular level induced by the amorphization process.

HOLOGRAPHIC CONVERGENT ELECTRON BEAM DIFFRACTION (CBED) IMAGING OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL CRYSTALS

Convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) performed on two-dimensional (2D) materials recently emerged as a powerful tool to study structural and stacking defects, adsorbates, atomic 3D displacements in the layers, and the interlayer distances. The formation of the interference patterns in individual CBED spots of 2D crystals can be considered as a hologram, thus the CBED patterns can be directly reconstructed by conventional reconstruction methods adapted from holography. In this study, we review recent results applying CBED to 2D crystals and their heterostructures: holographic CBED on bilayers with the reconstruction of defects and the determination of interlayer distance, CBED on 2D crystal monolayers to reveal adsorbates, and CBED on multilayered van der Waals systems with moiré patterns for local structural determination.

Nanoscale structural analysis of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3

The determination of local atomic structure at nanoscale for inhomogeneous systems is challenging. The local arrangement of atoms needs to be studied to understand the local or short-range order structures for disordered materials with a lack of long-range order periodicity. Pair distribution function (PDF) analysis is a technique, that is used to study the short-range order structure of materials: this technique is based on the evaluation of local atomic arrangement using synchrotron and neutron sources. An attempt was made to determine the local arrangement at 20 nm-scale for a typical relaxor ferroelectric material, Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN). The PDF technique was employed owing to the limited structural coherence in this disordered material. It was determined that there are three types of structures depending on the distance. A glass-like network structure was observed as a short-range order structure owing to the large off-center shift of lead atoms. With an increase in distance, the structure of PMN changed from rhombohedral to cubic. Using the above-mentioned approach, we elucidated the process of local structure averaging.

Study of Short-range Ordering in Amorphous and Nanocrystalline Materials from Laboratory based Pair Distribution Function (LPDF)

Determination of local atomic structure at nanoscale for both amorphous and nanocrystalline materials is very difficult and challenging. Local arrangement of atoms needs to be studied for understanding the local or short-range structural information. Pair distribution function (PDF) analysis is a technique used to study the short-range structure of the materials based on local atomic arrangement of atoms using synchrotron and neutron sources. But there is a demand for routine analysis based on laboratory X-ray diffractometer (XRD) using Ag radiation (λ=0.5608 Å) with maximum achievable Q value of 22 Å–1. An attempt has been taken to study the short-range structure in crystalline Ni, silica glass (SiO2) and nano silica using total scattering experiment to show the capabilities and usefulness of PDF technique in laboratory XRD and are compared with the data from synchrotron radiation to achieve good quality scattering data and optimizing technical feasibility of the optics. PDF results of Ni showed the goodness of optical alignment. The first Si-O distance for both silica samples signified that they hold short- range order within the tetrahedral unit while differences are observed at higher radial distances. Laboratory based PDF experiment helped to get local/short- range structural information for better understanding the multifunctional properties of nano and disordered materials.

Combining density functional theory and 23Na NMR to characterize Na2FePO4F as a potential sodium ion battery cathode

Sodium ion batteries offer an inexpensive alternative to lithium ion batteries, particularly for large-scale applications such as grid storage that do not require fast charging rates and high power output. Moreover, the use of polyanionic structures as cathode materials afford incredibly high structural stability relative to layered transition metal oxides that can undergo a structural collapse upon full removal of the charge carrying ions. Sodium iron fluorophosphate, Na2FePO4F, has demonstrated its viability as a potential cathode material for sodium ion batteries, having a robust framework even after multiple charge-discharge cycles. Although solid-state NMR has traditionally been an excellent method for the determination of local structure and dynamic properties of cathode materials during the electrochemical cycling process, reliable assignment of the 23Na chemical shifts resulting from the paramagnetic hyperfine interaction can be difficult when using only empirical rules. Here we present the use of density functional theory calculations to assign the experimentally observed NMR shifts to the crystallographic sites in Na2FePO4F, where it is found that the results do not agree with the previously reported assignment based upon simple geometry arguments. Furthermore, we report the justification of the proposed desodiation mechanism in Na2FePO4F on the basis of theoretical arguments, in good agreement with experimental NMR results reported previously.

Local structure determination in helimagnetic

We have carried out a structural and magnetic characterization of Co8Zn8+yMn4−y−xFex by means of bulk techniques, powder neutron scattering and Mössbauer spectroscopy. From our data, we derive the main magnetic parameters and carry out a detailed structural characterization. We observe that disorder is present in our samples in various forms and that this seems to be generic for this class of materials. However, the disorder appears to have little impact on the character of the magnetic phases, and thus seems to be of no relevance for the skyrmionic phases established for these types of materials.

Allosteres to regulate neurotransmitter sulfonation

Catecholamine neurotransmitter levels in the synapses of the brain shape human disposition-cognitive flexibility, aggression, depression, and reward seeking-and manipulating these levels is a major objective of the pharmaceutical industry. Certain neurotransmitters are extensively sulfonated and inactivated by human sulfotransferase 1A3 (SULT1A3). To our knowledge, sulfonation as a therapeutic means of regulating transmitter activity has not been explored. Here, we describe the discovery of a SULT1A3 allosteric site that can be used to inhibit the enzyme. The structure of the new site is determined using spin-label-triangulation NMR. The site forms a cleft at the edge of a conserved ∼30-residue active-site cap that must open and close during the catalytic cycle. Allosteres anchor into the site via π-stacking interactions with two residues that sandwich the planar core of the allostere and inhibit the enzyme through cap-stabilizing interactions with substituents attached to the core. Changes in cap free energy were calculated ab initio as a function of core substituents and used to design and synthesize a series of inhibitors intended to progressively stabilize the cap and slow turnover. The inhibitors bound tightly (34 nm to 7.4 μm) and exhibited progressive inhibition. The cap-stabilizing effects of the inhibitors were experimentally determined and agreed remarkably well with the theoretical predictions. These studies establish a reliable heuristic for the design of SULT1A3 allosteric inhibitors and demonstrate that the free-energy changes of a small, dynamic loop that is critical for SULT substrate selection and turnover can be calculated accurately.

Determination of Local Structure of 13C Selectively Labeled 47-mer Peptides as a Model for Gly-Rich Region of Nephila clavipes Dragline Silk Using a Combination of 13C Solid-State NMR and MD Simulation

For the first time, we elucidate the complex structure of the Gly-rich regions in Nephila clavipes dragline silk through synergistic experimental and theoretical studies. First, the 13C selectively labeled 47-mer peptides selected from the glycine (Gly)-rich region of N. clavipes dragline silk were synthesized. The 13C CP/MAS NMR spectra were analyzed to determine the fractions of the conformations of individual Gly and Ala residues through 13C conformation-dependent chemical shifts and peak deconvolution. By comparing the 13C solid-state NMR spectra of several simple model peptides, the presence of 31 helix in the 47-mer peptides was disproved, and the (Ala)6 regions were shown to form β-sheet structure in the staggered arrangement. Although the fraction of β-sheet components tended to increase and the fraction of random coil component decrease toward both chain ends, significant change in the fractions was observed depending on the amino acid position. Local structural determination of N at SiO2/SiC(0001¯) interfaces by photoelectron diffraction

Nitridation effectively reduces the density of defects and improves the performance of SiC metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors. Photoelectron spectroscopy and diffraction can characterize the amorphous SiO2/SiC(0001¯) interface with nitridation treatment by oxidation in a N2O-containing atmosphere. The N 1s spectra indicate that N covers about 1/3 of the monolayer, and the N atoms are bonded to the Si atoms. Forward focusing peaks (FFPs) appear in the photoelectron diffraction patterns in the direction of the surrounding atoms around the excited atom. The similarity between the sixfold symmetric N 1s FFP pattern and the C 1s pattern strongly suggests that the majority of N atoms are located at C sites in the topmost layer of the 4H-SiC substrate where N bonds to three Si atoms. The local strains of the atomic arrangement around the N atoms are quantitatively evaluated by analyzing the FFP patterns corresponding to the third-nearest neighbor Si atoms.
