Determinants of sustainable development in the post-war recovery of Ukraine

Ukraine’s course towards sustainable development requires the implementation of modern practices of interaction in the triangle of the state, business and society. There is a need to develop institutional mechanisms for harmonization and strengthening comparability of corporate reporting at the international level in the context of the sustainable development goals. The purpose of the article was to develop organizational and methodological issues of monitoring the corporate sector’s contribution to achieving the sustainable development goals at the stage of Ukraine’s post-war recovery. Methods of analysis and synthesis (to study the consequences of Russia’s military aggression), comparison (when analysing the requirements of international normative acts for the structure, stages of formation and a set of reporting indicators), a process approach (for the development of recommendations for a database creation) have been applied in the research. The consequences of Russia’s military aggression for the economic development of Ukraine and the achievement of sustainable development goals have been analysed. The institutional mechanisms of strengthening harmonization and comparability of reporting on sustainable development at the international level in the context of the sustainable development goals achievement have been substantiated. Recommendations for the creation of the “State Repository of Reports on Sustainable Development of Enterprises and Organizations of Ukraine” have been developed. A national institutional model for the calculation of indicator 12.6.1 “The number of enterprises publishing reports on sustainable development” has been constructed. It is proposed to expand the set of indicators for releasing information on anti-corruption practices by disclosing indicator D.2.3 “Amount of funds (in US dollars) directed to anti-corruption measures, including the training of one employee on anti-corruption issues, per year”. The obtained results can be used for the development of institutional mechanisms for the coordination of global and strategic documents at the global and national levels in order to create a unified vision of the countries’ contribution to the achievement of sustainable development goals

Determinants of Sustainable Development among Malaysian Small and Medium Enterprises: A New Conceptual Framework

Sustainable development is an emerging paradigm designed to strike the balance between the ecological health of the planet and human development in a manner that ensures that both meet the needs of the present without compromising the future. However, little is known about the determinants of sustainable development among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. As such, the present study fills up the gaps by examining the relationship between integrated management systems, technology and innovation capability, sustainability orientation, green corporate image, government support and sustainable development. This research applies a quantitative survey method using a self-administrated survey questionnaire to collect data from SMEs in Malaysia. Data from this survey will be analyzed using PLS-SEM to examine the associative relationship between determinants of sustainable development and sustainable development. This study will contribute to the body of knowledge by documenting factors that lead to sustainable development, namely integrated management systems, technology and innovation capability, sustainability orientation, green corporate image and government support. It also will benefit both enterprises and the government in building competitive, resilient, and sustainable enterprises in the domestic and international markets.

Determinants of sustainable development: The role of CSR disclosure

This study intends to assess the impact of adopting green accounting and environmental performance on sustainable development, with CSR disclosure acting as a moderator. The population of the study consists of the palm oil companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange and the Malaysia Stock Exchange for the 2019–2021 period. Purposive sampling was utilized as a sampling method to select 45 businesses. Partial least squares analysis was performed to examine the data. The results showed that the implementation of green accounting (β = 0.231; p < 0.05) and environmental performance (β = 0.285; p < 0.05) affect the sustainable development of palm oil companies. Then, CSR disclosure strengthens the effect between the implementation of green accounting (β = 0.293; p < 0.05) and environmental performance (β = 0.150; p < 0.05) on the sustainable development of palm oil companies. This study helps companies that properly implement corporate social responsibility or care about environmental safety become the best investment opportunities. It also serves as the material for investors and potential investors to help them make the best decisions about companies that employ green accounting in corporate reporting.

Impact of Entrepreneurial Activity and ICT Development on Sustainable Development: Evidence from High-Income Countries

Sustainable development has become a vital issue in the globalizing world given the food insecurity, climate change, significant degradation of the environment and depletion of natural resources, and biodiversity loss. Therefore, the identification of the key factors behind sustainable development is important for the planning and application of the proper policies by countries. In this context, the institutional, demographic, social, and economic determinants of overall sustainable development have been extensively explored, but the interplay among sustainable development, entrepreneurial activity, and ICT development has stayed relatively untouched. This article investigates the effect of entrepreneurial activity, proxied by total early-stage entrepreneurial activity and ICT development, on the overall sustainable development of 15 high-income countries over the 2002–2018 period; it uses the Westerlund and Edgerton cointegration test with a structural break, taking notice of the gap in the empirical literature regarding the determinants of sustainable development. The cointegration analysis shows that entrepreneurial activity and ICT development have a positive influence on sustainable development in the long run, but that the effect of ICT on overall sustainable development is shown to be stronger in comparison to entrepreneurial activity. ICT penetration and entrepreneurial activity should be encouraged through institutional, educational, and fiscal incentives to make progress in sustainable development.

Circular economy as a determinant of sustainable development and competitiveness of Ukraine

Introduction. Environmental protection is one of the urgent tasks facing the whole world. Limited resources, environmental pollution, and climate change are becoming increasingly critical every year, so the issue of changing the approach to building the economy is urgent. Most European countries have long been familiar with the circular economy concept, but in Ukraine, this concept is only gaining popularity. A circular economy is an economy that functions based on the secondary use of resources, which makes it possible to improve the environment and minimize the use of limited resources, which are essential for the full functioning of all processes in the future. The purpose of scientific paper is to study the circular economy as a determinant of sustainable development and competitiveness of Ukraine. Results. The basic principles and principles of the circular economy are analyzed in the paper. An analysis of the structure and methods of household waste management was also carried out in the context of a five-year retrospective. In addition, an analysis and comparison of the structure of waste management in Ukraine and the EU countries was carried out. Based on the analysis, the main barriers on the way to building a sustainable economy were identified, namely: lack of regulated legislation, weak support from the state, unfavorable investment climate, lack of interest, and limited knowledge about sustainable development among the population and most entrepreneurs, cheapness of primary resources, which creates only favorable conditions for the continued functioning of the linear economy, low awareness of markets, and others. Conclusions. At a time of global and rapid changes, the issue of transition from a linear to a circular type of economy is an important aspect of the development of Ukraine and its economy. Such a transition requires both material and time resources, but the implementation of the principles and initiatives of the circular economy will increase competitiveness and ensure economic growth in the conditions of European integration, as well as solve several urgent problems related to ecology.

Higher education as a determinant of sustainable development

The purpose of the article is to study higher education using a systemic approach as a determinant of sustainable development. To achieve the goal, the scientists substantiated the main features of higher education as a system;identified the main prioritydirections in the field of higher education in a time frame;outlined the functions of education in the modern development of society;highlighted the role and principles of higher education in economic growth;substantiated the relationship and development trends of higher education with the goals of sustainable development in the direction of solving global problems of humanity.The methodological basis of this study is a systematic approach, which allows us to consider higher education as an open socialsystem with multi-vector and heterogeneous connections between elements, which has an interdependent impact on sustainable development. Taking into account changes in trends and priorities of the world economy, changes in the emphasis of higher education are highlighted. It has been studied that higher education ensures the development of the intellectual potential of the human community, contributes to the achievement of the goals of sustainable development and the consolidation of certain moral principles.

Green Finance Strategies for the Zero-Carbon Mechanism: Public Spending as New Determinants of Sustainable Development

A green economy is one that mainstreams nature and people’s concerns and provides well-paying jobs for the economy. In the past, researchers examined the relationship between financial growth and carbon emissions, and very limited studies examined the role of green finance in carbon extenuation. Based on these four indicators, which are sustainable credit, sustainable safety, sustainable insurance, and sustainable asset, a green finance index was developed in this study. In this study, a vector error correction model (VECM) is used to examine associations between the growth level of green finance, public spending, and the zero-carbon mechanism using data from 2005 to 2018. The results of this study indicate that China’s green finance industry had grown quickly, with enhancements in green finance and increased public spending, all contributing to reducing the country’s environmental degradation. The simultaneous increase in carbon intensity slowed the expansion of non-fossil energy usage, reduced the flow of investing in green projects, and finally deteriorated the development of green finance. Furthermore, renewable energy usage in China is chiefly influenced by carbon intensity and green finance, both of which had clear policy-driven consequences. The effects of green finance strategies have consistently fallen short of expectations and lacked consistency. This study makes recommendations for improving the effectiveness of green finance policy implementation and increasing renewable energy to reduce or erode the economic gains of the zero-carbon mechanism.

The sustainable enterprise development tetrad and assessment of its balance

The concept of sustainable development is traditionally associated with the economy, society, ecology, and building relationships between them. At the enterprise level, this means that economic, social and environmental goals are at least consistent with each other. The validity of this understanding is beyond doubt. However, in modern conditions it is practically impossible to ensure the long-term and competitive functioning of enterprises without the use of information technologies in their activities. This article provides arguments regarding the need to transform information stability from factors into a determinant of sustainable development, thereby turning the traditional triad into a tetrad. On the other hand, due to this expansion, it becomes more relevant to assess the balance of the sustainable development components. In this regard, the purpose of the study is to develop and apply a methodology for assessing the balance of the economic, social, environmental, and information components of sustainable development according to the criteria of reliability, dynamism, and acceptability. Research results of small and medium-sized enterprises in Russia indicate that only two out of fifteen enterprises achieved a high level of balanced sustainable development. In most cases, regardless the sustainable development level, the balance of determinants is at a lower level. Moreover, cases with a high but not balanced sustainable development confirmed the assumption that a high sustainability level for some determinants can compensate for a low sustainability level for others. The results obtained prove that the real vector of sustainable development can be determined only in accordance with the balance degree.

EU rail passenger transport: an important determinant of sustainable development

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has become the global blueprint for sustainable development. Sustainable development is supposed to change functioning of societies and economies in order to minimize negative ecological effects, at the same time providing for the needs of present and future generations. Due to its functions, transport is indispensable for meeting these needs, but it also generates demand for energy resources and has a negative impact on the environment. Appropriate shaping of transport systems is, therefore, an important element of the transformation of economies towards sustainable development and thus a key task for government policy. Rail is among the most energy efficient modes of transport for freight and passengers. The aim of this article is to assess the development of rail passenger transport in European Union countries on the basis of statistical data in the context of the need to transform mobility systems in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. The analysis of the data shows that the development of rail transport is low compared to road and air transport, which raises questions about the reasons for this fact and the further measures needed.

Assessment of the ecological potential of the region using the method of regression analysis and the coefficient of elasticity for sustainable development

One of the fundamental economic determinants of sustainable development is the optimal use of limited resources and the use of environmentally friendly-nature, energy, and material-saving technologies, including the extraction and processing of raw materials, the creation of environmentally friendly products, minimization, processing and disposal of waste. In this study, in order to clarify the indicator "ecological potential of the region", it is proposed to consider a number of indica-tors that, according to the authors, have a significant impact on this phenomenon. One of the significant indicators for assessing the ecological potential of the territo-ry is the indicator of the area of landfills for the disposal of solid municipal waste (MSW) in a particular region. The authors hypothesize that the change in the vol-umes of landfills for the disposal of solid municipal waste (MSW) in a particular region depends on the type of development of the territory. As the main defining indicators (factors-arguments) of the development of the region were chosen: the number of manufacturing enterprises, population and gross regional product (GRP) per capita. The authors have developed a regression model to determine the degree of influence of a number of socio-economic indicators on the volumes of landfills for the disposal of MSW. Significant parameters were determined for terri-tories with different types of regional development (extensive type of develop-ment. Using the method of regression analysis, it was found by calculation that for regions of all types of development, the decisive factor that affects the volume of landfills for the disposal of MSW is the population of the territory. With the help of the coefficient of elasticity, the closeness of the relationship of the considered fac-tors-arguments was determined.

Determining corporate direction in sustainable development: a multi-dimensional framework in B2B

PurposeThis study aims to assess the determinants of corporate direction in sustainable development through time in a B2B setting.Design/methodology/approachThis study has been conducted in one industry, and overcoming contextual bias as a judgmental sampling was used to select the organizations studied in a Business to Business (B2B) setting.FindingsThe determinants of sustainable development in this study indicate the existence of different corporate directions in a B2B setting taken through time in the healthcare organizations studied. The determinants found are change in organizational leadership, financial assets of the organization, religious orientation of the organization, organizational connection to the healthcare system, internal values of the organization and top-staff orientation in the organization.Research limitations/implicationsThe empirical findings reported in a B2B setting have disclosed key determinants of corporate direction in sustainable development.Practical implicationsThe determinants provide managerial guidance to assess the corporate direction in a B2B setting taken in the continuing development of sustainable practices in these organizations.Originality/valueThis study contributes to a multidimensional framework of determinants in a B2B setting to assess the corporate direction taken in sustainable development through time in a B2B setting. The organizational gap between past and present sustainable development provides guidance to assess the corporate direction in B2B taken by an organization into the future.

Manifestations and Measures of Frugal Innovations

In the opinion of many researchers, frugal innovations are often connected with sustainable development. This statement is proved by literature analysis, where frugality and frugal innovations are presented as a determinant of sustainable development. However, in most of the cases the lack of empirical evidence of this situation can be noticed. The article includes a review of the literature describing frugal innovation. In the article, the definitions of frugal innovations are compared with some empirical propositions for frugality measuring in the companies. The aim of the paper is to describe the issue of frugal innovation, its definitions, manifestations and ways of measuring. The reason of conducting the study is a desire of verification how deep is the issue analysed in the literature. In order to achieve the aim of the paper, the following objectives have been set: (1) to discuss current definitions of frugal innovations; (2) to present the ways how frugal innovations can be manifested; (3) to describe current propositions of frugal innovation measures and to discuss if can they be used to measure frugal innovation efficiency in the companies. The analysis is based on literature review. First of all, there is presented the method of the study and detailed description of the research sampling process. Presentation of frugal innovation definitions is the second step of the study. The next step is to show the most common manifestations of frugal innovations. Considerations about these two elements are the causes of identifying the measures, which helps to assess the efficiency of frugal innovations. The study confirms that there is still a huge demand for deeper investigation of the issue, because the current literature does not provide the comprehensive understanding of it. Determinants of Sustainable Development: National Dimension of Environmental Kuznets Curve

Purpose. The study objective was to model the conditions to reach the "turning point" in the environmental Kuznets curve model (EKC) for the Ukrainian economy. Меthods. In the research general scientific (analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, analytical grouping) and special (abstraction, modelling, etc.) methods of studying economic phenomena and processes have been used. Results. To determine the conditions for maintaining sustainable development of the national economy, it has been proposed to use sectoral approach. It is based on the idea that to reach the sustainable turning point in the EKC model for Ukraine, key parameters of its leading economic sectors have to be managed. Such industries for Ukraine are: processing; mining and quarry development; agriculture, forestry and fisheries; supply of electricity, gas, steam and conditioned air; transport, warehousing, post and courier service. It has been proved that sustainable turning point was not reached because mining, transport, warehousing, post and courier services, agriculture, forestry and fisheries put back. It has been demonstrated that processing industry and energy are the priority sectors for the development of Ukraine's economy, because they have the predominant economic conditions to get higher added value compared with mining, and Ukraine's agricultural capacity could be used to increase wages of the sector`s staff. It has been determined that transport sector`s negative trends are explained by few environmentally friendly vehicles in Ukraine and, as a result, higher recent emissions of air pollutants. Conclusions. It has been proved that EKC for Ukraine could be built on the basis of correlation between sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, oxide, carbon dioxide emissions and income per capita in Ukraine. It has been found out that Kuznets curve in Ukraine is "point"-like. The EKC based on correlation between emissions of air pollutants and average nominal income per capita in the leading sectors of the national economy has been proposed. It has been proved that it is possible to ensure sustainable development of Ukraine's economy by greening production within the existing structure of the national economy based on sectoral capital investment and intensification of government support policy of environment.

Determinants of sustainable development: Evidence from 12 Asian countries

AbstractThis study examines the factors that determine sustainable development, measured by adjusted net saving, using panel data for 12 Asian countries for the 1990–2014 period. A panel data model is estimated using both random‐effect and fixed‐effect approaches. The Hausman test points to the superiority of the random‐effect model over the fixed‐effect model, which is apparent when the results of the two estimations are compared. The results of the random‐effect estimation show a more significant and better overall fit. These results indicate a positive and significant effect of per capita income and financial development on sustainable development and a negative and significant effect of the inflation rate, natural resource rent, and time. The results suggest that maintaining a proper natural resource balance is necessary for sustainable development.

Relationship among HIV/AIDS Prevalence, Human Capital, Good Governance, and Sustainable Development: Empirical Evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa is regarded as the region that accommodates about 75% of the world HIV/AIDS prevalence as of 2016. Research on the relationship between the epidemic and sustainable development is scant in this part of the world, as available literature is dominated by studies that focus on HIV and economic growth. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between sustainable development and HIV/AIDS prevalence, along with other determinants of sustainable development, such as good governance and human capital in 26 sub-Saharan Africa countries over a 27-year period from 1990—2016. The pooled mean group (PMG) estimator was employed for analysis after it was confirmed by the Hausman test for the estimation of the relationship among the variables. The results revealed a unidirectional long-run and significant relationship between HIV/AIDS prevalence and sustainable development, human capital and good governance, and human capital and sustainable development. Also, a bidirectional long-run relationship was found between good governance and HIV/AIDS prevalence. Estimation of subgroups provides a robustness check for our findings. Therefore, the paper gives new insight to the government of sub-Saharan Africa countries and major stakeholders about how to attain sustainable development in the region, while intensifying efforts on reducing HIV/AIDS prevalence, and at the same time ensuring effective good governance and human capital development.

Inclusive Growth in CEE Countries as a Determinant of Sustainable Development

Pursuant to the concept of inclusive growth, the authors analyze the transition economies of Central and Eastern European countries, which have become EU members (Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia). CEE countries characterized by comparable historic and economic backgrounds now seem to reach diversified stages of development. The objective of the study is to identify the level of inclusive growth among CEE countries by taking into account indicators assigned to its seven pillars. The article’s thesis is that CEE countries represent social and economic heterogeneity as well as varied levels of sustainable development. Research methods included the application of the principal components analysis and the multivariate analysis. For a literature review, the bibliometric analysis was conducted with the visualization prepared by the VOSviewer software. The main findings suggest that Estonia, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic seem to exhibit the highest level of inclusive growth while Bulgaria and Romania represent the lowest level of indicators measured.
