Transnational lives interrupted: The Canadian state and Indian international student experiences during the COVID‐19 pandemic

AbstractCanada has emerged as a major education destination for international students from across the world. International students are understood to significantly contribute towards the labour market and economic growth of Canada including the higher education sector that has come to financially rely on international students. India has emerged as the largest source of international students to Canada in recent years making them a significant category of migrants impacted by the covid‐19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown measures implemented by the Canadian state. This paper looks at the experiences of Indian international students already in Canada and prospective students in India planning to pursue their studies in Canada. The pandemic delayed international education plans for many students in India while causing significant disruption to the studies, employment, and living arrangements of international students in Canada. Such disruptions created considerable uncertainty over their financial situation including meeting various eligibility requirements for work permit after graduation. This paper reveals the deeply embodied and personalised consequences for students in the face of state responses to balancing pandemic control and retaining financial and economic contribution during the pandemic.

Cross-Cultural Communication: A Study of Chinese International Students' Interactions with Malaysian Lecturers

An increasing number of Chinese international students are choosing Malaysia as their destination for higher education. Their unique communication habits and educational approaches significantly impact their interactions with lecturers and their self-management of studies. By analyzing these communication patterns through case studies, this research provides a partial perspective on the internationalization process of Malaysian higher education. However, it delves deeply into the life of eight Chinese international students, with a particular focus on their communication methods and relationships with Malaysian lecturers. This paper aims to enhance our understanding of how communication practices between students and teachers in Malaysia and other international universities worldwide affect the learning experiences of Chinese international students.

Rationales behind international students’ not selecting India as an education destination – An empirical investigation

India’s higher education sector faces significant challenges in attracting international students, evidenced by hosting less than 1 % of globally mobile students despite substantial efforts to increase this number. This study explores critical barriers preventing international students from choosing India as their destination, including financial constraints, safety concerns, and cultural integration issues. It also assesses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on these decisions and examines the potential of online education as an alternative. Findings reveal that inadequate financial support and safety concerns are primary deterrents, with varying impacts across educational levels and regions. Recommendations include enhancing financial aid, improving safety measures, fostering cultural integration, and leveraging online education. Addressing these issues is crucial for India to align with global education trends and improve its international appeal.

Identifying the Impact of Stringent Immigration Rules on International Students: The Case of Türkiye

Higher education is one area that has seen the most impact of globalisation, and the free exchange of scholarships is noted to be on the rise. By taking the course of other leading nations in higher education, such as the US and Canada, Türkiye, through the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), has since the early 2010s adopted a policy to increase international student enrolment in its universities. However, recent changes in the immigration laws by the Department for Immigration Management (Göç İdaresi) are noted to portend to thwart the efforts of YÖK in what could be said to be a case of conflicting roles between two state institutions. This study presents an analysis of the impacts of these stringent rules on international students by analysing survey results conducted on international students in Türkiye. The work contributes to both policy and scholarship. Its contribution to policy can be seen in its attempt to highlight the intricacies of finding a balance between national security concerns and the need to foster academic exchange and global engagement in higher education. The study also contributes to the general discipline of migration studies in addition to the field of urban and regional planning with direct contributions to areas such as global competitiveness of cities, urban growth dynamics, and cultural diversity and social integration of urban areas. This is made possible by considering the impacts of the influx of international students into cities and the challenges they face, which this study outlines. Key among the findings include the likelihood of persons who have reported having issues with Göç İdaresi not recommending Turkiye to others as a higher education destination. Thus, this demonstrates a case where immigration rules are having a counterproductive effect on the efforts put in by higher education policymakers.

The Plights of West-African Students in Turkish Universities: A Case Study of Gaziantep University

Like any other Western country, Turkiye is becoming an educational destination for many international students, especially Africans. Therefore, Turkiye emphasizes universities' internationalization, which brought rapid success to its political and economic trends. Therefore, this present study investigated the plights of West African students in Turkish universities, specifically focusing on the West African students at Gaziantep University. The study is based on a qualitative research design with a case study approach. This study used interviews and observation to collect data from 12 participants—one participant at least from each of the 10 West African countries presently active at Gaziantep University. The data collected were qualitatively analyzed based on common themes designed for this study. According to the findings of this current study, the language and prejudice of locals against West African students and the country they come from where the enormous challenges they faced while at Gaziantep University. Concerning these findings, the present study recommends addressing the problems mentioned earlier, such as special orientation programs organized by the university and other relevant bodies, which should be delivered by university staff familiar with Africans' socio-cultural heritage and economic and political background. Likewise, scholarships and financial support from the government and other relevant authorities should be given to West African students to overcome the financial problems they encountered during their stay at Gaziantep University

Increasing Motivation of Iranian Students to Continue Education in Germany. Challenges and Opportunities in Academia

The emigration of educated individuals from Iran has become a prominent and multifaceted issue in recent years, eliciting diverse perspectives. Statistical analysis reveals a substantial surge in the number of Iranian students electing Germany as their preferred destination for higher education. Notably, the count of Iranian students studying in Germany has witnessed a more than threefold increase, soaring from 4,182 students in 2008 to 13,279 in 2023. Moreover, the student population has nearly tripled from 4,182 in 2008 to 11,573 in 2021, signifying a 45% surge compared to the preceding year. This prompts an inquiry into the factors underpinning Iranian students' preference for Germany. To delve into this phenomenon, a survey was conducted among Iranians residing in Germany. The survey outcomes reveal that the deteriorating living conditions in Iran, coupled with Germany's political stability and robust social welfare system, have played pivotal roles in motivating students and university graduates to pursue education abroad. Educational advancement emerges as a secondary consideration in their decision-making process.

Black African Students in Predominantly White U.S. Higher Education Institutions

Black African students are increasingly choosing the United States as their preferred destination for higher education, and many choose to study at predominantly White institutions. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate factors that may influence their identification and commitment to those institutions. Researchers interviewed 20 sub-Saharan Africans at a predominantly White Southeastern university. Findings revealed that construed external image, overall satisfaction with the school, promotion of the institution, and willingness to maintain membership shape the extent to which Black African students are identified and committed to their university of choice. Furthermore, the study also found that prestige does not appear to influence Sub-Saharan African students' identification and commitment to a school in the U.S., but race has mixed effects depending on how it gets interpreted by students. These findings suggest implications for research and practice for student affairs professionals to better serve and retain their international populations.

Queer migration, heteronormativity and the ‘ethnic closet’: Chinese queer international students' intersectional experience in New Zealand

AbstractDrawing on semi‐structured in‐depth interviews with 15 Chinese queer international students from New Zealand's tertiary institutions, this paper explores their motivations to pursue higher education transnationally and unpacks the interconnected power structures underpinning their experiences. We find that despite the imagination and initial perception of New Zealand as one of the most queer‐friendly higher education destinations, Chinese queer international students are confronted by the ‘ethnic closet’—a heteronormative power structure simultaneously disciplining racial/ethnic and sexual identities. The interplay between these two key aspects of students' identity has meant that Chinese queer international students, as migrants who occupy disadvantaged positions in local racial power relations, frequently experience heteronormative microaggressions on campus. These students' ethnic identity, which lies in the heart of their social support system, has also become a hindrance in their queer identity development. Our findings challenge the perceived dichotomy between China as homophobic and ‘the West’ as queer‐friendly, and reveal the need for a more nuanced understanding of queer international students' experiences, in order to better support them in a higher education setting.

Analytical Study On Opportunities and Challenges for Empowerment of Rural Girls through Higher Education

Education is a fundamental right for every individual, regardless of gender. However, in India, girls have long been denied this right due to societal norms and prejudices. As the rapid development happened in the industrial sector also affecting on the education sector in terms of skilled manpower requirement. But the accessibility of the education is not easy for everyone, at the same time the higher education is still dream of the many girls in rural areas. Education plays a vital role in development of a country. Education is also significant in terms of the development of individual’s level of intellectual ability which in turn elevates chances of employability. 231 dropouts and 154 currently studying rural female students were considered for the study in the Prayagraj district’s rural areas. The study has revealed, that number institutions in the rural areas are comparatively less with urban area. In addition to this larger portion of the rural family have mindset in educating their children based on their genders. Most of the times male have been encouraged to pursue their education compared to female. The poor financial condition again playing a crucial role which restricts them to pursue their higher education in rural areas. Awareness about the opportunities from the higher education is comparatively less in the rural areas in parents and the potential candidates of the higher education. To reach education destination aren’t at acceptable condition in terms safety and frequency of the public transport vehicles. The present study focuses on challenges faced by rural girl students in the rural areas to pursue their higher education.

The concept of classroom management has been a topic of scientific research for a long period of time. It has been a common subject for teachers, teacher candidates, school administrators and students for decades. As the issue is a subbranch of managerial sciences as well as educational sciences, teachers are actually managers in classrooms. Being able to manage a classroom well acts as an assistant to the teacher in order to arrive at the final educational destination. In other words, if real learning and teaching are aimed, then classrooms need to be successfully managed for the benefit of all parties. In this review article, first the various definitions of classroom management appear from the literature. Then some research findings about the topic have been compiled as exemplary. It is hoped that both current teachers and future teachers will take this vital issue into consideration and master it during their careers.

The Role of Village-Owned Enterprises (Bumdes) in Managing Prime Educational Tourism Selemak, Hamparan Perak North Sumatera

Prima Wisata Edukasi Selemak is an educational destination that is very suitable to be used as a place to relax. Prima Wisata Edukasi Selemak is located on Ustad. H. Abdul Khadir Nuh, Kelumpang, Kec. Hamparan Perak, Kab. Deli Serdang, North Sumatra 20256. This study aims to determine the role of BUMDes in the governance of Prima Selemak Educational Tourism and to analyze the role of BUMDes in managing Selemak Educational Tourism, Hamparan Perak. To find out the government's contribution to BUMDes in increasing the management revenue of Prima Wisata Edukasi Selemak. This research uses qualitative methods obtained through visits to Prima Wisata Edukasi Selemak. It uses data collection methods through in-depth interview observations with BUMDes administrators or managers based on informants who are one of the BUMDes sections and are also of the village officials of Prima Wisata Edukasi Selemak. In general, this research can provide information related to BUMDes in the management of Selemak Village. Prima Wisata Edukasi Selemak is assisted by BUMDes in managing this tourism business so that the results are by the previously compiled process. BUMDes focuses on addressing this Village by providing services in the field of promotion in the introduction of these tourism businesses. The results of the discussion of this research are some of the roles of BUMDes in the governance and development of the Selemak Prima Edukasi Tourism Park, namely, as a driver and as a reference in bringing high multiplier effects to local communities, and also plays a role in the development, empowerment and development of the community in the Village. The government has yet to contribute to increasing revenue at Taman Wisata Edukasi Selemak. Still, in providing education to local communities, the government has taken part and promoted Taman Wisata Edukasi Selemak.

Impact of Economic Growth on International Student Enrollment: A Comparative Analysis of Chinese Mainland and Taiwan

This study conducts a comparative analysis of the impact of economic growth on international student enrollment in Chinese mainland and Taiwan. Through regression analysis, this study discovered a counterintuitive negative relationship between GDP growth rate and international student numbers in China, suggesting additional factors beyond economic indicators influence student attractiveness. Potential variables such as tuition costs, visa regulations, and perceptions of higher education quality warrant further exploration. In Taiwan, the absence of a significant correlation emphasizes the prominence of cultural, educational, and policy-related influences. These findings highlight the need for comprehensive policymaking encompassing economic indicators, academic quality, cultural inclusivity, and support structures. By understanding these complex factors, both Chinese mainland and Taiwan can shape their international education strategies effectively, creating nurturing environments that cater to diverse student cohorts. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of international student mobility dynamics and informs strategies to enhance the attractiveness of higher education destinations.

Inhabiting the peripheries: a Bourdieusian exploration of international students’ encounters in Kyrgyzstan

This research employs a qualitative lens to explore the multifarious hurdles international students face in underrepresented educational destinations, taking Kyrgyzstan as an exemplar. Leveraging Bourdieu’s theoretical insights, the study unearths nuanced personal, social, and academic adversities. Central to the study’s findings are the prevailing power imbalances, positioning international students at a disadvantage due to varying habitus and insufficient cultural capital. Notwithstanding these issues, these students exhibit determination and agency. The research underscores the urgency for more inclusive practices, curbing discrimination, rebalancing power structures, and fortifying student support mechanisms, providing policy directions for enhanced international student experiences in analogous settings.

Pintu Seribu Mosque Seen from Historical and Scientific Elements of the Concept of Lighting and Temperature

This research aims to evaluate the aspects of lighting and room temperature in the Thousand Gate Mosque, Banten, with a focus on its historical and scientific value. Using a descriptive method, room temperature and natural lighting, which affect the comfort of mosque users, were measured and monitored. The results revealed that the lighting and room temperature in the mosque do not meet the comfort standards set in Indonesia. As a solution, additional lighting such as lamps, air conditioning, or fans are needed to optimize the room temperature. Furthermore, through interviews and observations, it was found that the Thousand Gate Mosque holds historical significance, still recognized by the local community as a place of worship and a historical symbol due to its architecture. In conclusion, improving the evaluation of lighting and room temperature is necessary to enhance the comfort for mosque users. Additionally, promoting the mosque as a historical and educational destination is crucial to appreciate and utilize its historical value to the fullest. Thus, these efforts can preserve the authenticity of the mosque and provide greater benefits to the community and visitors

International Higher Education and Post-Study Work Rights in Australia, Germany and Canada: Strengths and Vulnerabilities

This article examines post-study work rights (PSWR) policy in three major international higher education destinations – Australia, Germany and Canada – through a comparative case study approach. The study found that PSWR policies typically have several objectives: to attract more international students; fill labour shortages; internationalise higher education, retain highly skilled migrants, and to improve outcomes for international graduates. Although some of these objectives appear to have been realised in each of the three countries, it remains unclear whether such policies have improved outcomes for international graduates.

What Drives International Students to Choose Australia as Their Tertiary Education Destination?

This systematic literature review synthesizes empirical evidence to comprehensively examine factors driving international students’ choice of Australia as their preferred destination for tertiary education. Deductive analysis of findings from the 46 selected studies, framed within the push and pull framework, identified 27 factors that revealed Australia’s distinctive attractiveness to international students. The results of this review reaffirmed the strengths of Australia’s environmental images in the international tertiary education market, highlighting that it could be a double-edged sword. The review discusses Australia’s attractiveness, especially after the COVID-19 crisis and suggests strategies to make the international education sector more sustainable. This review provides implications for policy, practice, and future research that are of importance to work towards enhancing Australia’s intake of international education. Additionally, it serves as a valuable resource for those seeking guidance on effectively attracting international students in the post-pandemic era.

International student mobility to non-traditional destination countries: evidence from a host country

Since the early 1990s, Latvia has experienced high levels of emigration. Still, current dynamics show that net migration has nearly ceased and that a growing share of new immigrant populations are from non-European countries. One of the leading causes of a sizable share of recent immigration is the globalisation of higher education and the mobility of international students. However, in recent decades, international student mobility (ISM) has brought attention to various aspects of higher education, educational export, and migration trends. This has captured the interest of academics and practitioners worldwide. Receiving countries recognise the importance of attracting international students as potential residents, especially as they undergo unfavourable demographic changes. The paper aims to present empirical evidence on ISM in Latvia by assessing international student daily life and study experiences. The focus is on examining the perspective of a host country. The study utilises statistical data, survey data and a case study of the University of Latvia to analyse the link between the origin of the student and their choosing Latvia as a non-traditional destination for quality higher education. The findings indicate that Latvia is an attractive destination for young migrants from diverse geographies, including Europe and Southeast Asia and consistent flows of students from former Soviet countries. One of the main factors that draw international students to Latvia is the affordability of education offered in English, providing a “second chance” for achieving success and specific clusters of degree students from European countries studying medicine.

Motivating Factors on Choosing Perth as the Choice Tourism Destination for Education

Motivation is the driving force that ensures the continuity of learning activities and provides direction for learning activities so that the desired goals can be fulfilled. Thus, motivation is very influential on one's learning outcomes. If someone does not have the motivation to learn, then that person will not achieve optimal learning results. The purpose of this study is to analyze how much motivation international students have in choosing Perth as a tourist destination for education. This study uses a survey method. Primary data collection was conducted by interviewing fifteen international students. All respondents answered ten closed questions. Data collected through questionnaires were analyzed qualitatively. The results of this survey state that Australia is one of the most popular countries so that Australia is one of the most visited countries from various parts of the world, especially to learn English and even to continue to a higher level of education. This is because Australia is the safest country, has a comfortable atmosphere, friendly people, and has a good transportation system that makes it easier for people to travel between states.

On the Perceptions of Russia as an Educational Destination by the Students at German University

Purpose. The purpose of the article was to explore how Russia is perceived as an educational destination among undergraduate (B. A.) and postgraduate (M. A.) students at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences (Kleve, Germany) during the summer semester 2022.Methods. The research was conceived as a reflective study based on the case-oriented research design and with a single case examined: the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences (Kleve, Germany) and its undergraduate (B. A.) and postgraduate (M. A.) students. To address the research question: “How is Russia being perceived as an educational destination by undergraduate (B.A) and postgraduate (M.A) students at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences in Germany?”, a mixed method was selected with archival and document-based research which was paired with a survey as a data collection technique; and a content analysis as a strategy for data analysis.results. Results of this survey have showed that 79% of respondents would like to visit Russia, but only 18% of respondents may consider Russia as a place to go studying (results are based on 33 replies out of 7390 students in total — the justification of small sampling is explained in the Methods part). Strikingly low interest to study in Russia was explained by 1) other educational destination preferences; 2) language barrier, and 3) lack of information on the Russian study programs and 4) insufficient financial support of studying in Russia. In addition, the survey results indicated that the negative perceptions of Russia as an educational destination could be related to the different values held by the students at the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, and those held by general population in Russia (as perceived by the students), but this would require further investigation.Conclusions. There are three major findings resulting from this study. Firstly, there is an inadequate attention in International Relations’ literature on the influence of international student mobility and change in students’ worldview and values. Secondly, higher education and international student mobility are considered as one of the instruments for value promotion and factors contributing to the soft power of the states. Thirdly, the results of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences case seem to confirm Sylvie Lomer’s hypothesis that students are already positively predisposed to the country where they intend to go studying.
