Examining Multi‐Sector Women‐Only Leadership Development Programmes: A Scoping Review of Recruitment Processes, Design and Instruction Methods, Content and Outcomes

ABSTRACTOrganisations are recognising that more needs to be done to support female talent. One response to this is women‐only leadership development programmes (WLDPs). To date, no scoping review has previously been conducted to examine the design and outcomes of these programmes. The purpose of the present review was therefore to bring together current knowledge of these interventions. In June 2022, a scoping review of the academic literature was performed using Business Source Premier (EBSCO), PsycINFO and SCOPUS, resulting in 13 articles meeting the inclusion criteria. Findings indicate encouraging signs that these programmes support women's development through incorporating intersectionality and positive psychology theories, as well as curricula on networking, conflict management and career planning. Whilst the specifics about the design and delivered content of these theories are unclear, their inclusion appears to lead participants in the reviewed WLDPs to report increased self‐awareness, clarity of purpose and enhanced feelings of authenticity. This review also raises questions regarding the rigour of the selection methods by which participants are given access to the programmes, and the transparent reporting of the design and delivery methodologies. Further, research directions and implications for both theory and practice are provided.

What Type of Self-Assessment Is Best for Your Educational Activity? A Review of Pre-Post, Now-Then, and Post-Only Designs.

In medical education, learner self-assessments are standard methods used to evaluate the impact of curricula and workshops. Due to the subjective nature of self-assessment, these measures are prone to known biases including framing, recall, social desirability, and response-shift bias. These biases can contribute to floor and ceiling effects of measurement, which can lead to false conclusions about whether the intended learning objectives were achieved. Ideal assessments of skills-based educational activities would include standardized tests and structured observations of learners demonstrating skill use before and after the educational intervention. However, educators often lack the necessary resources, time, and expertise to routinely conduct these appraisals and rely on self-assessment as a pragmatic approach to obtaining curriculum feedback and evaluation data. In this review, we describe three common designs for self-assessments: the pre-post, now-then, and post-only designs. We then give recommendations for choosing between each design to minimize bias. The choice of the best design is based on alignments with four considerations: (1) the educational objectives (e.g., demonstrate skill competency and/or change in skill level); (2) participants' prior experience and shared understanding of levels of skill performance; (3) the nature of the educational activity; and (4) available resources. For each design, we review strengths, weaknesses, and known biases and discuss examples to highlight trade-offs between options. We also discuss the use of control groups and follow-up surveys to measure retention over time as additional methods to address bias and related confounding. The guidance presented here is intended to raise educators' awareness of common pitfalls in self-assessment; minimize the impact of known biases when possible; provide evidence, examples, and rationales for optimal design choices; and increase the rigor of self-assessment evaluations.

Design, justification, and prototyping of the visible and infrared wide angle viewing system diagnostic for ITER equatorial port 12.

The ITER equatorial visible and infrared Wide Angle Viewing System (WAVS) will play a major role in the protection of plasma facing components by providing surface temperature measurements of these components. It will also image the plasma emission in the visible range. The WAVS is composed of 15 lines of sight located in four Equatorial Ports (EPs) 3, 9, 12, and 17. Its development is being carried out by the Consortium constituted by CEA, CIEMAT, INTA, and Bertin Technologies, within grant contracts financed by F4E. In the EP12, the in-vessel and ex-vessel components of the WAVS are at their final design phase. This article presents an overview of the opto-mechanical design of the WAVS in the EP12 presented at the final design review.

Active Vibration Control Performance Comparison Based on Middle Pedestal Stiffness Using a Mobility Model and the Narrowband Fx-LMS Technique

Vibrations generated from equipment mounted on ships radiate into the water and affect covert operation capabilities. Accordingly, various studies are being conducted to reduce vibration transmitted from mounted equipment. In this study, a system consisting of mounting equipment, a 3-axis active mount, a middle pedestal, and a lower mount of the middle pedestal was modeled using a finite element analysis program, and a mobility model was constructed by calculating the frequency response function between the positions required for analysis. The error signal (primary path) obtained using the mobility model and the response at the operating point by the control force of the actuator (secondary path) are applied to the narrowband Fx-LMS algorithm for vibration control, and the control performance was compared. Through coupling analysis of the middle pedestal, the control influence according to the rigidity of the middle pedestal was analyzed. As a result of the control simulation, the time required for vibration control was controlled approximately 6 times faster in the model, with increased stiffness of the middle pedestal, and the vibration reduction performance was predicted to improve by a minimum of 0.9 dB and a maximum of 13.3 dB. Through this study, a simulation model that can provide a guide for the design of the middle pedestal of a ship was obtained, and it is expected that it can be utilized for a preliminary design review before manufacturing the middle pedestal of a ship.

A Review of Seismic Optimization Design of Building Structures with Uniform Response

Earthquakes threaten human survival with powerful destructive power, and the performance of buildings in earthquakes is crucial. The seismic design of traditional building structures has the limitations of non-uniform response to displacement and acceleration, which can easily lead to partial damage to the building, unreasonable structure and difficulty in post-earthquake repair, which seriously affects the comfort and safety of the building. It is emphasized that improving the seismic safety of buildings is not only an inevitable requirement to ensure the safety of people's lives, but also to meet people's needs for continuous improvement of building comfort. The review shows that it is of great practical significance to study the seismic optimization design method of building structures with uniform response, which provides an important reference direction for the future design of building structures.

A Review of the Biomimetic Structural Design of Sandwich Composite Materials.

Sandwich composites are widely used in engineering due to their excellent mechanical properties. Accordingly, the problem of interface bonding between their panels and core layers has always been a hot research topic. The emergence of biomimetic technology has enabled the integration of the structure and function of biological materials from living organisms or nature into the design of sandwich composites, greatly improving the interface bonding and overall performance of heterogeneous materials. In this paper, we review the most commonly used biomimetic structures and the fusion design of multi-biomimetic structures in the engineering field. They are analyzed with respect to their mechanical properties, and several biomimetic structures derived from abstraction in plants and animals are highlighted. Their structural advantages are further discussed specifically. Regarding the optimization of different interface combinations of multilayer composites, this paper explores the optimization of simulations and the contributions of molecular dynamics, machine learning, and other techniques used for optimization. Additionally, the latest molding methods for sandwich composites based on biomimetic structural design are introduced, and the materials applicable to different processes, as well as their advantages and disadvantages, are briefly analyzed. Our research results can help improve the mechanical properties of sandwich composites and promote the application of biomimetic structures in engineering.

Red blood cell alloimmunization in transfused patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia: A single centre retrospective study

BackgroundHereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a genetic blood vessel disorder which may lead to chronic bleeding and red blood cell (RBC) transfusions. Data on transfusion requirements and complications in HHT patients are sparse. Study Design and MethodsRetrospective chart review was conducted at St. Michael’s Hospital (SMH) in Toronto, Canada. All adults with a definite clinical diagnosis of HHT AND inpatient hospital visits between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2020 AND had undergone transfusion compatibility testing at SMH, were identified. Data were abstracted from electronic medical records. Simple descriptive statistics were used to analyze data. Institutional Research Ethics Board approval was obtained. Results63 HHT patients underwent compatibility testing and were subsequently transfused at SMH. Median patient age at data abstraction was 70 years (Interquartile Range [IQR]: 18) and 35 (56 %) were female. RBC alloantibodies were found in 23 transfused patients (36.5 %) and were predominantly directed against Rh and Kell antigens: Anti-E (65 %), Anti-K (39 %) and Anti-c (22 %) were most common. Excluding an outlier who received 611 RBC units during the study period, the mean number of RBC units transfused per HHT patient at SMH was 22.1 units (Standard Deviation: 40.9, IQR: 17). Six (9.5 %) transfused patients experienced at least one transfusion reaction. ConclusionRBC alloimmunization rate was 36.5 % in our cohort of transfused HHT patients; this is much higher than described in the general population and another transfused HHT cohort. The most commonly observed alloantibodies were Rh and Kell, supporting our policy of prophylactic phenotypic matching for these antigens for all transfused patients with HHT.

The Institutionalisation of Power-Sharing in Zanzibar: Strengths and Challenges

Abstract In 2010, Zanzibar presented a distinctive example of power-sharing in Africa. The introduction of power-sharing governance system was preceded by a referendum, which set the stage for a subsequent constitutional amendment to facilitate this governance approach on the Island. This model was adopted to address the region’s longstanding and entrenched political issues. Despite the strong base of its adoption, power sharing has shown ups and downs throughout its life, passing through the boycott from 2015 to 2020 and the 2020 electoral violence. This study examines the strengths and challenges of power-sharing in Zanzibar, focusing on its potential path for its institutionalization. The study used a qualitative research design, with interviews and documentary reviews as data collection methods. The findings indicate that while power-sharing in Zanzibar benefits from robust public support, which complicates efforts to eliminate or alter it, the system encounters various institutional and behavioral challenges that impede its full institutionalization.

In the work to replace the Big Wailola Bridge, several problems were encountered, including changes in the height of the planned and actual abutments. The planned abutment height is 7.20 M high and the realized height is 8.80 M. However, the changes (Design Review) do not change the structure of the pile foundation. And also from the boring results at the location it is known that at a depth of 36 M the SPT only shows the number 32, namely clay soil so that the bearing strength of the pile is determined from the frictional resistance between the pile wall and the surrounding soil (Fraction pile).

Design and Justice: A Scoping Review in Engineering Design

Abstract Our society faces complex social justice challenges, often exacerbated by existing engineered products and technologies. To avoid unintentionally contributing to social justice, engineering designers play a critical role in creating and studying products and technologies that can aim to address challenges of social injustice. There is a growing priority in the engineering design research community to incorporate justice into design and to do so meaningfully and intentionally. Therefore, there is a need to more deeply understand how scholars have integrated concepts of justice into design and to bring to light areas of future research. In this paper, we conduct a scoping review of design and justice in twelve scholarly venues relevant to the engineering design community. A scoping review allowed for a broad range of topics to be covered to identify major research themes and gaps, and to explore boundaries of the nascent study of design and justice. After searching the relevant venues, we conducted a thematic analysis to capture the major themes in the dataset of papers relating to justice and design. Along with relevant terminology used, we found that scholars connected justice to design in ways that we categorized into three main areas of design: Designers, Design Outcomes, and Design Process. Our analysis highlighted areas of future research in studying justice as relevant to Designers, Outcomes, and Processes, as well as identifying an overall call to redefine the field of design in the pursuit of justice.

Robotic Button Mushroom Harvesting Systems: A Review of Design, Mechanism, and Future Directions

The global demand for button mushrooms has surged in recent years, driven by their health benefits, creating a significant challenge for the mushroom industry in meeting this increasing demand. The increasing reliance on human labor, which is becoming unsustainable due to labor shortages and rising wage costs, highlights the urgent need for automated harvesting solutions. This review examines the integration of automated systems in button mushroom harvesting, delving into the key components such as robots, mechanisms, machine elements, programming, and algorithms. It offers a thorough analysis of the performance, design, operational mechanisms, and advantages and limitations of robotic systems, comparing the different methods employed in automated harvesting. This paper compares the performance of all the mushroom harvesters, including the commercially available ones with manual harvesting, and identifies their potential and limitations. The commercial harvesters are shown to pick 2000 mushrooms per hour on average, which is similar to how much a skilled worker picks at the same time. However, commercial automation harvesting has a relatively low success rate, high initial cost, high operating cost, and energy consumption, identifying areas for future research and challenges. This paper serves as a valuable resource for researchers and industry professionals striving to advance automated harvesting technology and improve its efficiency in meeting the rising demand for button mushrooms.

Economic Burden of Community-Acquired Antibiotic-Resistant Urinary Tract Infections: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Antibiotic resistance (ABR) poses a major burden to global health and economic systems. ABR in community-acquired urinary tract infections (CA-UTIs) has become increasingly prevalent. Accurate estimates of ABR's clinical and economic burden are needed to support medical resource prioritization and cost-effectiveness evaluations of urinary tract infection (UTI) interventions. This study aims to systematically synthesize the evidence on the economic costs associated with ABR in CA-UTIs, using published studies comparing the costs of antibiotic-susceptible and antibiotic-resistant cases. We searched the PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE and Embase, Cochrane Review Library, and Scopus databases. Studies published in English from January 1, 2008, to January 31, 2023, reporting the economic costs of ABR in CA-UTI of any microbe were included. Independent screening of titles/abstracts and full texts was performed based on prespecified criteria. A quality assessment was performed using the Integrated Quality Criteria for Review of Multiple Study Designs (ICROMS) tool. Data in UTI diagnosis criteria, patient characteristics, perspectives, resource costs, and patient and health economic outcomes, including mortality, hospital length of stay (LOS), and costs, were extracted and analyzed. Monetary costs were converted into 2023 US dollars. This review included 15 studies with a total of 57,251 CA-UTI cases. All studies were from high- or upper-middle-income countries. A total of 14 (93%) studies took a health system perspective, 13 (87%) focused on hospitalized patients, and 14 (93%) reported UTI pathogens. Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are the most prevalent organisms. A total of 12 (80%) studies reported mortality, of which, 7 reported increased mortality in the ABR group. Random effects meta-analyses estimated an odds ratio of 1.50 (95% CI 1.29-1.74) in the ABR CA-UTI cases. All 13 hospital-based studies reported LOS, of which, 11 reported significantly higher LOS in the ABR group. The meta-analysis of the reported median LOS estimated a pooled excess LOS ranging from 1.50 days (95% CI 0.71-4.00) to 2.00 days (95% CI 0.85-3.15). The meta-analysis of the reported mean LOS estimated a pooled excess LOS of 2.45 days (95% CI 0.51-4.39). A total of 8 (53%) studies reported costs in monetary terms-none discounted the costs. All 8 studies reported higher medical costs spent treating patients with ABR CA-UTI in hospitals. The highest excess cost was observed in UTIs caused by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales. No meta-analysis was performed for monetary costs due to heterogeneity. ABR was attributed to increased mortality, hospital LOS, and economic costs among patients with CA-UTI. The findings of this review highlighted the scarcity of research in this area, particularly in patient morbidity and chronic sequelae and costs incurred in community health care. Future research calls for a cost-of-illness analysis of infections, standardizing therapy-pathogen combination comparators, medical resources, productivity loss, intangible costs to be captured, and data from community sectors and low-resource settings and countries.

Understanding the landscape and promoting the use of guides for real-world study: a scoping review

ObjectivesTo provide an overview of the existing guides for real-world study (RWS). Study Design and SettingScoping review: a systematic and snowball search of PubMed, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wan Fang, and nine other official websites was conducted to identify guides for RWS published between January 1, 1990, and December 31, 2023. Two reviewers independently screened and extracted the data using a predefined form. Descriptive, quantitative, and qualitative summaries were also obtained. ResultsA total of 61 guides from PubMed (26, 42.6%), CNKI (9, 14.8%), and other websites (26, 42.6%) were included. Of these, 20 guides (32.8%) were developed through international collaboration, and 49 (80.3%) were published after 2016. Fifty-three (86.9%), 6 (9.8%), and 4 (6.6%) were methodological guides, reporting guidelines, and evaluation tools, respectively. These guides addressed observational studies (24, 39.3%), interventional studies (5, 8.2%), or both (22, 36.1%) that covered design (46, 75.4%), conduct (24, 39.3%), analysis (15, 24.6%), reporting (13, 21.3%), and evaluation (3, 4.9%). Only ten guides (16.4%) used both evidence-based and consensus-driven methods in their development. ConclusionExisting RWS guides vary significantly in purpose, format, and content and are often tailored to specific contexts. However, improved guide development methods remain to be established. Researchers should carefully assess the scope, classification, and applicability of these guides, particularly at the beginning of the study, to ensure that they meet the needs of their specific research objectives.

Communicating blood test results in primary care: a mixed methods systematic review.

Background Test result communication is important for patient-centred care, patient safety and primary care workload. Evidence is needed to ensure that test results are communicated safely and efficiently to patients in primary care. Aim To summarize existing evidence for blood test result communication between primary care providers and their patients and carers. Design and setting Mixed-methods systematic review Methods Medline, Embase, PsycINFO (Ovid); CINAHL (ESCOHost); and the Cochrane Library were searched from 2013 to September 2023. Primary studies of any design that provided information on the communication of blood test results by primary care staff to adult patients and carers were eligible for inclusion. Results There were 71 included studies, including 10 experimental studies and no randomized controlled trials. Study quality was mostly poor and risk of bias was high, partly due to a lack of reported information. Patients want more information about their blood test results, particularly in terms of 'what next', and prefer results to be provided quickly. Electronic methods such as online access or text messages were generally well accepted but not by everyone, and not for all results. Clinicians' opinions were mixed as to whether more information and direct release of test results to patients without clinician input was beneficial or could cause problems, such as increased workload. Conclusions We have identified a range of evidence on patient and clinician preferences, barriers and facilitators to test communication, which is particularly important in the current NHS context of a move towards patient online access.

A Design Review for Biomedical Wireless Power Transfer Systems with a Three-Coil Inductive Link through a Case Study for NICU Applications

This paper outlines a design approach for biomedical wireless power transfer systems with a focus on three-coil inductive links for neonatal intensive care unit applications. The relevant literature has been explored to support the design approach, equations, simulation results, and the process of experimental analysis. The paper begins with a brief overview of various power amplifier classes, followed by an in-depth examination of the most common power amplifiers used in biomedical wireless power transfer systems. Among the traditional linear and switching amplifier classes, class-D and class-E switching amplifiers are highlighted for their enhanced efficiency and straightforward implementation in biomedical contexts. The impact of load variation on these systems is also discussed. This paper then explores the basic concepts and essential equations governing inductive links, comparing two-coil and multi-coil configurations. In the following, the paper discusses foundational coil parameters and provides theoretical and experimental analysis of both two-coil and multi-coil inductive links through step-by-step measurement techniques using lab equipment and addressing the relevant challenges. Finally, a case study for neonatal intensive care unit applications is presented, showcasing a wireless power transfer system operating at 13.56 MHz for powering a wearable device on a patient lying on a mattress. An inductive link with a transmitter coil embedded in a mattress is designed to supply power to a load at distances ranging from 4 cm to 12 cm, simulating the mattress-to-chest distance of an infant. the experimental results of a three-coil inductive link equipped with a Class-E power amplifier are reported, demonstrating power transfer efficiency ranging from 75% to 25% and power delivery to a 500 Ω-load varying from 340 mW to 25 mW over various distances.

Promotion and Tenure Database Creation and Utilization: A 12-Year History.

Trends in faculty demographic composition, promotion success, and retention are important considerations in Academic Health Centers (AHC). This paper reviews the design, implementation, and utility of a faculty promotion and tenure (P&T) database (PROMO/TE©) over 12years in a large southwestern academic health center. Review of the system design, portfolio creation, P&T tracking, interface with other faculty databases, and lessons learned will be offered. PROMO/TE© was developed to improve the P&T packet creation, application, and review process in one College and was expanded to other colleges at the AHC. The PROMO/TE© system is integrated with Workday® and FACFACTS© to track trends in recruitment, attrition, and P&T trends across gender, underrepresented minorities, and other subgroups. PROMO/TE© has several advantages including improving communication, transparency, uniformity, and efficiency in the P&T packet creation, application, and review process. Increased cost savings ($217,198 annually) were noted with elimination of hard copy packets and decreased time spent. The first college reviewed 743 dossiers in the PROMO/TE© system since its creation in 2012 and there has been on average a 10% increase in P&T approvals since its inception. PROMO/TE© facilitates and tracks trends in the P&T process and has many benefits as well as significant cost savings. PROMO/TE© serves as a potential model for other institutions.

Review of Innovative Cavity Designs in Metal–Insulator-Metal Waveguide-Based Plasmonic Sensors

AbstractPlasmonic sensors utilizing metal–insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides represent a significant advancement in sensing technology due to their high sensitivity and versatility. These sensors leverage surface plasmon polaritons to detect minute changes in the surrounding environment, making them highly effective for a range of applications. For instance, they can precisely measure variations in the Refractive Index, which is crucial for monitoring chemical concentrations and biological interactions. Additionally, MIM waveguides can be adapted to sense temperature fluctuations, pressure changes, and the presence of specific gases, providing valuable insights in fields such as environmental surveillance, medical diagnostics, and industrial processes. In recent years, a variety of sensor cavity shapes have been proposed to enhance sensor performance. This review examines how these innovative geometries optimize sensor cavities to achieve unprecedented levels of resolution and sensitivity, underscoring their transformative potential across a broad spectrum of scientific and practical applications.

A review of structural diversity design and optimization for lattice metamaterials

Metamaterials are a type of groundbreaking engineered materials with unique properties not found in natural substances.
