Research on Power Transmission Tower Planning Method Based on Real Terrain and Surface Feature

With the rapid development of power grid construction in China, the engineering construction conditions of overhead lines have changed. Further research is needed on the combination scheme of general design technical conditions of lines, tower planning, and design, etc., to meet the application requirements of the actual line projects in China for the general design of transmission line towers. This research adopts the pole and tower planning method that conforms to the real terrain and terrain conditions and considers the actual constraint information, such as the terrain, crossing trees, power lines, and railways, to carry out the planning and design of transmission line poles and towers.

Modeling of Positive Switching Impulse Discharge of UHV Transmission Line Air Gaps

Positive switching impulse discharge characteristics are an important basis for the external insulation design of transmission line towers. At present, the characteristics are obtained mainly by real tower discharge tests. Since the existing research on the discharge model is not perfect, test designs are not reasonable, which results in high costs. The influence of line height and tower width on the discharge characteristics of Ultra High Voltage (UHV) transmission lines air gaps is studied in this paper. The results show that the line height had little influence on the breakdown voltage of air gaps in UHV transmission lines. A tower-width discharge model was obtained by fitting the breakdown voltage of air gaps with different gap lengths and tower widths. By analyzing the gap characteristic factors of different transmission lines, a discharge model of different tower air gaps in UHV transmission lines was presented. The breakdown voltage calculated by the models was in good agreement with the test results, and the errors were not more than 5%.

Optimum designs for transmission line towers

A method for the development of optimized tower designs for extra high-voltage transmission lines is presented in this paper. The optimization is with reference to both tower weight and geometry. It is achieved by the control of a chosen set of key design parameters. Fuzziness in the definition of these control variables is also included in the design process. A derivative-free method of nonlinear optimization is incorporated in the program, specially developed for the configuration, analysis and design of transmission line towers. A few interesting results of both crisp and fuzzy optimization, relevant to the design of a typical double circuit transmission line tower under multiple loading conditions, are presented.

Reliability-based optimization of transmission line towers

Transmission line towers form the major part of a power grid and contribute a large percentage to the total cost of the transmission line network. The structural design of a transmission line tower is most often governed by IS:802—1977, IS:802 (draft)—1989 (Indian standard code for design of transmission line towers) and Indian electricity rules. There have been failures reported in transmission line towers, particularly in Andhra Pradesh, a southern state of India, due to cyclonic storms. Against this background of codal specifications not properly taking into account the uncertainty factors in loading and material properties, the need for reliability-based design is highlighted in the present paper. Four independent computer programs for component reliability, reliability analysis, optimization and automation of failure mode generation were developed. Not only were these programs independently developed and validated, they were all linked together. This has enabled not only the more economical design of typical towers but also ensured a particular level of chosen reliability for the towers. It has also been demonstrated that the program can be used for checking the existing towers for assessing the reliability levels available in them.

Economical Design of Transmission Line Tower Using a Digital Computer

In this paper an attempt has been made to bring the use of the digital computer for economically designing the transmission line towers. A computer programme has been developed in Fortan-IV for IBM 360/44 Computer. The programme assumes a mathematical model of the tower outline and modifies for economy. The data required includes the tower loadings (including the factor of safety) and the available steel section particulars for the design.The programme automatically varies the tower pattern and finally selects the most economical one and prints out the results of complete design.
