Research and Analysis of Shear Connector in Prestressed Concrete Box-Girder with Corrugated Steel Webs

The prestressed concrete box-girder with corrugated steel webs is a new type of steel-concrete composite structure. It has some advantages comparing with traditional prestressed concrete structure. Shear connector is a decisive component with which steel and concrete can work together in steel-concrete composite structure. In this paper, the most commonly used forms of shear connector in prestressed concrete composite girder with corrugated steel webs are introduced. The method of design and calculation of shear connector is described. Furthermore, the engineering design case of shear connector in the 4th Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge North Terminal Chuhe Bridge is presented. The method can be taken as a reference to the design of shear connector in the same kind bridge.

Reliability assessment of composite beams

Composite steel–concrete flexural members have become increasingly popular in the design and construction of floor systems, structural frames, and bridges. Constant research advances have resulted in numerous enhancements and changes to the American design practice, as embodied in the composite construction provisions of AISC Specification. This paper presents results of a comprehensive reliability study of composite beams. The study considers Specification changes since the 1976 reliability study by Galambos and Ravindra, considers a larger database of experimental data, and evaluates recent proposals for changes in the design of shear connectors. A comparison of three different design methods is presented based on 15,064 composite beam cases. A method to consider the effect of the degree of shear connection on the strength reduction factor is proposed.

Recommendations for Shear Connector Design and Detailing for Interior and Exterior Secondary Composite Beams

This paper reviews international practice for the design of shear connectors for secondary beams and highlights the lack of consistency in the various clauses accounting for stud location, stud pairs compared to single studs, and for exterior edge beam detailing for hollow composite slabs. Five push-off test specimens were constructed to evaluate the effect of stud location and grouping in interior beams. An additional five specimens were tested to compare failure modes in edge beams with alternative detailing. The results demonstrated a 24% difference attributed to stud location and a clear adverse interaction between stud pairs. A simple detail is proposed for exterior composite edge beam construction.

Tests of composite beams with cold-formed sections

Use of cold-formed sections as composite beams in slab systems offers high flexibility in design and several advantages. Among these advantages are the enabling of shallow overall slab depth, easy adaptation to irregular geometries, freedom in design of cross-sections and ready availability of materials and sections. The main problem in implementation of the designs is ensuring adequate shear transfer between the concrete slab and the cold-formed beam section, whose thickness is often too small for welding of conventional shear studs. The paper presents designs and test results for several technologies involving cold-formed sections in composite construction, including self-drilling screwed cold-formed shear connectors, and built-up sections bolted to precast concrete planks. The tests include extensive push-out tests of numerous types of connectors, as well as full-scale composite element tests. Results indicate that design of shear connectors can in most cases be conservatively based on codes of practice for the design of cold-formed connections. Full-scale tests indicate high ductility and capacity which exceeds design assumptions.

This paper reports on the behavior of headed shear stud connectors for use in steel frames with partially restrained connections and reinforced concrete infill walls, attached compositely to the steel frame around the perimeter of each wall panel (S-RCW system), subjected to seismic loading. In infill walls, the shear connectors lie in the plane of the concrete panel, which results in different behavior from studs in composite beams, for which the majority of past research has been conducted. In particular, shear connectors in infill walls are subjected to axial tension and compression forces due to sidesway and overturning of the S-RCW system, are influenced by the parallel edges of the wall, and are subjected to cyclic forces.An experimental program was developed to quantify the strength and deformation capacities of shear studs for use in S-RCW infill systems addressing the above issues, and to verify existing AISC, PCI, ACI, and Japanese design equations. A modification of the classic push-out test setup was made to accommodate the application of cyclic shear loading and axial tensile loading. Two different steel reinforcement configurations were used, one providing little confining reinforcement around the shear studs, and the other utilizing a steel reinforcement cage to provide ample confinement to the shear stud.

Shear Connector Design for Composite Flexural Members

Composite flexural members with vertical laminations are sometimes loaded in such a manner that individual components of the composite member tend to deflect unevenly. A simple procedure is presented for determining the longitudinal spacing of shear connectors that ensures uniform deflection of vertically laminated composite flexural members. The so-called ``deflection compatibility shear connectors'' are designed to provide a uniform load that opposes uneven deflection assuming the conservative case where total design loads are placed on the most flexible component of the composite member.

STEEL-CONCRETE COMPOSITE PLATES WITH FLEXIBLES SHEAR CONNECTORS.

The paper examines the elastic behaviour of composite plates in which flexible shear connexion leads to partial interaction of the constituent layers. Analyses are presented for plates of two shapes subjected to concentrated transverse loads from vehicle wheels and curves of interface shear stress are plotted. The theoretical predictions are compared with results from a model test and their implications for the design of shear connectors against fatigue are considered. /Author/
