Peningkatan Estetika Kawasan Kampung Ketupat Samarinda Melalui Desain Sculpture

Kampung Ketupat, located in the District of Samarinda Seberang - Samarinda, has been a tourist destination since 2017. Kampung Ketupat is one of the old villages in Samarinda located along the Mahakam River, consisting of stilt houses made from ironwood. Many of its residents are artisans who make 'ketupat' (woven palm leaf pouches for rice) containers sold in Samarinda and the surrounding areas. As time passes, facilities such as sculptures in Kampung Ketupat gradually become obsolete both in terms of appearance and materials. Based on these problems, the Building Architecture Study Program - Samarinda State Polytechnic, through Community Service activities, provided a solution to the problem with the Kampung Ketupat sculpture design approach, which is more in line with the needs of the tourist area. The implementation method is direct observation in the field, the study of related literature, interviews with local community groups and communities, and design activities. The result of the activity is a complete working drawing that can be used as a reference in making new sculptures by the management of Kampung Ketupat. Apart from the sculpture's proportions being more monumental, the update includes a more modern and Instagrammable design form and lighting on several sides. The working drawings can be an important input for plans to improve the aesthetics of the Kampung Ketupat area.

Passive Cooling in Indonesian Traditional Dwellings and Its Relationship with Geographical Location

As efforts to maximize passive cooling for building cooling are growing, attention to traditional architecture is also increasing. Traditional houses have the potential to provide a variety of passive cooling solutions needed as a solution to the environmental impact of active cooling on urban heat islands and global warming. Indonesia is a country with huge cultural diversity. Each region has traditional houses that are proud and cared for. Despite the growing importance of traditional houses as a source of passive cooling design, the number of studies exploring passive cooling in traditional houses in Indonesia and its relationship with location is still very limited. This paper aims to provide an overview of passive cooling in traditional houses in Indonesia and its relationship with location based on peer-reviewed international scientific literature using a systematic literature review. The results reveal that most of the studies still do not optimally explore the passive cooling aspect of traditional houses. Few studies explicitly link passive cooling design to the location of the house. This research identifies several future research directions and offers several applications of passive cooling of traditional houses in modern designs.

2022 Düzce, Türkiye earthquake: advances in the past 2 decades, lessons learned, and future projections

In the year 1999, two devastating earthquakes (Mw 7.4 Kocaeli earthquake in August and Mw 7.2 Düzce earthquake in November) occurred in Northwest Türkiye. These two earthquakes led to a very large number of casualties and building collapses. When the 1999 earthquakes occurred, most of the structures in the earthquake-impacted region were not designed according to modern seismic design codes. During the 25 years following those earthquakes, there have been significant advances in building construction in the light of earthquake engineering, including adequate seismic codes, new regulations, and effective code enforcement in the earthquake impacted region. These advances have been reflected in the construction of new structures in the region and the retrofitting of existing ones. As a result, 70–80% of the current building stock in Düzce was designed, constructed, or retrofitted after the 1999 earthquakes. Almost 23 years later, in 2022, an Mw 6.1 earthquake occurred in Düzce, with ground shaking close to the seismic design code life safety performance level. The 2022 earthquake provided a great opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness and consequences of the advances in earthquake engineering and the relevant policy-making and regulations. This paper provides a comparative overview of the 1999 and 2022 earthquakes that struck the city of Düzce in terms of hazard, vulnerability, and consequences. Furthermore, other key lessons learned from the 2022 Düzce earthquake are documented based on field reconnaissance and numerical simulations. The lessons learned are expected to provide useful guidance for the reconstruction efforts after the 2023 Kahramanmaraş Türkiye earthquake sequence or in similar efforts in other parts of the world.

Is there an increased revision rate due to early tibial component loosening with a modern total knee arthroplasty design? A retrospective analysis from a large volume arthroplasty centre

BackgroundThe Attune TKR was introduced in 2011 as a successor to its predicate design The PFC Sigma. However, following reports of early failures, there are ongoing concerns related to increased loosening rates. Given the concerns, this study aimed to compare revision rates of the Attune implant to an established predicate, and other implant designs used in a high-volume arthroplasty center.MethodsWe identified 10,202 patients who underwent primary cemented TKR at our institution with a minimum of 1 year follow-up, involving 2406 Attune TKR (557 S +), 4642 PFC TKR, 3154 other designs. Primary outcomes were revision for all-causes, aseptic loosening of any component, and aseptic tibial loosening. Kaplan–Meier survival and Cox regression models were used to compare groups. Matched cohorts were selected for radiographic analysis.Results308 knees were revised. The Attune cohort had the lowest risk of revision, with a rate of 2.98 per 1000 implant-years while the PFC and All Other Implant groups had a rate of 3.15 and 4.4 respectively. Aseptic loosing was the most common cause for revision, with 76% (65/88) involving the tibia. Survival analysis showed no significant differences between the Attune and other cohorts. Radiolucent lines were detected in 7.1% of the Attune S + group, 6.8% of the standard Attune group, and 6.3% of the PFC group, with no significant differences found between them.ConclusionThis study represents the largest non-registry review of the Attune TKR in comparison to a predicate and other designs. There was no significant increased revision rate for all-cause revision or aseptic loosening, or peri-implant radiolucencies. It appears that increased loosening may not be as concerning as originally thought.Level of EvidenceLevel III.

A Review on Design and Mechanical Properties of Additively Manufactured NiTi Implants for Orthopedic Applications.

NiTi alloy has a wide range of applications as a biomaterial due to its high ductility, low corrosion rate, and favorable biocompatibility. Although Young’s modulus of NiTi is relatively low, it still needs to be reduced; one of the promising ways is by introducing porous structure. Traditional manufacturing processes, such as casting, can hardly produce complex porous structures. Additive manufacturing (AM) is one of the most advanced manufacturing technologies that can solve impurity issues, and selective laser melting (SLM) is one of the well-known methods. This paper reviews the developments of AM-NiTi with a particular focus on SLM-NiTi utilization in biomedical applications. Correspondingly, this paper aims to describe the three key factors, including powder preparation, processing parameters, and gas atmosphere during the overall process of porous NiTi. The porous structure design is of vital importance, so the unit cell and pore parameters are discussed. The mechanical properties of SLM-NiTi, such as hardness, compressive strength, tensile strength, fatigue behavior, and damping properties and their relationship with design parameters are summarized. In the end, it points out the current challenges. Considering the increasing application of NiTi implants, this review paper may open new frontiers for advanced and modern designs.

Numerical Prediction of Ride Comfort of Tracked Vehicle Equipped with Novel Flexible Road Wheels

Enhancing ride comfort has always constituted a crucial focus in the design and research of modern tracked vehicles, heavily reliant on the driving system’s performance. While the road wheel is a key component of the driving system, traditional road wheels predominantly adopt a solid structure, exhibiting subpar adhesion performance and damping effects, thereby falling short of meeting the demands for high-speed, stable, and long-distance driving in tracked vehicles. Addressing this issue, this paper proposes a novel type of flexible road wheel (FRW) characterized by a catenary construction. The study investigates the ride comfort of tracked vehicles equipped with flexible road wheels by integrating finite element and vehicle dynamic. First, three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) models of both flexible and rigid road wheels are established, considering material and contact nonlinearities. These models are validated through a wheel radial loading test. Based on the validated FE model, the paper uncovers the relationship between load and radial deformation of the road wheel, forming the basis for a nonlinear mathematical model. Subsequently, a half-car model of a tracked vehicle with seven degrees of freedom is established using Newton’s second law. A random road model, considering the track effect and employing white noise, is constructed. The study concludes by examining the ride comfort of tracked vehicles equipped with flexible and rigid road wheels under various speeds and road grades. The results demonstrate that, in comparison to the rigid road wheel (RRW), the flexible road wheel enhances the ride comfort of tracked vehicles on randomly uneven roads. This research provides a theoretical foundation for the implementation of flexible road wheels in tracked vehicles.

3D Construction Printing as a Tool for Forming the Design Methodology of an Actual Modern Object of Architecture and Construction

An analysis of the experience of the design and construction of objects of modern architecture, reflecting in an aesthetic image, a high -tech direction and brightness of the image. In particular, the features of 3D construction printing with a variety of approaches and purposes of using this technology in the field of architecture are considered.The purpose of the research and analysis is to bring the theory of technological capabilities, their practical application and the relevance of modern architectural solutions into design methods, on the basis of which it is possible to form general trends and directions of aesthetic images of modern architecture.The article presents an approach to the design of a residential housing facility based on the analyzed experience and selected methods of architectural design, taking into account their subsequent implementation by 3D construction printing.

Features of the Architecture of Modern Residential Buildings in the City of Vladimir

For the first time, an analytical review of examples of the inclusion of new residential buildings in different time periods from the 1930s to the first quarter of the XXI century in the development of the city of Vladimir is given. One of the most important tasks of modern architecture is to find a practical solution to the theoretical problem of the interaction of tradition and innovation. The study of this problem on the example of historical cities in Russia occupies a special place in the theory of architecture, since a valuable historical and architectural environment needs a delicate approach when integrating new objects into it. The valuable historical buildings of the city of Vladimir mostly consist of stone houses built in the classicism style of the XVIII–XIX centuries, which formed the image of the historical center. However, not only the conscious appeal of architects to historical examples of local architecture served to reflect classicism in the appearance of buildings of subsequent eras, but also political and socio-economic aspects. The peculiarities of environmental adaptation techniques used in the construction of residential buildings by Soviet and Russian architects are noted.

THE INFLUENCE OF CULTURE AND HERITAGE ON ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

This article delves into the relationship between cultural heritage, architecture, and cultural narratives, looking at how physical environments reflect and shape social practices, historical traditions, and cultural practices. The study emphasizes how architects integrate indigenous materials, cultural symbols, and historical allusions into their designs by comparing and contrasting diverse architectural styles and movements across different areas and eras. A hybrid architectural language incorporating multiple cultural aspects is also addressed in the article, delving into the impact of globalization in this regard. Modern design approaches emphasize cultural sustainability and heritage protection, as seen in case studies from the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia, demonstrating the interconnected nature of culture, history, and architecture. To promote a more sophisticated and context-sensitive method of design that pays tribute to and breathes new life into cultural heritage, the results stress the significance of cultural literacy in architectural training and practice.

Application and Exploration of Baoxiang Flower in Ceramic Incense Burner Design

Traditional Chinese decorative patterns are often based on animal and geometric elements. However, since the introduction of Buddhism during the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties, plant and floral motifs have gradually emerged. During the flourishing period of Buddhist culture in the Tang Dynasty, plant-based decorative patterns were widely integrated into ceramics, metalware, and decorative arts. During this period, the Baoxiang flower pattern, influenced by foreign cultures, evolved into one of the distinctive traditional Chinese motifs. This study focuses on the artistic exploration of combining traditional floral patterns with the design and creativity of ceramic incense burners. By systematically analyzing the application of Baoxiang flower in ceramic incense burner design, through in-depth analysis of its historical evolution, cultural connotation, and artistic characteristics, and integrating modern design concepts and aesthetic trends, the innovative application of Baoxiang flower in ceramic incense burner design is explored. The research shows that the Baoxiang flower, with its unique artistic charm and profound cultural connotation, injects new inspiration and insights into ceramic incense burner design, enhancing its practicality, aesthetic appeal, cultural connotation, and artistic value.

How Design Researchers Make Sense of Data Visualizations in Data-Driven Design: An Uncertainty-aware Sensemaking Model

While data is the cornerstone of modern design strategies, design researchers frequently struggle when performing data work. This creates a need to design tools that enable design researchers to actively engage with data. However, this presupposes understanding how design researchers create meaning from data representations, as the way of visualizing the data, along with other factors, can significantly impact the extracted insights, increasing uncertainty about the quality of the outcome. As a response to this problem, we explore how design researchers make sense of data in a case study: making sense of paired subjective and objective sleep and stress data visualizations. By synthesizing our findings from two user studies, we construct a sensemaking model which highlights how uncertainty related to data qualities, visualization parameters, and the viewer’s background, affects the insight-generation process. Our findings have implications for the future development of tools and techniques for visual data sensemaking for designers.

Arquitetura moderna para a ditadura brasileira: Ambivalência no Quartel Militar de São Paulo, Parque do Ibirapuera (1965)

This article examines the relationship between modern architecture and the Brazilian Military Dictatorship (1964-1985) in the case of the military headquarters designed by communist architects for a violently anti-communist regime: the Second Army Headquarters in Ibirapuera, a project by a team led by the architect Paulo Bastos, a case with strong symbolic entanglements in the heart of São Paulo. Although the architects were against the regime and were the target of the dictatorship’s repression, a close look at this case reveals nuances in the actors' reactions to that context, as well as a more complex relationship between architecture and authoritarianism, which goes beyond the binary lenses of resistance or collaboration. This case is an important node to reflect on the complex relationships between architecture and politics, especially under authoritarian regimes. It also helps to reflect on modern architecture itself, the immanent contradictions of its objects, and the ambivalences of the epistemological investments that underpin it.

Symposium 2: DIGIFLEX - from flexible and digital courses to an overall networked learning perspective on digital course design

The digital two-way communication that society expects today can be said to blur the boundaries between the universities and the surrounding society. As the campus becomes more of an open network, the gap between formal and informal learning narrows. One can see a shift towards a perspective of lifelong learning with a more social and global perspective. Seen in that perspective, higher education has a greater value for people, than just specific skills or a specific degree. How people in society interact with various groups and organizations on social media also demonstrates this development and it challenges how we traditionally view learning. It also affects how the university conducts course design. Students and educators have come to expect the use of new digital tools. Many of these tools contribute to interaction between educators and students in collaborative learning. In a societal perspective we see a two-way exchange of meanings and needs, which makes it possible to create solutions that neither the university nor organizations in society could have adopted on their own. The focus of this paper is the course design process of a commissioned education course, DIGIFLEX. The practice meanings from students, colleagues and a reference group are referred to as feedback loops. These feedback loops continuously drove the course design and development forward and clearly indicated the need for an adaption to a more societal context. The design process is described via three stages and two feedback loops. The first stage focused on finding a modern digital design with lots of audiovisual elements for short and flexible courses. In the first feedback loop, we gained inspiration via a learning technology conference, which led to sessions with reverse brainstorming where the project group further challenged the standard norm for course design. In step two, the pilot course was implemented with the new elements generated from the first feedback loop. We received support from a reference group with expertise in networked learning and the students evaluated the course. Our findings show a need for more dialogue and informal structure as complement to the existing digital course design. This insight was confirmed by the experiences and lessons learned from distance education during the pandemic. There is a need for a networked learning perspective in this kind of digital course design. More frequent reconciliations, evaluations of needs and expectations from the surrounding society is important for the success of similar projects in the future.

Documentary collection of José Vial: Contributions to the study of the School of Architecture of Valparaíso

This article presents the work on the personal documentary collection of the architect José Vial Armstrong (1926-1983), part of the founding group of the School of Architecture of Valparaíso. This was based on identifying, reviewing, organizing, and classifying almost a thousand unpublished theoretical documents, providing new insights into his individual work and role within the group. Considering the proposal to revisit the sources of modern architecture, according to Panayotis Tournikiotis (2014), this article aims to demonstrate how the study of Vial's documentary collection would make the author visible in the historiography of modern architecture in Chile, as well as to understand the role of the architect within the School to which he belonged, and, therefore, to review new information about this institution.

Malay Cultural Heritage Preservation Through Seni Tekat Motif On Kerongsang Tok Design

Seni Tekat is a form of embroidery on cloth, usually velvet, using gold threads, and has been an important form of cultural expression throughout history. The art of seni tekat embroidery is a treasure inherited from our famous ancestors in Kuala Kangsar, Perak. In Malaysia, Seni Tekat is a work-related skill heritage hand decorated with gold or silver thread embroidery sewn on a velvet base cloth according to a certain motive or pattern. The design senses of the motifs found in the gold thread art are inspired by the design composition of the pattern that borrows the design that is sourced from nature available in Malaysia. This form of embroidery has been down through generations, and it continues to be an important aspect of Malaysian culture. Preserving cultural heritage through Seni Tekat is a way of ensuring that the tradition does not disappear with time. Seni Tekat is an important part of Malaysian culture, and it must be preserved for future generations. Seni tekat can be used in several ways to ensure that the tradition continues to thrive. By creating Kerongsang Tok design using seni tekat motifs, and incorporating it into modern designs, the art of knotting can remain an integral part of Malaysian culture for years to come. The most important objectives of this research are to create an innovative source of inspiration for the Kerongsang Tok design and to preserve the Malay heritage of culture via the new design of Kerongsang Tok inspiration. The ideation process, which has a direct relationship to the fundamentals of Kerongsang Tok design, forms the basis of this design research. The process of creation starts with the design of the Kerongsang Tok, which is developed incorporating Malay patterns to complement its new source of inspiration. A survey has been conducted to determine which design is the best, with input from academics, students, goldsmiths, and jewellery designers. Based on the poll outcomes, an innovative inspiration for the Kerongsang Tok design was created. This study will help to preserve Malaysia's legacy, provide an educational resource for future generations, and promote an awareness of our unique cultural heritage.

Design and Construction of Bamboo Products and Rattan Accessories by the Local Artisans of Lahore Pakistan

Purpose: Bamboo and rattan are two materials that greatly affect all products, fixtures, and items designed and made by artisans in Lahore, Pakistan. The aims of this research encompass the study of the traditional and contemporary practices of design and the construction methodologies adopted by the people in the area regarding the formation of basic bamboo products and rattan accessories significantly basketry manufacture in Lahore. Coming from a backdrop of knowledge transfer within families, global resources and design trends, strong vectors for sustainability, minimalism, functionality, significant development in technique and aesthetics was taken up for analysis in the study. Further, it will discuss the economic stature of local artisans amidst the economic challenges. Methodology: For this purpose, a comprehensive research has been conducted into the bamboo and rattan market in Lahore, Pakistan. The study documented insights from the interviews with local artisans specializing in bamboo and rattan craftsmanship and all their observations. The research has gathered rich first-hand data on design practices, material uses and infusion of modern influence in their work, as it engaged actively with the craftspeople. Findings: The handicraft industry of bamboo and rattan in Lahore is feeling both challenges and opportunities. The industry had then begun to bear strained supplies, with growing costs towards the case of Pakistan's timber industry. Reduced spending by consumers has turned out to disrupt the supply line and eventually the livelihoods of those artisans, since rising material costs and government taxing were on the rise. It is strategic adaptations that will help the industry to prosper with government support and sustainable practice. Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: This study presented a number of recommendations for creating an awareness, developing frameworks, improving practices, and encouraging authorities to take major actions in order to support bamboo and rattan artisans in Lahore, Pakistan. It could be focusing on historic handcrafts, modern design concepts and construction techniques. Hence, through this process, the art of producing accessories will be revived, thereby harnessing the economic feasibility of the products and accessories industry of Pakistan.

David Hyun and architectural hybridity: first architect in the history of Korean immigration to America

ABSTRACT This study focuses on David Hyun, the first registered Korean-American architect, and his architecture, which expressed the hybridity of East Asian ethnicity and architectural modernism in the late-twentieth-century urban environment of Los Angeles, California. Hyun was the son of a figure pivotal in promulgating Korea’s independence movement to the world during the Japanese colonial period. Hyun and his family immigrated to and settled in Hawaii in 1924. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he took night classes in architecture at the University of Southern California. Earning his architectural license in 1950, Hyun became the first 1.5-generation Korean immigrant to become a registered architect in the United States. He expressed cultural identity through his design works while engaging in various social activities as a leader of the Los Angeles Korean community. This study explores Hyun’s family background and examines his identity and practice as a Korean-American architect through his architectural and urban projects from the 1950s to the 1990s, including the Japanese Village Plaza, Korea City Master Plan, and Hyun Residence. Understanding Hyun and his architecture will hopefully contribute to research on the Korean diaspora across America and the world.

First Graduated Women Architects and Urbanists in Eastern Mediterranean Europe 1900-2000. The Cases of Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey

This paper provides an overview of the history of the first women graduates in architecture in Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey. Based on a review of digital archives and secondary sources written by local researchers, the aim of this research is to contribute to the dissemination and valorisation of women’s work and contributions to the history of modern architecture. The three countries under study constitute one of the most interesting European peripheries from the point of view of architecture, but also from the point of view of gender studies and women’s history. Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey, with their peculiarities and differences, condense in their recent history the political and cultural milestones that clearly show the direct link between the advance of democracy and women’s rights. Similarly, all this has an impact on architecture and urban planning; from the type and focus of projects and plans that are developed as a priority, to the people who are recognised and validated by architectural culture and its historical narrative. The research reveals the barriers and alliances of the first generations of women who studied architecture in Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey. It also reveals certain trends in the way the profession is practised, almost always linked to the socio-political context of the country and the percentage of women in the profession, among other considerations. Working for public institutions is seen as a priority working environment from which many of them have been able to make great contributions to their countries, developing infrastructures, public facilities and regulatory frameworks to improve spatial standards. Housing and heritage conservation are two areas in which these generations of women have been particularly active, some of them becoming international references in this field.
