Some criteria to select acceptably good and rugged conditions when optimising separations in High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) are discussed and evaluated. These criteria take into account the separation between the least separated pair of peaks, and the ruggedness of the optimisation criterion around each possible optimum. It is also shown that the optimal conditions selected by the criteria are also Pareto-optimal and in agreement with the ones selected when applying Derringer's desirability function.
