Depth-encoding using optical photon TOF in a prism-PET detector with tapered crystals.

High-resolution brain positron emission tomography (PET) scanner is emerging as a significant and transformative non-invasive neuroimaging tool to advance neuroscience research as well as improve diagnosis and treatment in neurology and psychiatry. Time-of-flight (TOF) and depth-of-interaction (DOI) information provide markedly higher PET imaging performance by increasing image signal-to-noise ratio and mitigating spatial resolution degradation due to parallax error, respectively. PET detector modules that utilize light sharing can inherently carry DOI information from the multiple timestamps that are generated per gamma event. The difference between two timestamps that are triggered by scintillation photons traveling in opposite directions signifies the event's depth-dependent optical photon TOF (oTOF). However, light leak at the crystal-readout interface substantially degrades the resolution of this oTOF-based depthencoding. We demonstrate the feasibility of oTOF-based depth encoding by mitigating light leak in single-ended-readout Prism-PET detector modules using tapered crystals. Minimizing light leak also improved both energy-based DOI and coincidence timingresolutions. The tapered Prism-PET module consists of a 16 16 array of 1.5 1.5 20 lutetium yttrium oxyorthosillicate (LYSO) crystals, which are tapered down to 1.2 1.2 at the crystal-readout interface. The LYSO array couples 4-to-1 to an 8 8 array of 3 3 silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) pixels on the tapered end and to a segmented prismatoid light guide array on the opposite end. Performance of tapered and non-tapered Prism-PET detectors was experimentally characterized and evaluated by measuring flood histogram, energy resolution, energy-, and oTOF-based DOI resolutions, and coincidence timing resolution. Sensitivities of scanners using different Prism-PET detector designs were simulated using Geant4 application for tomographic emission (GATE). For the tapered (non-tapered) Prism-PET module, the measured full width at half maximum (FWHM) energy, timing, energy-based DOI, and oTOF-based DOI resolutions were 8.88 (11.18)%, 243 (286)ps, 2.35 (3.18)mm, and 5.42 (13.87)mm, respectively. The scanner sensitivities using non-tapered and tapered crystals, and 10 rings of detector modules, were simulated to be 30.9 and 29.5kcps/MBq,respectively. The tapered Prism-PET module with minimized light leak enabled the first experimental report of oTOF-based depth encoding at the detector module level. It also enabled the utilization of thinner (i.e., 0.1mm) inter-crystal spacing with barium sulfate as the reflector while also improving energy-based DOI and timingresolutions.

Pushing the limit of BGO-based dual-ended Cherenkov PET detectors through photon transit time correction

Objective. The high production cost of commonly used lutetium-based fast scintillators and the development of silicon photomultipliers technology have made bismuth germanate (BGO) a promising candidate for time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF PET) detectors owing to its generation of prompt Cherenkov photons. However, using BGO as a hybrid scintillator is disadvantageous owing to its low photon statistics and distribution that does not conform well to a single Gaussian. To mitigate this, a proposal was made to increase the likelihood of detecting the first Cherenkov photons by positioning two photosensors in opposition at the entrance and exit faces of the scintillator and subsequently selectively picking an earlier timestamp. Nonetheless, the timing variation arising from the photon transit time remains affected by the entire length of the crystal, thereby presenting a possibility for further enhancement. Approach. In this study, we aimed to improve the timing performance of the dual-ended BGO Cherenkov TOF PET detector by capitalizing on the synergistic advantages of applying depth-of-interaction (DOI) information and crystal surface finishes or reflector properties. A dual-ended BGO detector was implemented using a 3 × 3 × 15 mm3 BGO crystal. Coincidence events were acquired against a 3 × 3 × 3 mm3 LYSO:Ce:Mg reference detector. The timing performance of the dual-ended BGO detectors was analyzed using conventionally proposed timestamp methods before and after DOI correction. Results. Through a DOI-based correction of photon transit time spread, we demonstrated a further improvement in the timing resolution of the BGO-based Cherenkov TOF PET detector utilizing a dual-ended detector configuration and adaptive arrival time pickoff. We achieved further improvements in timing resolution by correcting the offset spread induced by the fluctuation of timing signal rise time in the dual-ended detector. Significance. Although polishing the crystal surface was still favorable in terms of full-width-half-maximum value, incorporating DOI information from the unpolished crystal to compensate for photon travel time facilitated additional enhancement in the overall timing performance, thereby surpassing that achieved with the polished crystal.

Effect of depth of interaction resolution on the spatial resolution of SIAT aPET

Objective. Spatial resolution is a crucial parameter for a positron emission tomography (PET) scanner. The spatial resolution of a high-resolution small animal PET scanner is significantly influenced by the effect of depth of interaction (DOI) uncertainty. The aim of this work is to investigate the impact of DOI resolution on the spatial resolution of a small animal PET scanner called SIAT aPET and determine the required DOI resolution to achieve nearly uniform spatial resolution within the field of view (FOV). Approach. The SIAT aPET detectors utilize 1.0 × 1.0 × 20 mm3 crystals, with an average DOI resolution of ∼2 mm. A default number of 16 DOI bins are used during data acquisition. First, a Na-22 point source was scanned in the center of the axial FOV with different radial offsets. Then, a Derenzo phantom was scanned at radial offsets of 0 and 15 mm in the center axial FOV. The measured DOI information was rebinned to 1, 2, 4 and 8 DOI bins to mimic different DOI resolutions of the detectors during image reconstruction. Main results. Significant artifacts were observed in images obtained from both the point source and Derenzo phantom when using only one DOI bin. When accurate measurement of DOI is not achieved, degradation in spatial resolution is more pronounced in the radial direction compared to tangential and axial directions for large radial offsets. The radial spatial resolutions at a 30 mm radial offset are 5.05, 2.62, 1.24, 0.86 and 0.78 mm when using 1, 2, 4, 8, or 16 DOI bins, respectively. The axial spatial resolution improved from ∼1.3 to 0.7 mm as the number of DOI bins increased from 1 to 16 at radial offsets from 0 to 25 mm. Two DOI bins are required to obtain images without significant artifacts. The required DOI resolution is about three times the crystal width of SIAT aPET to achieve a uniform submillimeter spatial resolution within the central 60 mm FOV and resolve the 1 mm rods of the Derenzo phantom at both positions.

A depth-of-interaction rebinning method based on both geometric and activity weights

Background and objectiveFor positron emission tomography (PET) scanners with depth-of-interaction (DOI) measurement, the DOI rebinning method that utilizes DOI information to process the projection data is critical to image quality. Current DOI rebinning methods map coincidence events onto the rebinned sinogram based on the correlation of lines of response (LOR). This study aims to incorporate prior radioactivity distribution of the imaging object into DOI rebinning to obtain better image quality. MethodsA DOI rebinning method based on both geometric and activity weights was proposed to assign coincidence events to the rebinned sinogram defined by a virtual ring. The geometric weights, representing the correlation between LORs, were calculated based on the areas of intersection. The activity weights, reflecting the activity distribution of the imaging object, were derived from the previous reconstructed image. ResultsMonte Carlo simulation data from four phantoms, including the image quality phantom, Derenzo phantom, and two rat-like ROBY phantoms, was used to evaluate the proposed method. The recovery coefficient (RC), contrast recovery coefficient (CRC), structural similarity index measure (SSIM), and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) were used as image quality metrics. Compared to other DOI rebinning methods, the proposed method achieved the highest RC (maximum improvement of 32%) and CRC at the same noise level and was also optimal in terms of the SSIM and PSNR. Meanwhile, incorporating the prior activity distribution into DOI rebinning also improved the image reconstruction speed. ConclusionsThis work developed a new DOI rebinning method combining the correlation of LORs with the prior activity distribution, achieving relatively optimal image quality and reconstruction speed. Furthermore, it still needs to be evaluated on the actual equipment.

Depth-of-interaction positron emission tomography detector with 45° tilted silicon photomultipliers using dual-ended signal readout.

Small-animal positron emission tomography (PET) systems are widely used in molecular imaging research and drug development. There is also growing interest in organ-dedicated clinical PET systems. In these small-diameter PET systems, the measurement of the depth-of-interaction (DOI) of annihilation photons in scintillation crystals allows for the correction of parallax error in PET system, leading to an improvement on the spatial resolution uniformity. The DOI information is also useful for improving the timing resolution of PET system as it enables the correction of DOI-dependent time walk in the arrival time difference measurement of annihilation photon pairs. The dual-ended readout scheme is one of the most widely investigated DOI measurement methods, which collects visible photons using a pair of photosensors located at both ends of the scintillation crystal. Although the dual-ended readout allows for simple and accurate DOI estimation, it requires twice the number of photosensors compared to the single-ended readout scheme. To effectively reduce the number of photosensors in a dual-ended readout scheme, we propose a novel PET detector configuration that employs 45° tilted and sparsely arranged silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). In this configuration, the angle between the scintillation crystal and SiPM is 45°. Therefore, and thus, the diagonal of the scintillation crystal matches one of the lateral sides of the SiPM. Accordingly, it allows for the use of SiPM device larger than the scintillation crystal, thereby improving light collection efficiency with a higher fill factor and reducing SiPM quantity. In addition, all scintillation crystals can achieve more uniform performance than other dual-ended readout methods with a sparse SiPM arrangement because 50% of the scintillation crystal cross section is commonly in contact with the SiPM. To demonstrate the feasibility of our proposed concept, we implemented a PET detector that employs a 4 4 LSO block with a single crystal dimension of 3.03 × 3.03 × 20 mm3 and a 45° tilted SiPM array. The 45° tilted SiPM array consists of 2 × 3 SiPM elements at the top ("Top SiPM") and 3 × 2 SiPM elements at the bottom ("Bottom SiPM"). Each crystal element of the 4 × 4 LSO block is optically coupled with each quarter section of the Top SiPM and Bottom SiPM pair. To characterize the performance of the PET detector, the energy, DOI, and timing resolution were measured for all 16 crystals. The energy data was obtained by summing all the charges from the Top SiPMs and Bottom SiPMs, and the DOI resolution was measured by irradiating the side of the crystal block at five different depths (2, 6, 10, 14, and 18mm). The timing was estimated by averaging the arrival time of the annihilation photons measured at the Top SiPMs and Bottom SiPMs (Method 1). The DOI-dependent time-walk effect was further corrected by using DOI information and statistical variations in the trigger times at the Top SiPMs and Bottom SiPMs (Method 2). The average DOI resolution of the proposed PET detector was 2.5mm, thereby resolving the DOI at five different depths, and the average energy resolution was 16% full width at half maximum (FWHM). When Methods 1 and 2 were applied, the coincidence timing resolutions were 448 and 411ps FWHM, respectively. We expect that our novel low-cost PET detector design with 45° tilted SiPMs and a dual-ended readout scheme would be a suitable solution for constructing a high-resolution PET system with DOI encoding capability.

Design of a Low-Dose, Stationary, Tomographic Molecular Breast Imaging System Using 3-D Position Sensitive CZT Detectors

Molecular breast imaging (MBI) has been shown to have high sensitivity for lesion detection, particularly in patients with dense breasts where conventional mammography is limited. However, relatively high radiation dose and long imaging time are limiting factors. Most current MBI systems are based on planar imaging. Improved performance can be achieved using tomographic techniques, which normally involve detector motion. Our goal is to develop a low-dose stationary tomographic MBI system with similar or better performance in terms of lesion detection compared to planar MBI. The proposed system utilizes two opposing cadmium zinc telluride detectors with high intrinsic resolution and depth of interaction (DOI) capability, combined with densely packed multipinhole collimators. This leads to improved efficiency and adequate angular sampling, but also to significant multiplexing (MX), which can result in artefacts. We have developed de-MX algorithms that take advantage of the DOI information. We have performed both analytic and Monte Carlo simulations to demonstrate the feasibility, optimize the design and investigate the expected performance of the proposed system. Lesion detectability was preserved with reduction of acquisition time (or radiation dose) by a factor of 2 compared to planar images at the lowest reported dose. The first prototype is under evaluation at Kromek.

Potential of Depth-of-Interaction-Based Detection Time Correction in Cherenkov Emitter Crystals for TOF-PET.

Cherenkov light can improve the timing resolution of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) radiation detectors, thanks to its prompt emission. Coincidence time resolutions (CTR) of ~30 ps were recently reported when using 3.2 mm-thick Cherenkov emitters. However, sufficient detection efficiency requires thicker crystals, causing the timing resolution to be degraded by the optical propagation inside the crystal. We report on depth-of-interaction (DOI) correction to mitigate the time-jitter due to the photon time spread in Cherenkov-based radiation detectors. We simulated the Cherenkov and scintillation light generation and propagation in 3 × 3 mm2 lead fluoride, lutetium oxyorthosilicate, bismuth germanate, thallium chloride, and thallium bromide. Crystal thicknesses varied from 9 to 18 mm with a 3-mm step. A DOI-based time correction showed a 2-to-2.5-fold reduction of the photon time spread across all materials and thicknesses. Results showed that highly refractive crystals, though producing more Cherenkov photons, were limited by an experimentally obtained high-cutoff wavelength and refractive index, restricting the propagation and extraction of Cherenkov photons mainly emitted at shorter wavelengths. Correcting the detection time using DOI information shows a high potential to mitigate the photon time spread. These simulations highlight the complexity of Cherenkov-based detectors and the competing factors in improving timing resolution.

Development of crosshair light sharing PET detector with TOF and DOI capabilities using fast LGSO scintillator

Objective. Time-of-flight (TOF) and depth-of-interaction (DOI) are well recognized as important information to improve PET image quality. Since such information types are not correlated, many TOF-DOI detectors have been developed but there are only a few reports of high-resolution detectors (e.g. 1.5 mm resolution) for brain PET systems. Based on the DOI detector, which enables single-ended readout by optically coupling a pair of crystals and having a loop structure, we have developed the crosshair light sharing (CLS) PET detector that optically couples the four-loop structure, consisting of quadrisected crystals comparable in size to a photo-sensor, to four photo-sensors in close proximity arranged in a windmill shape. Even as a high-resolution detector, the CLS PET detector could obtain both TOF and DOI information. The coincidence resolving time (CRT) of the CLS PET detector needs to be further improved, however, for application to the brain PET system. Recently, a fast LGSO crystal was developed which has advantages in detection efficiency and CRT compared to the GFAG crystal. In this work, we developed the CLS PET detector using the fast LGSO crystal for the TOF-DOI brain PET system. Approach. The crystals were each 1.45 × 1.45 × 15 mm3 and all surfaces were chemically etched. The CLS PET detector consisted of a 14 × 14 crystal array optically coupled to an 8 × 8 MPPC array. Main results. The fast LGSO array provided 10.1% energy resolution at 511 keV, 4.7 mm DOI resolution at 662 keV, and 293 ps CRT with the energy window of 440–620 keV. Significance. The developed CLS PET detector has 290% higher coincidence sensitivity, 30% better energy resolution, and 32% better time resolution compared to our previous CLS PET detector.

Development of dual-ended depth-of-interaction detectors using laser-induced crystals for small animal PET systems

Sensitivity and spatial resolution of positron emission tomography (PET) scanners can be improved by using thicker scintillation crystals with depth-of-interaction (DOI) encoding. Subsurface laser engraving (SSLE) can be used to segment crystals of a scintillation detector in order to fabricate a DOI detector. We previously applied SSLE to crystal bars of 3 × 3 × 20 mm3 and 1.5 × 1.5 × 20 mm3 and developed two dual-ended detectors with DOI segments of 3 mm and 1.5 mm, respectively. To further improve the DOI resolution, our SSLE detector design can be used with smaller pitch crystal bars, making them excellent detector candidates for small animal PET scanners with submillimetre resolution. In the present study, three small crystal bars of 1 × 1 × 20 mm3, 2 × 1 × 20 mm3, and 2 × 1 × 40 mm3 were laser engraved to 12, 20 and 40 segments, respectively, by applying SSLE in their height directions. The segmented crystal bars were characterised in three prototype detector arrangements. First, the 1 × 1 × 20 mm3 crystal bars were characterised in an 8 × 8 crystal array designed for DOI encoding along crystal height in a conventional small animal PET design. Second, a 4 × 8 crystal array of 2 × 1 × 20 mm3 crystal bars was characterised for using the DOI information for crystal interaction positioning along the axial axis of a small animal PET scanner. Finally, the third part of the study was performed on a single 2 × 1 × 40 mm3 crystal bar with 40 segments to investigate the feasibility of DOI estimation in longer crystals for application in a system with extended axial length. We evaluated the capability of segment identification and energy resolution of theses detectors. The 3D position maps of the detectors were obtained using the Anger-type calculation and the crystal identification performance was evaluated for each detector. Clear segment separation was obtained for the crystal arrays with 12 (segment pitch of 1.67 mm) and 20 (segment pitch of 1 mm) segments. Mean energy resolutions of 8.8% ± 0.4% and 9.6% ± 0.8% at 511 keV were obtained for the segments in the central regions of the 8 × 8 array with 12 segments and the 4 × 8 array with 20 segments, respectively. Clear segment identification was found to be difficult for the detector with 40 segments, especially for the segments at the middle of the crystal. Energy and interaction positioning characterisation results suggest that both prototype detectors with 12 and 20 segments are well suited for small animal PET scanners with high spatial resolution.

High-resolution monolithic LYSO detector with 6-layer depth-of-interaction for clinical PET

The system spatial resolution of whole-body positron emission tomography (PET) is limited to around 2 mm due to positron physics and the large diameter of the bore. To stay below this ‘physics’-limit a scintillation detector with an intrinsic spatial resolution of around 1.3 mm is needed. Currently used detector technology consists of arrays of 2.6–5 mm segmented scintillator pixels which are the dominant factor contributing to the system resolution. Pixelated detectors using smaller pixels exist but face major drawbacks in sensitivity, timing, energy resolution and cost. Monolithic continuous detectors, where the spatial resolution is determined by the shape of the light distribution on the photodetector array, are a promising alternative. Without having the drawbacks of pixelated detectors, monolithic ones can also provide depth-of-interaction (DOI) information. In this work we present a monolithic detector design aiming to serve high-resolution clinical PET systems while maintaining high sensitivity. A 50 × 50 × 16 mm3 Lutetium–Yttrium oxyorthosilicate scintillation crystal with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) backside readout is calibrated in singles mode by a collimated beam obtaining a reference dataset for the event positioning. A mean nearest neighbour (MNN) algorithm and an artificial neural network for positioning are compared. The targeted intrinsic detector resolution of 1.3 mm needed to reach a 2 mm resolution on system level was accomplished with both algorithms. The neural network achieved a mean spatial resolution of 1.14 mm FWHM for the whole detector and 1.02 mm in the centre (30 × 30 mm2). The MNN algorithm performed slightly worse with 1.17 mm for the whole detector and 1.13 mm in the centre. The intrinsic DOI information will also result in uniform system spatial resolution over the full field of view.

DOI estimation through signal arrival time distribution: a theoretical description including proof of concept measurements

The challenge to reach 10 ps coincidence time resolution (CTR) in time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET) is triggering major efforts worldwide, but timing improvements of scintillation detectors will remain elusive without depth-of-interaction (DOI) correction in long crystals. Nonetheless, this momentum opportunely brings up the prospect of a fully time-based DOI estimation since fast timing signals intrinsically carry DOI information, even with a traditional single-ended readout. Consequently, extracting features of the detected signal time distribution could uncover the spatial origin of the interaction and in return, provide enhancement on the timing precision of detectors. We demonstrate the validity of a time-based DOI estimation concept in two steps. First, experimental measurements were carried out with current LSO:Ce:Ca crystals coupled to FBK NUV-HD SiPMs read out by fast high-frequency electronics to provide new evidence of a distinct DOI effect on CTR not observable before with slower electronics. Using this detector, a DOI discrimination using a double-threshold scheme on the analog timing signal together with the signal intensity information was also developed without any complex readout or detector modification. As a second step, we explored by simulation the anticipated performance requirements of future detectors to efficiently estimate the DOI and we proposed four estimators that exploit either more generic or more precise features of the DOI-dependent timestamp distribution. A simple estimator using the time difference between two timestamps provided enhanced CTR. Additional improvements were achieved with estimators using multiple timestamps (e.g. kernel density estimation and neural network) converging to the Cramér–Rao lower bound developed in this work for a time-based DOI estimation. This two-step study provides insights on current and future possibilities in exploiting the timing signal features for DOI estimation aiming at ultra-fast CTR while maintaining detection efficiency for TOF PET.

First imaging demonstration of a crosshair light-sharing PET detector

The crosshair light-sharing (CLS) PET detector is our original depth-of-interaction (DOI) detector, which is based on a single-ended readout scheme with quadrisected crystals comparable in size to a photo-sensor. In this work, we developed 32 CLS PET detectors, each of which consisted of a multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) array and gadolinium fine aluminum garnet (GFAG) crystals, and we developed a benchtop prototype of a small animal size PET. Each GFAG crystal was 1.45 × 1.45 × 15 mm3. The MPPC had a surface area of 3.0 × 3.0 mm2. The benchtop prototype had two detector rings of 16 detector blocks. The ring diameter and axial field-of-view were 14.2 cm and 4.9 cm, respectively. The data acquisition system used was the PETsys silicon photomultiplier readout system. The continuous DOI information was binned into three DOI layers by applying a look-up-table to a 2D position histogram. Also, energy and timing information was corrected using DOI information. After the calibration procedure, the energy resolution and the coincidence time resolution were 14.6% and 531 ps, respectively. Imaging test results of a small rod phantom obtained by an iterative reconstruction method showed clear separation of 1.6 mm rods with the help of DOI information.

Development and Initial Results of a Brain PET Insert for Simultaneous 7-Tesla PET/MRI Using an FPGA-Only Signal Digitization Method.

In study, we developed a positron emission tomography (PET) insert for simultaneous brain imaging within 7-Tesla (7T) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging scanners. The PET insert has 18 sectors, and each sector is assembled with two-layer depth-of-interaction (DOI)-capable high-resolution block detectors. The PET scanner features a 16.7-cm-long axial field-of-view (FOV) to provide entire human brain images without bed movement. The PET scanner early digitizes a large number of block detector signals at a front-end data acquisition (DAQ) board using a novel field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-only signal digitization method. All the digitized PET data from the front-end DAQ boards are transferred using gigabit transceivers via non-magnetic high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) cables. A back-end DAQ system provides a common clock and synchronization signal for FPGAs over the HDMI cables. An active cooling system using copper heat pipes is applied for thermal regulation. All the 2.17-mm-pitch crystals with two-layer DOI information were clearly identified in the block detectors, exhibiting a system-level energy resolution of 12.6%. The PET scanner yielded clear hot-rod and Hoffman brain phantom images and demonstrated 3D PET imaging capability without bed movement. We also performed a pilot simultaneous PET/MR imaging study of a brain phantom. The PET scanner achieved a spatial resolution of 2.5 mm at the center FOV (NU 4) and a sensitivity of 18.9 kcps/MBq (NU 2) and 6.19% (NU 4) in accordance with the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) standards.

A layered single-side readout depth of interaction time-of-flight-PET detector

We are exploring a scintillator-based PET detector with potential of high sensitivity, depth of interaction (DOI) capability, and timing resolution, with single-side readout. Our design combines two previous concepts: (1) multiple scintillator arrays stacked with relative offset, yielding inherent DOI information, but good timing performance has not been demonstrated with conventional light sharing readout. (2) Single crystal array with one-to-one coupling to the photodetector, showing superior timing performance compared to its light sharing counterparts, but lacks DOI. The combination, where the first layer of a staggered design is coupled one-to-one to a photodetector array, may provide both DOI and timing resolution and this concept is here evaluated through light transport simulations. Results show that: (1) unpolished crystal pixels in the staggered configuration yield better performance across all metrics compared to polished pixels, regardless of readout scheme. (2) One-to-one readout of the first layer allows for accurate DOI extraction using a single threshold. The number of multi pixel photon counter (MPPC) pixels with signal amplitudes exceeding the threshold corresponds to the interaction layer. This approach was not possible with conventional light sharing readout. (3) With a threshold of 2 optical photons, the layered approach with one-to-one coupled first layer improves timing close to the MPPC compared to the conventional one-to-one coupling non-DOI detector, due to effectively reduced crystal thickness. Single detector timing resolution values of 91, 127, 151 and 164 ps were observed per layer in the 4-layer design, to be compared to 148 ps for the single array with one-to-one coupling. (4) For the layered design with light sharing readout, timing improves with increased MPPC pixel size due to higher signal per channel. In conclusion, the combination of straightforward DOI determination, good timing performance, and relatively simple design makes the proposed concept promising for DOI-Time-of-Flight PET detectors.

Toward 100 ps Coincidence Time Resolution Using Multiple Timestamps in Depth-Encoding PET Modules: A Monte Carlo Simulation Study

Coincidence time resolution (CTR) in modern time-of-flight (TOF) PET scanners is limited by properties of the detector system, namely scintillator size and material, as well as single-photon time resolution (SPTR) and photon detection efficiency of the readout pixels. Recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of incorporating depth of interaction (DOI) information into TOF readout to improve CTR. Having multiple timestamps per event has also been shown to improve CTR through leading edge slope estimation. We propose using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to improve CTR in PET modules with excellent DOI resolution and access to multiple timestamps per event. Monte Carlo simulations were used to generate PET-like data on 4-to-1 coupled single-ended readout depth-encoding modules with 1.5 ×1.5 ×20 mm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</sup> LYSO crystals and prismatoid light guide arrays. We trained our CNN to perform TOF estimation between the two simulated modules with and without DOI information, as well as with single and multiple timestamps. The results show using DOI and multiple timestamps provides more than 50% improvement in CTR over standard single timestamp acquisition when sufficient SPTR (<; 100 ps) is available. Our CNN demonstrates the importance of having multiple timestamps and excellent DOI resolution for improving CTR in practical depth-encoding PET modules.

Experimental validation of a coincidence time resolution metric including depth-of-interaction bias for TOF-PET

Depth-of-interaction (DOI) variability of annihilation photons is known to be a source of coincidence time resolution (CTR) degradation for fast time-of-flight–positron emission tomography detectors. An analytical model was recently proposed to explicitly include the DOI time bias separately from variance-related statistical factors, such as scintillation photon emission and photosensor jitter, in the CTR evaluation. In the present work, an experimental validation of this new model is provided. An unconventional signal readout configuration was used to magnify the DOI bias with 20 mm long LYSO:Ce crystals. In a head-to-head orientation of the crystals, simulations performed using the metric with DOI bias exhibited a much better agreement (within 21 ps) with the experimentally measured CTR of 413 ± 8 ps full-width at half maximum, whereas simulations without DOI bias underestimated the CTR by 138 ps. The metric including DOI bias was shown to also be effective at predicting the CTR of the head-to-head setup (without DOI information) using data from a DOI-collimated experimental setup (with partial DOI information). With the development of new low-variance ultra-fast detectors, the DOI timing blur will become increasingly important and will need to be taken into account in analytical predictions and in some experimental measurements through the proposed metric.

Performance comparison of dual-ended readout depth-encoding PET detectors based on BGO and LYSO crystals

The performance of dual-ended readout depth-encoding positron emission tomography (PET) detectors based on bismuth germanate (BGO) coupled to silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) arrays was measured for the first time and compared to lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO)-based detectors using the same readout. The BGO and LYSO crystal arrays all had a crystal pitch of 2.2 mm and were coupled to 8 × 8 SiPM arrays with a matching pitch of 2.2 mm, using a one-to-one coupling configuration. Three types of crystals with Toray reflector were used: polished LYSO, polished BGO, and unpolished BGO, and for two different crystal thicknesses of 20 mm and 30 mm. All the crystal elements in the BGO arrays were clearly resolved in the flood histogram. Better flood histograms were obtained using the LYSO arrays for a selected crystal thickness, and better flood histograms were obtained using the 20 mm thick crystal arrays for a selected crystal type. The average crystal level energy resolution and timing resolution for 20 mm polished LYSO, polished BGO and unpolished BGO crystals at their optimal SiPM bias voltage were 18.6 ± 1.3% and 1.19 ± 0.20 ns, 17.8 ± 0.8% and 4.43 ± 0.47 ns, and 18.0 ± 1.0% and 4.68 ± 1.0 ns, respectively. Depth-of-interaction (DOI) resolution of the 20 mm polished LYSO array was 2.31 ± 0.17 mm and for the 20 mm unpolished BGO array was 3.53 ± 0.25 mm. However, polished BGO arrays with Toray reflector did not provide DOI information. Our key conclusion is that dual-ended readout depth-encoding 20 mm thick unpolished BGO detectors are good candidates for low-activity PET systems with small field-of-view and low timing performance requirements, such as preclinical or compact organ-dedicated PET systems, with the advantage over LYSO of having no background radiation and significantly lower cost.

Crystal surface and reflector optimization for the SiPM-based dual-ended readout TOF-DOI PET detector

Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are now widely used for positron emission tomography (PET) applications because of their high gain and low noise characteristics. The PET image quality has been improved with the advancement of time-of-flight (TOF) and depth-of-interaction (DOI) measurement techniques. For brain-dedicated PET systems, both TOF and DOI information are beneficial for enhancing the reconstructed PET image quality. In a previous study, we proposed SiPM-based dual-ended readout PET detectors that used a mean time method to achieve coincidence timing resolution (CTR) of 349 ps and DOI resolution of 2.9 mm. However, the coincidence timing resolution (CTR) was worse than 300 ps since the crystal surface and the reflector type were not optimized. This study aimed at investigating the optimal crystal surface treatment and the reflector material to achieve a sub-200 ps CTR and sub-3 mm DOI resolution with a dual-ended readout PET detector using an LYSO crystal (2.9 × 2.9 × 20 mm3). The scintillation light inside the LYSO crystal was read out by two SiPMs using the dual-ended readout method. The CTR and DOI resolution were measured with two different crystal surfaces (polished and saw-cut) and three different reflector material scenarios of ESR without grease (i.e., air coupling), ESR with optical grease and Teflon. We digitized the timing and energy signals by using a V775N TDC module (35 ps bit−1) and V965 QDC module, respectively. The combination of the saw-cut LYSO crystal and the ESR with air coupling resulted in the best CTR (188 ± 32 ps) and DOI resolution (2.9 ± 0.2 mm) with the dual-ended readout configuration. We concluded the dual-ended readout method in combination with the saw-cut crystal and the ESR reflector with air coupling can provide a sub-200 ps CTR and sub-3.0 mm DOI resolution simultaneously.

Wavelength discrimination (WLD) detector optimization for time-of-flight positron emission tomography with depth of interaction information

Parallax error in positron emission tomography (PET) scanners degrades image quality away from the center of the field-of-view (FOV). Depth of interaction (DOI) encoding is a common method for mitigating this parallax error in PET scanners. A DOI encoding method based on wavelength discrimination (WLD) has recently been proposed, showing promising results in terms of figure of merit (FOM) values. This method employs an optical filter and a phoswich detector, comprising of LYSO (bottom layer) and GAGG (top layer) scintillators. The main idea behind this method is to place an optical filter between the phoswich detector and one of the two adjacent photodetectors that are used to acquire light photons emitted from the phoswich scintillators, thereby blocking the emission from one of the scintillators. This enables identification of the interacting scintillator, based on the signals detected by the two photodetectors. However, the method has a drawback: light photon loss due to the optical filter degrades the detector’s energy resolution. In this work, experiments were performed to optimize detector configuration of this WLD method. GFAG, a scintillator with a relatively short decay time, was chosen to replace GAGG to improve timing performance. The timing performances of the conventional setup (S50) were measured to be 276 ps and 216 ps for top (GFAG) and bottom (LYSO) layers, respectively. The coincidence resolving time (CRT) for each setup was acquired by using a 3 mm × 3 mm × 5 mm Ce:LYSO scintillator as reference detector. In terms of energy performance, GAGG provided better energy resolutions of 12.9% (top) and 12.6% (bottom) due to its higher light output, compared to 14.7% FWHM and 13.0% for GFAG. Further optimization was performed by reducing the area covered by the optical filter to 25% (S25) and 15% (S15) of the total detector area. The results for S25 were 249 ps (GFAG) and 213 ps (LYSO) for timing performance, and 11.8% and 11.9% for energy resolution of the top and bottom layers, respectively. For S15, the CRTs were 250 ps and 201 ps, while the energy resolutions were 11.2% and 10.8%. Thus, the combination of two fast scintillators (Ce:LYSO and GFAG) and better optical filter placement delivered improvements in timing and energy resolution while preserving WLD’s excellent DOI decoding capability.

Depth of Interaction Estimation in a Preclinical PET Scanner Equipped with Monolithic Crystals Coupled to SiPMs Using a Deep Neural Network

The scintillation light distribution produced by photodetectors in positron emission tomography (PET) provides the depth of interaction (DOI) information required for high-resolution imaging. The goal of positioning techniques is to reverse the photodetector signal’s pattern map to the coordinates of the incident photon energy position. By considering the DOI information, monolithic crystals offer good spatial, energy, and timing resolution along with high sensitivity. In this work, a supervised deep neural network was used for the approximation of DOI and to assess through Monte Carlo (MC) simulations the performance on a small-animal PET scanner consisting of ten 50 × 50 × 10 mm3 continuous Lutetium-Yttrium Oxyorthosilicate doped with Cerium (LYSO: Ce) crystals and 12 × 12 silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays. The scintillation position was predicted by a multilayer perceptron neural network with 256 units and 4 layers whose inputs were the number of fired pixels on the SiPM plane and the total deposited energy. A GEANT4 MC code was used to generate training and test datasets by altering the photons’ incident position, energy, and direction, as well as readout of the photodetector output. The calculated spatial resolutions in the X-Y plane and along the Z-axis were 0.96 and 1.02 mm, respectively. Our results demonstrated that using a multilayer perceptron (MLP)-based positioning algorithm in the detector modules, constituting the PET scanner, enhances the spatial resolution by approximately 18% while the absolute sensitivity remains constant. The proposed algorithm proved its ability to predict the DOI for depth under 7 mm with an error below 8.7%.
