The effectiveness of a Lactobacillus probiotic on measures of psychosocial health in adults diagnosed with subthreshold depression: a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial

Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide(1). The microbiota-gut-brain axis may play a role in the aetiology of depression, and probiotics show promise for improving mood and depressive state(2). Further evidence is required to support mechanisms and in high-risk populations, such as those with sub-threshold depression (which may be 2-3 times more prevalent than diagnosed depression)(3). The aims were to assess the efficacy of a probiotic compared with placebo in reducing the severity of depressive symptoms in participants with subthreshold depression, and to investigate potential mechanistic markers of inflammatory, antioxidant status and stress response. A double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in participants meeting diagnosis of subthreshold depression (DSM-5); aged 18-65 years; ≥18.5 kg/m2 body mass index; not taking antidepressants, centrally acting medications, probiotics nor antibiotics for at least 6 weeks. The probiotic (4 × 109 AFU/CFU, 2.5 g freeze-dried powder containing Lactobacillus fermentum LF16 (DSM26956), L. rhamnosus LR06 (DSM21981), L. plantarum LP01 (LMG P-21021), Bifidobacterium longum BL04 (DSM 23233)) or placebo was taken daily for 3-months. Data was collected at 3 study visits (pre-, mid- (6 weeks), post-intervention). Self-reported questionnaires measured psychological symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory, BDI; Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale, HADS) and quality of life. Blood and salivary samples were collected for biomarkers including cortisol awakening response (CAR). General linear models examined within-group and between-group differences across all time points. Thirty-nine participants completed the study (n = 19 probiotic; n = 20 placebo) using intention-to-treat analysis. The probiotic group decreased in BDI score by −6.5 (95% CI −12.3; −0.7) and −7.6 (95% CI −13.4; −1.8) at 6 and 12 weeks, respectively. The HADS-A score decreased in the probiotic group by −2.8 (95% CI −5.2; −0.4) and −2.7 (95% CI −5.1; −0.3) at 6 and 12, respectively. The HADS-D score decreased in the probiotic group by −3.0 (95% CI −5.4; −0.7) and −2.5 (−4.9; −0.2) at 6 and 12 weeks of intervention, respectively. No between group differences were found. There were no changes in perceived stress or quality of life scores. The probiotic group had reduced hs-CRP levels (7286.2 ± 1205.8 ng/dL vs. 5976.4 ± 1408.3; P = 0.003) and increased total glutathione (14.2 ± 8.9 ng/dL vs. 9.3 ± 4.7; P = 0.049) compared to placebo, post intervention. Lower levels of CAR were found in the probiotic compared to placebo (−0.04 ± 0.17 μg/dL vs. 0.16 ± 0.25; P = 0.009). A significant reduction in depressive symptoms and anxiety was observed within the probiotic group only. These results were supported by improvements observed in biomarkers, suggesting probiotics may improve psychological wellbeing in adults experiencing sub-threshold depression, by potential pathways involved in central nervous system homeostasis and inflammation. Future analyses are required to understand changes within the intestinal microbiota and to clarify how their metabolites facilitate emotional processing.

Clinical value and mechanistic analysis of HIIT on modulating risk and symptoms of depression: A systematic review

BackgroundThe exact causal mechanisms of depression remain unclear due to the complexity of the triggers, which has led to limitations in treating depression using modern drugs. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is as effective as medication in treating depression without toxic side effects. Typically, HIIT requires less time commitment (i.e., shorter exercise duration) and exhibits pronounced benefits on depressive symptoms than other forms of physical exercise. This review summarizes the risk reduction and clinical effects of HIIT for depression and discusses the underlying mechanisms, providing a theoretical basis for utilizing HIIT in treating depression. MethodsA database search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus from inception up to October 2022. The methodological quality of the included literature was evaluated by the physiotherapy evidence database (PEDro) scale criteria. The review focused on evaluating the changes in depression risk or symptoms of HIIT interventions in healthy individuals, patients with depression, and patients with other disorders co-morbid with depression. Consequently, the mechanisms associated with depression related HIIT were summarized. ResultsA total of 586 participants (52 % female; mean age: 43.58±8.93 years) from 22 studies were included. Implementing HIIT using different exercise types alleviates depressive symptoms in individuals with depression and in individuals with depression who have exhibited comorbidities and reduced depression scale scores in subjects immediately after acute exercise. In addition, the long-interval HIIT and short-interval HIIT in the treatment of patients with cardiovascular or psychiatric disorders may reduce depressive symptoms via complex exercise-related changes on several levels, including by effecting the following measures: releasing monoamines, reducing neuronal death, inducing neurogenesis, modulating the functional homeostasis of the HPA axis, and enhancing the level of inflammation in the body. ConclusionHIIT is a relatively safe and effective antidepressant, which may involve multiple neurobiological mechanisms (release of monoamines, reducing neuronal death, inducing neurogenesis, modulating the functional homeostasis of the HPA axis, and enhancing the level of inflammation in the body), thereby reducing the risk or symptoms of depression in participants.

Effects of independent versus dependent stressful life events on major symptom domains of schizophrenia

We evaluated two models to link stressful life events (SLEs) with the psychopathology of schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). We separated SLEs into independent (iSLEs, unlikely influenced by one’s behavior) and dependent (dSLEs, likely influenced by one’s behavior). Stress-diathesis and stress generation models were evaluated for the relationship between total, i- and d- SLEs and the severity of positive, negative, and depressive symptoms in participants with SSD. Participants with SSD (n = 286; 196 males; age = 37.5 ± 13.5 years) and community controls (n = 121; 83 males; 35.4 ± 13.9 years) completed self-report of lifetime negative total, i- and d- SLEs. Participants with SSD reported a significantly higher number of total SLEs compared to controls (B = 1.11, p = 6.4 × 10–6). Positive symptom severity was positively associated with the total number of SLEs (β = 0.20, p = 0.001). iSLEs (β = 0.11, p = 0.09) and dSLEs (β = 0.21, p = 0.0006) showed similar association with positive symptoms (p = 0.16) suggesting stress-diathesis effects. Negative symptom severity was negatively associated with the number of SLEs (β = –0.19, p = 0.003) and dSLEs (β = −0.20, p = 0.001) but not iSLEs (β = –0.04, p = 0.52), suggesting stress generation effects. Depressive symptom severity was positively associated with SLEs (β = 0.34, p = 1.0 × 10–8), and the association was not statistically stronger for dSLEs (β = 0.33, p = 2.7 × 10–8) than iSLEs (β = 0.21, p = 0.0006), p = 0.085, suggesting stress-diathesis effects. The SLE – symptom relationships in SSD may be attributed to stress generation or stress-diathesis, depending on symptom domain. Findings call for a domain-specific approach to clinical intervention for SLEs in SSD.

Living alone and the risk of depressive symptoms: a cross-sectional and cohort analysis based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study

BackgroundThere were a few studies that examined the longitudinal association between living alone and depressive symptoms, and the vast majority of them were conducted in patients with certain diseases, such as heart failure, cancer, and glaucoma. This study aimed to examine the association between living alone and depressive symptoms in a large representative older Chinese population.MethodsThe China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data from 2015 to 2018 were used. Living alone was defined as participants who did not live with others ever or more than 11 months in the past year at baseline. Depressive symptoms were measured using the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D10). The multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate the relationship between living alone and depressive symptoms.ResultsThere were 5,311 and 2,696 participants ≥ 60 years old included in the cross-sectional and cohort analysis, respectively. The risk of depressive symptoms in participants who lived alone was significantly higher than those who lived with others in both cross-sectional (OR:1.33; 95%CI:1.14,1.54) and cohort analysis (OR:1.23; 95%CI:0.97,1.55). There was a significant interaction between financial support and living alone (Pinteraction = 0.008) on the risk of depressive symptoms. Stratified analyses showed that, compared to those who lived with others, the risk of depressive symptoms in participants who lived alone increased by 83% (OR:1.83; 95%CI:1.26,2.65) in participants receiving lower financial support. However, we did not find statistically significant associations in participants with medium (OR:1.10; 95%CI: 0.74,1.63) and higher financial support (OR: 0.87; 95%CI: 0.53,1.41).ConclusionLiving alone was associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms in the Chinese older population, and this association was moderated by the receipt of financial support. Living alone may be an effective and easy predictor for early identification of high-risk populations of depression in the older population.

Pituitary gland volumes and stress: Results of a population-based adult sample

Early and chronic stress was reported to alter the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis functioning which regulates the secretion of cortisol. Nevertheless, few studies mainly focused on specific study populations (e.g. adolescents, pregnant women, and psychiatric patients), and researched interactive associations of pituitary volumes and single stress markers. The present study used pituitary volumes of two adult general-population cohorts of the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP-START-2: N = 1026, 54% Men, 30–90 years; SHIP-TREND-0: N = 1868, 53% Men, 21–82 years). In linear regression models, main effects of the pituitary volumes as well as interaction effects with childhood abuse and neglect (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire) were estimated using depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory-II), and serum cortisol concentrations as outcome variables. The results of both cohorts were integrated via meta-analyses. No main effect between pituitary volumes and depressive symptoms was observed (START-2: β = −0.004 [-0.082; 0.075], p = .929; TREND-0: β = 0.020 [-0.033; 0.073], p = .466; Meta-analysis: β = 0.012 [-0.031; 0.056], p = .580). However, larger pituitary volumes were associated with more depressive symptoms in participants with more severe childhood neglect (START-2: β = 0.051 [-0.024; 0.126], p = .183; TREND-0: β = 0.083 [0.006; 0.159], p = .034; Meta-analysis: β = 0.066 [0.013; 0.120], p = .015). Further, larger pituitary volumes were associated with lower serum cortisol concentrations in participants with more severe depressive symptoms (START-2: β = −0.087 [-0.145; −0.030], p = .003; TREND-0: β = −0.053 [-0.091; −0.015], p = .006; Meta-analysis: β = −0.063 [-0.095; −0.032], p = 8.39e-05). Summarizing, larger pituitary volumes were associated with more severe psychopathological symptoms, particularly in participants reporting early life stress. This was supported by stronger associations between pituitary volumes and cortisol concentrations in participants with more severe depressive symptoms. Future studies are needed to transfer these results into developmental stages of high hormonal changes and patient samples.

Impact of social isolation and leisure activities on cognition and depression: A study on middle‐aged and older adults in India

AbstractIntroductionRecent studies highlight the negative impact of social isolation and involvement in leisure activities on enhanced well‐being of individuals. However, there is dearth of evidence on relationship between social isolation and leisure activities on cognitive abilities and depression of older adults in the Indian context. The paper reports the impact of social isolation and leisure activities on cognitive functioning and depression of older adults.MethodsData were collected from the Longitudinal Ageing Study of India (LASI), and 63,806 participants aged 45 years or above were considered for the study with adherence to the exclusion criteria. Multivariate analysis was carried out to analyse the group‐based differences.ResultsSocial isolation (F = 102.09, p < 0.01; η2 = 0.09) and leisure (F = 224.54, p < 0.01; η2 = 0.07) had a statistically significant impact on the cognition and depressive symptoms of participants. Socially isolated older adults with little involvement in leisure activities had the worst cognitive functioning (M = 32.76, SD = 4.41), whereas middle‐aged adults who were actively involved in leisure activities and experienced the least social isolation exhibited the best cognitive functioning (M = 32.76, SD = 4.41). However, leisure and age as independent factors did not have a significant impact on depression.ConclusionSocially isolated participants, irrespective of age, and involvement in leisure activities exhibit poor cognitive functioning and are more likely to suffer from depression as compared to their counterparts. The findings of the study can be used to design intervention strategies aimed at reducing social isolation by incorporating leisure activities to ensure the optimal functioning of middle‐aged and older adults.

Depressive symptoms, perceived social support, and anticipated HIV stigma among HIV-negative/unknown men who have sex with men in China during the COVID-19 pandemic: A multicenter online cross-sectional study.

To investigate the prevalence of depressive symptoms among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative/unknown men who have sex with men (MSM) in China and explore the relationship between perceived social support, anticipated HIV stigma, and depressive symptoms. Participants in this study were recruited from a gay social networking app (Blued) in China by convenience sampling from December 16, 2020 to March 1, 2021. Perceived Social Support Questionnaire, Anticipated HIV Stigma Questionnaire, and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale were used to measure the social support, anticipated HIV stigma, and depressive symptoms of participants. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed to assess the reliability and validity of the measurement model. Structural equation modeling was employed to evaluate the association of perceived social support, anticipated HIV stigma, and depressive symptoms, as well as the mediation effects. Overall, 47.70% (665/1394) of the participants had depressive symptoms. Perceived social support could have both direct and indirect effects on depressive symptoms with the mediating role of anticipated HIV stigma among HIV-negative/unknown MSM. Tailored interventions regarding perceived social support and anticipated HIV stigma, such as group therapy, mutual support groups and mindfulness training, with the involvement of non-governmental or governmental organizations, should be taken into account to reduce depressive symptoms and stigma among HIV-negative/unknown MSM in China.

A multiple health behaviour change intervention to prevent depression: A randomized controlled trial

ObjectiveTo examine the effectiveness of a 12-month MHBC intervention in the prevention of onset depression in primary health care (PHC). MethodsTwenty-two PHC centres took part in the cluster-randomized controlled trial. Patients were randomized to receive either usual care or an MHBC intervention. The endpoints were onset of major depression and reduction of depressive symptoms in participants without baseline depression at a 12-month follow-up. Results2531 patients agreed and were eligible to participate. At baseline, around 43% were smokers, 82% were non-adherent to the Mediterranean diet and 55% did not perform enough physical activity. The intervention group exhibited a greater positive change in two or more behaviours (OR 1.75 [95%CI: 1.17 to 2.62]; p = 0.006); any behaviour (OR 1.58 [95%CI: 1.13 to 2.20]; p = 0.007); and adherence to the Mediterranean diet (OR 1.94 [95%CI: 1.29 to 2.94]; p = 0.002), while this increase was not statistically significant for smoking and physical activity. The intervention was not effective in preventing major depression (OR 1.17; [95% CI 0.53 to 2.59)]; p = 0.690) or reducing depressive symptoms (Mean difference: 0.30; [95% CI -0.77 to 1.36]; p = 0.726) during follow-up. ConclusionsAs compared to usual care, the MHBC intervention provided a non-significant reduction in the incidence of major depression.Trial registration:ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03136211.

Inflammation mediated the effect of dietary fiber on depressive symptoms.

Previous studies showed that inflammation affects depressive symptoms. Dietary fiber may be associated with inflammation and depressive symptoms. We aimed to investigate the relationship between inflammation and depressive symptoms at different levels of dietary fiber intake and to explore whether dietary fiber affects depression through inflammation. A total of 8,430 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) samples were collected between 2015 and 2018. Factor analysis was used to determine dietary patterns. Linear regression and logistic regression analysis were used to explore the relationship between nutrients, inflammation, and depressive symptoms, and the mediation analysis was conducted using the bootstrap method. Factor 3 (dietary fiber and vitamins) was inversely associated with depressive symptoms and inflammation. The upper quartile scores of the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were associated with depressive symptoms compared with controls (DII: OR = 1.851, 95% CI: 1.267-2.705; CRP: OR = 1.737, 95% CI: 1.136-2.656). The DII score and CRP were associated with depressive symptoms in the group with low dietary fiber intake (DII: OR = 2.736, 95% CI: 1.628-4.598; CRP: OR = 2.092, 95% CI: 1.196-3.658) but not in the high dietary fiber intake group. Mediating analysis showed that CRP partially mediated the effect of dietary fiber intake on depressive symptoms (βindirect = -0.0025, 95% CI: -0.0038 to -0.0013), and the mediated proportion was 10.5%. In this study, we found that DII scores and CRP were not associated with depressive symptoms in participants with high dietary fiber intake, and inflammation partially mediates the effect of dietary fiber on depressive symptoms.

Development of a step-by-step system of psychoprophylactic and psychocorrective recommendations for reducing and overcoming the manifestation of anxiety and depressive symptoms in combat participants. Main research objectives: 1. Conduct a theoretical analysis of the manifestation of anxiety and depressive symptoms in participants of military operations. 2. To consider and analyze the individual psychological features of the manifestation of anxiety and depressive symptoms in participants of military operations. 3. To identify the relationship of anxiety and depressive symptoms with the socio-demographic data of participants in military operations. 4. Based on the results obtained, develop a system of recommendations for psychoprophylaxis, psychocorrection, and further social rehabilitation to reduce and overcome anxiety and depressive symptoms in combat participants. The practical significance of the study lies in further psychological assistance to participants in military operations. Socio-psychological adaptation of participants in military operations who have suffered the traumatic impact of factors of the combat situation is an extremely urgent problem, because mental disorders associated with stress during military operations are one of the main internal barriers to adaptation to peaceful life.

Personalised depression forecasting using mobile sensor data and ecological momentary assessment.

Digital health interventions are an effective way to treat depression, but it is still largely unclear how patients' individual symptoms evolve dynamically during such treatments. Data-driven forecasts of depressive symptoms would allow to greatly improve the personalisation of treatments. In current forecasting approaches, models are often trained on an entire population, resulting in a general model that works overall, but does not translate well to each individual in clinically heterogeneous, real-world populations. Model fairness across patient subgroups is also frequently overlooked. Personalised models tailored to the individual patient may therefore be promising. We investigate different personalisation strategies using transfer learning, subgroup models, as well as subject-dependent standardisation on a newly-collected, longitudinal dataset of depression patients undergoing treatment with a digital intervention ( patients recruited). Both passive mobile sensor data as well as ecological momentary assessments were available for modelling. We evaluated the models' ability to predict symptoms of depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-2; PHQ-2) at the end of each day, and to forecast symptoms of the next day. In our experiments, we achieve a best mean-absolute-error (MAE) of (25% improvement) for predicting PHQ-2 values at the end of the day with subject-dependent standardisation compared to a non-personalised baseline ( ). For one day ahead-forecasting, we can improve the baseline of by to a MAE of using a transfer learning approach with shared common layers. In addition, personalisation leads to fairer models at group-level. Our results suggest that personalisation using subject-dependent standardisation and transfer learning can improve predictions and forecasts, respectively, of depressive symptoms in participants of a digital depression intervention. We discuss technical and clinical limitations of this approach, avenues for future investigations, and how personalised machine learning architectures may be implemented to improve existing digital interventions for depression.

Association of Visual Health With Depressive Symptoms and Brain Imaging Phenotypes Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults

Vision loss and depression are common conditions with major health implications. However, mechanisms of the association of visual health (across the full acuity spectrum) with depression remain unclear. To characterize the association between visual health and depression and investigate the association between depression and brain microstructure and macrostructure in subgroups divided by visual acuity. In the UK Biobank Study cohort, 114 583 volunteers were included at baseline from March to June 2006 to July 2010. Habitual distance visual acuity was examined using the logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (LogMAR) characters. Depression was identified based on Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) or through an interview-based psychiatric diagnosis. Subgroup participants completed multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and PHQ evaluation during the imaging visit after 2014. Data were analyzed from May 5 to August 9, 2022. Depression, depressive symptoms, and imaging-derived phenotypes from T1-weighted and diffusion MRI. Of the 114 583 participants from the UK Biobank Study, 62 401 (54.5%) were women, and the mean (SD) age was 56.8 (8.1) years (range, 39-72 years). A 1-line worse visual acuity (0.1 LogMAR increase) was associated with 5% higher odds of depression (odds ratio, 1.05 [95% CI, 1.04-1.07]) after adjustment for age, sex, race and ethnicity, Townsend index, educational qualifications, smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, physical activity, history of hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and family history of depression. Of the 7844 participants eligible for MRI analysis, there were linear associations between PHQ score and the left volume of gray matter in supracalcarine cortex (coefficient, 7.61 [95% CI, 3.90-11.31]) and mean isotropic volume fraction (ISOVF) in the right fornix (cres) and/or stria terminalis (coefficient, 0.003 [95% CI, 0.001-0.004]) after correction for multiple comparison. In addition, their association could be moderated by visual acuity, whereby increased PHQ score was associated with higher ISOVF levels only among those with poorer visual acuity (P = .02 for interaction). This study suggests an association between visual health and depression and that the diffusion characteristic of ISOVF in the fornix (cres) and/or stria terminalis is associated with depressive symptoms in participants with poorer visual acuity.

Vitality, mental health and role-physical mediate the influence of coping on depressive symptoms and self-efficacy in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A cross-sectional study

ObjectiveOur aim was to determine whether the association between active coping and depressive symptoms in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) was mediated by vitality, and whether diabetes and obesity could impact on this relationship. We also wanted to find out whether mental health and role-physical modulated the relationship between passive/avoidance coping and self-efficacy, and the role of liver fibrosis. MethodsDepressive symptoms (BDI-II), self-efficacy (GSE), coping (COPE-28) and quality of life (SF-12) were evaluated in 509 biopsy-proven NAFLD patients in this cross-sectional study. Mediation and moderated mediation models were conducted using the SPSS PROCESS v3.5 macro. ResultsVitality mediated the relationship between active coping and depressive symptoms (−2.254, CI = −2.792 to −1.765), with diabetes (−0.043, p = 0.017) and body mass index (BMI) (−0.005, p = 0.009) moderating the association. In addition, mental health (−6.435, CI = −8.399 to −4.542) and role-physical (−1.137, CI = −2.141 to −0.315) mediated the relationship between passive/avoidance coping and self-efficacy, with fibrosis stage (0.367, p < 0.001) moderating this association. Specifically, the presence of diabetes and significant fibrosis, and a higher BMI, were associated with greater negative impact on participant depressive symptoms or self-efficacy. ConclusionA maladaptive coping style was associated with poorer vitality, mental health and role-physical in NAFLD patients, which along with the presence of metabolic comorbidity (diabetes and obesity) and significant fibrosis predicted more depressive symptoms or poorer self-efficacy in these patients. These results suggested incorporating emotional and cognitive evaluation and treatment in patients with NAFLD.

The association between sleep and suicidality in the presence and absence of depressive symptoms: A cross-sectional study in rural China.

This study aimed to explore the association between sleep and suicidality in the presence and absence of depressive symptoms in the rural Chinese population. The research involved a cross-sectional survey conducted in Liuyang, China, between November 2010 and August 2011. A total of 2052 participants were surveyed (987 males and 1065 females). To investigate the mediating effect of depressive symptoms in the correlation between sleep quality and suicidality. The association between sleep quality and suicidality in the absence of depressive symptoms was also explored. Suicide risk was measured using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview subscale. The visual analog scale was used to assess sleep quality. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Patient Health Questionnaire-2, avoiding the overlap in sleep and suicidality assessments, were used for detecting depressive symptoms in participants. Depressive symptoms partially mediated the association between sleep quality and suicidality among rural adults. Furthermore, some participants did not exhibit depressive symptoms in this study yet still exhibited a risk for suicidality, with poor sleep quality contributing significantly to their suicidality even after adjusting for cofounders. Poor sleep quality significantly increases the likelihood of suicidality in the presence and absence of depressive symptoms in the rural Chinese population. Poor sleep quality could correlate with increased suicide risk independently of depressive symptoms.

Intervention for Treating Depression in Parents of Children with Intellectual Disability of Down's Syndrome: A Sample of Nigerian Parents.

A good number of parents of children with Down syndrome are prone to depressive disorders. The depressive feelings are attributed to negative perceptions of the situation, self, and the future. Given this, we explored the impact of the family health model of rational-emotive behavior therapy on depressive symptoms in parents of children with intellectual disability of Down syndrome in the COVID-19 pandemic era. This is a randomized pretest–posttest control group design that recruited 88 parents of children with intellectual disability of Down syndrome. We measured the depressive symptoms in parents at Time 1, Time 2, and Time 3 using the Beck depressive inventory and Hamilton depression rating scale. We adopted a family health model rational emotive behaviour therapy intervention in treating the depressive symptoms affecting the parents. The analysis of covariate results showed that at initial assessment there was no significant difference between the treatment group and comparison group at baseline evaluation of depressive symptoms in participants. At the posttest, it had a significant effect on the intervention on participants’ depressive symptoms. Likewise, a follow-up result still shows that intervention had a significant effect on participants’ depressive symptoms of participants. In conclusion, this study suggests that treatment variable accounted for the effect in decreasing depressive symptoms scores of participants.

Factors Associated With Smoking Relapse Among Women in Japan From Pregnancy to Early Parenthood

ObjectiveTo identify factors, including mental health, associated with smoking relapse among women in Japan from pregnancy to early parenthood. DesignSecondary analysis of data from an ongoing cross-sectional study conducted between 2013 and 2016. SettingWe mailed questionnaires to all women who received a maternal and child health handbook from a municipality in Fukushima Prefecture or who underwent a maternal health checkup and gave birth in Fukushima Prefecture. ParticipantsOf the 28,562 women who responded to the questionnaire, 6,747 who previously smoked and quit around the time they registered their pregnancies were included in the analysis. MethodsParticipants were divided into groups according to smoking relapse status: a nonrelapse group, which included those who maintained smoking cessation, and a relapse group, which included those who quit smoking but later relapsed. We further classified the latter group into those who quit smoking before or after pregnancy registration. We used a logistic regression model with forced entry to calculate adjusted odds ratios. ResultsOf the 6,747 participants who previously smoked, 881 (13.1%) relapsed. Regardless of the timing of smoking cessation, younger age and living in a specific region of Fukushima Prefecture were associated with smoking relapse. Relapse was associated with symptoms of depression in participants who quit smoking before registration and with multiparity in participants who quit smoking after registration of their pregnancies. ConclusionsSupport for women at risk of smoking relapse after pregnancy requires consideration of regional characteristics and incorporation of family and mental health support with a focus on younger women.

Distinguishing between depression in bipolar disorder and unipolar depression using magnetic resonance imaging: a systematic review.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies comparing bipolar and unipolar depression characterize pathophysiological differences between these conditions. However, it is difficult to interpret the current literature due to differences in MRI modalities, analysis methods, and study designs. We conducted a systematic review of publications using MRI to compare individuals with bipolar and unipolar depression. We grouped studies according to MRI modality and task design. Within the discussion, we critically evaluated and summarized the functional MRI research and then further complemented these findings by reviewing the structural MRI literature. We identified 88MRI publications comparing participants with bipolar depression and unipolar depressive disorder. Compared to individuals with unipolar depression, participants with bipolar disorder exhibited heightened function, increased within network connectivity, and reduced grey matter volume in salience and central executive network brain regions. Group differences in default mode network function were less consistent but more closely associated with depressive symptoms in participants with unipolar depression but distractibility in bipolar depression. When comparing mood disorder groups, the neuroimaging evidence suggests that individuals with bipolar disorder are more influenced by emotional and sensory processing when responding to their environment. In contrast, depressive symptoms and neurofunctional response to emotional stimuli were more closely associated with reduced central executive function and less adaptive cognitive control of emotionally oriented brain regions in unipolar depression. Researchers now need to replicate and refine network-level trends in these heterogeneous mood disorders and further characterize MRI markers associated with early disease onset, progression, and recovery.

Is there any correlation between Magnesium status and depression in elderly people? A descriptive-analytical study among Tehran-nursing home residents

Background: Very few studies have shown the possible relationship between magnesium (Mg) status and depression. In the present study, the intracellular Mg status of the elderly population living in nursing homes (NHs) was assessed to determine its relationship with depression. Methods: A descriptive-analytical study was conducted on the elderly population living in nursing homes (Tehran-Iran; 2010-2012). Participants' demographic and clinical characteristics were collected and recorded in a checklist. Evaluating the participants’ nutritional status, Mini Nutritional Assessment Method was implemented. Determining participant's depressive symptoms, 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale was used. Final scores were classified into4 categories not depressed, mild, moderate, and severe depression. Mg level in leukocytes was also measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Results: Totally 113 elderly were included and only 9.8% of subjects were not depressed. About 21% of the subjects were well nourished. Of participants who suffered from heart disease, 80.2% were depressed (p=0.03). Regarding correlations between Mg status and depression, results showed no significant difference in Mg levels of two depressed and non-depressed participants (p=0.73). Conclusion: The results of the present study showed notable prevalence rates of depression and malnutrition among nursing home residents. It was also found that the relationship between intracellular Mg levels and depression was not significant. Further studies are needed to determine the major factors related to these preventable psychological and nutritional disorders among elderly NH residents.

A pilot study on the efficacy of motivational interviewing groups in alcohol use disorders.

The present pilot study was designed to measure the feasibility and efficacy of motivational interviewing (MI) in groups in France, using the Wagner and Ingersoll's method. Participants (N = 85) were people with an alcohol use disorder (AUD) recruited from addiction consultation centers: 37 received five sessions of 2-h MI groups and 48 were assigned to treatment-as-usual condition (TAU). The sample was middle-aged (M = 43.95, SD = 12.96). MI in groups seems to lead to a significant decrease in alcohol use and anxiety and depressive symptoms of participants in the MI condition. Moreover, there seems to be an increase in subjective happiness scores after the MI groups. In addition, participants' reactions were very positive. This study provides encouraging results in favor of the feasibility and efficacy of MI in groups. The use of MI in groups has many advantages in clinical settings.

High-level of anxiety and depressive symptoms among patients with general medical conditions and community residents: a comparative study

BackgroundThe global burden of anxiety and depressive symptoms become increasing, specifically accounts for high burden of morbidity among patients with medical conditions in low-income countries. The aim was to compare the level of anxiety and depressive symptoms in participants with general medical conditions and community residents in northwest Ethiopia.MethodsComparatively 2625 adults in the community and 1363 patients at health center in Mecha Demographic Surveillance and Field Research Center (MDSFRC) had interviewed. Level of anxiety and depressive symptoms was assessed by Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and logistic regression analysis was employed with corresponding adjusted OR (AOR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) at p-value less than 0.05 declaration of significant.ResultsA higher prevalence of high-level anxiety and depressive symptoms, 12.6% with 95% CI; 11.0%, 14.0% and 10.1%, 95% CI; 8.0%, 12% were found among participants at health center compared to community residents, 6.8%, 95% CI; 7.0%, 8.0% and 5.2%, 95% CI; 4.0%, 6.0% at (p value < .0001), respectively. Social support, loss of a parent before age of 18 years, physical/verbal abuse, and having general medical conditions were significantly associated with both high-level anxiety and depressive symptoms. However, factors such as advanced age, perceived relative wealth, living alone, and having a family history of mental illness were associated with high-level of anxiety symptoms, but not with depressive symptoms.ConclusionsProportion of high-level of anxiety and depressive symptoms were found a two-fold higher in patients with medical condition than healthy residents in the community. Patients with medical illnesses should be assess for anxiety and depressive symptoms at health center.
