Cloud Computing in Healthcare Industry: A Systematic Literature Review

In today's society, technology has become a dominant critical component in every business, including healthcare. The advantages of maintaining health records electronically have boosted patient care productivity and ease of access and utilization. The creation of cloud-based technology is one of the most recent technological advancements in health care. However, numerous issues and security precautions related to the storage of patient information remotely are sources of concern for many in the health care profession. One must comprehend the benefits and concerns associated with the deployment of cloud computing, as well as the advantages and downsides of this new technology.

PF-BTS: A Privacy-Aware Fog-enhanced Blockchain-assisted task scheduling

In recent years, the deployment of Cloud Computing (CC) has become more popular both in research and industry applications, arising form various fields including e-health, manufacturing, logistics and social networking. This is due to the easiness of service deployment and data management, and the unlimited provision of virtual resources (VR). In simple scenarios, users/applications send computational or storage tasks to be executed in the cloud, by manually assigning those tasks to the available computational resources. In complex scenarios, such as a smart city applications, where there is a large number of tasks, VRs, or both, task scheduling is exposed as an NP-Hard problem. Consequently, it is preferred and more efficient in terms of time and effort, to use a task scheduling automation technique. As there are many automated scheduling solutions proposed, new possibilities arise with the advent of Fog Computing (FC) and Blockchain (BC) technologies. Accordingly, such automation techniques may help the quick, secure and efficient assignment of tasks to the available VRs. In this paper, we propose an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm in a Fog-enabled Blockchain-assisted scheduling model, namely PF-BTS. The protocol and algorithms of PF-BTS exploit BC miners for generating efficient assignment of tasks to be performed in the cloud’s VRs using ACO, and award miner nodes for their contribution in generating the best schedule. In our proposal, PF-BTS further allows the fog to process, manage, and perform the tasks to enhance latency measures. While this processing and managing is taking place, the fog is enforced to respect the privacy of system components, and assure that data, location, identity, and usage information are not exposed. We evaluate and compare PF-BTS performance, with a recently proposed Blockchain-based task scheduling protocol, in a simulated environment. Our evaluation and experiments show high privacy awareness of PF-BTS, along with noticeable enhancement in execution time and network load.

Cloud Computing Security using by Applying Cryptography Technique

Cloud computing is the provision of computing and storage capacity to users as a service. Cloud storage is a type of networked online storage where data is stored in virtualized storage pools as a subservice of infrastructure as a service (IaaS) in cloud computing. Cloud computing plays a significant role in the efficient use of resources and in the utilization of service. Regardless of the cloud category (e.g. private, public, hybrid or inter-cloud), all service providers rely on domain server data. As a rapid development and deployment of cloud computing and cloud storage, users are increasingly concerned about security and privacy issues involved in these techniques. This paper provides a summary of basic security problems that consist of conventional security issues. It also addresses the additional challenges resulting from the cloud computing paradigm being used by cloud system providers and consumers. In addition, solutions suggested by some researchers are presented with a focus on cryptographic techniques which support secure storage of the cloud.

Analyzing Software Rejuvenation Techniques in a Virtualized System: Service Provider and User Views

Virtualization technology has promoted the fast development and deployment of cloud computing, and is now becoming an enabler of Internet of Everything. Virtual machine monitor (VMM), playing a critical role in a virtualized system, is software and hence it suffers from software aging after a long continuous running as well as software crashes due to elusive faults. Software rejuvenation techniques can be adopted to reduce the impact of software aging. Although there existed analytical model-based approaches for evaluating software rejuvenation techniques, none analyzed both application service (AS) availability and job completion time in a virtualized system with live virtual machine (VM) migration. This paper aims to quantitatively analyze software rejuvenation techniques from service provider and user views in a virtualized system deploying VMM reboot and live VM migration techniques for rejuvenation, under the condition that all the aging time, failure time, VMM fixing time and live VM migration time follow general distributions. We construct an analytical model by using a semi-Markov process (SMP) and derive formulas for calculating AS availability and job completion time. By analytical experiments, we can obtain the optimal migration trigger intervals for achieving the approximate maximum AS availability and the approximate minimum job completion time, and then service providers can make decisions for maximizing the benefits of service providers and users by adjusting parameter values.

Trust and Continuous Deployment of Cloud Computing: A Quantitative Analysis

In recent time, many studies have investigated the criteria that should guide a user when selecting a trustworthy cloud service provider. Similarly, factors influencing the user’s decision to adopt cloud computing have been exhaustively discussed. However, it is still unclear if there is a correlation between a user’s trust in the capability of a cloud provider and the user’s decision to continuously deploy cloud computing. Using a multinomial logistic regression, this study analyzed responses from 176 information technology managers who were currently using cloud computing as at the time of the study. Results from the data analysis indicated a negative relationship between a user’s trust in the capability of a cloud provider and the user’s decision to continuously deploy cloud computing. Consequently, a cloud user who does not trust the capability of a cloud provider will be unwilling to continuously deploy cloud computing regardless of the benefits of the cloud platform. This study recommended a synergy between cloud users and cloud providers to bridge trust gaps and develop security plans and policies that will effectively tackle cyber-threats.

SummaryInternet of things (IoT) technologies have developed rapidly to provide various applications and services, which benefit much on both industrial production and human lives. Meanwhile, with the deployment of cloud computing, the requirements of computing and storage capabilities of IoT can be well supported. The well‐designed application programming interfaces (APIs) are needed to offer good services of IoT cloud. APIs serve as the endpoints of services and offer convenient ways for either developers to design applications or vendors/OEMs to manufacture devices. In this paper, the design and implementation of APIs for IoT cloud is presented in detail. Taking the large number of resource‐constrained IoT devices into account, we propose the different kinds of APIs with different application protocols. APIs offer integrations between server‐side applications and client‐side applications or devices; thus, the specific implementation of APIs on these three parts are presented. Purpose– Cloud Computing (CC) technology is getting implemented rapidly in the educational sector to improve learning, research and other administrative process. As evident from the literature review, most of these implementations are happening in the western countries such as USA, UK, while the level of implementation of CC in developing countries such as India is rare. Moreover, implementing CC technology in the educational sector require various decisions to be made by the managers of the Information Technology (IT) department such as selecting suitable deployment model, vendor providing cloud service, etc. in their respective university or institute. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to address one such decision. Since, different types of CC deployment are available; selecting a suitable one plays a key role, as it might have an impact on the requirements of various stakeholders such as students, teachers, administrative staff (especially the staff members in the IT department), etc. apart from affecting the overall performance of the facilities such as a laboratory. Naturally, a proper decision by analysing multiple perspectives has to be made while carrying out such strategic initiatives by any educational institute.Design/methodology/approach– A case study methodology has been chosen as the research methodology to discuss and demonstrate the above decision problem that was faced in real time by one of the educational institutes in India, offering high-quality management education. The IT managers of this institute were planning to switch over to CC technology for the computer laboratory and they have to make a decision of choosing suitable alternative CC deployment models such as private cloud (PRC), public cloud (PUC), community cloud (COC), hybrid cloud (HYC), etc. by analysing and comparing them based on various factors and perspectives such as elasticity, availability, scalability, etc. Since, multiple factors are involved in making such a strategic decision, the most commonly used Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) model – namely, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used as a decision support during the decision making process.Findings– The team of decision makers, who were planning to implement CC in the case institute, found that PRC is best as they believed that it would provide adequate cost savings, apart from providing necessary security to maintain confidential information such as student's detail, grades, etc.Research limitations/implications– The results obtained are based on a single case study. Hence, they cannot be generalized for institutions across educational sector. However, the decision making situation and understanding its impact on the stakeholders of the educational institute can be common across various educational institute.Practical implications– Using a real-life case study of an educational institute, this paper presented a strategic decision making situation, which needs to be considered by the IT managers of the educational institutes when they decide to switch over to CC technology. Various criteria to be considered during the decision making process was identified from the literature review were identified and enumerated. These factors would useful for the IT managers of the different educational institute and they can suitably add or delete these decision criteria as per their requirements and situation at hand. Moreover, the algorithm of AHP, which was used as a decision support, was presented in a step-by-step manner, which should be beneficial for the practitioners to apply the same for similar decision making situations.Originality/value– It is believed that this paper would be the first to report on a strategic decision of choosing the deployment model for CC technology especially in the educational sector. Similarly, this paper would also contribute to the field of CC, as it lists out the decision criteria that are to be considered for making the above decision, which has not got adequate importance. Lastly, this paper is also unique in the realm of AHP because application for a decision problem in the field of CC especially in the educational sector is least reported.

REST-MapReduce: An Integrated Interface but Differentiated Service

With the fast deployment of cloud computing, MapReduce architectures are becoming the major technologies for mobile cloud computing. The concept of MapReduce was first introduced as a novel programming model and implementation for a large set of computing devices. In this research, we propose a novel concept of REST-MapReduce, enabling users to use only the REST interface without using the MapReduce architecture. This approach provides a higher level of abstraction by integration of the two types of access interface, REST API and MapReduce. The motivation of this research stems from the slower response time for accessing simple RDBMS on Hadoop than direct access to RDMBS. This is because there is overhead to job scheduling, initiating, starting, tracking, and management during MapReduce-based parallel execution. Therefore, we provide a good performance for REST Open API service and for MapReduce, respectively. This is very useful for constructing REST Open API services on Hadoop hosting services, for example, Amazon AWS (Macdonald, 2005) or IBM Smart Cloud. For evaluating performance of our REST-MapReduce framework, we conducted experiments with Jersey REST web server and Hadoop. Experimental result shows that our approach outperforms conventional approaches.

Cloud Computing Deployment and Selection Criteria for Organizations

It has not been a long time since cloud computing was introduced to many organizations and businesses. Over this relatively short period of time, many companies have deployed this new technology for their business and many others are planning to move to cloud computing in the foreseeable future. On the other hand, currently we are witnessing a wide range of issues and concerns around cloud services making companies not confident about moving into the cloud. In this paper, the authors have tried to give an overall image of different aspects of cloud computing by using fifteen different metrics. It includes both the advantages and the disadvantages to give companies and businesses a deep insight into the factors they should consider for identification of their application's suitability for the adoption of cloud computing.

Keeping Up with the Clouds - Revealing the Discrepancy between the Realities of Cloud Technology and European Data Protection Law

Data protection concerns have been identified as one of the most serious barriers for the deployment and development of cloud computing. There is a general lack of regulation and policy on a European (EU) level. The Data Protection Directive (DPD) is currently under revision and will be replaced with a regulation in the near future. The European Commission (the Commission) has acknowledged the importance of cloud computing and it is continuously working on its strategy to “unleash the potential of cloud computing in Europe.” The current European legal framework and the differences in the data protection legislation in the EU Member States have a stifling effect on the deployment of cloud computing by companies worldwide. There is a high level on uncertainly in regard to the legal obligations imposed on the various players in the cloud environment. This paper aims to provide the reader with an overview of the most important problems in regard to protecting personal data in the cloud environment. It begins with a brief explanation of cloud technology and its most important characteristics. Next, the scope of the DPD and the most important players in the cloud environment will be reviewed. It will go on to address the most important issues in respect of protecting personal data in the cloud. By the end of the paper the reader will have an understanding of the discrepancy between the reality of the current state of technology and the content and intentions of the DPD, and of why further policy and legislative proposals initiatives are needed to adequately regulate cloud services.

Identifying Key Challenges in Performance Issues in Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is a harbinger to a newer era in the field of computing where distributed and centralized services are used in a unique way. In cloud computing, the computational resources of different vendors and IT services providers are managed for providing an enormous and a scalable computing services platform that offers efficient data processing coupled with better QoS at a lower cost. The on-demand dynamic and scalable resource allocation is the main motif behind the development and deployment of cloud computing. The potential growth in this area and the presence of some dominant organizations with abundant resources (like Google, Amazon, Salesforce, Rackspace, Azure, GoGrid), make the field of cloud computing more fascinating. All the cloud computing processes need to be in unanimity to dole out better QoS i.e., to provide better software functionality, meet the tenant's requirements for their desired processing power and to exploit elevated bandwidth.. However, several technical and functional e.g., pervasive access to resources, dynamic discovery, on the fly access and composition of resources pose serious challenges for cloud computing. In this study, the performance issues in cloud computing are discussed. A number of schemes pertaining to QoS issues are critically analyzed to point out their strengths and weaknesses. Some of the performance parameters at the three basic layers of the cloud — Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service and Software as a Service — are also discussed in this paper.

Cloud Computing as an Internet-based computing; where resources, software and information are provided to computers on-demand, like a public utility; is emerging as a platform for sharing resources like infrastructure, software and various applications.
