Validation of communication between elderly denture wearers and dentists: a questionnaire on satisfaction with complete dentures using semi‐structured interviews

To validate a semi-structured interview (SSI) for communication between complete denture wearers and dentists. A SSI using a questionnaire with eight questions on satisfaction with complete dentures (CD): covering function, aesthetics and comfort. The first seven questions used a five-point Likert scale and the last was dichotomous. Two dentists, carefully trained in the use of the structured questionnaire, administered the SSI. A Greek Department of Prosthetic Dentistry. A consecutive sample of 78 CD wearers took part in the study. All subjects presented with complaints from their dentures. All participants and their dentures underwent clinical examination. The method showed good reliability, verified by the Cronbach alpha (0.86). Both dentists used the questionnaire produced very similar results. (Wilcoxon test 61-99%). Further, the association of the answers with respect to the five-point Likert scale was very high; all gamma coefficients were statistically significant except for pain and discomfort from the upper CD (CDU). This method of communication between patients and dentists is reliable and can be used to give good repeatability for qualitatively assessing satisfaction with CD. It can be valuable for clinical use and for extending the study of denture quality to establish outcome measures based on the subjective criteria of satisfaction.

Greek and Roman sculpture and inscriptions from Cyrene: recent joins and proposed associations, including a ‘new” private portrait statue, and some recent epigraphic discoveries

AbstractThis article presents a number of joins and associations recently made in the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the British Museum on sculpture excavated by Robert Murdoch Smith and Edwin Augustus Porcher during their expedition to Cyrene in 1861. The connections were made during an on-going programme within the Greek and Roman Department to provenance and, wherever possible, join the large collection of fragmentary sculpture originating from the big excavations of the 19th century. In addition, some tentative associations between sculpture in the British Museum and others still at Cyrene will be proposed, and some recent epigraphic discoveries made during a visit to the site will also be presented.

Validation of indices for functional assessment of dentures.

To validate an assessment of qualities of complete dentures that may relate to functional success. A consecutive sample of 131 complete denture wearers took part in the study. a Greek department of prosthetic dentistry. All participants and their dentures underwent clinical examination. The Functional Assessment of Dentures (FAD) 10-item criteria' describing clinical factors of denture quality was used. The rationale for selecting these particular criteria was to include a range of clinical factors to produce an overall assessment of complete dentures. The 10-item scale was examined for Internal Consistency and Construct Validity providing a summated rating scale whose total score could be used as an index for the quality of dentures. Both intra- and inter-examiner agreement for all 10 dichotomous scale criteria were all good or very good; the intra-examiner Kappa values were 0.72 to 0.91 and the inter- examiner values were 0.72 to 0.99. Statistical analysis revealed that a 7-item summated rating scale could be constructed which has marginally better internal consistency (reliability) and Construct Validity with fewer questions. The FAD criteria' can be used to give good repeatability. The adjustments made to the original summation scale, if confirmed by new studies, would further increase the practical utility of a FAD index for general dentists. In due course with data from future studies, discrimination on weighting of items will be appropriate to relate the impact of denture quality on quality of life.

Ordering Anarchy: Armies and Leaders in Tacitus' "Histories"

Tacitus made his debut as a historian with the powerful Histories, a fundamentally important book for students of the literature and history of Rome in the early imperial period. Long regarded chiefly as a source of information about the civil war of 68-69 C.E., it has recently benefited from critical reevaluation. Scholars in the last few years have determined that the form of a work is as important as its contents. Therefore, a closer reading of historical works--like the Histories--has revealed the frequent use of suggestive juxtaposition of episodes, pointed allusion to previous writers, and other literary techniques traditionally not associated with history.The aim of Rhiannon Ash's new volume is chiefly to examine Tacitus' techniques as a literary artist in the Histories. Beginning with a close study of collective characterization in Caesar, Appian, and Cassius Dio, the author analyzes Tacitus' ground-breaking depiction of the armies in the Histories. Drawing on material from the Roman historiographical tradition and from Flavian epic, Ash explores how Tacitus evokes the ethnic identities of Rome's foreign enemies to characterize the armies of the civil war in a complex and distinctive way. Next, using different analytical techniques, she investigates Tacitus' portraits of Galba, Otho, Vitellius, and Vespasian, and of the Flavian general Antonius Primus, who plays a comparatively minor part in other accounts of the civil wars. Only the charismatic Primus possesses the necessary leadership skills to control the armies, but Tacitus shows us why there is no room for this talented general in the new Flavian regime after the war. In doing so, Tacitus raises disturbing questions about the victorious Vespasian's methods and reputation.Rhiannon Ash is Lecturer, Department of Greek and Latin, University College London.

Grieks vir Nuwe Testament: In Nuwe paradigma aan Suid-Afrikaanse universiteite vir die onderrig van Grieks met die oog op teologie

Greek for the New Testament: A new paradigm at South African Universities for the teaching of Greek for Theology. The faculty members of the departments of Greek and New Testament of a number of South African Universities have since 1995 been involved in discussions on the teaching of Greek to students who want to study Theology. This article is an updated version of the memorandum the two authors tabled for the discussion. The memorandum was discussed in 1996, and during the 1997 meeting it was finished. The article gives an overview of the consensus achieved. First an analysis of the present situation is given (2), on the grounds of which the need for a change in approach is motivated (3). Then the outcomes for the teaching of Greek are discussed (4). Appropriote methods of learning and teaching are proposed (5) as well as methods of evaluation (6). It is also argued that the Universities have the obligation to provide Greek scholars for the future (7). The article closes with a plea for closer co-operation between Greek and New Testament departnents Ilt South African Universities (8).

Observations Presenting Examples of Missing Palate

Abstract The following “Observation” appeared (In Latin) in the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina of 1757 and to our knowledge has never been published in the English literature. We came across the report in the early 1970s while preparing the report “Cleft lip and cleft palate: one genetic system” (Chabora and Horowitz, 1974). The 1757 paper was translated by a member of the Columbia University Greek and Latin Department, but reached us too late for inclusion in our references. Forgotten for many years, the paper, and its translation, recently came to light in our files. Christopher Jacob Trew's clear description of penetrance and expressivity in a kindred in which both cleft lip and palate and isolated cleft palate are segregating may be something of an historic curiosity at this point, but we expect that others will enjoy reading this early example of a careful and thoughtful pedigree study.

The Bronze Hut Urn in the Metropolitan Museum of Art

ON A RECENT VISIT to New York I had occasion, through the kindness of my colleagues in the Department of Greek and Roman Art of the Metropolitan Museum, to examine the bronze hut urn (Figures 14) that was on exhibition in the room dedicated to Etruscan antiquities. The urn,' constructed of sheet bronze, is in the shape of a hut with an oval plan and with vertical walls that slope slightly inward toward the top. A bronze strip, bent to an angle of nearly ninety degrees, serves to join the base of the walls to the sheet that forms the floor of the urn. The various parts are held together by rivets: eleven on the bottom, with large, slightly convex heads, and eighteen, with conical heads, along the lower part of the wall. A bronze molding attached with small bronze pins and incised with vertical hatching runs along the lower edge of the wall and the jambs of the doorway; similar moldings frame the door itself and mark the junction of the roof and the eaves. The trapezoidal doorway is surrounded on three sides by bronze strips fastened to the wall by means of eight bronze rivets with conical heads. Horizontal eyelets are attached to the middle of each of the two vertical strips, and a similar eyelet is attached to the center of the door by three small rivets with hemispherical heads; a long bronze pin with a conical head passes through the three eyelets, thus closing the urn. To either side of the entrance are vertical pilaster strips, each attached to the wall by two nails with hemispherical heads; each strip is capped by a rounded, capital-like protuberance tapered at the top. On the opposite side of the urn are two more pilaster strips, plain and without capitals; their position does not correspond exactly to that of the first pair but is determined by the rafters of the roof. text. It gives clear explanations of 16 different testing methods, ranging from simple tests to atomic absorption analysis and electron microscopy. Each method is described with its advantages, disadvantages and typical usage. Scientific methods available for dating, with their limited usefulness for glass, are also described. "The Conservation of Glass" provides sensible advice to the archaeologist faced with fragile glass objects on the site, and helpful references for later treatment. The author notes further on that the variable durability of glass may result in a distorted statistical picture, since only the most stable objects produced tend to survive. The remaining chapters deal with glassmaking history from the beginnings to the present, "Glass and Glassmaking Sites in Britain," "Glass and its Place in Archaeology" and "Searching for Information on Glass." The chapter on the history of glassmaking is fairly accurate, although abbreviated. Most of the general works cited in the bibliography for this chapter are helpful. For ancient glass, however, it is surprising that the 1968 British Museum Masterpieces of Glass is mentioned but not D.B. Harden's authoritative

Petrological Examination of Coarse-ware Stirrup-jars from Mycenae

Elemental analysis of coarse-ware stirrup-jars from Thebes provided the first objective evidence for the movement of coarse wares in the Late Bronze Age Aegean. While the evidence of the optical emission spectrometry analysis indicates that stirrup-jars occur in several fabrics, the assignation of these fabrics to specific sources has been the subject of some debate, summarized and discussed in the light of fresh evidence by Catling and Jones but continued by McArthur.It was to cast more light on the general questions that a large sample of stirrup-jars from Mycenae was analysed by petrological analysis. This method of analysis involves the identification of the rocks and minerals within the clay and relates them to geological sources most compatible with the archaeological evidence. Recent discussions of the method include Courtois, Peacock, and de Paepe.With considerable help and collaboration from Dr. E. French and Lord William Taylour, and permission from the Greek Department of Antiquities, 37 samples were taken from stirrup jars from the House of the Wine Merchants (= HWM; dated LH IIIA/B), 25 from the House of the Oil Merchants (= HOM; dated to the end of LH IIIB1), and ten samples from stoppers found in the stirrup jars in the House of the Oil Merchants. The aim was to define the fabrics petrologically in order to relate these to the typology proposed by Haskell (this volume), and to suggest possible origins for them based on geological evidence.

InA Hole in the Heavens, the history of Cyrene which he had under preparation at the time of his death, and now published in its unfinished state in his memorial volume, Richard Goodchild, writing about the Beechey Brothers expedition to Libya in 1821–2, stated “Unfortunately a large number of their drawings had to be omitted from the published volume for reasons of economy, and if these unpublished drawings still exist, their present whereabouts are not known”. Further on, on the same page, Goodchild added “The modern investigator of ancient Cyrene would gladly sacrifice nine-tenths of the Beecheys' narrative in return for those plans and drawings which were omitted from the published report”. A small packet of some of these plans and drawings has come to light in the library of the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities of the British Museum; it is not known how or when they were acquired. Which of the Beechey brothers was the main draughtsman of these documents is unclear: the packet is labelled “Wm. Beechey's Monus. of the Pentapolis Cyrenaica — Africa”; one brother was Frederick William and the other was Henry William. Most of the drawings are plans, and it seems that Frederick Beechey was more concerned with that aspect of che work than his more artistically inclined brother.

An Egyptian Glass Vessel in the Metropolitan Museum of Art

LOOKING THROUGH the great number of late sandcore vessels in the Greek and Roman Department of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, I came across a sand-core vessel purely Egyptian in character (Figure i). The pear-shaped vessel is made of translucent, copper blue glass and decorated with white and yellow thread designs. Its height is 8.II cm., the maximum diameter of the rim 4.0 cm., and the maximum diameter of the body 5.65 cm. A piece including parts of rim, neck, and shoulder was chipped off and has been put back in place. The vessel was bequeathed to the Museum by E. C. Moore in I891.' ^ Egyptian sand-core vessels are known with certainty ^ to have been produced from the early fifteenth century until the tenth century B.C.2 Almost four hundred of these glowingly colored and delicately adorned vessels have been preserved as well as innumerable fragments. As far as we know, it was not before the sixth century B.C. that the sand-core technique was revived and a slightly different thread ornamentation became popular in the Mediterranean region.3 The so-called late

In addition to the series of stucco reliefs recently acquired on loan from the Victoria and Albert Museum, to three stuccoed panels from the Hartwig collection, and to a few miscellaneous pieces, the British Museum's Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities possesses nine large and eight smaller fragments of stucco-relief work about whose acquisition almost nothing is recorded. Till recently, they were not entered in the Department's Register, and had no accession numbers: the only distinguishing marks were blue diamond-shaped tabs stuck to five of them, and the numbers 63 and 99 scratched on the backs of two. Blue diamonds occur on several ancient objects which formed part of the collection of Sir William Hamilton, so it is possible that the stuccoes once belonged to the same illustrious antiquary. Indeed, a British Museum catalogue of 1817 definitely ascribes one of them to the Hamilton collection, and also reveals, in conjunction with a manuscript of 1824, that the remaining pieces were kept in the so-called ‘Hamilton Room’, most of whose contents had formerly been owned by Sir William.
