AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY IN DEBATE AT THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

The purpose of this research was to describe the second-year students’ speaking ability in the debate. The descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The population of this research was the second-year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University who registered in the academic year 2020/2021. The researcher used the total sampling technique to select the sample, and the number of sample members was 37 students. The instrument for collecting the data in this research was a speaking test in the form of debate. To identify if the test is reliable, the researcher used the inter-rater method that two scorers checked the students’ speaking performance. The result of the analysis showed that the test was reliable. It was supported by the fact that the coefficient correlation is 0.89. It was categorized as a very high correlation. Then the last was valid in terms of contents because it had covered all materials that students had learned. Generally, the result of this research showed that the students’ speaking ability in debate at the English Department of Bung Hatta University was very high. In general, the students’ speaking ability in the debate was classified as very high ability. 14 Understanding the Paediatric Workforce in British Columbia: A Survey of B.C. Paediatricians

Abstract Background In some areas of British Columbia, accessing consulting paediatric care is particularly challenging. Attracting paediatricians to all regions of the province is critical to ensure equitable access. Objectives In order to understand the current and intended future work patterns of B.C.’s community general paediatricians better, the BC Pediatric Society developed an online survey. Design/Methods A 22-question survey was distributed electronically in late 2019 to 427 paediatricians (BC Pediatric Society members and University of British Columbia Department of Pediatrics clinical faculty). The survey asked respondents about what factors influenced where they chose to practice, the nature of their clinical work, engagement in administration and education, time spent on various work responsibilities, source(s) of income, future practice plans and plans for retirement. The data was evaluated as a whole and was stratified based on gender, region of practice, size of community, and number of years in practice. Results 153 surveys were completed (response rate 35.8%). Surveys completed by general paediatricians practicing in locations other than BC Children’s Hospital and not working in a locum capacity were included. 94 (61.4%) completed surveys met inclusion criteria. 70% of these respondents identified as female. 72% worked in communities with populations of 300,000 or less (16% in communities of 50,000 or less and 56% in communities of 50,001 to 300,000). 25% had been in practice for 0 to 5 years, 40% for 6 to 20 years and 28% for over 20 years. Of the 94 respondents, only 7.4% were providing primary care paediatrics. The median reported time spent on various aspects of work were: 55 hours per week total time spent working, 19 days per month direct clinical care, and 25 hours per month indirect clinical care. The responses identified some differences based on community size; paediatricians in small communities (population 50,000 or less) reported the median time spent “on call” was 168 hours per month, compared to 48 hours per month reported by those in large communities (population over 300,000). 36% of respondents stated that they planned to retire within the next 10 years; this was true for only 23% of those in large communities (population >300,000). Conclusion This study provides information about the nature of B.C. community general paediatricians’ work and identifies some differences between paediatricians in large cities and those in medium-sized or small communities. The results should inform discussions about the paediatric workforce and how best to address potential future gaps in in B.C.

Examinatıon Of Preservıce Turkish Teachers' Academic Listening Skills

Bu araştırmada Türkçe öğretmeni adaylarının akademik dinleme becerisi yeterliliklerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çeşitli değişkenlere göre yapılan araştırma tarama modeli ekseninde sürdürülmüştür. Veri toplama aracı olarak Yıldız (2018) tarafından geliştirilen “Akademik Dinleme Becerisi Yeterliliği Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın örneklemini bir devlet üniversitesinde öğrenimlerine devam eden 90 Türkçe öğretmeni adayı oluşturmaktadır. Veriler SPSS 21 programı ile analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda Türkçe öğretmeni adaylarının akademik dinleme becerisi yeterliliklerinin yüksek düzeyde olduğu, sınıf, cinsiyet, anne ve baba eğitim düzeyi değişkenlerine göre anlamlı farklılık göstermediği tespit edilmiştir. Çalışmada akademik dinleme konusunda bütüncül bir sonuç üzerinden değerlendirme yapılabilmesi için eğitim fakültelerinin diğer ana bilim dalı öğretmen adaylarının veya bütün yüksek eğitim kurumlarındaki öğrencilerin akademik dinleme durumlarının incelenmesi ve farklı üniversitelerdeki Türkçe öğretmenliği bölümü öğrencilerinin akademik dinleme becerisi durumlarının incelenip karşılaştırmalı bir çalışma yapılabileceği önerilmiştir.

Transcare: A Knowledge-to-Action Project for Gender and Equity Education in Surgery

INTRODUCTION: The transgender/nonbinary (TGNB) population is growing exponentially, and patients face discrimination and barriers to healthcare access. There is a need to improve communication and make their healthcare environment more inclusive. We sought to assess the understanding, awareness, and comfort treating TGNB patients. METHODS: A 4-domain survey (personal perceptions, previous healthcare training/experience, comfort providing care, barriers to access) for TGNB patients was sent to all faculty and trainees in a single urban surgery department. The survey was based on the validated Mayo Alix instrument, with 24 5-point Likert items and 6 multiple choice demographic questions. The link was sent electronically, with a 4-week study period. Distribution statistics assessed the relative frequency of responses. Main outcome measures were the gaps and variation in each domain. RESULTS: There was a 47.6% participation rate; respondents were split evenly between trainees and attendings. Most experienced caring for TGNB patients (74.7%). There was disparities understanding general concepts; over 1/3 disagreed on definitions and considered TGNB a choice. Most could initiate pronoun (75.6%) and gender identity (71.7%) conversations. But almost half could not complete a comprehensive history and all admitted discomfort performing physical exams. Somehow, 88.5% felt they could provide the same level of care. The majority recognized TGNB patients have unique health risks (91.86%) and providers lack cultural competency, which was a barrier to care (82.76%), (Fig.1).Figure 1CONCLUSION: Disparities exist across all domains needed for an inclusive environment. Providers were aware of unique needs and access barriers, but lack of training created gaps in ability to provide ideal care. Standardized education could guide equitable healthcare.

Mixed-Methods Assessment of Incivility During Surgical Mortality and Morbidity Conference

INTRODUCTION: A psychologically safe environment at Surgical Mortality and Morbidity Conference is critical for open discussion to improve care. This study sought to assess incivility during Mortality and Morbidity (M&M) Conference in an academic Department of Surgery. METHODS: We used a convergent mixed methods design to collect quantitative data through standardized survey instruments and qualitative data through non-participant observations. The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule Short-Form (PANAS) and the Uncivil Behavior in Clinical Nursing Education (UBCNE) survey instruments were distributed to all the Department of Surgery faculty and residents with three reminders. RESULTS: Among 147 eligible participants, 54 (36.7%) responded (residents: 27.5%, faculty: 37.6%). Junior faculty had a 2.60 higher Negative Affect score (p value = 0.02), a 4.13 higher Exclusion Behavior score (p value = 0.03), and 7.68 higher UBCNE score (p value = 0.04) compared to senior faculty. Females had a 2.71 higher Negative Affect score compared to males (p Value = 0.04). We observed 11 M&Ms, involving 30 cases, over 4 months. Cases were presented virtually detailing the clinical scenario, decision making, operative management, complications, and complication management. There was no standard structure for case discussion such as root cause analysis. Uncivil communications observed implied the treating team was incompetent or blamed the team for the complication. This was demonstrated by comments that categorically stated decision-making or management were unequivocally wrong (Fig. 1). Other examples were questions posed highlighting only part of the clinical story supporting a contrary view.Figure 1CONCLUSION: Unstructured discussion led to biased, uncivil comments. Structuring discussion to shift focus to improving care may create more generative comments.

Comparative study between early and delayed perforator flaps for reconstruction of soft tissue defects over distal third tibia

Background: Flap is tissue(s) with its own vascular supply, allowing transfer from one site to another. Flaps come in various forms. The purpose of classification is to understand the anatomy and the features that each flap provides; it also allows communication not only with peers but with the patients as well to achieve the common goal of reconstruction. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the outcome of perforator flaps whether being early in timing in the first 48 hours of trauma or later than 48 hours. Methods: This study was conducted in the period between March 2019 to March 2021 on 40 patients with soft tissue defects in distal third tibia from the outpatient clinic, Emergency department of Plastic Surgery faculty of medicine, Beni-suef University also Surgical and Emergency departments, Agouza Police Authority hospital, Algizah, Egypt. Results: Dehiscence was more frequent in delayed as compared with early group (2 vs. 1 case in both groups respectively); but with no statistically significant difference. Healing complications were more frequent among early vs. delayed group; however, this difference had none statistically significant value.

The event called the The 4th Syiah Kuala International Conference (SKIC) In Conjunction with The 5th Aceh Surgery Update International Conference (ASUIC) 2022. This conference will be delivered a concept as Hybrid Conference will be held on October 6th – 9th 2022, with theme Reconnecting; Advances in Surgery and Clinical Collaboration. This Hybrid conference will be attended by international and national speakers who have expertise in the field of surgery, medical education, clinical medicine and the latest information regarding Medical Education and Health Transformation from Indonesian government. This scientific event felt very special with the presence of the Bali Medical Journal Indexed by SCOPUS (Q4) and Web of Science in scientific publications for all topics presented, both in symposium and free paper sessions.

People, Not Programs: Improving Diversity in the Family Medicine Workforce.

Patients are best served by a health care workforce that reflects the diversity of their community. Increasing diversity of family medicine requires a long-term effort to recruit more medical students from underrepresented in medicine (URiM, defined as people of Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American or Pacific Islander heritage) backgrounds into family medicine residencies. This paper examines factors that influence URiM medical students to choose family medicine residencies. Data were collected via a Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance (CERA) survey of family medicine clerkship directors. Correlations examined associations between the percent URiM faculty, percent URiM preceptors, percent clerkship cases addressing health equity, and the percent of URiM students choosing family medicine residencies. t tests determined associations between clerkship director race, preclinical electives on health equity, department faculty champion for diversity, and department diversity activities; and the percentage of URiM students choosing family medicine residencies. Survey response rate was 49%. Two factors had a positive relationship with the percentage of graduating students who were URiM choosing family medicine residencies: having a higher percentage of faculty who were URiM (r=0.33, P=.004) and having a higher percentage of preceptors who are URiM (rs=.386, P=.001). We found no such association for having cases addressing health equity, offering preclinical electives, departments with a faculty champion for diversity, clerkship director race, or a department's diversity activities. The presence of teaching faculty and community preceptors from URiM backgrounds is correlated with the rate at which students who are URiM choose family medicine. People, rather than activities, seem to influence the career choices of students from URiM backgrounds.

Meaning behind the Poem: An Analysis of Transitivity of Poems for Students at English Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Mathla’ul Anwar University Banten

The study aims to be analyzed observed meaning in poetry written by English Department at of Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Mathla’ul Anwar University. It applied Halliday Systemic Functional Grammar to identify and analyze the occurrences of processes in the poetry. Gerrot and Wignell (2008:6) explain that the theory of grammar is needed to know the text working. By using the theory, the reader will understand the text clearly. One of the ways to convey meaning is by analyzing the transitivity pattern in the poetry. Transitivity is represented experiential meaning that are meaning about the world experience and what is going on in the clause. The authors applied descriptive analysis method, it was in order to elaborate the appearing process types of transitivity in poems and to describe the percentage of process types. After determining the type of process for each predicator, the percentages were counting and comparing one to another independently in each poem. Further, the choice of processes and patterns lead to the discussion on the purposes and effects. The examination on the transitivity analysis shows that the processes employed to meaning behind the poems using transitivity are material, mental, relational, verbal, and behavioral processes. The processes tell particular significant to the process of meaning. For instance, material processes frequently dominated the meaning of the poems. The other transitivity processes resemble the purpose and effect based on their meanings. Hopefully, this paper might serve an example of how to examine the language patterns in a literary work to further observe the purposes and the effects of the patterns.

Sağlık Bilimleri Öğrencilerinin Kültürlerarası Duyarlılıkları Üzerine Tanımlayıcı Bir Araştırma

Amaç: Bu araştırma Çukurova Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi, Ebelik ve Hemşirelik Bölümü öğrencilerinin kültürlerarası duyarlılık düzeylerini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Yöntem: Araştırma tanımlayıcı tipte tasarlanmış, veriler 2018 yılı 2 Mayıs-10 Haziran tarihleri arasında toplanmıştır. Araştırmaya katılmaya gönüllü olan ve formları eksiksiz şekilde dolduran 1184 öğrenci araştırmanın örneklemini oluşturmuştur. Veriler sosyo-demografik veri formu ve Chen ve Starosta tarafından geliştirilmiş olan Kültürlerarası Duyarlılık Ölçeği kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Bulgular: Katılımcıların %78.9’unun hemşirelik, %21.1’i ebelik bölümü öğrencisi, %75.7’si kadındır. Akdeniz bölgesinde yaşayanların oranı %83.3, il merkezinde yaşayanların oranı %58.8, ekonomik durumlarını orta olarak değerlendirenlerin oranı %69.4 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Araştırmaya katılan öğrencilerinin Kültürlerarası Duyarlılık Ölçeği toplam puan ortalamasının 88.79±14.28 olduğu belirlenmiştir. Ölçek alt boyutu puan ortalamaları incelendiğinde “etkileşimde sorumluluk” puan ortalaması 26.11±4.94, “kültürel farklılıklara saygı gösterme” puan ortalaması 23.32±4.37, “etkileşimde kendine güvenme puan ortalaması “17.06±3.57, “etkileşimden hoşlanma” puan ortalaması 11.13±2.29 ve “etkileşimde dikkatli olma” puan ortalamasının 11.18±2.29 olduğu saptanmıştır. Öğrencilerin sosyo-demografik verilerine göre ölçek puanları incelendiğinde, ebelik öğrencilerinin, kız öğrencilerin, uzun süre köyde ikamet edenlerin, yurt dışına çıkanların kültürlerarası duyarlılık toplam puanlarının istatistiksel açıdan anlamlı düzeyde yüksek olduğu (p≤0.05) saptanmıştır. Öğrencilerin yaş, sınıf, ekonomik durum, yetiştiği coğrafi bölge, kültürlerarası ebelik ve hemşirelikle ilgili eğitim alma, farklı kültürden hastalara hizmet verme, mesleği isteyerek tercih etme durumunun kültürlerarası duyarlılık düzeyini etkilemediği belirlenmiştir.Sonuç: Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerinin ölçek değerlendirmesine göre orta düzeyde kültürlerarası duyarlılığa sahip oldukları belirlenmiştir. Sağlık bilimleri öğrencilerinin kültürlerarası duyarlılık düzeylerin arttırılması için eğitim yıllarında yabancı dil bilme ve yurtdışı deneyimi elde etmelerine yönelik çalışmaların yapılması önerilmektedir.

The Effect of the Discovery Learning Approach on the Basic Art Education Students' Attitude

Araştırma, buluş yoluyla öğretim yaklaşımını temel alan oluşumların temel sanat eğitimi dersinde uygulanması ve bu uygulama sonrası elde edilen bulguların dersin öğretiminde sağlayacağı faydaları ve getirilebilecek önerileri ortaya koyması bakımından önem taşımaktadır. Bruner’in öğretmeni rehber, öğrenciyi aktif katılımcı olarak benimseyen buluş yoluyla öğretim yaklaşımı, temel sanat eğitimi açısından önemli bir durumdur. Araştırmanın çalışma gurubunu, 2018-2019 öğretim yılı bahar döneminde, Akdeniz Üniversitesi Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi Moda ve Tekstil Tasarım Bölümü 1. Sınıfta öğrenim gören A ve B şube öğrencileri oluşturmuştur. Yapılan kura ile, hangi şubenin deney hangi şubenin kontrol grubu olacağı belirlenerek; 17’si deney, 17’i kontrol olmak üzere, toplam 34 öğrenciden oluşan çalışma grubu oluşturulmuştur. Araştırmanın modeli ön test son test kontrol gruplu deneysel desen olarak belirlenmiştir. Araştırmada tutum ölçeği araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilmiştir. Tutum ölçeği geliştirme sürecine ve madde yazma ilkelerine uygun olarak maddelerin bilişsel, duyuşsal ve davranışsal öğeleri içermesine, olumlu ve olumsuz maddelerin ölçek içerisinde eşit dağılımına özen gösterilmiştir. Araştırmanın başında her iki gruba da tutum ölçeği ön test olarak uygulanmış, 8 haftalık çalışma sonrasında son test uygulanmıştır. Deney ve kontrol gruplarında tutum ölçeğinden elde edilen veriler üzerinde dağılımın normallik varsayımını yerine getirdiği gerekçesine dayalı olarak parametrik testlerden bağımlı ve bağımsız gruplar için “t” testi tekniklerinden yararlanılmıştır. Analizlerden elde edilen sonuçlar tablolaştırılarak yorumlanmıştır. Araştırma sonrasında buluş yoluyla öğretim yaklaşımının uygulandığı deney grubu ile geleneksel yöntemin uygulandığı kontrol grubu arasında tutumlar baz alındığında deney ve kontrol grubu tutumlarında anlamlı bir farklılık oluşmamıştır.

REFLECTIONS ON TEACHING COMPOSITION FOR CONFIDENCE, EQUITY AND COMMUNITY

AbstractThe increasing precarity of arts academic jobs, combined with a much needed focus on equity and decolonisation, are de-privileging and destabilising the experimental music tradition and contemporary composer identity. As a result, composition departments are pursuing a paradox: scrambling to focus on specific marketable skills while also broadening the genres taught. After teaching in a composition department, a generalised arts department and a prison college programme, I describe methods to provide skills training for students interested in different genres, even if those genres are not the specialty of a department's faculty. These include: (1) discrete ‘levels’ of creative thought, from high-level questions of art's purpose to ground-level skills training; (2) creative process assignments, in which students plan and document their way through a prompt, developing a practical discipline into which desired skills can be incorporated; and (3) formal spaces for students to learn from each other, one-on-one, getting deeper into the similarities and differences they have. The goal is to empower students not simply via marketability, but by developing a sense of vocation without tethering creativity to employment, so that students may more realistically and more potently design their own lives in music.

The Network Capital of the Cossack Youth as an Element of the Social Capital of the Russian Cossacks

Introduction. The article considers the modern Russian Cossacks as a complex social object in the trinity of interpersonal, intragroup and intrapersonal communications. The ethno markers of the Cossacks that influence the perception of “friend or foe” are determined; the problem of the concept of the network capital of the Cossacks is formulated. Methodology and sources. The section formulates the construction of network capital from the point of view of structuring social relations in the network approach, and from the point of view of the culture of interactive communication in the network space. The main approaches to the definition and measurement of network capital are shown, its specificity for the social group of Cossack youth is revealed. The network model of the Cossacks and Cossack youth is described as a whole and its part. The role of state-forming values in the Cossack environment is shown. The largest network Cossack youth organizations from different regions of Russia are presented. Results and discussion. The article describes the methodology for researching network capital, organized at the All-Russian Gathering of Cossack Youth in the fall of 2021 in the city of Krasnoyarsk. On the basis of four groups of values of the Cossack youth, namely social, personal, values of the Cossacks and values of the direct contact environment, a network analysis of positive and negative relationships, as well as relationships in subgroups of values, is carried out. As a comparative analysis, the results of measuring the network capital of students of the IT faculty of the evening department are used, which show a clear professional orientation and belonging to a generalized supranational community of IT specialists and a low team-building potential. The authors conclude that the construction of “network capital” is more often used in an empirical sense to obtain information about the mechanisms of access to resources or some kind of influence through network relations. Conclusion. In general, the theory of “network capital” is in the process of its formation and requires further scientific understanding. In the ongoing process of institutionalization of the Cossacks, contradictions often arise between the traditions and values of modern society, which the Cossack youth seeks to resolve in a compromise way. It is concluded that the network capital of the Cossack youth is in the stage of its active accumulation and continuous transformations.

Decolonizing US anthropology

AbstractAfter Ferguson, Standing Rock, the Black Lives Matter protests, and the crisis of refugees at the US southern border, there have been renewed calls for a racial reckoning in US anthropology. Dissatisfaction on the domestic front runs parallel to an unease over US anthropology's failure to adequately address militarism, imperialism, and predatory capitalism abroad. Finally, there is the fraught question of US anthropology's oversized influence within world anthropologies. We propose that a reassessment of US anthropology might fruitfully begin with some counterfactual history. How would US anthropology been different had the founding generations conceptualized the discipline as a decolonizing project? What topics or themes might have become central to US anthropology? How might our methods have been different? To make anthropology departments more diverse, inclusive, and equitable, we need to do more than add faculty and students of color. Despite being a field whose central concept is “culture,” we have paid far too little attention to the culture of anthropology departments. Do unexamined practices of “white‐norming” that shape the everyday lives of faculty and students in anthropology departments persistently “Other”—marginalize and alienate—people of color?

The Undergraduate RA: Benefits and Challenges for Sociology Faculty and Research Assistants

The undergraduate research assistantship is key in the professionalization of future sociologists. Our study is the first in the social sciences to document benefits and challenges from both faculty and student perspectives. By interviewing 13 undergraduate research assistants (RAs) and 10 faculty in sociology departments at primarily undergraduate institutions, we outline the benefits and challenges of faculty-directed research with undergraduates. We find that students develop practical research, project management, and interpersonal skills while learning about career interests and developing relationships with mentors. RA challenges include repetitive tasks and time management. Faculty benefit from assistance with their work, the opportunity to mentor, and pedagogical feedback. Faculty challenges include communication, undergraduate turnover, and institutional barriers. Comparing these benefits and challenges with the goals and motives of both RAs and faculty, we suggest recommendations for departments and institutions interested in increasing undergraduate engagement in research.

Contrastive analysis of some errors committed by second language Learners of English at the English department, faculty of education, Sirte University

The main concern of this paper is to focus on the errors committed by second language learners of English at the English department faculty of education. The study is of a descriptive nature. The errors located are classified and then described in order to know the reasons behind them. The approach adopted in this research paper is a contrastive approach. The results of analysis gave a clue about the strategies adopted by Learners when confronted with a writing task. Analyzing the errors located is of vital importance for syllabus and material designers as well as classroom teachers and contributes substantially in improving language learning and teaching processes.

A Research on the Content of the Flute Education Course Carried out in Faculty of Education Music Teacher Education Departments and Faculty of Fine Arts Music Departments in Turkey

One of the most important areas of music education is instrument education. Vocational music education, which is within the scope of music education in Turkey, is carried out in Education Faculties, Fine Arts Faculties, and State Conservatories in order to provide individuals with music as a profession. In these institutions, flute education is also included within the scope of “Individual Instrument” courses, where many instruments are available. In the research, the opinions of the lecturers working in different institutions were taken regarding the content of the flute education courses conducted in the Department of Music Education of Fine Arts Education Department and the Music Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Turkey. The research is important in order to show whether the students studying flute have achieved the goals of the flute education program, which they must earn in the four-year period, and that the students’ success in this regard can be increased. In this context, interview questions developed by the researcher and receiving expert opinions were applied to the study group, and the data obtained were tabulated and presented using the content analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods.

The Translation of the Indonesian Noun Phrases into English

The title of this research is the translation of the Indonesian noun phrases (NPs) into English. NPs are groups of words of which heads are nouns. Head nouns can be expanded to the right or to the left in a phrase. The discussion in this research was limited to the NPs with expansion to the right. Extending a head noun to the right in Indonesian can be done by adding modifiers with or without a determiner. The purpose of this study is to describe the types of modifiers of the Indonesian NPs with expansion to the right and their translation into English. This research is categorized as a descriptive qualitative study, the data were taken from the translations of the folk tales by the fourth-semester students of The English Department Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, with the application of observation methods and documentation techniques. The data were then analyzed by applying the theory of translation proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet. The results showed that the types of Indonesian NPs have modifier elements in the form of nouns or noun phrases, adjectives or adjective phrases, verbs or verb phrases, prepositional phrases, clauses, and appositives. The Indonesian NPs with right expansion were translated into the English NPs with the right and left expansions.

Attitude, Ethics, and Communication module for medical undergraduates: rapid transition to online mode of teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic

Introduction: Imparting skills related to attitudes, ethics and communication (AETCOM) is as important as psychomotor and cognitive skills in medical education. During the COVID-19 pandemic with the physical shut-down of medical colleges, alternatives to in-person teaching of AETCOM competencies were explored. Here we describe our experience of conducting online AETCOM sessions for medical undergraduates. Methodology: An online teaching/learning schedule was developed for the topic “working in a health care team” for AETCOM sessions in the Community Medicine department in a medical college in North India. A series of brainstorming sessions among departmental faculty members were followed by mapping of available resources. Postgraduate students of the department were involved as facilitators. Feedback from students was obtained. Results: The developed schedule was implemented with 169 students of the phase II undergraduate course. The schedule was based on synchronous sharing of open source online videos such as movies, or role plays followed by small group discussion sessions which were facilitated by a teacher. Narrative writing, a short-answer type questionnaire, followed by another round of discussion was used to promote critical thinking. The students mentioned the selected videos, the structure of the online questionnaire for submission of narratives and discussion sessions which were participatory and voluntary in nature helped them to understand the scheduled topic. Conclusion: Carefully developed structured strategies based on triggers such as videos can serve as a possible alternative to teach AETCOM competencies in case of shutdown of in person teaching in medical colleges.
