The Validity of Subjects in Korean Dental Technicians' Licensing Examination

This study prepared a basic framework for the development and improvement of Korean Dental Technicians' Licensing Examination, based on actual test questions. A peer review was conducted to ensure relevance to current practices in dental technology. For the statistical analysis, 1000 dental laboratory technicians were selected; specialists in dental laboratory technology (laboratory owners, educators, etc.) were involved in creating valid and reliable questions. Results indicated that examination subjects should be divided into three categories: basic dental laboratory theory, dental laboratory specialties, and a practical examination. To ensure relevance to current practice, there should be less emphasis on basic dental laboratory theory, including health-related laws, and more emphasis on dental laboratory specialties. Introduction to dental anatomy should be separated from oral anatomy and tooth morphology; and fixed prosthodontics should be separated from crown and bridge technology and dental ceramics technology. Removable orthodontic appliance technology should be renamed 'orthodontic laboratory technology'. There should be less questions related to health related law, oral anatomy, dental hygiene, dental materials science and inlay, while the distribution ratio of questions related to tooth morphology should be maintained. There should be a decrease in the distribution ratio of questions related to crown and bridge technology, dental ceramics technology, complete dentures and removable partial dentures technology, and orthodontic laboratory technology. In the practical examination, the current multiple choice test should be replaced with tooth carving using wax or plaster. In dental laboratory specialties, subjects related to contemporary dental laboratory technology should be included in the test items.

Selecting Nanotechnology‐Based Composites Using Colorimetric and Visual Analysis for the Restoration of Anterior Dentition: A Case Report

Currently it is possible to use direct composites and layering techniques to replicate the complex internal structures, visible shape, color, and surface anatomy of natural teeth. To do so, however, requires dentists to understand the principles of nature and the science of dental materials to determine the most suitable restorative material for a specific indication. By incorporating relatively new technologies--colorimetric analysis, which provides computerized shade guide definitions of a tooth and essential information to verify shade mapping, and a new nanotechnology-based direct composite--into composite layering techniques, dentists can more predictably replicate the esthetics of natural teeth. This article presents a case in which both technologies, used in combination with a composite layering technique, contributed to the esthetic and functional restoration of the maxillary central incisors.

Materials selection is the second in the series on crowns and other extra-coronal restorations. Some of us are less than inspired by dental materials science. Nevertheless, many of the things that concern us clinically with crowns and their alternatives are based on material properties. We worry about the strength of the restoration, how well it fits and its aesthetics. We also worry about wear, occlusal control and biocompatibility. Not least of our concerns are dental laboratory charges, which inevitably have to be passed on to the patient.

Gambaran Perkembangan Endodontologi Masa Kini

Development of the biomedical sciences, oral biology and dental material sciences have an impact in the development of endodontology. Similarly are biomolecular and immunology of the pulp and periapical tissue which should be anticipated to develop endodontic clinical services. To date conventional endodontic treatment has confined endodontic surgery. On the other hand, the endodontic surgery can executed with the development of endodontic microsurgery. The endodontic services in Indonesia is still to be elaborated. The Indonesian Department of Health has not established a direction of treatment of endodontic cases which consist of 47.83% (hospital) and 49.90% (Puskesmas) of all the cases of dental diseases, although extraction of permanent tooth has been restricted especially for the 12 years old.

Rapid development in dental material sciences rendered various dental plaster production and one of them mostly used is dental stone plaster. According to survey conducted in Jakarta in 1997-1998, there are at least seven kinds of them. They are oftenly sold without marking (such as lot numbers, date of manifacture, net weight, physical properties) as regulations in accordance with ADA or ISO. This condition can affect entirely the materials using. On the other hand the prices highly increased (>300%) in 1997-1998 has made consumers preferring to choose the materials economically, although there are various brands in the market. The dentist should be informed about the importance of the packaging marking, so that they prefer to choose the right materials.

A Novel Approach for Characterisation of Adhesive Toothbiomaterial Interfaces by ATM.

Abstract The ability to adhere biomaterials to tooth tissue has drastically changed today's dental restorative practice. Modern adhesive techniques enable dentists to restrict operative procedures to the sole removal of diseased tooth tissue without further destruction of the remaining sound tissue. However, adhesive restorations have only a short lifetime of ca. 5 years. Extending the restoration lifetime is therefore one of the primary goals of present research in dental materials science. In practical relevance and direct benefit to that objective are studies that contribute to a better understanding of the interfacial phenomena that take place between restorative material and tooth tissue. Therefore, the resolution of instruments available to elucidate this interfacial interaction is essential. Besides the transmission electron microscope (TEM), a more recent powerful tool to study tooth-biomaterial interaction with high resolution is the atomic force microscope (AFM).

Effect of parallel surface cuts on bonding to dentine

The strength of adhesive joints has been found to result from combinations of micromechanical, chemical and diffusion components depending on the system 1. The development of adhesives that bond dental restorative materials to human dentine has been a major advance in the science of dental materials. The purpose of this investigation was to study the contribution of parallel surface cuts on the joint strength of dentine adhesives. Half of the specimens were finished with 60 grit SiC paper as a control. The other half were polished with 600 grit SiC paper and then finished with an instrument that produced a series of parallel surface cuts. A two-way analysis of variance showed that both the surface preparation and the adhesive system had a significant effect on shear bond strength (p < 0.0001). In general, the samples finished with parallel surface cuts gave shear bond strength values about double those finished with silicon carbide alone. For those control samples prepared with a 60 grit surface, the predominant type of failure was at the tooth/adhesive interface. The majority of samples with parallel surface cuts failed cohesively within the adhesive system. The experimental instrument is designed to produce retentive grooves or undercuts in the dentine surface which enhance micromechanical adhesion.

Dental biomechanics and the dental curriculum

Attention is drawn to the numerous biomechanical concepts which provide the scientific basis for the many precepts taught in the various branches of clinical dentistry. It is suggested that dental biomechanics should logically be a subject area in its own right and that a practical way to achieve this would be for it to be gradually incorporated into the allied and complementary subject of dental materials science.

Dental materials science — the maintenance of standards

Standards for dental materials are available for both biological and chemical/physical properties. In order to predict the clinical performance of a material by means of standard tests, both the test and the method used in the test should ideally simulate clinical usage. However, owing to lack of knowledge with regard to intra-oral failure modes, and technical considerations in the performance of tests, this ideal may not always be achieved.

Glass-ionomer cement origins, development and future

The origin of the glass-ionomer cement lies in a change in attitude regarding the qualities demanded of a dental material. The foundation of dental materials science in the 1920s tended to stultify the development of dental materials because of an over emphasis on mechanical properties. In this period, traditional materials invented before the end of the 19th century remained in use. A change in approach in the 1950s and 1960s, brought about by the realization of the importance of biocompatibility and adhesion, led to a revolution in dental materials science. This era was characterized by closer collaboration between materials research scientist and clinician. New materials were developed, including the glass-ionomer cement, with novel properties which were exploited by the development of novel clinical techniques. The glass-ionomer cement has the crucial property of adhering to untreated dentine and enamel, a quality which has led to the development of clinical techniques to minimize cavity preparation and thus loss of tooth material.

The relevance of prosthodontics and the science of dental materials to the practice of dentistry

This article attempts by historical reference to demonstrate the present and future relevance of prosthodontics and the science of dental materials to the practice of dentistry. The historical introduction indicates the inadequacy of prosthodontic techniques and materials used in the past, so that an immediate appreciation of modern techniques may be recognized. The relevance of prosthodontics is discussed from an educational point of view, and the importance of existing techniques is emphasized with regard to the problems of today (Phillips, 1976). The future role of implant materials and prosthodontics is summarized.The significance of dental materials science is discussed with reference to groups of materials and particular research techniques.
