Demirjian's and Cameriere's Methods for the Assessment of Dental Age Estimation in Children from a Southern Brazilian City.

The chronological age estimation of living individuals is a crucial part of forensic practice and clinical practice, such as in orthodontic treatment. It is well-known that methods for age estimation in living children should be tested on different populations. Ethnic affiliations in Brazil are divided into several major groups depending on the region, with the south of Brazil being known for its German immigration. (1) Background: This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between chronological age and dental age using Demirjian's method and Cameriere's method in a group of children from Joinville, South Brazil to investigate if both methods can be used to estimate dental age in this population. (2) Methods: The sample consisted of 229 panoramic radiographs (119 were males and were 110 females) from Brazilian children (ages ranging from 6 to 12 years). The chronological age at the time of the panoramic radiographic exam was calculated for each child. The dental age was estimated according to Demirjian's method and Cameriere's method. All continuous data were tested for normality by using the Shapiro-Wilk test. The Pearson correlation coefficient test was applied. An alpha of 5% (p < 0.05) was used for all analyses. (3) Results: The mean chronological age was 8.75 years. According to Demirjian's method, the mean dental age was 9.3 years, while according to Cameriere's method, the mean dental age was 8.66 years. A strong correlation between chronological age and dental age according to Demirjian (r = 0.776 and p < 0.0001) and Cameriere (r = 0.735 and p < 0.0001) was observed for both genders. (4) Conclusions: Both methods presented a good correlation with chronological age in the studied population and could be used to assess dental age in this population.

A comparison of estimated age based on pulp volume from cone beam computed tomography (CT) images and panoramic radiography data with chronological age.

This retrospective study was conducted to evaluate different methods for dental age estimation in children and to examine the feasibility of using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data for age estimation. A total of 200 radiographic records (both digital panoramic radiographs and CBCTs) were acquired from 100 children aged 9 to 16 years, all taken on the same dates. Radiographic data was acquired from archived records and included both panoramic radiography and CBCT data belonging to the same individual. CBCT was used when panoramic radiographic data was insufficient. The pulp volume and pulp/tooth volume ratio of the left first molar teeth in the mandible were calculated from the CBCT data using MIMICS software. In addition, age was estimated by the Demirjian and Willems methods from data obtained from panoramic radiography images. Statistical analyses and linear regression analysis were performed as necessary. There was a statistically significant difference between the mean difference between the Demirjian method and chronological age, and between the Willems method and chronological age (p < 0.001). Statistically significance was achieved in a linear regression model created from pulp volume (R2 = 0.098) and pulp/tooth volume ratio (R2 = 0.395) data for the estimated dental age analysis (p < 0.001) and a negative correlation was observed with chronological age. When compared estimated dental age from CBCT data with chronological age, the pulp/tooth volume ratio method yielded results closer to chronological age than using only pulp volume data. When considering both panoramic radiographic age estimation methods and age estimation methods using CBCT data, we found that the results obtained with the Willems method, a panoramic radiographic age estimation technique, provided the closest results to the chronological age. More contributions should be made to the literature regarding the feasibility of age estimation using pulp and tooth volume as an alternative method.

Cameriere's open apices methodology for dental age estimation in children: a scoping review from a Latin American perspective.

Dental age estimation (DAE) is key to establishing an individual's identity, and this is relevant in minors. A widely used method for DAE in children is Cameriere's open apices (CAM). Despite its wide dissemination, there are no clear reports of its use in Latin American populations. A scoping review was conducted using a search strategy in the PubMed/MEDLINE database, Web of Science, and a complementary manual search. Only papers using CAM or its regression equation models for evaluating Latin American populations were included. Ten studies published between 2007 and 2020 responded to the search objective. Brazil was the country with the most studies using CAM (7/10), and the University of Macerata (Italy) was the most declared affiliation (6/10). Seven studies used the original CAM formula in populations from Brazil and Peru, while the European formula (EuCAM) was applied in Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil. Although the method underestimated the age values with acceptable error margins, the correction factor substantially improved the predictive power of the method. Some limitations of the method are highlighted. CAM and its variants can be useful for validation in Latin American settings, but attention to population structures and terminologies is suggested for future research.

Dental Age Estimation Using the Demirjian Method: Statistical Analysis Using Neural Networks

In children and adolescents, dental age estimation is performed with the development of the teeth. Various statistical analysis methods have been used to determine the relationship between age and dental maturity and develop an accurate method of age calculation. This study attempted to apply a neural network model for the statistical analysis of dental age estimation in children and evaluated its applicability. This study used 1196 panoramic radiographs of patients aged 3–16 years, and 996 and 200 were randomly classified into training and test sets, respectively. The dental maturity of the mandibular left teeth was evaluated using Demirjian's method, the neural network model using the backpropagation algorithm was derived using training sets, and the errors were evaluated using 100 radiographs of each male and female as test sets. In addition, multiple linear regression analysis was conducted on the same training set, and the error was calculated by applying it to the test set and comparing it with the error of the neural network model. In the neural network model, the mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean squared error (RMSE) were 0.589 and 0.783 in male subjects and 0.529 and 0.760 in female subjects, respectively. In the multiple linear regression model, the MAE and RMSE were 0.600 and 0.748 in male subjects and 0.566 and 0.789 in female subjects, respectively. When applying the neural network model to the statistical analysis of the dental developmental stage, the results were as accurate as those of conventional statistical analysis methods. This study’s approach is expected to be useful for estimating the ages of children.

Age estimation in children is a fundamental question in forensic medicine and in treatment planning. Estimation of age is required to answer a variety of legal questions like status of majority and criminal liability such as in child marriage, sexual harassment and in situations where birth data is lacking or doubted.Various methods have been proposed for assessment of the dental maturation, but the most widely applied method is by Demirijian et al. Cameriere’s method is also used to assess chronological age in children with open apex. With this background, the present study was conducted to estimate the dental age of the children from open and closed apex.240 digital panoramic radiograph of patients aged between 5 and 15 years were taken randomly Dental age estimation was performed using by Demirijians and Cameriere‘s method.The mean difference between the chronological and dental age was found to be 3.93 and 0.17 for Demirijian’s and Cameriere’s age estimation method respectively. In Demirijian’s method, the accuracy was found more in older females where as in Cameriere’s method the accuracy was almost same in all the age groups and the precision was seen in males than in females, on comparison Cameriere’s age estimation method was more accurate than Demirijian’s method.Dental maturity can be used to assess chronological age in children either by Demirijian’s or Cameriere’s method, Cameriere’s method was more accurate than Demirijian’s method.

About the Recent Chilean Immigration Phenomenon: A Scoping Review on Radiographic Methods for Dental Age Estimation in Children

The objective of this review was to identify original studies describing radiographic methods for dental age estimation applied in Chilean children, considering that it is a country with a long history of natural disasters and it has shown an unprecedented increase in the number of migrants in recent years, with significant percentages of individuals under 18 years of age. A scoping review was carried out following the methodology for the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping reviews and PRISMA guidelines. A specific search strategy was implemented in PubMed/Medline database, with complementary use of the Google Scholar website searching for full articles in English and Spanish. Five documents responded to the search objective, of which only 3 were published in refereed journals. Two documents focused their study on the maturation of upper and lower third molars, one on the maturation of the second and lower third molars, and two documents on the maturation of the seven mandibular teeth according to classical methodologies. The scarce existing literature, the almost absence of validated methods for the Chilean population, as well as the reported mass immigration phenomenon make a new and profound scientific research approach necessary for the application of updated methods.

Dental age estimation with two different methods in paediatric patients with hypothyroidism

ObjectiveThis case–control study aimed to evaluate dental age estimation in children with hypothyroidism using two different methods in order to contribute to the literature about the most accurate method. DesignIn the study, panoramic radiographs of 80 patients with hypothyroidism aged 5–13 years and 80 randomly selected age and sex–matched healthy patients were examined retrospectively. The Cameriere’s and the Nolla’s methods were used for the dental age estimation. Dental ages and their differences with chronological ages were compared according to group and sex. ResultsNo statistically significant difference in estimated dental age was found between the hypothyroidism and control groups using both methods (p > 0.05). Among all the males and females included in this study, the dental ages of the females calculated by Nolla’s method were significantly lower than those of the males according to the chronological ages (p < 0.05). For females, in both the hypothyroidism (p < 0.001) and control (p = 0.001) groups, the dental age estimated by Cameriere’s method was significantly closer to the chronological age compared to Nolla’s method, although there was no statistically significant difference for males. ConclusionAlthough the dental age of children with hypothyroidism showed similar results to that of healthy children, it is concluded that Cameriere’s method led to more accurate results than Nolla’s method in females for both healthy patients and patients with hypothyroidism.

Comparative evaluation of Demirjian's four teeth and alternate four teeth methods for the dental age estimation in children and adolescents of Varanasi region.

Age estimation is an important approach in the field of forensics and medical sciences to assists in clinical practice, medico-legal cases, and in criminal cases of judicial punishment. This study aim the applicability and comparison of four-teeth method and the alternate four-teeth method of Demirjian's approach among the Varanasi population. This is a cross-sectional prospective study on the population of Varanasi region children and adolescents. Four hundred and thirty-two panoramic images of children and adolescents (237 boys and 195 girls) aged 3-16 years, from the population of Varanasi region oriental was assessed using the four-teeth method and the alternate four-teeth method of Demirjian's approach, for the estimation of dental age. Pearson's two tailed test was applied to establish the correlation between chronological age and estimated dental age and Paired t-test was applied to check the statistical significance between mean chronological age and mean estimated dental age. The dental age of boys was overestimated by 0.39 ± 1.15 years (P < 0.001) and dental age was underestimated by - 0.34 ± 1.15 years (P < 0.001) among girls using the Demirjian's four teeth method. According to Demirjian's alternate four teeth method, the sample of boys overestimated the dental age by 0.76 ± 1.00 years (P < 0.001) with the statistically significant difference. While the sample of the girls had negligible overestimation of 0.04 ± 1.03 years (P = 0.580) with no statistically significant difference. Demirjian's four teeth method is better to estimate dental age in boys, whereas Demirjian's alternate four teeth method in girls of Varanasi region.

Dental age estimation in children that have undergone antineoplastic treatment.

Even though many studies have been performed to estimate DA in general population, limited research has been performed concerning medical compromised populations such as childhood cancer survivors. The aims of this case-control study were (a) to estimate dental age in a population of children that have undergone antineoplastic treatment with three different methods and (b) to compare it with the estimates from healthy subjects (control group). Seventy-three oncology patients and equal number of healthy control subjects from the Pediatric dentistry Department had their dental age estimated through recent orthopantograms using Dermijian's, Willems' and London Atlas methods. All OPGs randomly assessed by two calibrated observers. Mean age difference was calculated. Intraclass Correlation Coefficient was used to assess intra-observer reliability and the Concordance Correlation Coefficient used to assess inter-observer reliability. Concerning the CCS group 35 subjects (48%) were males and 38 (52%) were females, with an overall mean chronological age 10.95years, ranging between 5.37 and 15.83years. Intra- and inter-examiner reliability was exceptional for all methods. Mean DA differences in both groups and were not statistically sinificant regardless of the method used. The marginally lower values when males and females were investigated separately is basically due to the corresponding reduction of the sample size. An overestimation of DA observed in both groups by all methods was not significant. All three methods produced highly accurate comparable results when it comes to estimate the actual chronological age in both groups (CCS and control subjects) regardless of gender.

Application of Cameriere’s method for dental age estimation in children in South China

The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of Cameriere’s European formula for age estimation in children in South China and to adapt the formula to establish a more suitable formula for these children. Moreover, the performance of dental age estimation based on Cameriere’s method combining the developmental information of permanent teeth (PT) and third molar (TM) was also analysed. Orthopantomographs of 720 healthy children in Group A, and orthopantomographs of 320 children and 280 subadults in Group B were assessed. The samples of Group A were divided into training dataset 1 and test dataset 1, and the samples of Group B were also divided into training dataset 2 and test dataset 2. A South China-specific formula was established based on the training dataset 1, and the comparison of accuracy between the Cameriere’s European formula and the South China-specific formula was conducted with the test dataset 1. Additionally, a PT regression model, a TM regression model, and a combined regression model (PT + TM) were established based on the training dataset 2, and the performance of these three models were validated on the test dataset 2. The Cameriere’s European formula underestimated chronological age with a mean difference (ME) of −0.47 ± 1.11 years in males and −0.69 ± 1.19 years in females. However, the South China-specific formula underestimated chronological age, with a mean difference (ME) of −0.02 ± 0.71 years in males and −0.14 ± 0.73 years in females. Compared with PT model and TM model, the PT and TM combined model obtained the smallest root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.29 years in males and 0.93 years in females. In conclusion, the South China-specific formula was more suitable for assessing the dental age of children in South China, and the PT and TM combined model can improve the accuracy of dental age estimation in children. Dental age estimation in children affected by juvenile rheumatoid arthritis

Dental root calcification has proven to be a reliable biological evidence to estimate chronological age of children. The development of structures usually examined in the age estimation forensic practice (e.g. skeleton, teeth) is supposed to be influenced by diseases and nutritional, environmental, ethnic, and ultimately even socioeconomic factors. This research aims to study the age estimation in children affected by juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) with and without steroids treatment and compared with healthy subjects.Material and methodsDental age estimations based on 752 OPGs, 420 girls and 332 boys, aged from 3.3 to 15.99 years, were provided by applying Demirjian and Willems’ original methods. Of the whole sample, 103 individuals were affected by JRA and 40 received a continuous corticosteroid therapy, over 1 year long.ConclusionsWillems’ and Demirjian’s original methods, as methods commonly applied to estimate age for sub-adults with unremarkable medical history, can be used for medico-legal purposes to children affected by JRA. Willems’ method tended to underestimate age while Demirjian’s method resulted to be prone to overestimation for both healthy and JRA-affected children. JRA showed to have no influence on root calcification process even in children that received steroid treatment for 1 year or longer.

The Cameriere method using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans for dental age estimation in children

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the accuracy of Cameriere’s method based on normalized measurement of open apices of developing permanent teeth (xi ) and a number of teeth with closed apices (N0 ) in a sample of 121 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of children (60 males and 61 females), aged between 5 and 13 years from Krakow, Poland. Intra-class correlation coefficient on randomly selected 30 CBCT scans showed good to exceptional intra-observer, and inter-observer agreement of normalized open apices, while Kappa score showed an absolute agreement of the number of teeth with complete maturation. Dental age overestimated by 0.17 years (p = 0.120) and 0.18 years (p = 0.149) in males and females, respectively. The mean absolute errors between dental and chronological age of MAE between dental and chronological age of the complete sample were 0.73 years and 0.77 years in males and females, respectively. In conclusion, the present results support usage of Cameriere’s method for age estimation in Polish children in cases where CBCT scans are available and previously taken for a specific clinical indication and taking into account the more demanding procedure of measuring variables in a non-orthogonal projection of teeth compared to a panoramic image.

New regression models for dental age estimation in children using third molar maturity index: A preliminary analysis testing its usefulness as reliable age marker.

This paper concerns a method to estimate age in children using third molar maturity index (I3M) as independent variable and age as the dependent variable. Total of 1283 digital orthopantomograms (OPTs) of south Indian children aged between 7 and 22 years was included. Training sample of 933 OPTs was used to derive regression formulae, and validation sample of 350 OPTs used to verify accuracy of newly derived regression models. Regression analysis performed revealed that cubic function gave the best correlation between the studied variables. The models exhibited a high correlation coefficient for third molar development in both sexes (0.81 for boys and 0.84 for girls). When new models were verified, slight overestimation of dental age i.e., 0.2 years in boys and 0.13 years in girls was observed. Therefore, we conclude by recommending newly derived regression models as they provided better age predicting performances.

Comparison of the applicability of Demirjian and Willems methods for dental age estimation in children from the Thrace region, Turkey

ObjectivesDental age (DA) estimation is frequently used in the fields of orthodontics, paediatric dentistry and forensic science. DA estimation methods use radiology, and are reliable and non-destructive according to the literature. The Demirjian method is currently the most frequently used method, but recently, the Willems method was reported to have given results that were more accurate for some regions. The aim of this study was to detect and compare the accuracy of DA estimation methods for children and adolescents from the Thrace region, Turkey. The mean difference between the chronological age (CA) and the DA was selected as the primary outcome measure, and the difference range according to sex and age group was selected as the secondary outcome. Materials and methodsPanoramic radiographs (n=766) from a Thrace region population (380 males and 386 females) ranging in age from 6 to 14.99 years old were evaluated. DA was calculated using both the Demirjian and the Willems methods. ResultsThe mean CA of the subjects was 11.39±2.34 years (males=11.08±2.42 years and females=11.70±2.23 years). The mean difference values between the CA and the DA (CA–DA) using the Demirjian method and the Willems method were −0.87 and −0.17 for females, respectively, and −1.04 and −0.40 for males, respectively. For the different age groups, the differences between the CA and the DA calculated using the Demirjian method (CA–DA) ranged from −0.53 to −1.46 years for males and from −0.19 to −1.20 years for females, while the mean differences between the CA and the DA calculated by the Willems method (CA–DA) ranged from −0.19 to −0.50 years for males and from 0.20 to −0.49 years for females. ConclusionThe results suggest that the Willems method produced more accurate results for almost all age groups of both sexes, and it is better suited for children from the Thrace region of Turkey, than the Demirjian method.

Commonly used different dental age estimation methods in children and adolescents

Age is an important factor for all the human beings whether it is living or dead. It is useful for day-to-day life works such as educational purpose, governmental purpose, job purpose, medical purpose, crime investigation, court of law, clinical practices, research, and reconstructive identification purpose in case of dead individuals. Of many procedures for age estimation such as chronological age, bone age, mental age, and others, dental age estimation is considered to be an important procedure as tooth development shows less inconstancy than other developmental features or in relation to chronological age and also teeth are most tough and resilient part of the skeleton. High survivability of teeth exposed to severe physical factors, such as fire and water immersion, make assessment of developing teeth the method of choice in forensic age estimation. Age estimation using teeth can be divided into three categories of age groups: prenatal, neonatal, and early postnatal period; children and adolescents; and adults. Children are defined as the human beings from birth to puberty and adolescents as from puberty to approximately age of 20 years. Hence, the motive is to overview for dental age estimation in children and adolescents from different techniques.

Dental age is considered to be vital as tooth development shows less variability than other developmental features and also low variability in relation to chronological age so, it is considered to be vital in establishing the age of an individual. Every person of all ages whether they are neonate, adults, or adolescent got right to be identified during death or when they are alive, and with the help of forensic odontology now it has become easier to estimate the age in very less time by various methods. However, different methods are associated with varying degrees of uncertainty and precision. From a statistical-methodological point of view, a combination of different measurement methods and a more conscious use of the relevant statistical methodology may provide more reliable estimates and better quantification. This review will deal with various aspects of age estimation such as morphological, biochemical, and radiographical methods and its scope and limitation.

Novel age estimation model based on development of permanent teeth compared with classical approach and other modern data mining methods

In order to analyze and improve the dental age estimation in children and adolescents for forensic purposes, 22 age estimation methods were compared to a sample of 976 orthopantomographs (662 males, 314 females) of healthy Czech children and adolescents aged between 2.7 and 20.5 years. All methods are compared in terms of the accuracy and complexity and are based on various data mining methods or on simple mathematical operations. The winning method is presented in detail.The comparison showed that only three methods provide the best accuracy while remaining user-friendly. These methods were used to build a tabular multiple linear regression model, an M5P tree model and support vector machine model with first-order polynomial kernel. All of them have mean absolute error (MAE) under 0.7 years for both males and females. The other well-performing data mining methods (RBF neural network, K-nearest neighbors, Kstar, etc.) have similar or slightly better accuracy, but they are not user-friendly as they require computing equipment and the implementation as computer program. The lowest estimation accuracy provides the traditional model based on age averages (MAE under 0.96 years). Different relevancy of various teeth for the age estimation was found. This finding also explains the lowest accuracy of the traditional averages-based model.In this paper, a technique for missing data replacement for the cases with missing teeth is presented in detail as well as the constrained tabular multiple regression model. Also, we provide free age prediction software based on this wining model.

The reliability of Cameriere's method in Turkish children: A preliminary report

Dental age estimation in children is an important issue both legally and medically. Currently, however, there is a lack of contemporary dental age estimation standards for a Turkish population. This study assessed the accuracy of Cameriere's method by examining the panoramic radiographs of 573 healthy Turkish children between the ages of 8 and 15 years. Radiographs of the left permanent developing mandibular teeth, except wisdom teeth, were evaluated. All subjects were divided into 7 groups according to their chronological age. The Intra-class Correlation Coefficient was used to determine the intra- and inter-observer agreement error. A comparison of the distributions of estimation errors among age groups was performed using the Nemenyi test. There were no significant differences between inter-observer (p=0.352), and intra-observer readings after 2 weeks (p=0.275 and p=0.273, respectively). The dental age was underestimated when using Cameriere's method with a mean difference of −0.35 years (−0.24 years for girls and −0.47 years for boys). The median values of the differences between dental and chronological age were −0.44 years in boys (range: −3.70, 4.06) and −0.21 years in girls (range: −2.74, 3.29). In addition, the differences between dental and chronological ages in the different age groups decreased with increasing chronological age. Results from the Nemenyi test implied that Cameriere's method is more accurate for girls than for boys in this cohort of a Turkish population.
