Densities and viscosities were determined for the binary systems of m-cresol with aniline, N-methylaniline, N, N-dimethylaniline, N-ethylaniline, and N, N-diethylaniline at five different temperatures. From the experimental results, the excess volume, excess viscosity, excess molar free energy of activation of flow, excess partial molar volume, and partial molar volumes were calculated. Also various thermodynamic parameters of activation of flow were calculated from the dependence of viscosity on temperature. The deviations from ideality of thermodynamic and transport functions are explained on the basis of molecular interactions between the components of the mixture.

Densities of binary liquid mixtures near their consolute points

Starting from a formula of Gaw and Scott, we show by a scaling argument that the volume–composition isotherm of a binary liquid mixture at its consolute temperature should be of the same algebraic degree at the consolute point as the volume–composition coexistence curve and, by continuity, tangent to it there. Our data on 2,4-lutidine + water, and our data together with those of Woermann and Sarholz on isobutyric acid + water, show conspicuously the non-classical vanishing of the curvature of the volume–composition critical isotherm at the consolute point. The predicted tangency of the critical isotherm and coexistence curve is confirmed for isobutyric acid + water within the uncertainties in the estimates.

Densities and excess molar volumes of binary and ternary melts of MgCl2, CaCl2and AlkCl

Densities of binary liquid mixtures of AlkCl + CaCl2 and AlkCl + MgCl2 have been measured. Molar excess volumes VEm of mixing are given. In the CaCl2-system the excess volumes are always positive, while both positive and negative excess volumes are always positive, while both positive and negative excess volumes are found in the MgCl2-systems. The excess volume curves show pronounced maxima near the composition 33 mol % MgCl2 in the systems KCl+, RbCl+, and CsCl + MgCl2. It is suggested that VEm can be separated into two principal parts. One part is positive and associated with changes in ionic interactions (the Coulomb interaction); the other part is negative and is attributed to the effect of changing the covalent bridging interaction in liquid magnesium chloride when mixing the two components. Densities of six mixtures in each of the two ternary systems NaCl + CaCl2+ MgCl2 and KCl + CaCl2+ MgCl2 have also been measured and the excess volumes determined for each mixture. These values are compared with the excess volumes calculated from the component binaries. Densities of several binary and ternary liquid chloride mixtures of potential interest have been measured as a part of an investigation of the physicochemical properties of the magnesium chloride electrolyte for the electrowinning of magnesium.

Thermodynamics of Binary Liquid Mixtures Containing Cyclohexane Part 1

Ultrasonic velocities in and densities of binary liquid mixtures of benzene, carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulphide, P-xylene, m-xylene, o-xylene toluene, dioxan and tetralin with cyclohexane as common component have been determined at room temperature, The nature of the excess compressibility and excess volume of these mixtures has been discussed in the light of the recently developed molecular theories of solutions. The agreement between the calculated and experimental excess functions has been found to be good in all cases excepting the system cyclohexane-toluene. The nature of the velocity ν s mole fraction curves has been explained by extending the concept of available volume and intermolecular free-length to liquid mixtures.
