Dual physical stimuli fluorescence response of an α-cyanostilbene derivative for dynamic information storage

α-cyanostilbene derivatives, known as AIE molecules, have the potential to serve as optical recorders and vapor sensor by altering the molecular aggregation and / or stacking models. Despite the significant scientific and technological importance of the correlation between molecular stacking modes and modulated optical properties, relevant research remains scarce. Herein, two thermodynamically stable crystalline phase (BCr and GCr) were found for a biphenyl-based cyanostilbenic compound, DSB-SQ, condensed from its solution. Uniquely, the BCr demonstrated reversible mechanochromism and irreversible thermalchromism, whereas GCr remained unaffected by exposure to light, heat, grinding, etc. The discoloration process was correlated with the variation of local dipole coupling modes during the phase transition, leading to a significant change in π-π overlap and delocalization of excited states. Finally, the BCr was doped with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to prepare a composite membrane with dynamic information storage and encryption function.

Influence of Excited-State Delocalization on Singlet Fission: Tuning Triplet-Pair-State Emission in Thin Films

The coherent distribution of an electronic excitation over multiple organic molecules in the solid state, namely excited-state delocalization, plays an important role in photophysical processes such as singlet fission. However, experimental studies of the influence of excited-state delocalization on singlet fission have been challenging mainly for two reasons. First, there is no easy way of measuring the excited-state delocalization, and second, tracking the resulting changes for singlet fission is demanding due to the triplet-pair state, which is a crucial intermediate in singlet fission, being an optically dark state and hence hard to access experimentally. Binary systems offer a way to adapt the growth conditions of a singlet fission material, which enables tuning of the excited-state delocalization, possibly due to the impact of structural disorder on exciton localization. By varying the growth conditions, we demonstrate that emission from the triplet-pair state via Herzberg–Teller coupling is detectable in films with low growth rates of the singlet fission material, while the triplet-pair state shows no luminescence in the other cases due to triplet dissociation outcompeting the luminescent decay. With this we find that triplet-pair state luminescence correlates with higher excited-state delocalization.

Packing-induced selectivity switching in molecular nanoparticle photocatalysts for hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide production.

Molecular packing controls optoelectronic properties in organic molecular nanomaterials. Here we report a donor-acceptor organic molecule (2,6-bis(4-cyanophenyl)-4-(9-phenyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)pyridine-3,5-dicarbonitrile) that exhibits two aggregate states in aqueous dispersions: amorphous nanospheres and ordered nanofibres with π-π molecular stacking. The nanofibres promote sacrificial photocatalytic H2 production (31.85 mmol g-1 h-1) while the nanospheres produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (3.20 mmol g-1 h-1 in the presence of O2). This is the first example of an organic photocatalyst that can be directed to produce these two different solar fuels simply by changing the molecular packing. These different packings affect energy band levels, the extent of excited state delocalization, the excited state dynamics, charge transfer to O2 and the light absorption profile. We use a combination of structural and photophysical measurements to understand how this influences photocatalytic selectivity. This illustrates the potential to achieve multiple photocatalytic functionalities with a single organic molecule by engineering nanomorphology and solid-state packing.

Circularly Polarized Light Probes Excited-State Delocalization in Rectangular Ladder-type Pentaphenyl Helices.

Ladder-type pentaphenyl chromophores have a rigid, planar π-system and show bright fluorescence featuring pronounced vibrational structure. Such moieties are ideal for studying interchromophoric interactions and delocalization of electronic excitations. We report the synthesis of helical polymers with a rigid square structure based on spiro-linked ladder-type pentaphenyl units. The variation of circular dichroism with increasing chain length provides direct evidence for delocalization of electronic excitations over at least 10 monomeric units. The change in the degree of circular polarization of the fluorescence across the vibronic side bands shows that vibrational motion can localize the excitation dynamically to almost one single unit through breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. The dynamic conversion between delocalized and localized excited states provides a new paradigm for interpreting circular dichroism in helical polymers such as proteins and polynucleic acids.

Pyrene-Decoration of a Chromium(0) Tris(diisocyanide) Enhances Excited State Delocalization: A Strategy to Improve the Photoluminescence of 3d6 Metal Complexes.

There is a long-standing interest in iron(II) complexes that emit from metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited states, analogous to ruthenium(II) polypyridines. The 3d6 electrons of iron(II) are exposed to a relatively weak ligand field, rendering nonradiative relaxation of MLCT states via metal-centered excited states undesirably efficient. For isoelectronic chromium(0), chelating diisocyanide ligands recently provided access to very weak MLCT emission in solution at room temperature. Here, we present a concept that boosts the luminescence quantum yield of a chromium(0) isocyanide complex by nearly 2 orders of magnitude, accompanied by a significant increase of the MLCT lifetime. Pyrene units in the diisocyanide ligand backbone lead to an enlarged π-conjugation system and to a strongly delocalized MLCT state, from which nonradiative relaxation is less dominant despite a sizable redshift of the emission. While the pyrene moiety is electronically coupled to the core of the chromium(0) complex in the excited state, UV-vis absorption and 2D NMR spectroscopy show that this is not the case in the ground state. Luminescence lifetimes and quantum yields for our pyrenyl-decorated chromium(0) complex exhibit an unusual bell-shaped dependence on solvent polarity, indicative of two counteracting effects governing the MLCT deactivation. These two effects are identified as predominant deactivation either through an energetically nearby lying metal-centered state in the most apolar solvents, or alternatively via direct nonradiative relaxation to the ground state following the energy gap law in more polar solvents. This is the first example of a 3d6 MLCT emitter to benefit from an increased π-conjugation network.

Time-Resolved Structural Dynamics of Extended π-Electron Porphyrin Nanoring

Molecular structure design inspired by naturally occurring light harvesting systems has been intensely pursued over the last couple of decades. Interesting new structures include the π- conjugated porphyrin nanorings, which show promising features such as ultrafast excited-state delocalization, leading to suppressed radiative rates, superradiance with increasing temperature and energy transfer times comparable to their natural counterparts. An mportant question to be addressed in such systems is the role and time scale of structural motions and how they affect excited-state delocalization. Here it is shown that porphyrin nanorings which are not rigidified by a template are structurally heterogeneous in the ground state and evolve dynamically on a tens of picoseconds timescale. In the excited state a structural relaxation of the porphyrin nanorings is observed, on a picosecond timescale. Furthermore ultrafast excitation delocalization is observed, by anisotropy measurements, being insensitive to structural motions of the nanorings.

Probing Exciton Delocalization in Organic Semiconductors: Insight from Time-Resolved Electron Paramagnetic Resonance and Magnetophotoselection Experiments

Delocalization of excited states of organic semiconductors is directly related to their efficiency in devices. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy provides unique capabilities in this respect because of its high spectral resolution and capability to probe the geometry and extent of excitons. Using magnetophotoselection experiments, the mode of exciton delocalization, along the backbone or parallel to the π-π stacking direction of the conjugated polymers, can be revealed. We demonstrate the robustness of this approach by applying it to building blocks of a prototypical conjugated polymer showing a symmetry of their excited states being far from ideal for this experiment. This renders magnetophotoselection superior to other approaches because it is applicable to a wealth of other organic semiconductors. The insight gained into exciton delocalization is crucial to the structure-function relationship of organic semiconductors and directly relevant for developing highly efficient materials.

Local protein solvation drives direct down-conversion in phycobiliprotein PC645 via incoherent vibronic transport

The mechanisms controlling excitation energy transport (EET) in light-harvesting complexes remain controversial. Following the observation of long-lived beats in 2D electronic spectroscopy of PC645, vibronic coherence, the delocalization of excited states between pigments supported by a resonant vibration, has been proposed to enable direct excitation transport from the highest-energy to the lowest-energy pigments, bypassing a collection of intermediate states. Here, we instead show that for phycobiliprotein PC645 an incoherent vibronic transport mechanism is at play. We quantify the solvation dynamics of individual pigments using ab initio quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) nuclear dynamics. Our atomistic spectral densities reproduce experimental observations ranging from absorption and fluorescence spectra to the timescales and selectivity of down-conversion observed in transient absorption measurements. We construct a general model for vibronic dimers and establish the parameter regimes of coherent and incoherent vibronic transport. We demonstrate that direct down-conversion in PC645 proceeds incoherently, enhanced by large reorganization energies and a broad collection of high-frequency vibrations. We suggest that a similar incoherent mechanism is appropriate across phycobiliproteins and represents a potential design principle for nanoscale control of EET.

Preferential Charge Generation at Aggregate Sites in Narrow Band Gap Infrared Photoresponsive Polymer Semiconductors

AbstractInfrared organic photodetector materials are investigated using transient absorption spectroscopy, demonstrating that ultrafast charge generation assisted by polymer aggregation is essential to compensate for the energy gap law, which dictates that excited state lifetimes decrease as the band gap narrows. Short sub‐picosecond singlet exciton lifetimes are measured in a structurally related series of infrared‐absorbing copolymers that consist of alternating cyclopentadithiophene electron‐rich “push” units and strong electron‐deficient “pull” units, including benzothiadiazole, benzoselenadiazole, pyridalselenadiazole, or thiadiazoloquinoxaline. While the ultrafast lifetimes of excitons localized on individual polymer chains suggest that charge carrier generation will be inefficient, high detectivity for polymer:PC71BM infrared photodetectors is measured in the 0.6 < λ < 1.5 µm range. The photophysical processes leading to charge generation are investigated by performing a global analysis on transient absorption data of blended polymer:PC71BM films. In these blends, charge carriers form primarily at polymer aggregate sites on the ultrafast time scale (within our instrument response), leaving quickly decaying single‐chain excitons unquenched. The results have important implications for the further development of organic infrared optoelectronic devices, where targeting processes such as excited state delocalization over aggregates may be necessary to mitigate losses to ultrafast exciton decay as materials with even lower band gaps are developed.

Excitation Energy Delocalization and Transfer to Guests within MII4L6 Cage Frameworks.

We have prepared a series of MII4L6 tetrahedral cages containing one or the other of two distinct BODIPY moieties, as well as mixed cages that contain both BODIPY chromophores. The photophysical properties of these cages and their fullerene-encapsulated adducts were studied in depth. Upon cage formation, the charge-transfer character exhibited by the bis(aminophenyl)-BODIPY subcomponents disappeared. Strong excitonic interactions were instead observed between at least two BODIPY chromophores along the edges of the cages, arising from the electronic delocalization through the metal centers. This excited-state delocalization contrasts with previously reported cages. All cages exhibited the same progression from an initial bright singlet state (species I) to a delocalized dark state (species II), driven by interactions between the transition dipoles of the ligands, and subsequently into geometrically relaxed species III. In the case of cages loaded with C60 or C70 fullerenes, ultrafast host-to-guest electron transfer was observed to compete with the excitonic interactions, short-circuiting the I → II → III sequence.

Relating Chromophoric and Structural Disorder in Conjugated Polymers.

The optoelectronic properties of amorphous conjugated polymers are sensitive to the details of the conformational disorder, and spectroscopy provides the means for structural characterization of the fragments of the chain that interact with light-"chromophores". A faithful interpretation of spectroscopic conformational signatures, however, presents a theoretical challenge. Here we investigate the relationship between the ground-state optical gaps, the properties of the excited states, and the structural features of chromophores of a single molecule poly(3-hexyl)-thiophene (P3HT) using quantum-classical atomistic simulations. Our results demonstrate that chromophoric disorder arises through the interplay between excited-state delocalization and electron-hole polarization, controlled by the torsional disorder introduced by side chains. Within this conceptual framework, we predict and explain the counterintuitive spectral behavior of P3HT, a red-shifted absorption, despite shortening of chromophores, with increasing temperature. This discussion introduces the concept of disorder-induced separation of charges in amorphous conjugated polymers.

Minimalistic Ditopic Ligands: An α-S,N-Donor-Substituted Alkyne as Effective Intermetallic Conjugation Linker.

The capability of donor-substituted alkynes to link different metal ions in a side-on carbon donor-chelate coordination mode is extended from the donor centers S and P to the second period element N. The complex [Tp'W(CO)2 {η(2) -C2 (S)(NHBn)}] (Tp'=hydrido-tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate, Bn=benzyl) bearing a terminal sulfur atom and a secondary amine substituent is accessible by a metal-template synthesis. Subsequent deprotonation allowed the formation of remarkably stable heterobimetallic complexes with the [(η(5) -C5 H5 )Ru(PPh3 )] and the [Ir(ppy)2 ] moiety. Electrochemical and spectroscopic investigations (cyclic voltammetry, IR, UV/Vis, luminescence, EPR), as well as DFT calculations, and X-ray structure determinations of the W-Ru complex in two oxidation states reveal a strong metal-metal coupling but also a limited delocalization of excited states.

A Structural Model for a Self-Assembled Nanotube Provides Insight into Its Exciton Dynamics.

The design and synthesis of functional self-assembled nanostructures is frequently an empirical process fraught with critical knowledge gaps about atomic-level structure in these noncovalent systems. Here, we report a structural model for a semiconductor nanotube formed via the self-assembly of naphthalenediimide-lysine (NDI-Lys) building blocks determined using experimental 13C–13C and 13C–15N distance restraints from solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance supplemented by electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction data. The structural model reveals a two-dimensional-crystal-like architecture of stacked monolayer rings each containing ∼50 NDI-Lys molecules, with significant π-stacking interactions occurring both within the confines of the ring and along the long axis of the tube. Excited-state delocalization and energy transfer are simulated for the nanotube based on time-dependent density functional theory and an incoherent hopping model. Remarkably, these calculations reveal efficient energy migration from the excitonic bright state, which is in agreement with the rapid energy transfer within NDI-Lys nanotubes observed previously using fluorescence spectroscopy.

A Molecular Nanotube with Three-Dimensional π-Conjugation.

A π-conjugated twelve-porphyrin tube is synthesized in 32 % yield by a template-directed coupling reaction that joins together six porphyrin dimers, forming twelve new C=C bonds. The nanotube has two bound templates, enclosing an internal volume of approximately 4.5 nm3. Its UV/Vis/NIR absorption and fluorescence spectra resemble those of a previously reported six-porphyrin ring, but are red-shifted by approximately 300 cm−1, reflecting increased conjugation. Ultrafast fluorescence spectroscopy demonstrates extensive excited-state delocalization. Transfer of electronic excitation from an initially formed state polarized in the direction of the nanotube axis (z axis) to an excited state polarized in the xy plane occurs within 200 fs, resulting in a negative fluorescence anisotropy on excitation at 742 nm.

How far do electrons delocalize?

Electron delocalization is central to chemical bonding, but it is also a fundamentally nonclassical and nonintuitive quantum mechanical phenomenon. Tools to quantify and visualize electron delocalization help to understand, teach, and predict chemical reactivity. We develop a new approach to quantify and visualize electron delocalization in real space. Our electron delocalization range function EDR (r⃗;u) quantifies the degree to which electrons at point r⃗ in a calculated wavefunction delocalize over length scale u. Its predictions are physically reasonable. For example, EDR (r⃗;u=0.25 bohr ) is close to one at points r⃗ in the cores of first-row atoms, consistent with the localization of core electrons to ~0.25 bohr. EDR (r⃗;u=1 bohr ) is close to one at points r⃗ in typical covalent bonds, consistent with electrons delocalizing over the length of the bond. Our approach provides a rich representation of atomic shell structure; covalent and ionic bonding; the delocalization of excited states, defects, and solvated electrons; metallic and insulating systems; and bond stretching and strong correlation.

Photoinduced Charge Generation in a Molecular Bulk Heterojunction Material

Understanding the charge generation dynamics in organic photovoltaic bulk heterojunction (BHJ) blends is important for providing the necessary guidelines to improve overall device efficiency. Despite more than 15 years of experimental and theoretical studies, a universal picture describing the generation and recombination processes operating in organic photovoltaic devices is still being forged. We report here the results of ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy measurements of charge photogeneration and recombination processes in a high-performing solution-processed molecular BHJ. For comparison, we also studied a high-performing polymer-based BHJ material. We find that the majority of charge carriers in both systems are generated on <100 fs time scales and posit that excited state delocalization is responsible for the ultrafast charge transfer. This initial delocalization is consistent with the fundamental uncertainty associated with the photon absorption process (in the visible, λ/4π > 30 nm) and is comparable with the phase-separated domain size. In addition, exciton diffusion to charge-separating heterojunctions is observed at longer times (1-500 ps). Finally, charge generation in pure films of the solution processed molecule was studied. Polarization anisotropy measurements clearly demonstrate that the optical properties are dominated by molecular (Frenkel) exictons and delocalized charges are promptly produced (t < 100 fs).

Photophysical Property of Photoactive Molecules with Multibranched Push-Pull Structures

The structure-property characteristics of a series of newly synthesized intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) compounds, single-branch monomer with triphenylmethane as electron donor and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole as acceptor, the corresponding two-branch dimer and three-branch trimer, have been investigated by means of steady-state and femtosecond time-resolved stimulated emission fluorescence depletion (FS TR-SEP FD) techniques in different polar solvents. The TD-DFT calculations are further performed to explain the observed ICT properties. The interpretation of the experimental results is based on the comparative studies of the series of compounds which have increased amount of identical branch moiety. The similarity of the absorption and fluorescence spectra as well as strong solvent-dependence of the spectral properties for the three compounds reveal that the excited state of the dimer and trimer are nearly the same with that of the monomer, which may localize on one branch. It is found that polar excited state emerged through multidimensional intramolecular charge transfer from the donating moiety to the acceptor upon excitation, and quickly relaxed to one branch before emission. Even so, the red-shift in the absorption and emission spectra and decreased fluorescence radiative lifetime with respect to their monomer counterpart still suggest some extent delocalization of excited state in the dimer and trimer upon excitation. The similar behavior of their excited ICT state is demonstrated by FS TR-SEP FD measurements, and shows that the trimer has the largest charge-separate extent in all studied three samples. Finally, steady-state excitation anisotropy measurements has further been carried out to estimate the nature of the optical excitation and the mechanism of energy redistribution among the branches, where no plateau through the ICT band suggests the intramolecular excitation transfer process between the branches in dimer and trimer.

Polymorphic and mechanochromic luminescence modulation in the highly emissive dicyanodistyrylbenzene crystal: secondary bonding interaction in molecular stacking assembly

Understanding the role of self-assembly and electronic interactions of constituent molecules in determining optoelectronic properties of a molecular solid is a fundamental and essential issue in material science. Particularly, the correlation between the molecular stacking mode and modulated optical properties has barely been established in spite of its scientific and technological importance. Herein, we present dicyanodistyrylbenzene-based highly luminescent crystals which uniquely exhibit polymorphism and mechanochromism. In these materials, various secondary bonding interactions (local dipole interaction, C–H⋯π interaction, and C–H⋯N hydrogen bond) play key roles in molecular stacking assembly, as well as in polymorphic and mechanochromic behaviors. The two different polymorphic phases of dicyanodistyrylbenzene crystal were correlated to the different modes of local dipole coupling, which caused a substantial alternation of π–π overlap and excited state delocalization to give differently colored fluorescence emission. Most uniquely, the phase transformation between those crystalline phases was effected through thermal and mechanical processes. We have comprehensively carried out in-depth and systematic optical, structural, and photophysical investigations to establish unambiguous structure–property relationships.

Nonradiative Decay Mechanisms in DNA Model Systems

Experimental and theoretical research into excited electronic states of DNA has flourished during the past decade. The dynamics of excited states in monomeric nucleobases and defined-sequence oligo- and polynucleotides can now be routinely observed by ultrafast laser spectroscopy on time scales of hundreds of femtoseconds and beyond. Powerful quantum chemical methods are pinpointing the coupled nuclear and electronic motions responsible for nonradiative decay with unprecedented detail. For single bases, a fully microscopic description of nonradiative decay is almost at hand, and experiment and quantum dynamics calculations are increasingly congruent about deactivation events, including the bifurcation of excited-state populations on ultrafast time scales. For nucleobase multimers, there is evidence of both slower and faster rates of nonradiative decay than those in single bases, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood due to uncertainty about excited-state delocalization and energy transfer.
