T HE AWARENESS AND application of research findings in nursing practice continue to be lacking in many health care organizations. It is more important than ever to ensure that nurses deliver quality patient care in the most efficient manner possible. Studies reported in the research literature have provided results that could be implemented in a variety of inpatient and outpatient areas. Despite the abundance of research that could be applied to practice, findings from many studies are never used. Common reasons identified by practicing nurses include limited access to research reports, inability to critically evaluate research studies, lack of time, inability to implement change, and lack of support from administrative personnel (Funk, Champagne, Wiese, & Tornquist, 1991a, 1991b; Miller & Messenger, 1978; Nolan, Larson, McGuire, Hill, & Hailer, 1994; Walczak, McGuire, Haisfield, & Beezley, 1994).
