Delhi Rape Case

A twenty-three years old female medical student was gang raped on December 16, 2012 in a public bus in Delhi, India. The woman, whose name was not revealed due to Indian laws, was taken to the Safdarjang Hospital where she had gone through multiple surgeries and was placed on ventilation. She was sent to Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore on December 26 for the transplantation of her damaged organs but unfortunately she was died while undergoing emergency treatment on December 29.

Sustainable Bus Rapid Transit initiatives in India: The role of decisive leadership and strong institutions

The Government of India’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission is instrumental in providing policy, financial, and institutional support to meet the growing needs of urban agglomerations (UAs). In addition to discussing the recently implemented Delhi Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and the Indore Busway project, which served to renew the nation’s interest in public transport, this work presents a case brief from three UAs for which the author prepared detailed project reports on the BRT systems. This paper highlights the role of leadership and institutions in the successful completion of feasibility studies (Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada), the process delays (Hyderabad), planned implementation (Visakhapatnam), full-scale operationalization (Indore), and the problems caused by quick deployment (Delhi), the last of which has led to a national debate on BRT viability in India. In conclusion, this work brings to the fore the felt need for a decisive leadership and strong institutions in evolving sustainable public transport solutions.

Air flow through a non-airconditioned bus with open windows

Open window buses without air-conditioning are a major mode of urban and inter-city transport in most countries. High occupancy combined with hot and humid conditions makes travel in these buses quite uncomfortable. In this study air flow through a bus has been studied that could be the basis for low cost and eco-friendly methods of increasing passenger comfort and possibly reduce drag. The aerodynamics of such a road vehicle has not been studied as previous investigations have been confined to vehicles with closed windows that present a smooth exterior to air flow. Using a 1:25 scaled Perspex model of an urban bus in Delhi, flow visualization was performed in a water channel. The Reynolds numbers were one-tenth of a real bus moving at 10 m/s. Smoke and tuft visualizations were also performed on an urban bus at 40 km/h. Numerical simulations were performed at the actual Reynolds number. Even though there were Reynolds number differences, the broad features were similar. Air enters the bus from the rear windows, moves to the front (relative to the bus) and exits from the front windows. Inside air velocity relative to the bus is about one-tenth of the free-stream velocity. The flow is highly three-dimensional and unsteady.

Simulation of flywheel energy storage system for city buses

This paper reports on computer simulation of flywheel energy storage systems for city buses. In digital simulation of the flywheel energy storage system, the objective is to assess the economic advantage obtainable from using such a system. Actual data pertaining to a particular Delhi bus route have been collected and used in this simulation study. In the second part, an efficient electronic hardware scheme to start the flywheel and traction machines, which has been designed, fabricated and tested in our laboratory, is described. In this scheme, a low frequency current has been derived from an inverter fed from a three-phase uncontrolled rectifier to start the commutatorless d.c. motors. Commutation is achieved by using a capacitor and two auxiliary thyristors, whose ratings could be a fraction of the full machine ratings, as they are needed during starting only. The frequency of the inverter output is controlled by a function generator. For successful commutation in all modes of operation, a capacitor voltage sensor circuit has been employed.
