Atherosclerotic response of aggressive and passive groups of chickens to a cholesterol enriched diet.

SummaryA group of male chickens exhibiting “aggressive'”and another group exhibiting “passive'”behavior were studied during and after a period of high cholesterol and fat feeding. Although the “aggressive'”groups exhibited more pronounced evidences of androgen activity, their plasma and aortic cholesterol contents were perhaps less than those of the “passive'”group. The extent and degree of coronary atherosclerosis was the same in the two groups.

The degree of coronary atherosclerosis in bilaterally oophorectomized women.

The degree of coronary atherosclerosis in 49 hearts obtained from bilaterally oophorectomized women was compared with the degree of sclerosis in 600 hearts from women and in 600 hearts from men of comparable ages. On the average the degree of coronary sclerosis in the bilaterally oophorectomized women was greater than in control women but less than in control men.

Factors in the production of coronary artery disease.

The recent tendency to accept the syndromes of coronary artery disease as an indication of the presence or relative absence of coronary atherosclerosis in the living patient is open to serious objection. The production of these syndromes would appear to depend, not so much on the degree of coronary atherosclerosis, as on the presence of extraneous factors which precipitate occlusion. Of these factors, hemorrhage into atherosclerotic plaques is of major importance. The etiology of this lesion, and the manner in which it precipitates occlusion, are reviewed.
