Chemotaxis-mediated degradation of PAHs and heterocyclic PAHs under low-temperature stress by Pseudomonas fluorescens S01: Insights into the mechanisms of biodegradation and cold adaptation

As wellknown persistent contaminants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heterocyclic polyaromatic hydrocarbons (Heterocyclic PAHs)'s fates in cryogenic environments are remains uncertain. Herein, strain S01 was identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens, a novel bacterium tolerant to low temperature and capable of degrading PAHs and heterocyclic PAHs. Strain S01 exhibited growth at 5–40 ℃ and degradation rate of mixed PAHs and heterocyclic PAHs reached 52% under low-temperature. Through comprehensive metabolomic, genomic, and transcriptomic analyses, we reconstructed the biodegradation pathway for PAHs and heterocyclic PAHs in S01 while investigating its response to low temperature. Further experiments involving deletion and replacement of methyl-accepting chemotaxis protein (MCP) confirmed its crucial role in enabling strain S01's adaptation to dual stress of low temperature and pollutants. Additionally, our analysis revealed that MCP was upregulated under cold stress which enhanced strain S01's motility capabilities leading to increased biofilm formation. The establishment of biofilm promoted preservation of distinct cellular membrane stability, thereby enhancing energy metabolism. Consequently, this led to heightened efficiency in pollutant degradation and improved cold resistance capabilities. Our findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the environmental fate of both PAHs and heterocyclic PAHs under low-temperature conditions while also shedding light on cold adaptation mechanism employed by strain S01.

Persistent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons removal from sewage sludge-amended soil through phytoremediation combined with solid-state ligninolytic fungal cultures

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widely present in the environment, causing increasing concern because of their impact on soil health, food safety and potential health risks. Four bioremediation strategies were examined to assess the dissipation of PAHs in agricultural soil amended with sewage sludge over a period of 120 days: soil-sludge natural attenuation (SS); phytoremediation using maize (Zea mays L.) (PSS); mycoremediation (MR) separately using three white-rot fungi (Pleurotus ostreatus, Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Irpex lacteus); and plant-assisted mycoremediation (PMR) using a combination of maize and fungi. In the time frame of the experiment, mycoremediation using P. chrysosporium (MR-PH) exhibited a significantly higher (P < 0.05) degradation of total PAHs compared to the SS and PSS treatments, achieving a degradation rate of 52 %. Both the SS and PSS treatments demonstrated a lower degradation rate of total PAHs, with removal rates of 18 % and 32 %, respectively. The PMR treatments showed the highest removal rates of total PAHs at the end of the study, with degradation rates of 48–60 %. In the shoots of maize, only low- and medium-molecular-weight PAHs were found in both the PSS and PMR treatments. The calculated translocation and bioconversion factors always showed values < 1. The analysed enzymatic activities were higher in the PMR treatments compared to other treatments, which can be positively related to the higher degradation of PAHs in the soil.

Degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in oil deodorizer distillates: Kinetics, degradation product identification and toxicity

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with strong carcinogenicity can cause great threat to human health. However, limited research has focused on the degradation of PAHs in oil deodorizer distillates (ODDs). In this study, E. coli expressing plasmid PodAB were applied in ODD samples to degrade PAHs and compared with white rot fungi (WRF). Prediction model for reactive sites of PAHs and the toxicity of degradation products were developed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR), respectively. The results indicated that the degradation rate of PAHs in ODD reached up to 59.28% using E. coli with the co-expression of pBRCD, which provided the electron carrier. The prediction results using nucleophilic index was consistent with the identification results of GC-MS, which may be more suitable for predicting the PAH oxidation products. Moreover, the R2 of developed QSAR reached 0.8976 for the correlation coefficient between predicted and observed toxicity value, which can be applied to predict the toxicity of degradation products. This work proposes a potential tool for PAH removal in ODD as well as a simple method for predicting PAH oxidation products as well as their toxicity.

Evaluation of the content and degradation rates of PAHs in biochars, in terms of assessing the environmental risks of their application for soil remediation

The growing worldwide practice of biochar application as soil ameliorants, as well as adsorbents for remediation of soil contaminated with oil products and heavy metals, can lead to an increase the risk of environmental pollution by pyrolysis by-products. One of the most dangerous components of biochars is polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are inevitably formed during the production of pyrogenic material. In this work, biochars obtained from various plant materials (millet, corn, willow, linden) under different pyrolysis temperatures were tested for the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The total content of PAHs in the studied samples ranged from 8.49 to 221.21 µg/kg, which does not exceed the limit concentrations established by the International Biochar Initiative. At the same time, polynuclear hydrocarbons with high carcinogenic and immunotoxic properties are found in the composition of biochars. A natural question arises about the effect of the final pyrolysis temperature on the total content and composition of PAHs in pyrolysis by-products. To study the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soil, linden biochar obtained by pyrolysis at 250 °C was used, from which the contaminants were extracted and applied to the soil so that the concentration of the marker was 20 and 40 µg/kg. The determination of the residual amount of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was carried out after 1, 2, 6, and 11 months of incubation. Complete degradation of some 3–5-membered polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was found after 1–2 months of incubation. The most persistent pollutants were benzo(a)pyrene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, and pyrene, the concentration of which decreased to 31–71% on after 11 months of incubation. The slower degradation was found in the variant of the experiment with the high concentration level of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. It was concluded that in soils selective accumulation of polynuclear PAHs, that most resistant to biodegradation, can occur.

Biochar reduces uptake and accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in winter wheat on a PAH-contaminated soil

Biochar has been used previously for remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated soils for years, which has achieved remarkable results in improving removal of soil PAHs and reducing PAHs uptake in crops. However, the underlying mechanism of biochar application in reducing the uptake and accumulation of PAHs in winter wheat remains unclear. Pot trials using PAHs-contaminated soils were conducted for whole plant growth period of winter wheat, which were amended with 2% (w/w) bamboo biochar (BB), coconut shell biochar (CB) and maize straw biochar (MSB) or not (CK). Compared with CK, application of the three types of biochar significantly (p < 0.01) reduced grain PAHs concentration, the total equivalent concentration (TEC) values and the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) of grain PAHs, indicating that application of biochar reduced the exposure risk of PAHs in wheat grain, especially for MSB. Consistently, application of the three types of biochar significantly (p < 0.05) reduced uptake and accumulation of PAHs in root and stem of wheat, which may be due to that application of biochar enhanced the degradation of PAHs in the rhizosphere soil. Compared with CK, application of the three types of biochar significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the concentration of PAHs in the rhizosphere soil by 15.9%, 26.1% and 33.7%, respectively. It was found that the degradation rate of HMW PAHs (high molecular weight PAHs, 5-6 ring PAHs) was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than that of LMW PAHs (low molecular weight PAHs, 2-4 ring PAHs) regardless of types of biochar used. Additionally, application of the three types of biochar significantly increased the relative abundance of dominant bacterial phyla and genera in soil. Redundancy analysis and correlation analysis results also showed that there was a strong correlation between the removal rate of PAHs and dominant bacteria in the rhizosphere soil. The present study indicated that biochar could reduce dietary risk of PAHs in wheat grains mainly by increasing the abundance of bacteria related to PAHs degradation, promoting the biodegradation of PAHs in the rhizosphere soil and consequently reducing PAHs uptake in wheat.

Nitrogen transformation promotes the anaerobic degradation of PAHs in water level fluctuation zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir in Yangtze River, China: Evidences derived from in-situ experiment

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pose a great threat to human health and ecological system safety. The interception of nitrogen is common found in the riparian zone. However, there is no evidence on how nitrogen addition affects the anaerobic degradation of PAHs in soil of the water-level-fluctuation zone (WLFZ) of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) in Yangtze River, China. Here, we investigated the PAHs degradation rate, the variation of key functional genes and microbial communities after nitrogen addition in soil that experienced a flooding period of water-level-fluctuation. The results revealed that the ∑16PAHs were decreased 16.19 %–36.65 % and more 3–5-rings PAHs were biodegraded with nitrogen addition in WLFZ. The most genes involved in PAHs-anaerobic degradation and denitrification were up-regulated by nitrate addition, and phyla Firmicutes, Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria were more advantages in nitrogen addition groups. The Tax4Fun based genome function analysis revealed that the microbial activity of PAHs-degradation increased with nitrate addition. The co-occurrence network analysis indicated that nitrogen addition accelerated the metabolism of nitrogen and PAHs. It is the first time to provide the direct experimental evidences that nitrogen transformation in the WLFZ soil promotes anaerobic PAHs degradation. This work is of importance to understand the effect of nitrogen intercepted in the WLFZ soil of TGR in Yangtze River, China.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Degradation in the Sea-Surface Microlayer at Coastal Antarctica.

As much as 400 Tg of carbon from airborne semivolatile aromatic hydrocarbons is deposited to the oceans every year, the largest identified source of anthropogenic organic carbon to the ocean. Microbial degradation is a key sink of these pollutants in surface waters, but has received little attention in polar environments. We have challenged Antarctic microbial communities from the sea-surface microlayer (SML) and the subsurface layer (SSL) with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at environmentally relevant concentrations. PAH degradation rates and the microbial responses at both taxonomical and functional levels were assessed. Evidence for faster removal rates was observed in the SML, with rates 2.6-fold higher than in the SSL. In the SML, the highest removal rates were observed for the more hydrophobic and particle-bound PAHs. After 24 h of PAHs exposure, particle-associated bacteria in the SML showed the highest number of significant changes in their composition. These included significant enrichments of several hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria, especially the fast-growing genera Pseudoalteromonas, which increased their relative abundances by eightfold. Simultaneous metatranscriptomic analysis showed that the free-living fraction of SML was the most active fraction, especially for members of the order Alteromonadales, which includes Pseudoalteromonas. Their key role in PAHs biodegradation in polar environments should be elucidated in further studies. This study highlights the relevant role of bacterial populations inhabiting the sea-surface microlayer, especially the particle-associated habitat, as relevant bioreactors for the removal of aromatic hydrocarbons in the oceans.

Effect of terminal electron acceptors on the anaerobic biodegradation of PAHs in marine sediments

The existing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marine sediment has become a critical threat to biological security. Terminal electron acceptor (TEA) amendment has been applied as a potential strategy to accelerate bioremediation in sediment. HCO3-, NO3-, and SO42- were separately added to anaerobic sediment system containing five kinds of PAH, namely, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene and benzo(a)pyrene. PAH concentration, PAH metabolites, TEA concentration, and electron transport system (ETS) activity were investigated. The HCO3- amendment group achieved the max PAH degradation efficiency of 84.98 %. SO42- group led to the highest benzo(a)pyrene removal rate of 69.26 %. NO3- had the lowest PAH degradation rate of 76.16 %. ETS activity test showed that NO3- significantly inhibited electron transport activity in the sediment. The identified PAH metabolites were the same in each group, including 4,5-dimethylphenanthrene, 3-acetylphenanthrene, 9,10-anthracenedione, pyrene-7-hydroxy-8-carboxylic acid, anthrone, and dibenzothiophene. After 126 d's anaerobic degradation at 25 °C, the utilization of HCO3- and SO42- as selected TEAs promoted the PAH biodegradation performance better than the utilization of NO3-.

The combined enhancement of RL, nZVI and AQDS on the microbial anaerobic-aerobic degradation of PAHs in soil

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous persistent organic pollutants in soil, which have carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic hazards. The effects of rhamnolipid (RL), nano zero-valent iron (nZVI), and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonic acid (AQDS) on the degradation of PAHs in soil were studied. It was found that the treatment of 5 mg·kg−1RL + 1% nZVI +0.2 mmol·kg−1AQDS had the highest degradation rate. The degradation rate of total PAHs and HMW-PAHs was 72.81% and 79.47% respectively after 90 days. High-throughput sequencing showed that in RL + nZVI + AQDS enhanced soil, Clostridium, Geobacter, Anaeromyxobacter and Sphingomonas were the dominant species for anaerobic degradation of PAHs. Rhodococcus, Nocardioides, and Microvirga are the dominant species for aerobic degradation of PAHs. The activities of methyltransferase, dehydrogenase and catechol 1,2-dioxygenase in the anaerobic-aerobic degradation process of PAHs were consistent with the degradation process of PAHs, indicating the role of these enzymes in the degradation of PAHs. RL, nZVI, and AQDS combined enhanced microbial anaerobic-aerobic degradation has great application potential in remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil.

Effects of changes in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emissions and degradation on their concentrations in Tokyo from 2007 and 2016

The concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aerosol were measured in Shinjuku, which is central Tokyo, Japan, for 10 years from 2007 to 2016. The effects of changes in emission sources and their degradation by reaction with ozone were assessed in this study. There was no significant increasing or decreasing trend of the PAH concentrations during 10 years (P > 0.05). The average selected seven the PAH concentrations (0.88 ng m−3) during 10 years was lower than those in New York and Paris. However, the trend of ozone concentrations is increasing in central Tokyo. This inconsistency raises a question. Did the fact that the ozone concentration was higher than the PAH concentrations promote PAH degradation? To apportion the PAH sources, we used PAH concentration profiles and positive matrix factorization analysis. The contribution of vehicle emissions to the PAHs ranged from 40 to 80%. Ozone concentrations increased by 3.70%/year during 10 years. The theoretical degradation rates of PAHs by ozone, which were calculated using a pseudo-first-order rate equation, suggested that the lifetimes of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) decreased by 1 min from 2007 to 2016. We investigated the aging of BaP using the profile of the isomer ratios. We found that the aging of BaP at the urban and roadside sites were nearly identical indicating aging regardless of the season. Although the decomposition of BaP is promoted by the photochemical oxidation reaction, this result suggests that a certain threshold value exists as the degree of the decomposition. This degradation of PAH can improve chemical loss processes in air quality model.

Structural Selectivity of PAH Removal Processes in Soil, and the Effect of Metal Co-Contaminants

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) form a convenient structural series of molecules with which to examine the selectivity exerted on their removal by soil microbiota. It is known that there is an inverse relationship between PAH molecular size and degradation rates in soil. In this paper, we look at how the magnitude of the slope for this relationship, m, can be used as an indicator of the effect of metal co-contaminants on degradation rates across a range of PAH molecular weights. The analysis utilises data collected from our previous microcosm study (Deary, M.E.; Ekumankama, C.C.; Cummings, S.P. Development of a novel kinetic model for the analysis of PAH biodegradation in the presence of lead and cadmium co-contaminants. Journal of Hazard Materials 2016, 307, 240–252) in which we followed the degradation of the 16 US EPA PAHs over 40 weeks in soil microcosms taken from a high organic matter content woodland soil. The soil was amended with a PAH mixture (total concentration of 2166 mg kg−1) and with a range of metal co-contaminant concentrations (lead, up to 782 mg kg−1; cadmium up to 620 mg kg−1; and mercury up to 1150 mg kg−1). It was found that the magnitude of m increases in relation to the applied concentration of metal co-contaminant, indicating a more adverse effect on microbial communities that participate in the removal of higher molecular weight PAHs. We conclude that m is a useful parameter by which we might measure the differential effects of environmental contaminants on the PAH removal. Such information will be useful in planning and implementing remediation strategies.

Response of Root Exudates of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) to Exposure of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Root exudates play a pivotal role in the behaviors of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in mangrove sediments, but the knowledge of how mangrove root exudates response to PAHs pollutants is limited. This study examined the root exudates of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) (B. gymnorrhiza) under exposure in phenanthrene, pyrene, and benzo[a]pyrene solution through a 45 days hydroponic cultivation. The results showed that the root exudates of B. gymnorrhiza were mainly hydrocarbon compounds. Tartaric acid was the dominant low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) in root exudates. Under PAHs stress, the proportion of hydrocarbon compounds in root exudates decreased, while the proportion of amide compounds increased. At the first 15 days exposure, the amounts of dissolved organic carbon, soluble total sugars, total organic acids and LWMOAs all increased and reached the maximum values, subsequently, the amounts of root exudates had dropped. The degradation rates of PAHs followed the sequence of phenanthrene &amp;gt; pyrene &amp;gt; benzo [a] pyrene, and the presence of root exudates can significantly enhance the degradation of PAHs. The results illustrated that PAHs stress can significantly change the concentrations and species of root exudates. This study provides the scientific reference for understanding the ability of B. gymnorrhiza response to PAHs stress.

Effects of Salinity on the Biodegradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Oilfield Soils Emphasizing Degradation Genes and Soil Enzymes.

The biodegradation of organic pollutants is the main pathway for the natural dissipation and anthropogenic remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the environment. However, in the saline soils, the PAH biodegradation could be influenced by soil salts through altering the structures of microbial communities and physiological metabolism of degradation bacteria. In the worldwide, soils from oilfields are commonly threated by both soil salinity and PAH contamination, while the influence mechanism of soil salinity on PAH biodegradation were still unclear, especially the shifts of degradation genes and soil enzyme activities. In order to explain the responses of soils and bacterial communities, analysis was conducted including soil properties, structures of bacterial community, PAH degradation genes and soil enzyme activities during a biodegradation process of PAHs in oilfield soils. The results showed that, though low soil salinity (1% NaCl, w/w) could slightly increase PAH degradation rate, the biodegradation in high salt condition (3% NaCl, w/w) were restrained significantly. The higher the soil salinity, the lower the bacterial community diversity, copy number of degradation gene and soil enzyme activity, which could be the reason for reductions of degradation rates in saline soils. Analysis of bacterial community structure showed that, the additions of NaCl increase the abundance of salt-tolerant and halophilic genera, especially in high salt treatments where the halophilic genera dominant, such as Acinetobacter and Halomonas. Picrust2 and redundancy analysis (RDA) both revealed suppression of PAH degradation genes by soil salts, which meant the decrease of degradation microbes and should be the primary cause of reduction of PAH removal. The soil enzyme activities could be indicators for microorganisms when they are facing adverse environmental conditions.

Effect of magnetite on the catalytic oxidation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in fly ash from MSW incineration: A comparative study of one-step and two-step hydrothermal processes

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), many of which are carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic, exist in fly ash (FA) produced from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI). Hydrothermal treatment (HT) is an efficient approach to remove PAHs from MSWI FA. Here, magnetite (Fe3O4) was used as the catalyst and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the oxidant for one-step and two-step catalytic hydrothermal methods. When the magnetite dosage increased to 15 wt%, the maximum degradation rates of PAHs were 84.36% and 92.51%, respectively; however, the toxicity equivalent quantity (TEQ) degradation rates of the PAHs both increased upon increasing the magnetite dose. At 20 wt% Fe3O4, the maximum TEQ degradation rates of the PAHs were 93.29% and 97.76%, respectively. The reaction between OH and PAHs is non-selective, which means that LMW, MMW, and HMW PAHs were all degraded. The decrease in TEQ was mainly due to the degradation of HMW PAHs, i.e., those with five rings. Under the same Fe3O4 dose, oxidant dose, and reaction time, the detoxification of PAHs by the two-step method was significantly better than that of the one-step method, possibly because the two-step method more effectively produced OH. The first step degraded more than 90% of PAHs, and the residual PAHs in the HT products of the first step limited the utilization of the oxidant during the second step. The minerals in the HT products implied that the two-step hydrothermal method not only produced more OH, which reacted with PAHs, but also generated metal-magnetite substitution, which affected its surface reactivity during heavy metal adsorption and catalysis. These results revealed that both magnetite and the two-step hydrothermal treatment degraded PAHs. 20 wt% magnetite was the optimal amount during the two-step hydrothermal catalytic oxidation of MSWI FA.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Tobacco Tar Using CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots Modified Bi2WO6 Composite Photocatalyst.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in tobacco tar are regarded as a significant threat to human health. PAHs are formed due to the incomplete combustion of organics in tobacco and cigarette paper. Herein, for the first time, we extended the application of CsPbBr3 quantum dots (CsPbBr3) to the photocatalytic degradation of tobacco tar, which was collected from used cigarette filters. To optimize the photoactivity, CsPbBr3 was coupled with Bi2WO6 for the construction of a type-II photocatalyst. The photocatalytic performance of the CsPbBr3/Bi2WO6 composite was evaluated by the degradation rate of PAHs from tobacco tar under simulated solar irradiation. The results revealed that CsPbBr3/Bi2WO6 possesses a large specific surface area, outstanding absorption ability, good light absorption and rapid charge separation. As a result, in addition to good stability, the composite photocatalyst performed remarkably well in degrading PAHs (over 96% were removed in 50 mins of irradiation by AM 1.5 G). This study sheds light on promising novel applications of halide perovskite.

Pilot-scale bioaugmentation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated soil using an indigenous bacterial consortium in soil-slurry bioreactors

Soil-slurry bioreactor based bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soil was studied through laboratory and pilot-scale trials, in which the degradation mechanism was explored. Indigenous PAH-degrading consortium was firstly screened out and it degraded 80.5% of total PAHs in lab-scale bioreactors. Then a pilot-scale trial lasting 410 days was conducted in two bioreactors of 1.5 m3 to examine the operating parameters and validate the optimum running conditions. During the initial 200 days, the crucial running parameters affecting PAH removal were evaluated and selected. Subsequently, an average PAH removal rate of 93.4% was achieved during 15 consecutive batches (210 days) under the optimum running conditions. The kinetic analysis showed that the reactor under optimum conditions achieved the highest PAH degradation rate of 0.1795 day−1 and the shortest half-life of 3.86 days. Notably, efficient mass transfer of PAHs and high biodegradation capability by bioaugmented consortia in soil-slurry bioreactors were two key mechanisms for appreciable PAH removal performance. Under the optimal operating conditions, the degradation rate of low-molecular-weight (LMW) PAHs was significantly higher than high-molecular-weight (HMW) PAHs; when the mass transfer was limited, there was no significant difference between their degradation behaviors. Both microbial co-metabolism and collaborative metabolism might occur when all PAHs demonstrated low degradation rates. The findings provide insightful guidance on the future assessment and remediation practices of PAH-contaminated sites.

In addition, some species can also retain historical information, for example, related to environmental pollution, due to their leaf class age. In this study, the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Abies holophylla and Pinus tabuliformis needle samples in the function of their class age has been investigated to obtain information regarding the degradation constant for each PAH under investigation (α values ranging from 0.173 to 1.870) and to evaluate the possibility to correlate the presence of PAHs in needles with some important pollution environmental factors. Considering air pollutant variables registered in Jilin Province, interesting correlations (at 95% confidence level) have been found between coal consumption per year and anthracene contents in needles, while fluorene, phenanthrene, and anthracene results correlated with coal consumption. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the total PAH concentration in needles, for both species, increased with their age (from 804 to 3604 ng g-1 dry weight), showing a general tendency to accumulate these substances through years. PAH degradation rates increased instead with molecular complexity. This study could be considered a first trial to obtain historical environmental information by pine needles biomonitoring.

Combined remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by plant and immobilized bacteria in contaminated soil

In this study, three dominant bacteria Cellulomonas flavigena (Ⅰ), Cellulomonas flavigena (Ⅱ), Sphingomonas paucimobilis (Ⅲ) from Fire Phoenix rhizosphere soil were used to develop a multi-microbial agent system. For oil-contaminated soil in the Dagang oilfield, the immobilized test bacteria were inoculated into the Fire Phoenix rhizosphere soil to examine the effects of bacterial agents on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-contaminated soil. The results showed that PAHs degradation was promoted under the ⅠⅢ (with an effective number of viable bacteria of 109 cfu·mL-1) and ⅠⅡⅢ (with an effective number of viable bacteria of 107 cfu·mL-1) treatments. The PAHs degradation rates were 32.2% and 41.4%, respectively, being significantly higher than that in the control treatments. The ⅠⅡⅢ treatment significantly promoted the belowground biomass of Fire Phoenix, which was 31.2% higher than that of the control treatment. Our results suggested that the multi-microbial agent constructed by the three dominant bacteria ⅠⅡⅢ could be used as a strengthening method for the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil by Fire Phoenix, which provided a novel method for microbial enhanced phytoremediation technology.

Remediation of contaminated dredged harbor sediments by combining hydrodynamic cavitation, hydrocyclone, and persulfate oxidation process

A pilot-scale hybrid treatment system consisting of hydrodynamic cavitation (HC), hydrocyclone separator (HS), and sodium persulfate (PS), was employed for removing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from dredged harbor sediments. The effectiveness of PAH degradation was studied by varying the inlet pressure (0–2.0 bar), PS dosage (or Σ[PAH] to [PS] mole ratio of 1:1–1:103) at HS inflow velocity of 2.85 m/s, slurry concentration of 10%, and reaction time of 60 min. The degradation rate of PAH in the overflow (OF) sediment was significantly lower than that of the underflow (UF) sediment. After an inlet pressure increase of 0.5 bar and ΣPAH: [PS] molar ratio of 1: 10, the PAH removal was 87% and 55% in the UF and OF, respectively, by the combined HC–PS–HS unit. Without PS, the PAHs removal was 46% and 40% in the UF and OF, respectively. The removal efficiency for 6-, 5-, 4-, 3-, and 2-ring PAHs was 100%, 93%, 93%, 92%, and 82% in the UF and 55%, 61%, 67%, 47%, and 36% in the OF by the combined HC−PS−HS system. FEEM spectroscopy clarified that aromatic protein-based components (tryptophan- and tyrosine-like combined) were gradually degraded and transformed into soluble microbial metabolites when organic matter content declined during the combined HC−PS−HS treatment. This study provides new insights into the combined HC−PS−HS system for PAH degradation in dredged sediments.

Degradation of several polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by laccase in reverse micelle system

Remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in oily sludge has become the focus of attention. UV spectrophotometer analysis showed that four types of PAHs were found in sample, which including phenanthrene, anthracene, benzo(a)anthracene and benzo(b)fluoranthene. In order to degrade PAH effectively, the laccase reverse micelles system was proposed. The system protects laccase from being affected by organic phase. Reverse micelles were prepared by using isooctane to simulate oil. The optimum water content W0 was 10 by measuring the electrical conductivity of the system. Under this condition, the effects of pH, temperature and ionic strength on the degradation rate of PAHs were investigated. Also, compared with that of non-immobilized laccase, the ratio between the secondary structures of laccase under different conditions was studied. The results showed that the highest laccase activity was obtained at pH 4.2 and 30 °C with 60 mmol/L KCl. Meanwhile, the structure of α-helix accounts for the largest proportion, and the ratio of α-helix in the laccase secondary structure in the laccase-reverse micelle system was higher than that of the non-immobilized one under this condition. Finally, predicting the reactive site of the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was simulated by ORCA (Version 4.2.0). The application in oily sludge was further conducted. This study provides an effective method and basis for the degradation of PAHs in oily sludge.
