Nitrogen-doped bismuth ferrite nanozymes: Tailored electronic structure for organic pollutant degradation

The insufficient catalytic activity and non-recyclability of nanozymes are major obstacles for nanozyme-mediated water purification. Since electronic transfer is the basic essence of catalysis-mediated redox reactions, this research reveals that meticulous tuning of the electronic structure of magnetic bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) through nitrogen doping, allows for excellent performance in organic pollutants degradation in water (including dyestuff and antibiotics), along with magnet separation-mediated recyclability. Mechanically speaking, nitrogen-doping rational optimize their peroxidase-like activity by increasing the electron density of the Fe-N active center, meanwhile, the tailored bandgap significantly enhances the full-spectrum absorption, especially in the near-infrared region (NIR). Consequently, a light-enhanced N-doped BiFeO3 nanozyme has been engineered to generate excessive reactive oxygen species (14.63-fold in total) for pollutants degradation with recyclable capacity, 94.27% for Methylene Blue and over 60% for multiple antibiotics. This study underscores the efficacy of fine-tuning the electronic structure in enhancing the catalytic performance of nanozymes for organic pollutants removing.

Visible-Light Photocatalytic Degradation Efficiency of Tetracycline and Rhodamine B Using a Double Z-Scheme Heterojunction Catalyst of UiO-66-NH2/BiOCl/Bi2S3.

BiOCl is a promising photocatalyst, but due to its weak visible light absorption capacity and low photogenerated electron-hole pair separation rate, its practical application is limited to a certain extent. In this study, a novel double Z-scheme heterojunction UiO-66-NH2/BiOCl/Bi2S3 catalyst was constructed to broaden the visible light response range and promote high photogenerated hole-electron separation of BiOCl. Its photocatalytic performance is evaluated by dissociating tetracycline (TC) and rhodamine B (RhB) in visible light. The optimal proportion of UiO-66-NH2/BiOCl/Bi2S3 hybrids exhibits the best degradation efficiency of visible light illumination (∼93% in 120 min for TC and ∼98% in 60 min for RhB). The synergistic effect of a large visible light response range and the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism ensure the excellent visible photocatalytic activity of UiO-66-NH2/BiOCl/Bi2S3. It is proven that h+ and •O2- are the main active substances in the photocatalysis process by active substance capture experiments and electron spin resonance tests. The intermediates and degradation processes are analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. This study proves that the new UiO-66-NH2/BiOCl/Bi2S3 photocatalyst has great application potential in the field of water pollution degradation and will provide a new idea for the optimization of BiOCl.

Unlocking enhanced photocatalytic power: Donor-acceptor synergy in non-metallic g-C3N4 hollow nanospheres

Selecting safe, non-toxic, and non-metallic semiconductor materials that facilitate the degradation of pollutants in water stands out as an optimal approach to combat environmental pollution. Herein, graphitic carbon nitride (g–C3N4)–based hollow nanospheres nonmetallic photocatalyst modified with covalent organic framework materials named TpMA, based on 1, 3, 5-trimethylchloroglucuronide (Tp) and melamine (MA), was successfully synthesized (abbreviated as CNTP). The ordered electron donor-acceptor structure inherent in TpMA contributed to enhancing the transport efficiency of photogenerated carriers in CNTP. The CNTP photocatalysts exhibited excellent performance in degrading rhodamine B and tetracycline in visible light, with optimal degradation rates reached more than 90% in 60 and 80 min, respectively, which were 5.3 and 3.0 times higher than those of pure CNNS. The increased photocatalytic efficiency observed in CNTP composites could be traced back to the covalently connection between the two molecules, forming a π-conjugated system that facilitated the separative efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and intensified the utilization of visible light. This study provided a new means to design and fabricate highly efficient and environmentally friendly non-metallic photocatalytic materials.

Persulphate assisted photoelectrochemical degradation of organic pollutants in water on a silver nanoparticle modified Cu2O photoanode

This work presents the photoelectrochemical production of sulphate radicals using fluorine-doped tine oxide – silver nanoparticles – copper(I) oxide (FTO-AgNPs-Cu2O) photoanode in the presence of peroxydisulphate salt for the enhanced degradation of selected organic pollutants in water. Firstly, Cu2O was prepared via a facile and template-free one-pot method, then AgNPs were photo-reduced on the surface of the Cu2O, and the resultant product was immobilised on an FTO conductive substrate to form FTO-AgNPs-Cu2O photoanode. When the electrode was applied for the abatement of tetracycline in the presence of 3 mM peroxydisulphate salt and 1.5 V external potential, the degree of tetracycline degradation and mineralisation after 90 min was 82 % and 78 % respectively. Furthermore, the same system was able to achieve degradation of 81 % sulfamethoxazole degradation within 90 min and 100 % orange II dye degradation within 30 min. The photoanode was efficient in the treatment of real wastewater containing tetracycline. Scavenger studies reveal that holes, hydroxyl, and sulphate radicals significantly participated in the degradation process. The electrode is stable and therefore applicable for the abatement of other organic pollutants in a persulphate-assisted photoelectrochemical degradation system.

Rationally designed β-FeOOH/N,P-MXene Schottky-junction for efficient removal of pollutants from wastewater

Effective separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, as well as providing ample reactive sites, is crucial for enhancing the activity of photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in water. In this study, we have expanded MXene through a simple water swelling method and successfully doped N and P elements into MXene via a hydrothermal process. This modification not only exfoliates the layered structure of MXene, enlarging its specific surface area and providing abundant reactive sites but also endows MXene with enhanced metallic properties. As a result, an N,P-MXene/FeOOH Schottky junction photocatalyst is constructed. Our photocatalytic experiments revealed that the FO-NPM200/H2O2 system performs well under extreme pH conditions and exhibits excellent photocatalytic stability across a wide pH range (1–13), suggesting its outstanding potential for practical applications in complex environments. Under conditions of pH = 7 without the presence of inorganic salt ions, the degradation rate of tetracycline reached 98.1 %, and the photocatalytic reduction rate of the common heavy metal salt Cr(VI) was as high as 99.4 %. We have also unveiled the band structure of FO-NPM200 using UPS and UV–vis DRS. This research paves a new way for the design and construction of Schottky junction photocatalysts.

Efficient Sonocatalytic Degradation of Pyrene Using a Novel and Magnetically Recoverable Graphitic Carbon Nitride – cobalt ferrite – graphene oxide (g-C3N4/CoFe2O4@GO) Nanocomposite with an Enhanced Z-scheme Electron Transfer Pathway.

The use of ultrasound in the presence of semiconductor materials is considered a novel technique for the degradation of hazardous organic pollutants in water. In this study, graphitic carbon nitride (g), graphene oxide (GO), and Cobalt ferrite, CoFe2O4 (CF) nanoparticles were synthesized via soft-template-assisted synthesis, Hummer’s, and hydrothermal methods, respectively. Subsequently, the hybrid magnetic g-C3N4/CoFe2O4/GO (g-CF1@GO, g-CF2@GO, g-CF3@GO, and g-CF4@GO) nanocomposites were prepared via a simple hydrothermal route at 180 °C. The crystallite structure, functional groups, morphology, and energy band gaps were characterized by XRD diffraction, FT-IR, TEM, and UV-vis DRS. The heterostructure nanocomposites were formed, as evidenced by the TEM data, with an average crystallite size of 13.4 nm and band gap energies of 2.19 – 1.80 eV, suggesting their suitability for sono/photo degradation processes. Pyrene, a tetracyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) was chosen as a model pollutant to evaluate the performance of the prepared nanocomposites toward sonocatalytic degradation. The nanocomposites exhibited higher degradation performances than individual materials. The sonocatalytic degradation of pyrene revealed that the g-CF4@GO nanocomposite exhibited the highest sonocatalytic activity and achieved 86.7 and 92.3% degradation efficiency for 10 and 5 mg/L of pyrene under ultrasonic irradiation (40 mg/L, 50 W and 20 kHz) in 120 min. In addition, the sonocatalytic degradation of pyrene is performed in the absence of any oxidant and follows a pseudo-first-order kinetics. Trapping experiments were carried out to investigate the sonocatalytic degradation mechanism, and the results showed that ●O2- was the major reactive species. The easily recoverable magnetic nanocomposite via a simple magnet was tested for its recyclability and reusability, and it was observed that it could degrade up to 78% of pyrene in four cycles.

In situ-growth of Fe2S3 ultrathin layer on CdS nanorod through cation-exchange for efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants under visible light coupled oxidant activation

A new core-shell structure CdS@Fe2S3 material was synthesized by in situ cation exchange method to enhance the degradation of organic pollutants in water under visible light. It is proved that Fe2S3 nanolayer is successfully loaded on CdS nanorods by TEM and UV-Vis spectra and other means. The representative Rhodamine B was selected as the target pollutant and the results of degradation experiment showed that after 60 min of exposure to LED visible light with a low energy (25 W), the removal efficiency for this dye could reach 98 % in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) forming free radicals, which displayed a observed kinetic rate constant exceeding 0.62 min−1 that is approximately 5 times higher than the system without PMS addition and 10 times than the system with original CdS as catalyst. The result of inhibition experiments shows that sulfate radical (SO4·-) and singlet oxygen (1O2) play as important roles during the photocatalytic process. In addition, this core-shell material can be recycled at least four times. Generally, this study can make full use of visible light which can be easily obtained and effectually resolve the organic pollution problems.

Preparation of 2D/2D CoAl-LDH/BiO(OH)XI1−X Heterojunction Catalyst with Enhanced Visible–Light Photocatalytic Activity for Organic Pollutants Degradation in Water

Hydrotalcite/bismuth solid solution (2D/2D CoAl-LDH/BiO(OH)XI1−X) heterojunction photocatalysts were fabricated through a hydrothermal route. Because of their identical layered structure and interlayer hydroxides, CoAl-LDH(2D) and BiO(OH)XI1−X(2D) form a tightly bonded heterojunction, resulting in efficient light absorption, excitation, and carrier migration conversion. At the same time, the large specific surface area and abundant hydroxyl groups of the layered structure make the heterojunction catalyst exhibit excellent performance in the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. Under visible light irradiation and in the presence of 1 g/L of the catalyst, 10 mg/L of methyl orange (MO) in water could be completely degraded within 20 min, and the degradation rate of tetracycline (TC) reached 99.23% within 5 min. CoAl-LDH/BiO(OH)XI1−X still maintained good photocatalytic degradation activity of tetracycline after five cycles, and the structure of the catalyst did not change. The reaction mechanism related to the degradation of TC by photocatalytic reactions was explored in detail, and the photoexcitation of the semiconductor heterojunction, as well as the subsequent free radical reaction process and the degradation pathway of TC were clarified. This work provides a promising strategy for the preparation of efficient photocatalytic materials and the development of water purification technology.

Water-dispersable photoreactors based on core–shell mesoporous silica particles

Robust solid-core silica particles with submicrometer size and anthracene-containing mesoporous shell were obtained and studied as model water-dispersable photoreactors. An anthracene derivative containing a triethoxysilyl group was synthesized and co-condensed with tetraethoxysilane in various ratios to form a photoactive mesoporous shell with a thickness up to approximately 80 nm on previously prepared solid silica particles. Mesopores of as-synthesized particles, without a commonly applied removal of the micellar templates, offered a confined space for solubilization of hydrophobic molecules. Efficient excitation energy transfer from anthracene chromophores to both hydrophobic (perylene) and hydrophilic (fluoresceine) encapsulated acceptors was observed in an aqueous dispersion of the particles. Photosensitized oxidation of encapsulated perylene was shown to proceed efficiently in such systems serving as water-dispersable photoreactors. Importantly, the designed core–shell systems were found to be stable for a long time (at least 24 months) and robust enough, thanks to the presence of solid cores, to be handled by centrifugation in aqueous dispersions. All these features make them promising candidates for reusable systems for the photosensitized degradation of water pollutants, especially hydrophobic pollutants.

Design of Phytic Acid Crosslinked Xerogels as Organic Photocatalysts for Visible Light‐Assisted Degradation of Dyes

AbstractExtensive research is being carried out on the degradation of water pollutants using various strategies to overcome the global water crisis. In the present study, xerogels as a better alternative is utilized to metal oxides for the photocatalytic degradation of toxic water pollutants such as dyes. Xerogels of polyaniline (PANI) and polypyrrole (PPy) are synthesized using phytic acid as a dopant as well as cross‐linker in the weight ratios of 1:1, 1:2, and 2:1 via simple chemical oxidative polymerization. The synthesized xerogels are analyzed for their spectral, morphological, thermal, and optical properties using FTIR, UV–vis, XRD, SEM, and TGA techniques. The xerogels are also tested for their photocatalytic activity against textile dyes – Methylene Blue (MB), Alizarin Red S, (ARS), Rhodamine B (RhB), and Methyl Orange (MO). Among all the composite xerogels, PANI/PPy‐2/1 showed excellent degradation efficiency of 91% for MB dye, 88% for RhB dye, 96% for ARS dye, and 92% for MO dye respectively. The composite PANI/PPy xerogels showed better degradation efficiency than their pristine counterparts. The fragments of the degraded dyes are examined using the LCMS technique and a tentative dye degradation mechanism is proposed.

TiO2–Cu7S4 modified with a carbazole-based conjugated porous polymer for adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A

Adsorption-photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in water is an advantageous method for environmental purification. Herein, a feasible strategy is developed to construct a novel dual S-scheme heterojunctions Cu7S4–TiO2-conjugated polymer with a donor–acceptor structure. There are abundant adsorption active sites for adsorption in the porous structure of the composites, which can rapidly capture pollutants through hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. In addition, the dual S-scheme heterojunctions effectively improve carrier separation while maintaining a strong redox ability. Thus, the optimized 1.5% CST-130 catalysts can adsorb 71% of 20 ppm BPA in 15 min and completely remove it within 30 min with high adsorption capacity and photodegradation efficiency. Therefore, this study provides a new inspiration for synergistic adsorption and degradation of BPA and the construction of dual S-scheme heterojunction.

Nanoporous Au Behavior in Methyl Orange Solutions.

Nanoporous (NP) gold, the most extensively studied and efficient NP metal, possesses exceptional properties that make it highly attractive for advanced technological applications. Notably, its remarkable catalytic properties in various significant reactions hold enormous potential. However, the exploration of its catalytic activity in the degradation of water pollutants remains limited. Nevertheless, previous research has reported the catalytic activity of NP Au in the degradation of methyl orange (MO), a toxic azo dye commonly found in water. This study aims to investigate the behavior of nanoporous gold in MO solutions using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography. The NP Au was prepared by chemical removal of silver atoms of an AuAg precursor alloy prepared by ball milling. Immersion tests were conducted on both pellets and powders of NP Au, followed by examination of the residual solutions. Additionally, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance measurements were employed to analyze NP Au after the tests. The findings reveal that the predominant and faster process involves the partially reversible adsorption of MO onto NP Au, while the catalytic degradation of the dye plays a secondary and slower role in this system.

Degradation of rhodamine B dye under visible and solar light on zinc oxide and nickel-doped zinc oxide thin films

The kinetic investigation of rhodamine B dye's photocatalytic degradation, chosen as a model pollutant, was conducted at room temperature using Zinc oxide (ZnO) and nickel-doped zinc oxide (Zn0.97Ni0.03O) photocatalysts synthesized through the spray pyrolysis method. XRD analysis confirmed the formation of hexagonal ZnO and Zn0.97Ni0.03O films, with crystallite sizes ranging from 19 to 29 nm and varying in mean average grain size from 72 nm to 88 nm. The surface morphology of the Ni-doped ZnO films was influenced by nickel doping, observed through SEM and TEM micrographs, revealing a dense structure of spherical-shaped crystals. Light transmission and optical band gap energy of the films ranged between specified values, ranging from 3.27 to 3.24 eV. The degradation process was assessed under various conditions, including different light sources (UV lamp and solar irradiation), pH levels, and substrate concentrations. Degradation followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model, with rate constants (k) and half-life times (t1/2) calculated accordingly. The degradation efficiency of undoped ZnO and ZnO doped with nickel decreased with increasing concentration under UV irradiation from (0.1–0.5 M) under UV irradiation decreased from (34.29–45.02) (49.61–56.61), while under visible light are (40–45.07 %) (58.46–60.24 %), removal rates ranged within specific percentages. The porous Zn0.97Ni0.03O synthesized at 0.5 M exhibited the highest photocatalytic efficiency due to its enhanced crystallinity, resulting in degradation rates of 9.22 and 11.22 × 10−3 min−1 and half-life times of 75.18 and 61.77 min at 90 min specified for both UV and solar light irradiations, respectively. Acidification of the reaction medium accelerated the photocatalytic degradation kinetics, while alkalization slowed it down. These findings mark a significant advancement in the utilization of oxide semiconductors for water pollutant degradation under natural sunlight.

An Overview of Environmental Catalysis Mediated by Hydrogen Peroxide

The use of hydrogen peroxide (produced in situ or ex situ) as the main agent in oxidative processes of environmental pollutant removal is widely studied. The degradation of water pollutants, such as dyes, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, petroleum derivatives, and even pathogens, has been successfully obtained by different techniques. This review gives an overview of the more recent methods developed to apply oxidative processes mediated by H2O2 and other reactive oxygen species (ROS) in environmental catalysis, with particular attention to the strategies (Fenton-like and Bio-Fenton, photo- and electro-catalysis) and the materials employed. A wide discussion about the characteristics of the materials specifically studied for hydrogen peroxide activation, as well as about their chemical composition and morphology, was carried out. Moreover, recent interesting methods for the generation and use of hydrogen peroxide by enzymes were also presented and their efficiency and applicability compared with the Fenton and electro-Fenton methods discussed above. The use of Bio-Fenton and bi-enzymatic methods for the in situ generation of ROS seems to be attractive and scalable, although not yet applied in full-scale plants. A critical discussion about the feasibility, criticalities, and perspectives of all the methods considered completes this review.

Light-Induced Self-Assembled Polydiacetylene/Carbon Dot Functional "Honeycomb".

The design of functional supramolecular assemblies from individual molecular building blocks is a fundamental challenge in chemistry and material science. We report on the fabrication of "honeycomb" films by light-induced coassembly of diacetylene derivatives and carbon dots. Specifically, modulating noncovalent interactions between the carbon dots, macrocyclic diacetylene, and anthraquinone diacetylene facilitates formation of thin films exhibiting a long-range, uniform pore structure. We show that light irradiation at distinct wavelengths plays a key role in the assembly process and generation of unique macro-porous morphology, by both initiating interactions between the carbon dots and the anthraquinone moieties and giving rise to the topotactic polymerization of the polydiacetylene network. We further demonstrate utilization of the macro-porous film as a photocatalytic platform for water pollutant degradation and as potential supercapacitor electrodes, both applications taking advantage of the high surface area, hydrophobicity, and pore structure of the film.

Construction of a direct Z-scheme Cs3Bi2Cl9/g-C3N4 heterojunction composite for efficient photocatalytic degradation of various pollutants in water: Performance, kinetics and degradation mechanism

The use of emerging composite materials has been booming to remove environmental pollutants. The aim of this research is to develop a new composite based on Cs3Bi2Cl9 perovskite and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) to investigate the photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation. To achieve this, we produce the Cs3Bi2Cl9/g-C3N4 heterojunctions through a simple self-assembly synthesis. The as-synthesized composites are characterized using XRD, FTIR, FESEM, TEM, BET and EDX techniques. The photocatalytic performance of Cs3Bi2Cl9/g-C3N4 is examined in the degradation of various water contaminants, including 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), tetracycline antibiotic (TC), methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO). The experimental results indicate the superior photocatalytic performance of the composites in the degradation of pollutants compared to pure Cs3Bi2Cl9 and g-C3N4. The 10% Cs3Bi2Cl9/g-C3N4 composite achieves the optimal degradation efficiency of 100, 92, 98.7, and 85.1% of 4-NP, TC, MB, and MO, respectively. This superior photocatalytic activity attributes to improved optical and electrochemical properties, including enhanced absorption ability, narrowing band gap, promoted separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, and a high redox potential, which is confirmed by UV–vis DRS, PL, EIS, and CV analyses. The 10% Cs3Bi2Cl9/g-C3N4 composite also demonstrates high photocatalytic stability after four consecutive cycles. Radical trapping tests show that superoxide radicals (•O2−), holes (h+), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) contribute to the photocatalytic process. Based on the obtained data, a direct Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism is proposed. Overall, this research offers a new stable photocatalyst with excellent prospect for photocatalytic applications.

Synthesis and photocatalytic activity of BiOI particles: An efficient visible-light-driven degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous environments

Bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) particles were successfully fabricated through solvothermal activation using bismuth (III) nitrate pentahydrate and potassium iodide as precursors. The photocatalytic activities of BiOI were investigated under the influence of synthesis temperature (120–200 °C) with a fixed duration of 12 h. The physical-chemical properties of the samples were systematically investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, N2-sorption isotherm techniques, and pH of the point of zero charge (pHpzc). The prepared BiOI exhibited a single phase with a non-uniform 2D morphology with different sizes, an average crystallite size of 30 nm, and a BET surface area of 20.71 m²g−1. The zero-point charge was determined to be 7.7. The photocatalytic performance under simulated solar light irradiation was investigated by examining the effects of dye initial concentration, catalyst dose, and dye pH. Remarkably, BiOI synthesized at 160 °C demonstrated an impressive 85% removal efficiency of 10 ppm MO (methyl orange) at normal pH levels (pH 6.8) within 120 min under visible light irradiation, along with the highest rate constant of 0.01418 min−1. The quenching effects of different scavengers indicate the significant role of reactive O2•– and a minor role of hVB+ and •OHads in the photocatalytic process. These findings underscore the potential of BiOI particles as efficient photocatalysts for environmental applications, particularly in the degradation of organic pollutants in water using solar light irradiation.

Phosphate-mediated degradation of organic pollutants in water with peroxymonosulfate revisited: Radical or non-radical oxidation?

Whilst it is generally recognized that phosphate enables to promote the removal of some organic pollutants with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation, however, there is an ongoing debate as to whether free radicals are involved. By integrating different methodologies, here we provide new insights into the reaction mechanism of the binary mixture of phosphates (i.e., NaH2PO4, Na2HPO3, and NaH2PO2) with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Enhanced degradation of organic pollutants and observation of 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) adducts (i.e. DMPOOH and 5,5-dimethyl-2-oxopyrroline-1-oxyl (DMPOX)) with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) in most phosphates/PMS system seemly support a radical-dominant mechanism. However, fluorescence probe experiments confirm that no significant amount of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) are produced in such reaction systems. PMS in the phosphate solutions (without any organics) remains relatively stable, but is only consumed while organic substrates are present, which is distinct from a typical radical-dominant Co2+/PMS system where PMS is continuously decomposed. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the energy barriers of the phosphates/PMS reaction processes are greatly decreased when non-radical mechanism dominates. Complementary evidence suggests that the reactive intermediates of PMS-phosphate complex, rather than the free radicals, are capable of oxidizing electron-rich substrates such as DMPO and organic pollutants. Taking the case of phosphate/PMS system as an example, this study demonstrates the necessity of acquisition of lines of evidence for resolving paradoxes in identifying EPR adducts.

Degradation of Water Pollutants by Biochar Combined with Advanced Oxidation: A Systematic Review

Recently, biochar has emerged as a promising option for environmentally friendly remediation due to its cost-effectiveness, extensive surface area, porosity, and exceptional electrical conductivity. Biochar-based advanced oxidation procedures (BC-AOPs) have gained popularity as an effective approach to breaking down organic pollutants in aqueous environments. It is commonly recognized that the main reactive locations within BC-AOPs consist of functional groups found on biochar, which encompass oxygen-containing groups (OCGs), imperfections, and persistent free radicals (PFRs). Additionally, the existence of metallic components supported on biochar and foreign atoms doped into it profoundly impacts the catalytic mechanism. These components not only modify the fundamental qualities of biochar but also serve as reactive sites. Consequently, this paper offers a comprehensive review of the raw materials, preparation techniques, modification approaches, and composite catalyst preparation within the biochar catalytic system. Special attention is given to explaining the modifications in biochar properties and their impacts on catalytic activity. This paper highlights degradation mechanisms, specifically pathways that include radical and non-radical processes. Additionally, it thoroughly examines the importance of active sites as catalysts and the basic catalytic mechanism of BC-AOPs. Finally, the potential and future directions of environmental remediation using biochar catalysts and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are discussed. Moreover, suggestions for future advancements in BC-AOPs are provided to facilitate further development.
