Effect of stress unloading rate on fine-scale deformation mechanism of rock under high osmotic pressure

To explore the influence of the working face excavation rate on the rock deformation mechanism and seepage characteristics, deformation and seepage tests of sandstone under different loading and unloading stress paths, such as constant axial pressure unloading confining pressure and loading axial pressure unloading confining pressure, were carried out. Particle Flow Code in 3 Dimensions (PFC3D) and Python were used to realize fluid-solid coupling, and numerical simulation calculations were performed along the test path to analyze the influence of the unloading rate on the fine-scale deformation mechanism and permeability characteristics of sandstone, and the relationship between crack type and permeability was obtained. A sandstone fracture mechanics model is established to analyze the stress concentration degree at the end of the branch crack of the test path. The results show that the rate of confining pressure unloading is inversely proportional to the strain. Additionally, permeability correlates with the principal stress difference in an exponential manner. Interestingly, the sensitivity of permeability to stress shows an inverse trend with the unloading rate of confining pressure. Furthermore, there exists a linear relationship between permeability and the number of cracks. During the unloading process, tensile cracks predominate, and the propagation of shear cracks lags behind that of tensile cracks. The proportion of tensile cracks decreases with the increase of the unloading rate when the axial pressure is unchanged but increases when axial pressure is added, resulting in axial compression deformation and expansion deformation along the unloading direction. These research outcomes offer theoretical insights for the prudent selection of mining rates, and they hold significant implications for mitigating water inrush disasters in deep mining operations.

Dynamic impact mechanical properties of red sandstone based on digital image correlation method

ABSTRACT In the process of underground blasting excavation, the safety and stability of rock mass are significantly influenced by dynamic load. To study the full-field strain and displacement behaviour of rock materials subjected to dynamic compressive force, the impact tests were done on red sandstone specimens using an electromagnetically driven Hopkinson pressure bar. At the same time, the data were collected by a high-speed camera, and non-contact measurements of the red sandstone were carried out with the digital image correlation method. The resulting images were screened and analysed, based on which the stress-strain curve, full-field strain cloud diagram and displacement cloud diagram were obtained. Results show that the dynamic peak stress increases with the increase of impact velocity. During the impact process, substantial internal uneven deformation occurs in the red sandstone close to the transmission bar’s end face. Under the impact load, the cracks initiate from the upper and lower sides near the transmission bar’s end face, followed by formation of cracks in the middle part. These cracks expand throughout the rock to form through-cracks, eventually resulting in complete failure. For rock materials, the evolution of their strain field during the failure process can reflect the initiation and propagation of their internal cracks. Therefore, the use of digital image correlation method proves effective for studying the deformation and failure mechanisms of rock. The conclusions obtained in this study provide a valuable reference for the macro-meso deformation and failure mechanisms of geotechnical materials.

Study on rock energy evolution and constitutive model under water–rock interaction

To explore the degradation in rock mechanical properties due to water–rock interactions and formulate a nonlinear damage constitutive model for the entire stress–strain curve of rocks, experiments involving saturated, dry-wet cycling, and uniaxial compression tests were conducted on granite and siltstone. Based on energy theory, the energy evolution of the rock throughout the testing process was scrutinized. The range of the compaction stage was identified through the analysis of the dissipation energy change curve. A nonlinear damage constitutive model for rocks subjected to water-rock interactions was then devised, drawing on concepts from statistical damage mechanics. The findings indicated a progressive reduction in uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus due to water–rock interactions, while the Poisson’s ratio was observed to increase. The energy density curve under these conditions delineated four distinct phases: compaction energy dissipation, linear energy accumulation, pre-peak gradient increase, and post-peak sudden change. The introduction of the unit elastic strain energy density metric underscored the deteriorating effects from an energy standpoint. A nonlinear damage constitutive model, incorporating the compaction stage based on a coupled damage variable, was formulated. The predictions of this model closely matched the empirical data, thereby affirming its validity. This model provides an enhanced depiction of rock deformation and failure mechanisms under the influence of water–rock interactions.

Evaluating the Efficiency of the Mine Workings Supporting Technology Application to Increase Contour Stability

Maintaining the mine workings will also require significant costs to repair them both before and after they are introduced into production, especially in the zone of influence of the mining operations. Maintaining and increasing the volume of underground coal mining is only possible with a highly efficient technology for conducting and maintaining preparatory workings. The purpose of the study was to assess the parameters for controlling the stability of the contours of mine workings secured by anchor support to create a technology for intensive and safe conduct of mine workings based on the identified patterns of behavior of the adjacent rock masses. The idea of the approach is to use the anthropogenic stress-strain state to develop an effective technology for securing the contour rock massif. The mechanism of rock deformation, shear and collapse in a structurally disturbed heterogeneous rock massif is studied to assess the state of the rock massif around mine workings. Technological prerequisites for anchoring the marginal soil rocks, taking into account the state of the rock mass around the excavation, are developed and the parameters of anchor support operation in mines to secure the rods in excavations to ensure the safety of mining operations are determined.

Experimental study of precursory features of CO2 blasting-induced coal rock fracture based on grayscale and texture analysis.

CO2 blasting has been identified as a potent method for enhancing the permeability of coal seams and improving gas drainage efficiency. This study is focused on elucidating the deformation and fracture mechanisms of coal and rock during CO2 blasting and on identifying the precursor characteristics of these processes. To this end, a CO2 blasting-induced coal rock fracture pressure model and a gas pressure distribution model were developed. The research utilized a self-developed CO2 blasting test platform along with a non-contact full-strain field measurement analysis system. Briquette samples were subjected to CO2 blasting tests under controlled experimental conditions, which included an axial pressure of 1.0 MPa and variable gas pressures of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 MPa. This methodology enabled the capture of the principal strain field on the surface of the samples. The Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) was employed to extract and analyze the grayscale and texture features of the strain cloud maps, facilitating a quantitative assessment of their evolution. The aim was to pinpoint the precursor characteristics associated with coal rock cracking and crack propagation. The results revealed that: (1) During the cracking and subsequent propagation of samples, the strain field's grayscale histogram underwent a transformation from a "broad and low" to a "narrow and high" configuration, with a consistent increase in peak frequency. Specifically, at 3 ms, a primary crack was observed in the sample, evidenced by a grayscale peak frequency of 0.0846. By 9 ms, as the crack propagated, the grayscale peak frequency escalated to 0.1626. (2) The texture feature parameters experienced their initial abrupt change at 3ms. Correlation with the gas pressure distribution model indicated that this was the crack initiation moment in the sample. (3) A secondary abrupt shift in the texture feature parameters occurred at 9ms, in conjunction with experimental phenomena, was identified as the crack propagation phase. Monitoring the grayscale and texture features of the principal strain field on the coal rock surface proved effective in recognizing the precursor characteristics of crack initiation and propagation. This research has the potential to reduce blasting costs in coal mines, optimize blasting effects, and provided theoretical guidance for enhancing gas extraction efficiency from deep and low permeability coal seams.

Effects of natural stiff discontinuities on the deformation and failure mechanisms of deep hard rock under true triaxial conditions

Stiff discontinuities have a significant influence on deep hard rock engineering disasters. To study the influence of these discontinuities on the deformation and failure mechanisms of deep hard rock during excavation, true triaxial tests are carried out on marble samples with natural stiff discontinuities; samples with different discontinuity inclination angles and thicknesses are tested under different true triaxial stress conditions. The experimental results show that the post-peak deformation and failure characteristics of a sample are significantly influenced by the inclination angle, thickness, and stress state of the stiff discontinuity. Under the conditions of a relatively high minimum principal stress, small intermediate principal stress, thick stiff discontinuity, and inclination angle close to the failure angle of the intact sample at the same stress level, the propagation and penetration of microcracks inside the sample are mainly controlled by the stiff discontinuity, and the sample is more prone to sudden and violent tensile failure along the stiff discontinuity. Based on these experiments, a sudden and violent failure tendency index of deep hard rock with a stiff discontinuity (ψ) is proposed to evaluate the impact of stiff discontinuities on surrounding rock failure in deep engineering, and the characteristics of ψ under typical stress levels are summarized. This research can provide a reference for the prevention and control of sudden disasters caused by stiff discontinuities in deep engineering.

High-resolution source imaging and moment tensor estimation of acoustic emissions during brittle creep of basalt undergoing carbonation

SUMMARY As the high-frequency analogue to field-scale earthquakes, acoustic emissions (AEs) provide a valuable complement to study rock deformation mechanisms. During the load-stepping creep experiments with CO2-saturated water injection into a basaltic sample from Carbfix site in Iceland, 8791 AE events are detected by at least one of the seven piezoelectric sensors. Here, we apply a cross-correlation-based source imaging method, called geometric-mean reverse-time migration (GmRTM) to locate those AE events. Besides the attractive picking-free feature shared with other waveform-based methods (e.g. time-reversal imaging), GmRTM is advantageous in generating high-resolution source images with reduced imaging artefacts, especially for experiments with relatively sparse receivers. In general, the imaged AE locations are found to be scattered across the sample, suggesting a complicated fracture network rather than a well-defined major shear fracture plane, in agreement with X-ray computed tomography imaging results after retrieval of samples from the deformation apparatus. Clustering the events in space and time using the nearest-neighbour approach revealed a group of ‘repeaters’, which are spatially co-located over an elongated period of time and likely indicate crack, or shear band growth. Furthermore, we select 2196 AE events with high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) and conduct moment tensor estimation using the adjoint (backpropagated) strain tensor fields at the locations of AE sources. The resulting AE locations and focal mechanisms support our previously assertion that creep of basalt at the experimental conditions is accommodated dominantly by distributed microcracking.

Surrounding Rock Deformation Mechanism and Control Technology for the Roadway in the Fault-Disturbed Zone under Special-Shaped Coal Pillars

In order to explore the impact of residual special-shaped coal pillars and fault disturbances on the lower layered roadway, this study takes the short-distance coal seam mining in Luwa Coal Mine as the engineering background to explore the surrounding rock deformation mechanism along the mining roadway in the fault-disturbed zone under special-shaped coal pillars, it presents the roadway surrounding rock control technology and it conducts on-site industrial test verification. The study shows that the abutment pressures on the floor of special-shaped coal pillars are distributed as “three peaks and two ridges”. The part beneath coal pillars is mainly disturbed by vertical stresses, while the part below the coal pillar edge is co-affected by vertical stresses and shearing stresses, generating a stress concentration coefficient ranging from 1.26 to 1.38 in the lower coal seam. According to the superposed effects of special-shaped coal pillars and fault disturbance on the mining roadway, the mining roadway is divided into the lower section of goaf, the section crossing the coal pillar edge, the lower section of coal pillars, and the section obliquely crossing the coal pillar edge. According to the above sections, the segmental control strategies of “improving stress distribution on surrounding rock + reinforcing support on special sections” are proposed. A joint control technology of large-diameter drilling hole pressure relief and special section anchor cable reinforcement support was adopted to carry out on-site industrial testing and monitoring. Overall, the convergence rate on the roadway surrounding rock is controlled within 5%, and the deformation of roadway surrounding rock is under effective control.

Rock deformation vs. radon emission: some constraints from shear stress-controlled experiments

Numerous field and laboratory studies have been conducted to investigate the relationship between radon variation and seismic events, as well as the complex link between radon emission and rock deformation mechanisms. However, a clear understanding of this correspondence and systematic observations of these phenomena are still lacking, and recent experimental studies have yet to yield conclusive results. In this study, we investigate the possible relationships between radon migration dynamics and rock deformation at the micro-scale through laboratory experiments using the SHIVA apparatus under shear stress-controlled conditions and simultaneous high-resolution radon measurements. We studied the behaviour of three different lithologies to show that radon emission varies in response to rock deformation and this variation is highly dependent on the mineralogy and microstructure. This study represents the first attempt to define radon gas as an indicator of transient and rapid rock deformation at the micro-scale.

Study on the Mechanism of Surrounding Rock Deformation and Its Control for Roof Cutting Retained Gob-Side Entry in Close-Distance Coal Seams Co-Mining

Sustainable development in coal mining requires a continuous and efficient method of coal extraction. Research shows that gob-side entries retained through roof cutting retained gob-side (RCGE) are vital for improving mining efficiency, enhancing coal recovery rates, and enabling continuous production. However, the mechanism of surrounding rock deformation during close-distance co-mining of coal seams with this technique is not yet clear. For the Jiaokou coal mine in China, due to an unreasonable stagger distance between upper and lower working faces, the gob-side entries retained at the 9102 tailgate and 10102 headgate experience severe rock pressure, leading to significant prop damage and a sharp reduction in the cross-section of the entry. This greatly hampers the reuse of these entries. To investigate this issue, we established a model to study the stress distribution of surrounding rocks at different stagger distances (20 m, 40 m, 60 m, 80 m, and 120 m) through numerical simulation and optimized the support parameters for the retained entries. Our research found that when the subsidence of the roof in the upper coal seam exceeds 0.74 m but is less than 1.33 m, there is sliding instability in the mining body. When the subsidence exceeds 1.33 m, the mining body will rotate and deform, causing significant mining pressure within the retained entry. A stagger distance of 40 m between the upper and lower working faces can reduce pressure on the face during the mining of the lower coal seam. Extensive field measurements of rock pressure revealed that the damage rate of the single column in the gob-side entries of the upper and lower coal seams does not exceed 5% and 1%, respectively. In summary, this study provides a practical method to reduce damage to entries during the mining process, thereby increasing the continuous production capability of the coal mine. This is critical for the sustainable development of coal mining.

A rigid true triaxial apparatus for analyses of deformation and failure features of deep weak rock under excavation stress paths

The squeezing scenario in deep weak rock tunnels can hinder underground construction. However, due to the limitations of test technologies at hand, the real excavation stress path cannot be mimicked in the laboratory. Thus, the large deformation mechanism of deep weak rocks still remains unclear. For this, a true triaxial apparatus (TTA) to investigate the mechanical responses of deep weak rock under excavation stress paths in field and reveal the squeezing mechanism of deep tunnels is assembled and developed at Northeastern University, China. The apparatus can perform instantaneous unloading in σ3 direction based on electromagnetism technology. In addition, uniform loading and deformation measurements can be carried out based on the proposed linked interlocking clamp and antifriction device, even if the sample has a strong dilatation deformation performance. Next, a bore trepanning is designed to capture noiseless acoustic emission (AE) signals for deep weak rock at a low threshold. Finally, two tests were are conducted using this instrument to preliminarily understand the failure and deformation features of deep weak rock based on fractured marble. The results show that the complete stress–strain curves of fractured marble have the characteristics of low strengths and large deformations, and the larger deformation and the more serious failure occur when the fractured marble enters the post-peak state after excavation. Effect of horizontal stress on the mesoscopic deformation and failure mechanism of layered surrounding rock masses in tunnels

The deformation and failure behaviors of layered surrounding rocks under high in-situ stress are important indicators for tunnel stability evaluation. The attitude of bedding planes is too complex, which impedes the understanding of the rock deformation mechanism under different horizontal stress, especially from the microscopic perspective. In this study, high-precision and easy-to-prepare 3D printing materials are used to simulate layered rock masses. The biaxial loading test system is adopted to explore the creep properties of layered rocks during tunnel excavation in the case of different horizontal stress. The mesoscopic deformation field and failure evolution mechanism of the layered surrounding rocks are revealed using digital image correlation technology. The test results are verified with the numerical simulation method. The shear displacement and plastic strain zone of surrounding rocks in the case of different layer dip angles are studied, and the plastic failure region is given. This paper provides significant experimental and theoretical guidance for the excavation and support of layered soft rock tunnels.

Temperature Variation of Rock during Deformation and Fracturing: Particle Flow Modeling Method and Mechanism Analyses

The rock deformation and failure characteristics and mechanisms are very important for stability evaluation and hazard control in rock engineering. The process of rock deformation and failure is often accompanied by temperature changes. It is of great significance to study the characteristics and mechanism of temperature variation in rock under deformation and fracturing for a better understanding of rock failure and to obtain some probable precursor information for guiding the prediction of the mechanical behavior of rock. However, most of the studies are based on observations in the field and laboratory tests, while it is still required to develop an effective method for modeling and calculating the temperature variation of rock during the deformation and failure processes. In this paper, a particle flow modeling method based on energy analyses is proposed for simulating the temperature variation of rocks, considering four temperature effects, including the thermoelastic effect, friction effect, damping effect, and heat conduction effect. The four effects are analyzed, and the theoretical equations have been provided. On this basis, the numerical model is built and calibrated according to the laboratory uniaxial compressive experiment on a marble specimen, and a comparison study has been conducted between the laboratory and numerical experiment results. It is found that the numerical model can well simulate the average value and distribution of the temperature variation of rock specimens, so this method can be applied for studying the mechanism of temperature variation more comprehensively during the whole process of rock deformation and fracturing compared with the continuous modeling methods. With this method, it is shown that the temperature change has three different stages with different characteristics during the uniaxial compression experiments. In the different stages, the different effects play different roles in temperature variation, and stress distribution and crack propagation have obvious influences on the local distribution of temperature. Further investigations have also been conducted in a series of sensitive analyses on the influences of four factors, including the thermal conductivity, friction coefficient, thermal expansion coefficient, and particle size ratio. The results show that they have different influences on the thermal and mechanical behaviors of the rock specimens during the deformation and failure process, while the thermal expansion coefficient and the particle size ratio have more significant impacts than the other two factors. These findings increase our knowledge on the characteristics and mechanism of temperature variation in rock during the deformation and fracturing process, and the proposed modeling method can be used in more studies for deformation and fracturing analyses in rock experiments and engineering.

Evaluation of Real-Time Perception of Deformation State of Host Rocks in Coal Mine Roadways in Dusty Environment

Intelligent mining needs to achieve real-time acquisition of surrounding rock deformation data of roadways and analysis and provide technical support for intelligent mining construction. To solve problems such as significant error, information lag, and low acquisition frequency of surrounding rock monitoring technology at the current stage, a perception method, RSBV of roadway deformation situation, based on binocular vision is proposed, which realizes the dynamic, accurate real-time acquisition of host rocks’ relative deformation in a dusky environment. The low illumination image enhancement method is used to preprocess original images, which reduces the impact of low illumination and high dust; the K-medoids algorithm segments the target image, and the SIFT algorithm extracts feature points from the ROI (region of interest). The influence of eliminating background images on the feature point extraction is revealed, and the efficiency of feature extraction is improved; the method of SIFT feature-matching with epipolar constraints is studied, which improves the accuracy and speed of feature points. The roadway deformation characteristics are analyzed, and the reflective target is used as the monitoring point. A roadway deformation acquisition and analysis platform based on binocular vision is built in a dim environment. Zhang’s method is selected to calibrate the camera parameters, and stereo rectification is carried out for the target motion image. The adaptability of the RSBV method to different surrounding rock deformation scales is studied and compared with the measurement results of the SGBM algorithm. The results show that the error of the RSBV method is controlled within 1.6%, which is 2.88% lower than the average error of the SGBM algorithm. The average time for processing a group of binocular images is 1.87 s, which is only 20% of the SGBM algorithm. The research result provides a reliable theoretical basis for the real-time and accurate evaluation of the surrounding rock deformation mechanism.

Periclase deforms more slowly than bridgmanite under mantle conditions

Transport of heat from the interior of the Earth drives convection in the mantle, which involves the deformation of solid rocks over billions of years. The lower mantle of the Earth is mostly composed of iron-bearing bridgmanite MgSiO3 and approximately 25% volume periclase MgO (also with some iron). It is commonly accepted that ferropericlase is weaker than bridgmanite1. Considerable progress has been made in recent years to study assemblages representative of the lower mantle under the relevant pressure and temperature conditions2,3. However, the natural strain rates are 8 to 10 orders of magnitude lower than in the laboratory, and are still inaccessible to us. Once the deformation mechanisms of rocks and their constituent minerals have been identified, it is possible to overcome this limitation thanks to multiscale numerical modelling, and to determine rheological properties for inaccessible strain rates. In this work we use 2.5-dimensional dislocation dynamics to model the low-stress creep of MgO periclase at lower mantle pressures and temperatures. We show that periclase deforms very slowly under these conditions, in particular, much more slowly than bridgmanite deforming by pure climb creep. This is due to slow diffusion of oxygen in periclase under pressure. In the assemblage, this secondary phase hardly participates in the deformation, so that the rheology of the lower mantle is very well described by that of bridgmanite. Our results show that drastic changes in deformation mechanisms can occur as a function of the strain rate.

Experimental study on mechanically driven migration of fluids in rock salt

Rock salt has been widely used for underground energy storage and waste disposal due to its low permeability, rheological behaviour and self-healing properties. Understanding of rock salt deformation including fluids migration is necessary to ensure the long-term stability of storage and disposal operations. In rock salt, fluids are trapped in fluid inclusions (FIs) formed under various pressure and temperature conditions. The formation of FIs is related to halite crystals growth, dissolution, recrystallisation and deformation. FIs are situated along halite grain boundaries (inter-crystalline) and within halite crystals (intra-crystalline). The FIs influence on mechanical properties of rock salt and deformation mechanisms was studied in natural outcrops and laboratory tests. However, the detailed role of FIs in these processes still requires further research. This study presents experimental laboratory tests performed on pink rock salt from the Kłodawa salt dome (central Poland). Pink rock salt is characterised by FIs occurrence along grain boundaries. FIs are various sizes and shapes. Most of these FIs are multi-phase (gas and liquid phase). Pink rock salt samples (double polished thick sections) were tested under uniaxial compression with simultaneous observations under a polarized microscope. The special device, which fit the size and shape of the microscope stage, was designed and constructed for mechanical tests. The experiment showed that only fluids trapped in FIs located along grain boundaries were active during the whole test. Fluids activity during this experiment were divided into three stages: (1) phase change related to FIs volume change under stress, (2) fluid migration displayed by gas phase movement and (3) fluid release from FIs. For each stage stress values and mechanisms responsible for FIs behaviour were determined. The experimental laboratory tests and their results presented in this paper are unique and provide insight into fluids migration and FIs role in rock salt deformation.

Numerical Simulation Analysis of Mechanical Properties on Rock Brittle–Ductility Transformation Under Different Loading Rates

At present, a large number of physical tests and numerical simulations have been carried out to study the effect of confining pressure on rock deformation mechanism, and some achievements have been achieved; however, the mechanism of rock deformation in actual mine engineering needs to be further studied, for example, rock-burst is actually a unilateral unloading process of rock mass, and this process can not be completed by physical test. RFPA3D was used to simulate the brittle–ductility transformation mechanical properties of rock under different confining pressures in this paper. The damage constitutive equation of rock was derived from continuum damage mechanics; the damage coefficients of different rocks were determined based on the numerical results of stress acoustic emission, so the correctness of rock damage constitutive equation was verified. According to the derived brittle–ductility damage equation and the fitting results of ductility cumulative damage data, it was found that the development trend of rock brittleness stage was almost the same, and the extended separation occurred after entering ductility stage. The larger the Poisson’s ratio was, the longer the ductility stage was. The smaller the Poisson’s ratio was, the shorter the ductility stage was, but the larger the bearing capacity was. At the late loading stage, the ductility cumulative damage of rock showed a linear upward trend, the bearing capacity sharply decreased, the rock stability failure occurred, and the ductility damage coefficient increased gradually. The study on the brittle–ductile mechanical properties of rocks can help to deep mine’s rock-burst prediction and prevention and has significant engineering significance.

Experimental study on the influence of hydrostatic stress on the Lode angle effect of porous rock

To investigate the deformation mechanisms of rock under hydrostatic stress, destructive experiments were conducted on sandstone under different levels of hydrostatic stress and stress Lode angles. The results reveal that the shape of the strength envelope on the π plane gradually changes from the shape of the Lade criterion to the shape of the Drucker-Prage criterion with an increase in hydrostatic stress. Normally, there exists a deviation between the strain and stress paths for porous rocks on the π plane, and the deviation decreases with an increase in stress Lode angle and hydrostatic stress. A rock failure hypothesis based on the rock porous structure was proposed to investigate the reasons for the abovementioned phenomena. It was found that the shear expansion in the minimum principal stress direction is the dominant factor affecting the Lode angle effect (LAE); the magnitude of the hydrostatic stress induces the variation of the porous structure and influences the shear expansion. Therefore, the hydrostatic stress state affects the LAE. The failure hypothesis proposed in this paper can clarify the hydrostatic stress effect, LAE, and the variation of the rock strength envelope shape.

Pseudotachylyte-Mylonites Record of Transient Creep From Inter-Seismic Ductile to Co-Seismic Rupture

Transient creep during an earthquake cycle is very important to understand the rheology of fault and deformation mechanisms in the brittle–plastic transition zone. In this paper, we analyzed the microstructures of samples for mylonites, pseudotachylyte, and cataclasite under optical microscope, SEM, and EBSD, which were collected from the Red River fault in southwest of China, where we uncovered a series of ductile to brittle deformed rocks which recorded transient creep related to earthquakes. The results show that mylonites formed at the inter-seismic creep were overprinted by pseudotachylyte and cataclasite which were produced during co-seismic rupture, and cracks in cataclasite were healed during the post-seismic relaxation. Based on the analysis of the microstructures and deformation mechanism of fault rocks, we propose the oscillation deformation model to explain transient creep of the brittle–plastic transition zone during the seismic cycle in the Red River fault.

Study on deformation mechanism and control technology of surrounding rock during reuse of gob side entry retaining by roof pre-splitting

In this study, we aiming at the problems of severe surrounding rock deformation and support failure during the reuse of gob side entry retaining, we conducted field observations, theoretical analyses, numerical simulations and engineering projects to analyze the surrounding rock deformation mechanism, and we proposed a corresponding combined support technology. The results show that: (1) the surrounding rock failure is mainly affected by the advance abutment pressure, followed by the lateral abutment pressure, and the lateral abutment pressure has a certain lag. (2) According to borehole detection and theoretical analyses, multiple dynamic pressures influence the relationship between roadway support system and surrounding rock state. (3) The high proportion of inelastic zone volume is the main cause of severe surrounding rock deformation. Consequently, we developed a combined support technology, and applied it to an engineering project, realizing roadway stability; thus, the study provides a reference for similar engineering projects.
