The rat race and working time regulation

To what extent, if at all, should a just society adopt public policies that regulate and limit the amount of time people work? Attempts to answer this question face a dilemma: Either, we can adopt a laissez-faire view, according to which governments must refrain from imposing working time policies on the labour market. But this view generates a situation in which many citizens experience deep regret about the balance between work and leisure in their lives. Or, we can endorse an interventionist view that advocates government imposition of working time policies. However, such a view appears to be objectionably perfectionist insofar as it imposes on citizens a particular conception of the ideal balance between work and leisure. This article proposes a way out of this dilemma. It shows that the interventionist view can be defended on the anti-perfectionist grounds that this helps address a collective action problem in the labour market – the working time rat race. Employers often use working time as a proxy for their employees’ productivity and commitment. Those who work particularly long hours are often awarded benefits such as raises or promotions or are spared from dismissals. This makes it individually rational for each worker to work extra hours in an attempt to outcompete colleagues. However, if many workers pursue this strategy, it loses its effectiveness. Workers with preferences for more leisure have a claim to state intervention to remove the rat race when this doesn’t impose disproportionate harm on third parties.

“A JOURNEY TO ARMENIA, TURKEY AND CILICIA” BY THE BISHOP VARDAN ODZNETSI AS AN IMPORTANT SOURCE 
 ON THE HISTORY OF THE CAUCASUS OF THE XVIII–XIX CENTURIES

The paper analyses the content of some of the parts of the work of the Armenian author of the 19th century bishop Vardan Odznetsi, kept in Matenadaran – the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts of Armenia. The full text of the work has not yet been published. The text is unique, as it is one of the last sources, written in the style of the Armenian historical literature of the Middle Ages. In his work, Vardan Odznetsi tells in detail about the court of the Georgian king Heraclius II (1720–1798). It also provides information about the Talysh Khan Mustafa and the Avar Nutsal Ummah Khan, known in historiography under the distorted name of Omar Khan. Thus, the chronicle of Odznetsi covers the history of not only Transcaucasia, but also the North Caucasus. In addition, the author describes in sufficient detail the events of the Crimean War (1853–1856).
 The information, provided by Vardan Odznetsi, is quite important in the context of studies devoted to the anti-Ottoman and anti-Iranian wars of the peoples of the Caucasus. In his work, a special attention is drawn to the scrupulous description of the invasion of Tbilisi in the summer of 1795 by the Iranian shah Aga-Muhammad Khan Kajar. With deep regret he tells about the destruction of the city, believing that this is the fault of the Georgian king, who showed political shortsightedness. In the 1790s Avar nutsal Ummah Khan (1761-1801) started to play an important role in the military-political events taking place in the South Caucasus, which is also mentioned in the work under review. He describes the relations of Umma Khan and his son-in-law Ibrahim-khan of Karabakh, their joint military campaigns on adjacent lands. At the same time, the work under study is an important source describing the transition of the kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti, and subsequently the entire Caucasus, under the protection of the Russian Empire. A study of this manuscript will serve as a more detailed source-study of the history of the Caucasus of the 18th – 19th centuries.

Psychological basis of the image of a dead lover in mythology of transcarpatia and P. Kulish’s story about, why the Peshevtsov pond was dried up in the town of Voronezh

In Ukrainian mythology as in world mythology, there is an idea of the possibility of a love relationship between a human and a demonic creature – a dead lover or a devil. Thus, F. Potushnyak’s article Dead Love in Folk Beliefs (1944) is devoted to this theme. Folk beliefs about demonic lovers precondition the relationship between them and a human, and methods of their overcoming are examined in this article. In the short story About, why the Peshevtsov pond was dried up in the town of Voronezh (1839) written by P. Kulish, we can find a very interesting interpretation of folk beliefs when a dead husband visits his wife. The writer modeled the tragic story of the woman, whose husband disappeared, with the help of folk mythological stories. And because of her deep regret, she became a victim of a demon who appeared in the image of her beloved husband. In the article, the psychological basis of the appearance of visions, in which the main figure is a dead object of love, is analyzed. Through the prism of Jung’s theory, the image of a dead lover is considered as a personification of one of the archetypes of the collective unconscious (Animus, its negative aspect). Destructive display of this image has the same psychological basis both in mythological legends and in P. Kulish’s short story About, why the Peshevtsov pond was dried up in the town of Voronezh. The woman’s consciousness refuses to take the reality as it is and creates an alternative variant for herself – the dead lover comes to her at night (when unconscious dominates – our wishes, fears, etc. are implemented in night dreams). The line between conscious and unconscious life is erased and the woman becomes a hostage of her own fantasy, which removes pain of loss and gives hope to renew the lost emotional and spiritual balance for a moment. Folk stories in the spirit of Christian morality contain “recipes” of fighting a dead lover. However, mostly these rituals cannot help the woman, who is obsessed with love to her dead lover as it happened in P. Kulish’s story.

A Data Augmentation Method Based on Generative Adversarial Networks for Grape Leaf Disease Identification

The identification of grape leaf diseases based on deep learning is critical to controlling the spread of diseases and ensuring the healthy development of the grape industry. Focusing on the lack of training images of grape leaf diseases, this paper proposes a novel model named Leaf GAN, which is based on generative adversarial networks (GANs), to generate images of four different grape leaf diseases for training identification models. A generator model with degressive channels is first designed to generate grape leaf disease images; then, the dense connectivity strategy and instance normalization are fused into an efficient discriminator to identify real and fake disease images by utilizing their excellent feature extraction capability on grape leaf lesions. Finally, the deep regret gradient penalty method is applied to stabilize the training process of the model. Using a total of 4,062 grape leaf disease images, the Leaf GAN model ultimately generates 8,124 grape leaf disease images. The generated grape leaf disease images based on Leaf GAN model can obtain better performance than DCGAN and WGAN in terms of the Frechet inception distance. The experimental results show that the proposed Leaf GAN model generates sufficient grape leaf disease images with prominent lesions, providing a feasible solution for the data augmentation of grape leaf disease images. For the eight prevailing classification models with the expanded dataset, the identification performance based on CNNs indicated higher accuracies, whereby all the accuracies were better than those of the initial dataset with other data augmentation methods. Among them, Xception achieves a recognition accuracy of 98.70% on the testing set. The results demonstrate that the proposed data augmentation method represents a new approach to overcoming the overfitting problem in disease identification and can effectively improve the identification accuracy.

ХАЙП В КОММУНИКАЦИЯХ ЗАРУБЕЖНЫХ КОМПАНИЙ В СВЯЗИ С ДВИЖЕНИЕМ «BLACK LIVES MATTER»

This article deals with the issue of digital communications of companies representing various areas of activity united by one desire – to try to increase public capital by turning to a specific political process taking place in the United States of America. This is a situation that arose after the murder of African American D. Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020. The authors of this article see the problem of modern society in those situations where individuals or organizations focus exclusively on pseudo-actions, touching on a particular socially important issue. This means, for example, the simplest posts on social networks, which are not followed by actions, or such actions that create a pseudo-event in the information space. The famous American cartoon «The Simpsons» is a bright example, whose representatives published a message on a social network in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, and then offered information that can be described as creating a pseudo-event related to the voice of characters in this animated series. The authors of this article studied messages on social networks of more than 70 different foreign companies, evaluated the reaction of the audience, expressed in the number of likes and retweets, as well as the content of these messages. To the deep regret of the authors of the article, a huge number of messages from various organizations were included in the group of pseudo-actions, not real ones. The authors believe that the problem of such hype communications is no less serious for modern society than the very problems around which such communications arise.

Efforts by the journal to promote perspectives of equity, diversity, and inclusion and address disparities.

In February this year, we erroneously published a humanities article that contained racial stereotypes. We retracted the article, expressed our deep regret,1,2 and provided a series of proposed steps to address our processes and culture as related to diversity and inclusion.3 We have continued to evaluate our editorial processes to ensure that American Academy of Neurology (AAN) values are represented in the Journal. Paris or Weimar? Hungarian Writers’ and Intellectuals’ Early Dilemmas in the Construction of their War Culture

In his famous “Paris or Weimar”, Bela Balazs broke off with Paris and the francophilie of his generation. He was not the only one to do it : in the literary journals known for their French orientation as A Het or Nyugat, or in the daily Vilag, authors unanimously announced this rupture with France. However, a more detailed analysis of these journals reveals more nuanced opinions, reflecting « disappointed love » or deep regret. Among conservative or Catholic writers, rejection of France was differently articulated at the beginning of WWI : the former generally kept a low-profile while the latter aroused in a violent Francophobia. Based on literary journals, a few dailies and correspondences and diaries, the article thus reveals the intellectual positions implicitly present in this discourse of complex rupture, and the specificities of the Francophilia rejected during these first years of mobilization.

The Rebel Soldier Who Became Chief Justice of the United States: The Civil War and its Legacy for Edward Douglass White of Louisiana

Edward Douglass White (1844-1921) was appointed associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1894 when he was a sitting U.S. senator, and was elevated to chief justice in 1910. Given his background—White was a Democrat, Confederate veteran, sugar planter and lawyer from New Orleans, and son of a Louisiana governor—one would have expected White to share the legal and political views of others of his background, class, and region, which were generally hostile to federal power and supportive of white supremacy. Yet White was a nationalist on the Supreme Court. He was considered a de facto Republican by many prominent northern Republicans, and was elevated to the chief’s seat by William Howard Taft. As a justice White voted repeatedly to uphold expansive uses of Congress’s regulatory and taxing powers, including powers first exercised by the Union during the Civil War to tax income and raise armies by conscription. White did not have enlightened racial views, and joined the majority of the Court in Plessy v. Ferguson. But he also wrote the Court’s decisions holding unconstitutional that so-called “grandfather clauses” that were used in the South after the war to prevent African-Americans from voting, and voted in favor of civil rights in other important cases. Previous biographers have recognized the importance of White’s experience as a Confederate soldier to his life and later judicial and political outlook. But the details they have published about White’s military service have been only brief and vague, and sometimes simply wrong. Relying on a far broader array of original and secondary sources than any previous study, this paper explores what exactly White did, saw, and experienced during the Civil War. Crucially, though, the story is also one about omissions and even deception by White. A newly-discovered document shows that he lied to Federal interrogators about his war service when he was captured in 1865. In later life White rarely spoke of the war, and when he did he offered almost no details about his service. He failed to correct the record when inaccurate biographical details about his service were published. His actual war service was almost certainly much less extensive and honorable than previous biographers have claimed. The most detailed information we possess shows him joining a marauding guerrilla band in rural Louisiana in the closing months of the war. Later in life, what White did clearly and honestly express about the war was deep regret that it occurred at all, anguish about its human toll and effect on his beloved country, and self-criticism about his youthful service on the Confederate side. This picture that emerges of White and his war service is much more complex than offered in previous biographical studies, and provides a surer foundation for assessing his jurisprudence on the Supreme Court and accurately understanding his place in the country’s political and legal history.

John H. Jackson (1932–2015)

It is with the deepest regret that the Journal records the passing of John Jackson—teacher, scholar, contributor to this Journal and longtime member of its editorial board, and pioneer of international trade and economic law. The following is a tribute to John in recognition of his immense contribution to international law.In 1969, World Trade and the Law of GATT was published. In some sense, this was the beginning of what is known today as international trade law. Based on meticulous research into documents of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which hitherto had barely seen the light of day and certainly not the eyes of scholars, the work was to be”pragmatic” and designed to address the “intricate complexity” of the law of GATT and to be of use to “the government or GATT official, the private attorney and the legal scholar.” The scale was ambitious but characteristically expressed in modest terms.

Kobiety w życiu króla Kazimierza Wielkiego w świetle Annales seu cronicae incliti Regni Poloniae Jana Długosza

Artykuł jest próbą ukazania miejsca kobiet w życiu króla Kazimierza III Wielkiego w oparciu o Annales seu cronicae incliti Regni Poloniae Jana Długosza. Przy referowaniu zagadnienia nie ograniczono się jedynie do żon i miłostek Kazimierza Wielkiego, lecz wspomniano także o jego matce, siostrze oraz córkach. Już u progu jego pierwszego małżeństwa doszło do konfliktu pomiędzy matką Kazimierza, Jadwigą, a nowo poślubioną Anną. Chodziło o to, która z kobiet ma być uważana za królową Polski. Ustąpienie Jadwigi pozwoliło zażegnać ten spór. Kazimierz Wielki miał wielką słabość do kobiet i często popadał w grzech cudzołóstwa. Zwracał uwagę przede wszystkim na ich wygląd zewnętrzny. Utrzymywał wiele kochanek i nierządnic, z którymi się spotykał. Jednak spośród trzech kolejnych żon króla tylko druga, Adelajda, nie mogła wytrzymać tej sytuacji i po wielu latach przeżytych prawie bez obecności króla wróciła do ojcowskiego domu. Kazimierz nieraz traktował kobiety przedmiotowo i niejednej z nich wyrządził krzywdę swym postępowaniem. Troszczył się natomiast o swoje córki i inne kobiety związane z nim więzami krwi. Wiele światła na jego postawę wobec kobiet wnosi jego odniesienie do Matki Bożej. Z jednej strony oddawał hołd Maryi czczonej w Wiślicy, a z drugiej strony nie potrafił się powstrzymać od polowania w święto maryjne. Kazimierz mógł wielokrotnie obiecywać swoją poprawę i porzucenie cudzołóstwa, nawet papieżowi, ale miał słabą wolę i wciąż wracał do starych grzechów. W opinii Jana Długosza karą Bożą za rozpustę Kazimierza Wielkiego było to, że ród królewski wyginął. Należy jednak zauważyć, że król otaczał troską wdowy oraz ludzi biednych, pośród nich także kobiety. Dlatego gdy umarł, kobiety z ludu żegnały go z wielkim żalem.

Competing Environmental Ethics in Cooper’s The Pioneers

This essay examines the environmental worthiness of James Fenimore Cooper’s The Pioneers and analyzes the various and competing environmental ethics that Cooper introduces in this novel through his descriptions of the different relationships between humans and the natural world. Among these different environmental ethics are the anthropocentric view of nature, the idea that the natural environment should be valued only for the satisfaction of human needs and interests, and the view that nature has intrinsic value and that it should be valued for its own sake. This essay also examines Cooper’s own preferences and attitudes towards these different environmental ethics. It highlights Cooper’s deep regret and disappointment at the thoughtless destruction of nature, the rapid disappearance of wildlife from the American wilderness and the degradation of the nonhuman natural environment. For these reasons, this essay underlines Cooper’s stature as a pioneer of American literary environmentalism and as an early precursor of the modern Environmental Movement. Un objet culturel digital. Le cas de la « restauration » de l’Ecce Homo de Borja

In August 2012, the Centro de Estudios Borjanos of Borja, in Spain, published on his blog his “deep regrets” after having discovered what the centre calls an “unspeakable act”: a mural painting, situated in the Sanctuary of Mercy Church, has been restored in such a manner that the original subject – the Man of Sorrow – can hardly be recognized. The case is rapidly diffused by the international press and resulted in an unexpected dimension, sparking mockery and empathy. Almost all commentators in the press and on the Internet described the case as “botched restoration”. In contrast, the face of the Ecce Homo, transformed by this “restoration” gave rise to a variety of reinterpretations on the Internet. This article seeks to analyze the phenomenon of a collective re-appropriation made possible by the Web 2.0.1.

Este artículo reflexiona sobre dos autores que fueron testigos del declive de sendos periodos histórico-políticos, pero en cuyo pensamiento sigue presente el imaginario político que caracterizaba el período pretérito, del mismo modo que sus textos analizan las causas que produjeron tal declive.Así, Isócrates persigue la defensa del ideal democrático griego y la vuelta a la antigua constitución ateniense, denunciando los errores cometidos y proponiendo las condiciones que posibilitarían su restauración; Tocqueville, por su lado, escribe El Antiguo Régimen y la Revolución motivado por el profundo rechazo que las secuelas del torbellino revolucionario produjeron en él, analizando los desaciertos y las motivaciones que hicieron posible el cataclismo histórico puesto en marcha por el proceso revolucionario, a la vez que desenmascara el sistema de opresión y despotismo que se ha consumado con el triunfo de la Revolución.
