Summary A method of gastroscopy utilizing intravenous anesthetic agents and muscle relaxants has been presented. Surital Sodium and Pentothal Sodium were employed. When combined with d-tubocurarine or Anectine Chloride, sufficient muscle relaxation has been provided to allow the use of relatively small doses of the intravenous short-acting barbiturates. Deep planes of anesthesia have been avoided. With lighter planes, temporary analgesia and amnesia have been provided and no patient has had any recollection of his gastroscopic experience. No anesthetic complications have been observed. Using the methods described, 192 patients have been gastroscoped; a report of 122 of these cases appeared in the earlier study 1 and 70 cases are reported in the present study. No examination failures have occurred. The examinations have been technically satisfactory, local visual observations have been more exact, the opportunity for multiple gastroscopic biopsies has been enhanced, and the examination affords virtually no discomfort to the patient. It is felt that in selected cases this method of gastroscopy offers an additional and satisfactory approach.
