The preconditioning phase of MEDOC 1969—I. Observations

Deep convective mixing was observed in February 1969 in the northwest Mediterranean Sea, near 42°N, 5°E ( MEDOC Group, 1970 ). In this paper, the hydrographic conditions preceding that event are described and it is suggested that the local bathymetry may have been a significant factor in determining where the deep mixing occurred.
