The impact of urbanization on environmental degradation in Jakarta

Background: The urbanization discussed in this paper refers to the process of expansion in the proportion of the population living in urban areas. Urbanization is seen as one of the processes of increasing population that drives the functional change of an area, from rural to urban activities. The case discussed in this paper is urbanization occurring in Jakarta city. This paper aims to examine the relationship between urbanization and the decline in environmental quality, especially in Jakarta city. Method: In assessing environmental quality, the reference used follows that set by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, namely the Environmental Quality Index (EQI) which consists of three elements, namely the Water Quality Index (WQI), Air Quality Index (AQI) and Land Cover Quality Index (LCQI), so the variables used are WQI, AQI and LCQI. The data collection method used in this paper is secondary data collection through literature review and official data sources from related stakeholders. The collected data is then analyzed descriptively to determine the relationship between urbanization and each of these variables. Results: Based on the literature review and the results of the LCQI data used, it appears that there is a negative correlation between population growth and land cover in Jakarta Province. This condition is marked by an increase in floods and also an increase in surface temperature. In terms of air quality, this paper found a negative correlation between urbanization and AQI. However, for the condition in 2013 - 2018, a positive correlation was found between the population and AQI. Conclusion: This indicates that an increase in population is not always followed by a decrease in environmental quality. Meanwhile, in relation to water quality, population growth from the urbanization process has a significant impact on water quality in Jakarta. Novelty/Originality of this study: The development of a sophisticated and comprehensive correlation analysis method between population growth and environmental quality indicators (IKLH, IKA, IKU), which integrates spatial and temporal data, provides a predictive tool that city governments can use to monitor, manage, and plan mitigation strategies for the impacts of urbanization on the environment more effectively and proactively, and supports data-based decision-making in sustainable urban planning.

Analysis of Sea and River Water Quality Standards Due to Operations and Domestic Activities in the Sanur Port Area, Bali

The development of an area has impacts, both positive and negative impacts. The positive impact is in the form of regional economic growth, employment and development of the surrounding regions. The negative impact is the disruption of the environmental ecosystem and a decrease in environmental quality due to waste generated from development operations, in the form of solid waste (garbage) and liquid waste. The increasing pollution load is also caused by public awareness and business activities in upstream areas that do not manage waste properly, which ultimately leads to all of the waste accumulating in water bodies and causing changes in water quality standards. Sanur Port, which is one of the development centers in its operations, is very vulnerable to environmental pollution impacts. The pollution mechanism originates from activities around Sanur Port and domestic activities which are discharged into rivers and seas in the Sanur area. This research aims to analyze the quality of river water and sea water caused by activities around Sanur Port and community activities based on Decree of the Minister of Environment Number 51 of 2004 and determine the pollution index. Water quality standards use Bali Governor Regulation no. 16 of 2016 concerning Environmental Quality Standards and Quality Standard Criteria for Environmental Damage. This research uses a quantitative approach by collecting primary data from direct observations in the field and secondary data based on previous research reports and government reports. The research results show that TDS in the rainy season tends to be lower than in the dry season, both in the results of testing samples of Abianbase river water, the results of testing samples of sea water in front of the Mak Beng Restaurant and sea water samples in the Sanur Port Pool. In front of Mak Beng, ammonia levels during the rainy season are higher than during the dry season. Ammonia levels in the Abianbase River and sea water in front of Sanur port are lower during the rainy season compared to the dry season. The presence of Coliform bacteria and E. coli shows a tendency to decrease during the rainy season. This decrease is thought to be caused by leaching by rainwater entering marine waters and retailing and changes in ocean currents during the rainy season.

Dampak Pembangunan Perumahan Terhadap Perubahan Kondisi Lingkungan Di Desa Palasari Kecamatan Legok Kabupaten Tangerang

Rapid population growth and regional development will affect environmental changes. These changes will inevitably have an impact on human life directly or indirectly, with positive results such as meeting human needs and local and regional economic growth, as well as negative results such as a decrease in environmental quality, the impact analysis method produces data obtained then presented in the form of tables, graphs and then described so as to produce information. The results show that in the period between 2010 - 2022 there has been a growth in housing development which resulted in a reduction in the use of rice fields with an area of 66.6 Ha out of a total of 170.0 Ha. In addition, water sources in the dry season have an impact on the community in the area around the housing after the development, In the analysis of total respondents showed 92% impact on land use, 86% impact on water sources, 59% impact on road conditions, 52% impact on drainage.

Dampak Ekspansi Kelapa Sawit terhadap Perubahan Ekonomi dan Lingkungan

This research aims to analyze changes in the structure of community livelihoods and analyze losses from the impact of oil palm expansion on ecology. The research method used is qualitative research, using in-depth interview techniques, observation and documentation. The results of the research show that there is continuity of interaction between society and its economy, which is marked by changes in the structure of the community's livelihood which is now also developing the cultivation of oil palm plantations thereby improving the community's economy, while the sustainability of community interaction with the environment is still visible because the community's environmental ethics still shows an anthropocentristic view of environmental ethics. , The ethic of anthropocentrism causes a decrease in environmental quality and environmental damage in Pelawe Village and Tambangan Village, District. BTS Ulu Cecar, Musi Rawas District in the form of road damage, environmental pollution, land fires and decreased biodiversity. So it can be concluded that the impact of oil palm expansion has a positive impact on the economic dimension and still has a negative impact on the environmental dimension. ​Keywords : Economic, Environmental, Palm Oil Expansion, Human Interaction

Digital financial inclusion in the context of financial development: Environmental destruction or the driving force for technological advancement

This study employs the panel vector autoregression model to investigate how digital financial inclusion (DFI), technological advancement, environmental conditions, and economic growth are interconnected in 16 low financial development countries (LFDCs) and 29 high financial development countries (HFDCs) from 2015 to 2020. The results of the impulse response function reveal that in LFDCs, DFI enhances environmental quality while promoting technological progress. However, this improvement in environmental quality results in a decline in economic growth in these countries. In HFDCs, the promotion of DFI results in economic growth; however, it is accompanied by a decrease in environmental quality. Furthermore, the results of variance decomposition demonstrate that the interconnection among DFI, economic growth, environmental quality, and technological progress is more closely related in LFDCs than in HFDCs. Based on the findings, we recommend relevant policy implications for the respective country groups.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF URBANIZATION ON LAND USE COMPATIBILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY IN PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE

This study examined the environmental impact of urbanization on land use compatibility and environmental quality in Port Harcourt Metropolis. The study adopted the multi-method research, integrating both qualitative and quantitative approaches through the convergent mixed method technique, where 399 household heads were selected from 189,317 household heads using the Taro Yamane formula. Questionnaires and checklists were administered to the household heads and ten (10) key informants respectively. Descriptive statistics, critical informant content analysis, and Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques were employed for data presentation and analysis for the study. Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA) was employed to test stated hypothesis for the study. The findings revealed numerous environmental changes resulting from land use/land cover change activities in the area to include deforestation, which accounted for 20.5%, degradation, which represented 19.7%, forest degradation corresponding to 19.7%, generation of waste causing pollution, accounting for 20% and decrease in environmental quality corresponding to 20.1% of the total sampled population of the study. Additionally, the impact of urbanization on environmental quality were revealed as flooding, which accounted for 11% of the sampled respondents as well as air pollution, representing 10.8%. Others ecological disaster (8.7%), waste disposal damping (8.9%), land use incompatibility (7.4%), slum developments and urban heat island (9.6%), land use conflict (8.1%), reduced wetland (8.4%), environmental degradation (7.4%), land use conversion (6.8%), overcrowding of buildings (7.1%) and habitat contamination (7.9%). The study concludes that rapid urbanization has significantly impacted land use compatibility and environmental sustainability in Port Harcourt metropolis. It is therefore recommended amongst others that the government should implement stringent urban development control measures to regulate land use and ensure sustainable urban growth as well as establish policies that limit haphazard expansion and promote planned development.

Studi Sektor Keuangan terhadap Kualitas Lingkungan di ASEAN-5

This research to critically review the influence of the dimensions of financial sector development on carbon dioxide emissions in ASEAN-5 developing countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines. The development cycle of the financial sector can increase and decrease environmental quality. We use the Panel Least Square (PLS) model to analyze the dynamics of the financial sector on environmental quality in annual data for 1983 - 2020 in five ASEAN-5 countries. The results of this study found that economic growth, foreign direct investment, and financial development have a positive effect on carbon dioxide emissions. However, interest rates have a negative effect on carbon dioxide emissions. Moreover, this study found that the development of the financial sector has a negative effect on environmental quality. This means that every increase in economic growth, FDI, and financial development has an effect on a decrease in environmental quality. Therefore, this finding is important for policy makers in ASEAN-5 countries to reduce dependence on investment that is not environmentally friendly as a factor of production and increase green financing in every activity in the financial sector.

Diversity and the role of butterflies species at PT Permata Sawit Mandiri, West Kalimantan

The use of chemicals indicates a cost inefficiency and makes oil palm plantations considered environmentally unfriendly causing a decrease in environmental quality. These problems indicate the need to increase the role of biodiversity to optimize oil palm productivity and be environmentally friendly. Based on this, research is needed on the diversity and role of butterfly species in palm oil agrosystems. The purpose of this study is to identify the species of butterflies in various land cover and analyzes the role of butterflies in the palm oil agrosystem. The research was conducted at PT Permata Sawit Mandiri, West Kalimantan. Diversity data was obtained through pollard transect and trapping methods, while role data was obtained through the literature study method. The pollard transect method was carried out along a line measuring 2 × 1,000 m long and 10 m wide at 08.00-11.00. The trapping method was carried out by placing 5 traps in each observation line for 3 × 24 hours. The results showed that there were 190 individuals belonging to Papilionidae (3 species), Pieridae (8 species), Nymphalidae (37 species), Lycaenidae (7 species), and Hesperidae (4 species). There are variations of butterfly species between land covers with the highest number of species found in rubber gardens (27 species). 7 species of butterflies have the potential as oil palm pollinators with the highest potential owned by Elymnias hypermnestra. The Papilionidae (Graphium agamemnon, Papilio polytes, Papilio memnon) can be environmental bioindicators because more sensitive to the environment.

PENEGAKAN HUKUM TERHADAP PERTAMBANGAN EMAS TANPA IZIN (PETI) SEBAGAI UPAYA PENGENDALIAN DAMPAK LINGKUNGAN DI KECAMATAN SINTANG KABUPATEN SINTANG

Gold mining without a permit is one of the activities that results in a decrease in environmental quality, because gold mining activities use mercury to separate gold ore from rocks until the refining process. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the implementation of law enforcement against gold mining without a permit and controlling the environmental impact of gold mining without a permit in Sintang District, Sintang Regency. The type of research is sociological juridical. Data collection by interview and observation was then analyzed by qualitative methods. Unlicensed gold mining is caused by economic factors, education and the community feels they have the right to manage natural resources. Gold mining law enforcement without a permit applies criminal law with the imposition of fines and is still not optimal due to several constraints on the location of miners moving around, the absence of regional regulations related to PETI and community resistance. The government's efforts to control environmental impacts on water pollution from PETI activities are monitoring water quality conditions on a regular basis.

Health education for housewife ini utilizing household waste

The volume of waste originating from households is increasing day by day, this condition will cause new problems such as disease outbreaks and a decrease in environmental quality. The purpose of this community service is to improve and empower housewives in managing organic waste originating from household organic waste. The method of this program is health education with material explanations, demonstrations, and discussions. As a result, participants know the steps to make compost/fertilizer from household waste and are able to produce it properly.

Analisis Pengendalian Kebisingan Melalui Pemetaan Untuk Mengurangi Paparan Populasi di Area Pelabuhan Batu Ampar Kota Batam

Batu Ampar Port is the largest loading and unloading port of the three existing loading and unloading port facilities in Batam and the largest port for manufactured goods used by companies to supply the industrial sector in Batam. In addition to having a positive impact, the Batu Ampar port also has a negative impact in the form of a decrease in environmental quality, especially the noise level generated by activities in the Batu Ampar Port area. In this study the noise sampling process used the Svantek tool, sampling was carried out for 24 hours with a time limit of 24 intervals, then sampling was carried out for 10 minutes at each time interval. The research results obtained were that from all sampling points the highest noise was in the East Pier area of 70 – 78.5 dB(A) at 08:00 – 23:00 WIB. While the area with the lowest noise level is in the BPJS flat area of 54.7 – 73.5 dB(A) at 06:00 – 05:00 WIB. It can be concluded that many of the noise values obtained exceed the quality standards in accordance with Kepmen LH No. 48 of 1996. This was due to several factors, namely loading and uploading of very dense containers which resulted in more and more work activities. Noise elimination measures in the Batu Ampar port area are important to do considering the results of noise measurements still exceed the quality standards, Barriers are one of the technologies that can be applied to reduce noise in the Batu Ampar port, Batam, both natural and artificial barriers, so the Batu Ampar port noise problem can be solved.

The relationship of environmental knowledge and environmental care attitude of students

The environment as a place where living things live has undergone significant changes which have resulted in a decrease in environmental quality. The level of students' understanding and awareness of the environment greatly influences the existing environmental conditions. However, the fact is that environmental knowledge possessed by students has not been fully applied in their environment. This study aimed to ascertain the relationship between students' environmental knowledge and environmental attitudes. This study employed a survey method with a correlational design for its research. Class X MIPA students from SMA Negeri 1 Banyuputih comprised the entire study population. The technique of sampling employed is saturated sampling. The data collection technique is by using a questionnaire on environmental knowledge and environmental attitudes which contains statements based on a Likert score. Students' environmental knowledge correlated with their environmental care attitude, with a Sig. 0.00 < 0.05.

The effect of income inequality and economic growth on carbon dioxide emission

Most of the developing and emerging countries are focusing to increase economic growth, enhance the living standard of the people, and reduce income inequality. Increasing economic growth through the factors such as agriculture, energy use for production, and other related activities can harm the environment. Considering this situation, this study utilizes data from the Belt and Road Initiative countries for the period of 1999 and 2018 to explore the nexus between income inequality, agricultural value added, and carbon dioxide using two-step system GMM model. The findings of the study indicate that income inequality, economic growth, energy consumption, and agriculture significantly contribute to an increase in carbon emissions and a decrease in environmental quality. On the other hand, the findings also indicate that manufacturing and service industries significantly contribute to an improvement in environmental quality by reducing carbon emissions. The findings lend even more credence to the environmental Kuznets curve, but the results do not indicate that there is a strong relationship between income inequality and economic growth. The outcomes of this study have crucial policy implications for the sample countries to build environmental regulations.

Amazon Rainforest Deforestation and Indigenous People Movement in Preserving Environmental Conservation

Background: The Amazon forest is one of the areas experiencing the largest deforestation in the world and this causes a decrease in environmental quality that occurs in its region, and Brazil is responsible for half of the deforestation in the Amazon because deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon region has the largest percentage compared to other regions. Objective: In line with the formulation of the problem described above, the purpose of writing this paper is to find out why there is a decline in environmental quality and how the role and efforts of Brazilian indigenous people are to protect the environment in the Amazon Forest region. Method: The researchers used qualitative approach here. The data were obtained from various documents, including journals and news from different platforms. The researcher analyzed the data by reading every document thoroughly and concluding the result. Result: The result of the conversion of forest land in the Amazon is that other lands are easier and faster to evict as well when compared to the first time this exploitation activity was carried out in the 1970s to mid-2000s. Large areas of rainforest in the Amazon were eventually filled with livestock, soybean farming, excavation of dams and minerals, as well as clearing of land for urban projection and colonialization projects. Conclusion: From this writing, it can be concluded that the deforestation that occurs in the Amazon Forest is caused by human activities or irresponsible parties who turn the forest into land for personal gain.

Sustainability of Slum Upgraded Area, Case of Mojosongo, Surakarta, Indonesia

Sustainable development is a challenge in urban development, especially in a slum area. Management of slum is not optimal, and several slums become slums again after upgrading due to the absence of environmental management, such as Mojosongo Housing, Surakarta City, Indonesia. This article aims to create policy recommendations for environmental quality improvement in slum. The research uses a quantitative method. Secondary data were obtained from related agencies regarding environmental conditions, population data, and policies related to slum management. Primary data was collected via observation and questionnaires to 30 respondents, consisting of natives and immigrants in Mojosongo Housing. The analysis technique uses a comparative analysis of data and literature review. The results show that social and economic aspects have been proven to cause a decrease in environmental quality. The challenge of slum management in strategic areas to be sustainable is via community empowerment of social and economic aspects of livelihoods. In addition, supervision and control of development for the public interest are recommended to be more effective by applying police power (an instrument of zoning regulation) and a taxation mechanism.

Environmental management efforts due to landslides in Lunyuk Rea Sumbawa

Indonesia is located in the movement of tectonic plates that collide with each other, namely the Eurasian plate, the Pacific plate, and the India-Australia plate, causing many changes in geological configurations that can cause disasters. Landslide disaster often occur in Lunyuk Rea Village which causes a decrease in environmental quality. This study aims to determine how the environmental management efforts due to landslides for environmental preservation. This study uses a survey method with a quantitative analysis approach based on topographic conditions in the field, spatial identification using remote sensing imagery, and digital elevation models as well as qualitative analysis by dividing land use classification, rock types, soil types, rainfall intensity. The results of the analysis of the level of environmental damage in Lunyuk Rea Village are included in the moderately damaged and heavily damaged categories. The environmental management strategy in Lunyuk Rea Village is to apply vegetative, mechanical, chemical, and normative methods.

Identifikasi Ruang Terbuka Hijau (RTH) Di Kota Ambon

Introduction: Greenery open space proportion in the city is, at least, 30 (thirty) percent of the city area. The proportion for public greenery open space (GOS) in the city is, at least, 20 (twenty) percent of the city area. Meanwhile, the proportion for private greenery open space (GOS) in the city is 10 (ten) percent. Hence, the proportion identification is needed, and availability of greenery open space (GOS) in Ambon City is adjusted with the provision of Act Number 26 of 2007 concerning Spatial Planning.Purposes of the Research: This research aims to identify the proportion and availability of greenery open space in Ambon.Methods of the Research: This research is doctrinal research using secondary data. The secondary data used is primary legal material, secondary legal material, and tertiary legal material. Library research is used as technique of data collection. Furthermore, technique of analysis data used in this research is qualitative data analysis with historical approach.Results of the Research: The Significance of total population also affects the decrease of air quality in the environment. The decrease of environmental quality can be returned by preserve the amount of greenery open space as stated in the applicable statutory provisions. The availability of greenery open space is also affected by the remaining amount of carbon dioxide emissions produced both from motorized vehicles and humans, because the carbon dioxide produced is directly proportional to the population. Total carbon dioxide emissions produced is 393,295.56 ton/year. Thus, the need of Greenery Open Space in Ambon is 10,783.39 ha, with details; greenery open space for public is 7,188.92 ha and for private is 3,594.46 ha from total population of 371,650 people with area of 35,944.62 ha. The need for ideal greenery open space in Ambon is still sufficient to absorb the remaining carbon dioxide emissions.

Local Sustainability Performance and Its Spatial Interdependency in Urbanizing Java Island: The Case of Jakarta-Bandung Mega Urban Region

Jakarta–Bandung Mega Urban Region (JBMUR), located in the western part of Java Island, Indonesia, is experiencing rapid regional development which can be observed from its increase in population density, massive changes of land-use from agricultural land into built-up area, rapid development of infrastructure and facilities, and advances in economic activities. Unfortunately, problems related to sustainability emerge along with this rapid regional development, primarily in decrease in environmental quality and social performance, leading to unsustainable development. This study aims: (1) to develop indicators promoting sustainable development at the subdistrict level, named the local sustainability index (LSI), utilizing factor analysis; (2) to observe local-scale spatial interdependency by employing local indicator of spatial association (LISA) statistics; and (3) to identify regional clusters based on LSI scores using K-means clustering method. Our LISA results show that spatial interdependency of local sustainability performances exists between local-scale spatial units: the LSI of a subdistrict is influenced by the sustainability state of the surrounding areas. Meanwhile, the clustering results show that most subdistricts in JBMUR are categorized as members of cluster 1 with low LSI values in economic and social dimensions but moderate in environmental dimensions.

Analysis of Ranjo Batu Community Perception of Unlicensed Gold Mining Activities on Environmental Quality

Since 2008, the activity of gold mining without a permit in Ranjo Batu Village has always been a polemic. There have been pros and cons in the community. Some people get various benefits, but others feel disadvantaged, giving rise to various perceptions. In this article, we focus more on the environmental aspect. The most apparent impact of mining activities is a decrease in environmental quality, but some people seem to ignore it because a pragmatic view is maintained. This study aims to comprehensively determine the publics perception of the environmental aspects of gold mining activities without a permit in Ranjo Batu Village. The research method uses descriptive and quantitative data. Data were obtained by distributing valid and reliable questionnaires to 95 respondents from a total population of 1,736 people. The descriptive analysis method will use the descriptive analysis method a percentage with the category of respondent achievement level (TCR). The results showed that the publics perception of environmental aspects was included in the unfavorable category, 53.61%. This perception score indicates that illegal gold mining from a community perspective hurts the environment, both in the water, on land, and in the air.

Fatty acid-based index development in estuarine organisms to pinpoint environmental contamination

Estuaries have long been preferred areas of human settlement, where multiple anthropogenic activities take place, which have contributed to a significant decrease in environmental quality of these ecosystems. Accordingly, environmental monitoring and management have long relied on the development of tools that summarize and simplify complex information and provide direct interpretation of quality status. Here, the fatty acid profiles of three abundant estuarine species, namely Hediste diversicolor, Carcinus maenas and Pomatoschistus microps, were used to develop and validate a multimetric index, based on the Euclidean dissimilarities of profiles between sites, in response to contamination gradient in a large urban estuary. Spatial differences were generally related to unsaturated fatty acids (mono- and polyunsaturated, of the n−3 and n−6 series) in all species, albeit more pronounced in P. microps. Multivariate models returned high classification accuracies for the three sampled sites, varying from 73.3% in the invertebrate species to 100.0% in the fish species. Results show the applicability of the developed FA-based index, particularly due to the easy of communication, for managers and the public alike, but also highlight the need for prior validation on species suitability or sensitivity to depict environmental contamination.
