Decrease of mast cells in regional lymph nodes in response to allogeneic antigens and syngeneic tumor antigens.

The absolute number of mast cells in regional lymph nodes decreases on the 5th day after stimulation by allogeneic lymphocytes and semisyngeneic leukaemic cells, despite the enlargement of stimulated lymph nodes. It is postulated that the reaction of lymphatic mast cells could be a sensitive test for tissue incompatibility, and probably also for the presence of tumor associated antigens.

Decrease of mast cells in W/Wv mice and their increase by bone marrow transplantation

Production of tissue mast cells was evaluated in genetically anemic mice of W/Wv genotype and was found to be abnormal. In the skin of adult W/Wv mice the number of mast cells/cm was less than 1% of the number observed in the congeneic +/+ mice. No mast cells were detectable in other tissues of the W/Wv mice. After transplantation of bone marrow cells from +/+ mice the number of mast cells in the skin, stomach, caecum, and mesentery of the W/Wv mice increased to levels similar to those of the +/+ mice. These results show that the W/Wv mouse is a useful tool for the investigations concerning the physiologic roles and the origin of mast cells.

Der Einfluß von Histamin und fettreicher Diät auf die Anzahl der Gewebsmastzellen der Ratte

The authors investigated the number of mast cells in the myocardium, mesentery and lip of rats after 13 weeks of treatment. During this period the animals were fed on atherogenic diet and had a daily injection of histamine. In the organs examined a decrease in mast cells was noted. Treatment with either atherogenic diet or histamine resulted in a reduction of the number of mast cells in both myocardium and lip, whereas a significant decrease of mast cells in the mesentery could not be recorded. It must be assumed that hyperlipemia as well as an increased permeability of vessels caused by histamine lead to an increased influx of fat into the tissue. The decrease of stainable mast cells may thus be attributed to: 1. the increased influx of fat into the tissue which causes a degranulation of mast cells, impairing their metachromatic tingibility. 2. A chronic hyperlipemia that will lead to an overfunction of tissue mast cells diminishing the count of these cells.

Tissue mast cells, histamine and 'slow reacting substance' in anaphylactic reaction in guinea pig.

AbstractAnaphylactic reaction was produced in vitro in isolated guinea‐pig tissue. Histamine and ‘slow reacting substance’ (‘SRS’) in different tissues occurred in amounts proportional to the mast‐cell population. The occurrence of these substances was attended with a reduction of the number of tissue mast cells. When the appearance of histamine and ‘SRS’ was blocked by enzyme inhibitors, there was no decrease in mast cells. It is suggested that the tissue mast cells may be the common source of both histamine and ‘SRS’ in anaphylactic reaction.
