Introduction: Isolation and depression in the context of pandemic was something that generated controversy. The fact that from one day to the next older adults could not see their loved ones because they could not leave their homes, or nursing homes, caused the quality of life to decrease. The problem is posed: What is the relationship between isolation and depression in older adults in Argentina in the period 2020 - 2022? Material and methods: The design of the study is a literature review for which a search and evaluation of the existing literature and previous research on depression, isolation and pandemic will be carried out through the databases PubMed, Google Academic, Scielo, etc. inclusion criteria were used; adults over 65 years of age in the context of pandemic between the years 2020 and 2022. Search in English and Spanish. Results: An exhaustive bibliographic search was carried out through various academic storage sites such as PubMed, Google Academic, Cohrane library, among others. Analyzing in depth 18 articles. Conclusion: The imposition of mandatory quarantine by COVID - 19 is associated with decline in mood and quality of life. Also with the decline in care in older adults in Argentina

The shape of the change: Cumulative and incremental changes in daily mood during mobile-app-supported mindfulness training.

Understanding of the exact trajectories of mood improvements during mindfulness practice helps to optimize mindfulness-based interventions. The Mindfulness-to-Meaning model expects mood improvements to be linear, incremental, and cumulative. Our findings align with this expectation. We used multilevel growth curve models to analyze daily changes in positive mood reported by 190 Polish participants during 42 days of a mobile-app-supported, mindfulness-based intervention. The daily positive mood increased among 83.68% of participants. Participants who started the training reported worse mood improved more and faster than participants with better mood at the baseline. Dispositional mindfulness and narcissism - individual difference variables associated with high vs. low emotion regulation ability, respectively - were not associated with mood improvement trajectories. A small group of participants (16.32%) showed a steady decline in positive mood during the intervention. The results underscore the importance of a more comprehensive understanding of individual variability in benefiting from mindfulness-based interventions.

Exploring the pathogenesis of depression and potential antidepressants through the integration of reverse network pharmacology, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics.

Depression is characterized by a significant and persistent decline in mood and is currently a major threat to physical and mental health. Traditional Chinese medicine can effectively treat depression with few adverse effects. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the use of reverse network pharmacology and computer simulations to identify effective ingredients and herbs for treating depression. Differentially expressed genes associated with depression were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus database, after which enrichment analyses were performed. A protein-protein interaction network was constructed using the STRING database to screen core targets. The Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform database was used to screen ingredients related to these core targets, and the core ingredients were screened by constructing the "Targets-Ingredients-Herbs" network. Drug evaluation analysis was performed using the SwissADME and ADMETlab platforms, according to Lipinski Rule of 5. The binding between the targets and ingredients was simulated using molecular docking software. The binding stability was determined using molecular dynamics analysis. The "Ingredients-Herbs" network was constructed, and we annotated it for its characteristics and meridians. Finally, the selected herbs were classified to determine the formulation for treating depression in traditional Chinese medicine. The pathogenesis of depression was associated with changes in SPP1, Plasminogen activator inhibitor 1, CCNB1 protein, CCL3, and other genes. Computer simulations have verified the use of quercetin, luteolin, apigenin, and other ingredients as drugs for treating depression. Most of the top 10 herbs containing these ingredients were attributed to the liver meridian, and their taste was symplectic. Perilla Frutescen, Cyperi Rhizoma, and Linderae Radix, the main components of "Tianxiang Zhengqi Powder," can treat depression owing to Qi stagnation. Epimedium and Citicola, the main traditional Chinese herbs in "Wenshen Yiqi Decoction," have a positive effect on depression of the Yang asthenia type. Fructus Ligustri Lucidi and Ecliptae Herba are from the classic prescription "Erzhi Pills" and can treat depression of the Yin deficiency type. This study identified the key targets and effective medicinal herbs for treating depression. It provides herbal blend references for treating different types of depression according to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine.

Network analysis of cold cognition and depression in middle-aged and elder population: the moderation of grandparenting.

Cognitive decline and negative emotions are common in aging, especially decline in cold cognition which often co-occurred with depression in middle-aged and older adults. This study analyzed the interactions between cold cognition and depression in the middle-aged and elder populations using network analysis and explored the effects of grandparenting on the cold cognition-depression network. The data of 6,900 individuals (≥ 45 years) from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were used. The Minimum Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Epidemiology Research Center Depression Scale-10 (CESD-10) were used to assess cold cognition and depressive symptoms, respectively. Centrality indices and bridge centrality indices were used to identify central nodes and bridge nodes, respectively. Network analysis showed that nodes "language ability" and "depressed mood" were more central nodes in the network of cold cognition and depression in all participants. Meantime, nodes "attention," "language ability" and "hopeless" were three key bridge nodes connecting cold cognition and depressive symptoms. Additionally, the global connectivity of the cold cognition and depression network was stronger in the non-grandparenting than the grandparenting. The findings shed a light on the complex interactions between cold cognition and depression in the middle-aged and elder populations. Decline in language ability and depressed mood can serve as predictors for the emergence of cold cognitive dysfunction and depression in individuals during aging. Attention, language ability and hopelessness are potential targets for psychosocial interventions. Furthermore, grandparenting is effective in alleviating cold cognitive dysfunction and depression that occur during individual aging.

Irradiation and lithium treatment alter the global DNA methylation pattern and gene expression underlying a shift from gliogenesis towards neurogenesis in human neural progenitors

Central nervous system (CNS) tumors account for almost a third of pediatric cancers and are the largest contributor to cancer-related death in children. Cranial radiation therapy (CRT) is, often in combination with chemotherapy and surgery, effective in the treatment of high-grade childhood brain cancers, but it has been associated with late complications in 50–90% of survivors, such as decline in cognition and mood, decreased social competence, and fatigue. A leading hypothesis to explain the decline in cognition, at least partially, is injury to the neural stem and progenitor cells (NSPCs), which leads to apoptosis and altered fate choice, favoring gliogenesis over neurogenesis. Hence, treatments harnessing neurogenesis are of great relevance in this context. Lithium, a well-known mood stabilizer, has neuroprotective and antitumor effects and has been found to reverse irradiation-induced damage in rodents, at least in part by regulating the expression of the glutamate decarboxylase 2 gene (Gad2) via promoter demethylation in rat NSPCs. Additionally, lithium was shown to rescue irradiation-induced cognitive defects in mice. Here, we show that irradiation (IR) alone or in combination with lithium chloride (LiCl) caused major changes in gene expression and global DNA methylation in iPSC-derived human NSPCs (hNSPCs) compared to untreated cells, as well as LiCl-only-treated cells. The pattern of DNA methylation changes after IR-treatment alone was stochastic and observed across many different gene groups, whereas differences in DNA methylation after LiCl-treatment of irradiated cells were more directed to specific promoters of genes, including genes associated with neurogenesis, for example GAD2. Interestingly, IR and IR + LiCl treatment affected the promoter methylation and expression of several genes encoding factors involved in BMP signaling, including the BMP antagonist gremlin1. We propose that lithium in addition to promoting neuronal differentiation, also represses glial differentiation in hNSPCs with DNA methylation regulation being a key mechanism of action.

The effect of responsive neurostimulation (RNS) on neuropsychiatric and psychosocial outcomes in drug-resistant epilepsy

ObjectiveThe impact of responsive neurostimulation (RNS) on neuropsychiatric and psychosocial outcomes has not been extensively evaluated outside of the original clinical trials and post-approval studies. The goal of this study was to ascertain the potential real-world effects of RNS on cognitive, psychiatric, and quality of life (QOL) outcomes in relation to seizure outcomes by examining 50 patients undergoing RNS implantation for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). MethodsWe performed a retrospective review of all patients treated at our institution with RNS for DRE with at least 12 months of follow-up. In addition to baseline demographic and disease-related characteristics, we collected cognitive (Full-Scale Intelligence Quotient, Verbal Comprehension, and Perceptual Reasoning Index), psychiatric (Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventory Scores), and QOL (QOLIE-31) outcomes at 6 and 12 months after RNS implantation and correlated them with seizure outcomes. ResultsFifty patients (median age 39.5 years, 64% female) were treated with RNS for DRE in our institution from 2005 to 2020. Of the 37 of them who had well-documented pre and post-implantation seizure diaries, the 6-month median seizure frequency reduction was 88%, the response rate (50% or greater seizure frequency reduction) was 78%, and 32% of patients were free of disabling seizures in this timeframe. There was no statistically significant difference at a group level in any of the evaluated cognitive, psychiatric, and QOL outcomes at 6 and 12 months post-implantation compared to the pre-implantation baseline, irrespective of seizure outcomes, although a subset of patients experienced a decline in mood or cognitive variables. SignificanceResponsive neurostimulation does not appear to have a statistically significant negative or positive impact on neuropsychiatric and psychosocial status at the group level. We observed significant variability in outcome, with a minority of patients experiencing worse behavioral outcomes, which seemed related to RNS implantation. Careful outcome monitoring is required to identify the subset of patients experiencing a poor response and to make appropriate adjustments in care.

A highly replicable decline in mood during rest and simple tasks.

Does our mood change as time passes? This question is central to behavioural and affective science, yet it remains largely unexamined. To investigate, we intermixed subjective momentary mood ratings into repetitive psychology paradigms. Here we demonstrate that task and rest periods lowered participants' mood, an effect we call 'Mood Drift Over Time'. This finding was replicated in 19 cohorts totalling 28,482 adult and adolescent participants. The drift was relatively large (-13.8% after 7.3 min of rest, Cohen's d = 0.574) and was consistent across cohorts. Behaviour was also impacted: participants were less likely to gamble in a task that followed a rest period. Importantly, the drift slope was inversely related to reward sensitivity. We show that accounting for time using a linear term significantly improves the fit of a computational model of mood. Our work provides conceptual and methodological reasons for researchers to account for time's effects when studying mood and behaviour.

GDF11 reverses mood and memory declines in aging.

Aging is known to be associated with a decline in memory and mood, but the molecular mechanisms that underlie these changes remain unclear. Moigneu, Abdellaoui and colleagues show that growth differentiation factor 11 reverses deficits in these functions in aged mice, pointing the way towards a novel pro-mnemonic and antidepressant therapeutic target.

The effects of a 6-week controlled, hypocaloric ketogenic diet, with and without exogenous ketone salts, on cognitive performance and mood states in overweight and obese adults

BackgroundKetogenic diets are a commonly used weight loss method, but little is known how variations in sodium content and ketones influence cognition and mood during the early keto-adaptation period.ObjectivesTo investigate the effects of an exogenous ketone salt (KS) as part of a hypocaloric KD on mood and cognitive outcomes in overweight and obese adults. A secondary objective was to evaluate changes in biochemical markers associated with inflammatory and cognitive responses.Materials and methodsAdults who were overweight or obese participated in a 6-week controlled-feeding intervention comparing hypocaloric diets (∼75% of energy expenditure). KD groups received twice daily ketone salt (KD + KS; n = 12) or a flavor-matched placebo, free of minerals (KD + PL; n = 13). A separate group of age and BMI matched adults were later assigned to an isoenergetic low-fat diet (LFD; n = 12) as comparison to KD. Mood was assessed by shortened Profile of Mood States and Visual Analog Mood Scale surveys. Cognitive function was determined by the Automated Neuropsychological Assessment Metrics mental test battery.ResultsBoth KD groups achieved nutritional ketosis. Fasting serum glucose decreased in both KD groups, whereas glucose was unaffected in the LFD. Insulin decreased at week 2 and remained lower in all groups. At week 2, depression scores in the KD + PL group were higher compared to KD + KS. Performance in the math processing and go/no-go cognitive tests were lower for KD + PL and LFD participants, respectively, compared to KD + KS. Serum leptin levels decreased for all groups throughout the study but were higher for KD + KS group at week 6. Serum TNF-α steadily increased for LFD participants, reaching significance at week 6.ConclusionDuring a short-term hypocaloric diet, no indication of a consistent decline in mood or cognitive function were seen in participants following either KD, despite KD + PL being relatively low in sodium. WK2 scores of “anger” and “depression” were higher in the LFD and KD + PL groups, suggesting that KS may attenuate negative mood parameters during the early intervention stages.

Modulation of Mind Wandering Using Monaural Beat Stimulation in Subjects With High Trait-Level Mind Wandering.

Mind wandering (MW) refers to a state when attention shifts from the task at hand or current situation toward thoughts, feelings, and imaginations. This state is often accompanied by a decline in mood, and patients suffering from major depression exhibit more perseverative MW. Hence, although the directionality of the relationship between mood and MW is still under investigation, it may be useful to explore possible avenues to reduce MW. In an earlier pilot study, we investigated MW during auditory beat stimulation in healthy subjects using thought-probes during a sustained attention to response task (SART). We found evidence for reduced MW during monaural 5 Hz beats compared to silence, sine tones, and binaural 5 Hz beats. Moreover, the data tentatively suggested that this reduction was particularly pronounced in subjects with high levels of MW during silence. In the current study, we therefore asked whether MW can be reduced by monaural theta beats in subjects with high trait-levels of MW, as indicated by an online MW questionnaire. Preselected subjects performed a SART task with thought-probes assessing the propensity to mind wander, meta-awareness, and the temporal orientation of MW. Stimulation conditions comprised monaural theta beats, as well as silence (headphones on), and sine tones as control conditions. Our main hypothesis stating that the propensity to mind wander during monaural theta beats is reduced compared to both control conditions was only partly confirmed. Indeed, MW was significantly diminished during exposure to the theta beats compared to sine tones. However, reduced MW during theta beats versus silence was only observed in a subgroup using stricter inclusion criteria. Considering possible reasons for this outcome, our data suggest that the preselection procedure was suboptimal and that beat effects are modulated by the individual responses to auditory stimulation in general.

Effects of social restrictions on people with dementia and carers during the pre-vaccine phase of the COVID-19 pandemic: Experiences of IDEAL cohort participants.

This qualitative study was designed to understand the impact of social distancing measures on people with dementia and carers living in the community in England and Wales during a period of social restrictions before the COVID‐19 vaccination roll‐out. We conducted 12 semi‐structured interviews with people with dementia aged 50–88 years, living alone or with a partner, and 10 carers aged 61–78 years, all living with the person with dementia. Three of the interviews were with dyads. Participants were recruited during November and December 2020. We used framework analysis to identify themes and elicit suggestions for potential solutions. We identified three interrelated themes. People with dementia experienced a fear of decline in capabilities or mood and attempted to mitigate this. Carers noticed changes in the person with dementia and increased caring responsibilities, and for some, a change in the relationship. Subsequently, reduced confidence in capabilities to navigate a new and hostile environment created a cyclical dilemma of re‐engaging where an inability to access usual activities made things worse. People with dementia and carers experienced neglect and being alone in their struggle, alongside feeling socially excluded during the pandemic, and there was little optimism associated with the upcoming vaccine programme. People found their own solutions to reduce the effects of isolation by keeping busy and being socially active, and practising skills deemed to help reduce the progression of dementia. This and some limited local public initiatives for the general public facilitated feelings of social inclusion. This study adds understanding to existing evidence about the longer‐term experience of social isolation several months into the pandemic. It highlights the importance of health and community groups and suggests how services can find ways to support, include, and interact with people with dementia and carers during and after social restrictions.

Impact of Nitisinone on the Cerebrospinal Fluid Metabolome of a Murine Model of Alkaptonuria.

Background: Nitisinone-induced hypertyrosinaemia is well documented in Alkaptonuria (AKU), and there is uncertainty over whether it may contribute to a decline in cognitive function and/or mood by altering neurotransmitter metabolism. The aim of this work was to evaluate the impact of nitisinone on the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) metabolome in a murine model of AKU, with a view to providing additional insight into metabolic changes that occur following treatment with nitisinone. Methods: 17 CSF samples were collected from BALB/c Hgd−/− mice (n = 8, treated with nitisinone—4 mg/L and n = 9, no treatment). Samples were diluted 1:1 with deionised water and analysed using a 1290 Infinity II liquid chromatography system coupled to a 6550 quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (Agilent, Cheadle, UK). Raw data were processed using a targeted feature extraction algorithm and an established in-house accurate mass retention time database. Matched entities (±10 ppm theoretical accurate mass and ±0.3 min retention time window) were filtered based on their frequency and variability. Experimental groups were compared using a moderated t-test with Benjamini–Hochberg false-discovery rate adjustment. Results: L-Tyrosine, N-acetyl-L-tyrosine, γ-glutamyl-L-tyrosine, p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, and 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)lactic acid were shown to increase in abundance (log2 fold change 2.6–6.9, 3/5 were significant p < 0.05) in the mice that received nitisinone. Several other metabolites of interest were matched, but no significant differences were observed, including the aromatic amino acids phenylalanine and tryptophan, and monoamine metabolites adrenaline, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol, and octopamine. Conclusions: Evaluation of the CSF metabolome of a murine model of AKU revealed a significant increase in the abundance of a limited number of metabolites following treatment with nitisinone. Further work is required to understand the significance of these findings and the mechanisms by which the altered metabolite abundances occur.

Elementary School Students’ Subjective Well-Being Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Longitudinal Study

First empirical results indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic has a negative impact on adolescents’ and adults’ subjective well-being. In the present study we focus on the subjective well-being of elementary school children before and after the first pandemic-related school lockdown and examine if possible declines in subjective well-being are especially pronounced for some groups, considering socio-economic status, migration background, and gender as moderators. We tested N = 425 elementary school students (mean age: M = 8.19; SD = 1.04) longitudinally with four measurement points (three before the school lockdown and one after) regarding their general life satisfaction, mood, and domain satisfaction regarding peers, family, and school. Piecewise growth curve models revealed a significant decline in positive mood and in satisfaction with the family. Decline in life satisfaction and satisfaction with peers nearly missed significance. The investigated moderators had no impact on the changes in subjective well-being. We conclude that the pandemic had detrimental effects on young children’s subjective well-being.

Estradiol-dependent gene expression profile in the amygdala of young ovariectomized spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Estrogen plays a role in cardiovascular functions, emotional health, and energy homeostasis via estrogen receptors expressed in the brain. The comorbid relationship between rising blood pressure, a decline in mood and motivation, and body weight gain after menopause, when estrogen levels drop, suggests that the same brain area(s) contributes to protection from all of these postmenopausal disorders. The amygdala, a major limbic system nuclear complex known to express high estrogen receptor levels, is involved in the regulation of such physiological and psychological responses. We hypothesized that elevated estrogen levels contribute to premenopausal characteristics by activating specific genes and pathways in the amygdala. We examined the effect of 1 mo of estradiol treatment on the gene expression profile in the amygdala of ovariectomized young adult female spontaneously hypertensive rats. Estradiol substitution significantly decreased blood pressure, prevented body weight gain, and enhanced the voluntary physical activity of ovariectomized rats. In the amygdala of ovariectomized rats, estradiol treatment downregulated the expression of genes associated with estrogen signaling, cholinergic synapse, dopaminergic synapse, and long-term depression pathways. These findings indicate that the transcriptomic characteristics of the amygdala may be involved in estrogen-dependent regulation of blood pressure, physical activity motivation, and body weight control in young adult female spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Energy and Fatigue Predict Gait Speed and Mood Decline: Results From the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study

Older adults may report high energy alongside tiredness or vice versa; little is known about whether discordant self-reported energy (SEL) and tiredness predict trajectories of mood, cognition, or gait speed. SEL (0-10 scale dichotomized at median) and tiredness (present/absent) were obtained in 2,613 older adults (aged 74.6± 2.87 years) and used to create four groups (energized/not tired, low energy/tired, energized/tired, low energy/not tired). Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and gait speed were measured over 10 years; mixed effect models compared trajectories in these domains across each group with low energy/tired group as referent. Each group was significantly associated with CES-D and gait. Adjusting for demographics, the high SEL/not tired group showed the least decline in mood (ß = -0.17, p<0.01); the high SEL/tired group showed the least decline in rapid gait (ß = 0.008, p = 0.02). High SEL may indicate resilience for mood and gait speed decline.

Effect of Aerobic Exercise Training on Mood and Cognition in Adults at Risk for Alzheimer’s Disease

AbstractBackgroundAerobic exercise is positively associated with mood and cognition, but its effect on protection against decline in mood and cognition in late‐middle aged adults at risk for Alzheimers disease (AD) is unknown.Method23 late‐middle aged adults from a cohort enriched with family history of AD and the APOE4 allele were randomized into Usual or Enhanced Physical Activity (PA) groups. Enhanced PA completed a progressive 26‐week supervised aerobic exercise program at 70‐80% heart rate reserve for 50 minutes, 3 times per week to achieve or exceed public health guidelines. Usual PA only received materials regarding active lifestyle. The Profile of Mood States (POMS) assessed total mood disturbance (TMD), characterized by fatigue, depression, tension, confusion, anger, and vigor. The California Verbal Learning Test II (CVLT‐II) measured verbal learning and memory via the total, short, and long delayed recall, and learning slope. The Delis‐Kaplan Executive Function System (DKEFS) assessed executive function via the trail‐making, color‐word interference (CWI), verbal fluency, and tower subtests. Graded treadmill exercise testing assessed cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), and triaxial accelerometry measured moderate‐to‐vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Independent samples t‐tests between groups and Pearson’s correlations were conducted on baseline to post‐intervention change scores.ResultFatigue decreased significantly in Enhanced PA compared to Usual PA (‐1.18 ± 4.05 vs 2.92 ± 2.68, p= .009), and the decreases in TMD (‐7.64 ± 17.78 vs 6.00 ± 16.42, p=.07) and tension (‐2.00 ± 4.41 vs 0.67 ± 2.39, p= .08) among Enhanced PA were nearly significant. Changes in other mood subcategories and in cognition were not different between groups (all p’s&gt; .15), except improved executive function on the DKEFS CWI as previously published (Gaitán et al. 2019). Correlations of mood with verbal learning and memory or executive function were not significant (all r’s &lt; .17, all p’s&gt; .44). Correlations of mood or cognition with CRF or MVPA were not significant (p’s&gt; .175), except between DKEFS CWI and CRF as previously published (Gaitán et al. 2019).ConclusionAerobic exercise training may protect against fatigue in adults at risk for AD. However, change in mood was not associated with cognitive changes in this cohort.

Association of physical frailty with cognitive function and mood in older adults without dementia and depression

Physical frailty is thought to be related with a decline in cognitive function, mood, and social activities, especially in patients with depression and dementia. It is not clear whether or not physical frailty is associated with an impairment in cognitive function and mood in patients without dementia and depression. In this study, we evaluated the association of physical frailty with cognitive function and mood in geriatric patients without dementia and depression. In this study, 612 patients aged 65 years and over were evaluated. Physical frailty was assessed by using Fried criteria. Furthermore, comprehensive geriatric assessment was performed to each patient. Median age of the patients was 72 years (min-max: 65–93), 58% were female, and 6.5% were frail. Clock drawing (p < 0.001), MMSE (p < 0.001), and Yesevage geriatric depression scale (p: 0.010) test results were worse in frail patients compared to pre-frail and robust ones. Age (p: 0.009), being university graduate (p: 0.031), three words recall test (p: 0.014), activities of daily living (ADL) (p: 0.006), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) (p < 0.001), and MNA-SF (p: 0.001) scores were determined to be independent related factors of frailty. We have demonstrated that cognitive function and mood might be associated with physical frailty in patients without dementia and depression.

Differential effects of COVID-19 lockdowns on well-being: interaction between age, gender and chronotype.

The unprecedented restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic altered our daily habits and severely affected our well-being and physiology. The effect of these changes is yet to be fully understood. Here, we analysed highly detailed data on 169 participants for two to six months, before and during the second COVID-19 lockdown in Israel. We extracted 12 well-being indicators from sensory data of smartwatches and from self-reported questionnaires, filled daily using a designated mobile application. We found that, in general, lockdowns resulted in significant changes in mood, sleep duration, sport duration, social encounters, resting heart rate and number of steps. Examining subpopulations, we found that younger participants (aged 20–40 years) suffered from a greater decline in mood and number of steps than older participants (aged 60–80 years). Likewise, women suffered from a higher increase in stress and reduction in social encounters than men. Younger early chronotypes did not increase their sleep duration and exhibited the highest drop in mood. Our findings underscore that while lockdowns severely impacted our well-being and physiology in general, greater damage has been identified in certain subpopulations. Accordingly, special attention should be given to younger people, who are usually not in the focus of social support, and to women.

Managing Obesity in Lockdown: Survey of Health Behaviors and Telemedicine.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, billions of people have gone into lockdown, facing pandemic related challenges that engender weight gain, especially in the obese. We report the results of an online survey, conducted during Israel’s first quarantine, of 279 adults treated in hospital-based obesity clinics with counseling, medications, surgery, endoscopic procedures, or any combination of these for weight loss. In this study, we assessed the association between changes in dietary and lifestyle habits and body weight, and the benefits of receiving weight management care remotely through telemedicine during lockdown. Compared to patients not receiving obesity care via telemedicine, patients receiving this care were more likely to lose weight (OR, 2.79; p = 0.042) and also to increase participation in exercise (OR, 2.4; p = 0.022). While 40% of respondents reported consuming more sweet or salty processed snacks and 33% reported less vegetables and fruits, 65% reported more homemade foods. At the same time, 40% of respondents reported a reduction in exercise and 52% reported a decline in mood. Alterations in these eating patterns, as well as in exercise habits and mood, were significantly associated with weight changes. This study highlights that lockdown affects health behaviors associated with weight change, and advocates for the use of telemedicine to provide ongoing obesity care during future quarantines in order to promote weight loss and prevent weight gain.
