The Recognition of Rheumatoid Arthritis in the Eighteenth Century. The Contribution of Linné and Boissier de la Croix de Sauvages

Linné and Boissier de la Croix de Sauvages, two botanists and physicians of the mideighteenth century, proposed systems for the classification of diseases. Their medical works have been examined for passages suggestive of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). References to gouty arthritis dominated in Linné's works. Sauvages described chronic joint diseases with affection of small and large joints which might have been RA. William Musgrave described similar cases in 1703. In a single passage in Linné's works such cases are also described. The conclusion is that RA probably has existed throughout the eighteenth century, and that its supposed emergence around the year 1800 is not well-founded.

Vanguard Family Planning Acceptors in Senegal

This study examines contraceptive use among clients at the three clinics providing family planning services in Dakar, Senegal in early 1983. Most clients first became interested in family planning following the birth of a child, and most are interested in spacing future pregnancies, although one-third state that they want no more children. The clinic itself was found to be an important determinant of the type of contraceptive used, with only the government-operated clinic providing a balance between IUDs, oral contraceptives, and barrier methods. Nearly half of the clients interviewed said that a lack of knowledge about contraception is the reason for the low contraceptive prevalence rates among Senegalese women; another frequently cited reason was the opposition of the husband. Most clients reported the broadcast media to be the best means of providing family planning information to potential acceptors.

A New Analytical Index of the International Review of the Red Cross 1962–1974

Ever since 1869, by a decision of the Second International Conference of the Red Cross, the ICRC has issued a periodical, known originally as the Bulletin international des Sociétés de secours aux militaires blessés (International Bulletin of Societies for Relief to Wounded and Sick Soldiers), appearing only in French, and, since 1886, as the Bulletin international des Sociétés de la Croix Rouge, In 1919, it became a monthly publication under the name Revue internationale de la Croix-Rouge. The English edition, International Review of the Red Cross, has been published since 1961. Five special indexes have appeared, in 1900, 1910, 1919, 1939 and 1962. We are glad to announce the publication of the sixth index, covering the years 1962 to 1974. The index for the English edition is now being prepared.

On the Interaction between the Quantity and Quality of Children

Students of human fertility have been aware for a long time that there may be some special relation between the number (quantity) of children ever born to a family and the "quality" of their children as perceived by others if not by the parents. One need only cite the negative correlation between quantity and quality of children per family so often observed in both cross-section and time-series data. One of us (Becker 1960) more than a decade ago stressed the importance for understanding fertility (quantity) of the interaction between quantity and quality, and we are pleased to note that this interaction is emphasized in most of the papers in this Supplement, especially those by De Tray and Willis. Some economists have argued that the negative relation between quantity and quality often observed is a consequence of a low substitution elasticity in a family's utility function between parents' consumption or level of living and that of their children (see, e.g., Duesenberry 1960; Willis 1969). The approach followed by De Tray in this volume is different, but it makes equally special assumptions about the substitution between quantity and quality in the utility function and in household production.

The singularity of Cezanne's early paintings depends ultimately not on any aesthetic or technical innovation, but on their power and authenticity as images.1 Throughout the 1860's, when other advanced artists in Paris were transforming Realism into an increasingly lyrical means of rendering fugitive natural phenomena of season and weather and the purely pleasurable aspects of modern urban life, he transposed directly onto the canvas his blackest moods and most violent impulses.2 In this determination to make of painting an instrument of vehement self-expression, he was undoubtedly inspired by Romanticism with its new ideals of freedom and intensity, above all by Delacroix, who remained his idol long after his own art had become more classical in temper.3 But if his early works recall Delacroix's in their themes of violence or passion, occasionally also in their exotic settings, they proceed, as Schapiro explains, from fundamentally different sources: no longer illustrations of dramatic episodes in classic...
