Case study of nutritional supplement for livestock, result of the pecan nut process in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico

The south-central region of the State of Chihuahua is characterized by being a walnut producing area, in Cd. Delicias. There are ten companies of international stature dedicated to processing pecan nuts. Analyzing the feasibility of using the scrap that these companies discard when breaking the nut and converting it into a useful product such as concentrated livestock feed, which can be marketed, in addition to the nutritional contributions it has. This city is identified as being an important dairy basin, which is why cattle need molasses, mineral salts and some other types of nutrients, which is why this work was developed dedicated to the study of the scrap content that results at the end of the process of cracking the pecan nut in the processing companies, being an area of interest, in which the innovation of using very small parts of the walnut kernel, mixed with other waste produced by this agroindustrial process, taking advantage of this value chain, is analyzed the probability of manufacturing a feed supplement for livestock, converting what they consider waste into a marketable product. To prepare the nutritional table, different statistical studies were developed, which supported the theory and unconditional advice of the Center for Research in Food and Development A.C. Cd. Delicias, Chihuahua, attached to CONAHCYT.

Spatio-Temporal Modeling of Land and Pasture Vulnerability in Dairy Basins in Northeastern Brazil

The objective of this study is to evaluate the spatio-temporal dynamics of land vulnerability and pasture areas in the dairy basins of the states of Pernambuco and Alagoas, which are part of the Ipanema River Watershed (IRW) in the Northeast Region of Brazil. Maps of the Land Use and Land Cover (LULC); the Index of Vulnerability to Degradation (IVD); the Land Vulnerability Index (LVI); time series of Effective Herd (EH), Milked Cows (MC), and Milk Production (MP); and Pasture Cover (PC) and Quality (PCQ) were created as parameters. An opposite pattern was observed between the land use classes of Livestock, Agriculture, and Forest. The IRW area has predominantly flat terrain with a very high risk of degradation. The analysis of MC was consistent with the information from the EH analysis as well as with MP. When assessing Pasture Quality, Severe Degradation areas increased from 2010 to 2014, decreased after 2015, and rose again in 2020. Moderate Degradation areas remained high, while Not Degraded pasture areas were consistently the lowest from 2012 to 2020. Over the 10 years analyzed (2010–2020), the area showed a strong degradation process, with the loss of approximately 16% of the native vegetation of the Caatinga Biome and an increase in pasture areas and land vulnerability.

Low-performance diagnosis of covered anaerobic lagoons as a waste management strategy in the intensive dairy industry

ABSTRACT Covered anaerobic lagoons (CALs) are Latin America's main livestock waste treatment systems. Mexico has 680 CALs that present low biogas yields (0.05 m3 m−3 digester d−1) and low COD removal rates (< 60%). This work focused on diagnosing CAL´s low performance in dairy farms by determining and analyzing operational parameters. Seven CALs located in the main dairy basin of Mexico were analyzed. The sampling areas for each CAL were the supernatant, the active zone, settled sludge, and digester inlet and outlet. The variation of the process parameter values corroborated that CALs appeared stratified and not working as expected. The sludge zone, comprising 50–58% of total solids content and 1–15% of total CALs volume, showed an elemental compounds content suitable for organic fertilizer (340, 48, and 5 kg t−1 of C, N, and S, respectively). However, this zone contained, at least, 85% of the slowly hydrolysable material; the methanogenic potential was less than 87 mL CH4 g VS−1, and the C/N ratio ranged from 4.9 to 17, outside of the optimal range. The biogas produced did not exceed 60% of methane content and more than 3000 ppm of H2S. The sludge zone significantly influences the lagoon's dynamics since it is a nutrient sink. Furthermore, the lack of agitation is the leading cause for the low energy yield and the low removal of organic matter rate. This work provides valuable information to address the operational problems within the CALs improving our understanding that shall allow proposing reactivation alternatives.

Assessing technical efficiency and its determinants for dairy cattle farms in northern Algeria: The two-step DEA-Tobit approach

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the technical efficiency of dairy cattle farms in Tizi Ouzou region as one of the main dairy basins in Algeria. To do so, a two-step analysis was applied. First, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was used to quantify the technical efficiency of dairy cattle farms. In the second step, a Tobit model to examine factors affecting farms’ technical efficiency is used. The analysis used cross-sectional data collected from 146 dairy cattle farmers. The study found that the average technical efficiency under VRS assumption is relatively high, suggesting that farms can reduce their inputs by an average of 17% while maintaining the same level of output. The study also highlights the crucial role that agricultural advisory system and traditional insemination play in enhancing technical efficiency. In this region, where cattle breeding is traditionally practiced on a small scale, increasing herd size can result in reduced performance. The study also recommended that agricultural policies should be adapted to local specificities and that a more supportive strategy should be adopted for small-scale family dairy farms instead of promoting the large farm model.

Efficacy of neem oil, &lt;i&gt;Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Vernomia colorata&lt;/i&gt; extracts on ticks and multi-resistant bacteria isolated from milk in the dairy value chain in Northern Côte d’Ivoire

Livestock diseases are a major constraint to farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. However, an inadequate use of acaracides and antibiotics for animal diseases control leads to multi-resistance. Research on medicinal plants can be an alternative. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of three plant extracts on cattle ticks and multi-resistant bacteria isolated in milk from the Korhogo dairy basin. A cross- sectional survey was conducted from March to August 2023 in 24 farms in northern Côte d’Ivoire. Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and Amblyomma variegatum female adult ticks were sampled. A questionnaire was administrated to farmers on their knowledge and practices on diseases control. Three plant extracts (Azadirachta indica, Vernomia colorata and Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides) were screened for bio-acaricide and anti-bacterial activities using adult immersion test and disc-diffusion assay respectively. At 5000 parts per million (ppm), neem oil and hydroalcoholic extract of the stem bark of Z. zanthoxyloides were effective on A. variegatum while only neem oil at 5000 ppm was active on R. (B) microplus. The three plant extracts at 5000 ppm showed no antibacterial activity on multiresistant isolates of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Neem oil can be used for plant-based bioacaricide development to control the resistant cattle tick R. (B) microplus in Côte d’Ivoire.

Evaluation of the efficiency of biological and economic indicators in production systems on dairy farms

The efficiency of the livestock system is one of the factors of greatest social and economic interest in rural production areas. The project aimed to assess various biological and economic indicators to identify the most efficient dairy cows in grazing systems with supplementation within the Antioquia-Colombia dairy basin. We used retrospective data from 2009 to 2019 from farms in the municipalities of Entrerríos, San Pedro, and Belmira. The production systems in the northern region of Antioquia share common features typical of many dairy enterprises. They are primarily characterized by their utilization of grazing systems, each employing distinct supplementation regimes.The farms have their own records and official milk control from the cooperatives or associations from which the data was obtained. The productive categories of the evaluated cows were established according to the number of births, and within each subgroup, they were ordered by the total liters per lactation in ascending order. Productive, reproductive, health, and economic variables were recorded. Then cuts were made, thus forming three categories: low, medium, and high production. It was possible to determine the model that showed four groups of variables (breed, milk production per lactation, open days, and silage) with an important correlation of 97% and a greater contribution to the behavior of the cost per liter, obtaining an R2 of 0.91 (P &lt;0.05) and a prediction error of US$ 0.0076 per liter of milk in the evaluated farms. It is concluded that, with few biological and economic predictive indicators, it was possible to identify the most efficient cows in grazing systems.

Lead, Cadmium, and Arsenic in Raw Cow's Milk in a Central Andean Area and Risks for the Peruvian Populations.

Milk and its derivatives are basic foods in Peru, especially for children. The Junín region, in the central Andes, is one of the leading dairy basins. However, the safety of milk is affected by mining-metallurgical activities, wastewater dumping, organic residues, and inappropriate use of organophosphate fertilizers in agriculture whose contaminants reach the food chain, putting human health at risk. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bioaccumulation of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As) in milk produced on a representative farm in central Peru, which uses phosphorous agrochemicals and is adjacent to a small mineral concentrator and a municipal solid waste dump, and to evaluate the potential risk for the Peruvian population of 2-85 years considering three levels of daily intake by age, which constitutes the innovative contribution of the study. These three elements were quantified by flame atomic absorption spectrometry following standardized procedures. The mean contents of Pb (0.062 mg/kg), Cd (0.014 mg/kg), and As (0.030 mg/kg) in milk exceeded the maximum limits allowed by international standards. At all ages, the target quotient hazard followed a descending order of As > Pb > Cd, being > 1 in the case of As. The hazard index was >1 for children under 7, 9, and 11 years of age in the scenarios of low, medium, and high milk intake. The information is valid for formulating policies to prevent adverse health effects and develop standards and awareness programs, monitoring, and control of heavy metals in milk in Peru.

Characterization of water status and vegetation cover change in a watershed in Northeastern Brazil

The existing water scarcity in the Brazilian semiarid region, associated with anthropic activities, imply in the degradation of the watersheds present in the Caatinga. Therefore, the objective of this study was to characterize water and vegetation cover changes in the Ipanema River Watershed (IRW). IRW is inserted in municipalities that make up the dairy basins of the states of Alagoas and Pernambuco, one of the main economic activities in the Northeast of Brazil (NEB). Land use and land cover (LULC) maps, Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) and rainfall product via TerraClimate were used in the study. The MNDWI was based on the annual mean between 2010 and 2020 for the dry and rainy periods. For rainfall patterns and variability, pixel values were extracted and submitted to the Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) interpolation method. We highlight the inverse relationship between the categories Forestry, Agriculture and Cattle Raising, with a decrease in the area of Caatinga due to agriculture and cattle raising. In the dry period via MNDWI there was higher water availability in 2010, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, the exceptions were the years 2013–2016. In the rainy season, clouds interfered in the MNDWI analyses, with lower water availability in 2013, the exceptions were 2017 and 2018. Comparatively, the images from 2010 to 2020 via MNDWI, showed a water reduction in the IRW, mainly in the southern portion. For the dry period, the years 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2019 showed less than 138 mm of rainfall, especially in 2016 (<64 mm). In the rainy season, the years 2012, 2013, 2016, 2018 and 2019 also showed less than 482 mm of rainfall, with 2012 and 2016 standing out (<101 mm), mainly, the months with the highest rainfall record at IRW. The results obtained in this study show that droughts in the NEB continue to the present day, followed by an increase in water deficit. Anthropic action implies environmental degradation in one of the most threatened ecosystems (Caatinga), affecting mainly the water resource, an important factor in the survival of the local population and in the territorial dynamics.

Impact of dairy farms on groundwater quality in a productive basin in the northeast of the Pampean Plain, Argentina

The Pampean Plain is a relevant world food production area where livestock and agricultural activities are developed. The northeast of this region is characterized by dairy production, where large quantities of excreta from the animals to the substrate cause environmental impacts associated with soil and groundwater contamination. On these dairy farms, the same water sources are used for animal nutrition, cleaning of facilities, and home consumption by rural workers. Groundwater quality assessment is therefore crucial to guaranteeing safe production and human supply. The aim of this work is to analyse the impact of family dairy farming on the geochemical processes that govern the groundwater quality of aquifers used for domestic and animal consumption in productive basins of the northeast Pampean Plain. An analysis of major ions, nitrates, and phosphates in groundwater was performed in 42 wells sampled at different periods. Also, sediments in diverse sectors were collected to be analysed for available phosphorus. The main point sources of contamination that were identified derive from farm facilities’ cleaning and the degradation of animal excrement. These sources infiltrate toward the unsaturated zone and reach the groundwater, or they directly enter through poorly constructed perforations. This produces reactions in the unsaturated zone, releasing protons and generating the dissolution of carbonates, increasing the groundwater hardness. The chemical compounds registered may produce limitations in water quality for human consumption and the development of agricultural activities, affecting animal nutrition and the production of a dairy basin in the northeast of the Pampean Plain.

ANALYSIS OF THE FREQUENCY OF SINGLE NUCLEOTIDE POLYMORPHISMS IN THE INNATE IMMUNE RESPONSE GENES NRAMP1 AND BMAP-28 RELATED TO RESISTANCE OR SUSCEPTIBILITY TO BOVINE MASTITIS

Infectious bovine mastitis is an infection of mammary gland responsible great losses to dairy farming, resulting in negative impacts on the quantity and quality of milk produced. Genetic factors may be related to resistance or intensification of the inflammatory condition. Among them, the bovine myeloid antimicrobial peptide 28 gene (Bmap-28) and the natural resistance associated macrophage protein 1 gene (Nramp1) stand out because they can be used as genetic markers in dairy cattle breeding programs. The aim of this study was to analyze the immunogenetic profile in herds from the dairy basin of the state of Pernambuco in Northeastern Brazil, using these markers previously established in the literature. For this, the partial sequencing of the genes Bmap-28 and Nramp1 was performed. The study covered 54 animals, regardless of sex or age. For Bmap-28, two genotypes were found, GG (76%) and GC (24%). Both profiles are considered susceptible to intramammary infection. On the other hand, Nramp1 immunogenotyping revealed three distinct profiles, GG (11%), GC (48%) and CC (41%), of which only the GG genotype configures resistance to mastitis. The immunogenetic scenario detected suggests that the local herd is prone to intramammary infection, which is corroborated by the high prevalence (65.2%) of mastitis in the Agreste region of Pernambuco State.

Agricultural Extension and Advisory System in Algeria Analysis and Recommended Reforms

In Algeria, dairy cattle breeders are faced with weak support from technical institutions and state extension services, diffi cult access to fi nancing and a milk sector that does not contribute to reducing the level of risk. Breeders fi nd it very diffi cult to predict the future and to project themselves into the future. They have little room for maneuver due to a lack of agricultural land, labor force and fi nancing. This paper aims to analyze the current agricultural extension and advisory system in Algeria, advocating its reform with a new technical advisor. We postulate the hypothesis that development agents are poorly equipped to deal with the diff erent types of production systems and the establishment of eff ective technical support. They still do not conform to the expectations of breeders. To answer our hypothesis, we took the example of the milk sector in Algeria. We focused on the technical advisor and his relationship with farmers in two potential dairy basins. The latter is a civil servant at the level of state services, chosen in view of the preponderance of his role in extension and agricultural advice for the benefi t of stockbreeders. It appears that the advice is a component of a system involving various stakeholders, with a renunciation of the actors. Implementing the advisory requires signifi cant adjustments to the current agricultural extension and advisory system. The conclusions drawn from this study and the proposals made are valid for all of Algeria.

Caractérisation des exploitations agriculture-élevage et origine de l’innovation dans les principaux bassins laitiers de l’Algérie.

The study focuses on dairy cattle farming systems and the sources of innovation for breeders in the Setif and Souk-Ahras dairy basins recognized by cereals, dairy cattle breeding and irrigated crops. A sample of 140 family farms was selected and surveyed between 2017 and 2018. A typology of livestock systems was constructed using of a PCA and AHC. The results show three groups. G1 retains 68% of breeders with small farms, combining polyculture with dairy cattle breeding; G2, 30% of breeders, the farm is medium-sized and the productive orientation is mixed farming and dairy cattle breeding; G3, made up of large grain farmers and mixed cattle breeders (milk/meat). The cattle breeds exploited are Red Holstein and Montbeliard, 74% dominant. The origin of innovation relating to breeding practices comes mainly from local socio_x0002_technical networks, whereas formal extension by public services is ineffective (0.64 %). It appears that group1 occupies the first position in terms of acquiring information on innovations, followed by G2 and 3. Socio-technical networks operate from 27 to 33% in the 3 groups. The veterinarian contributes 25% in G1 and 2; at 41% in G3.

Productive Characterization of Dairy Farms in the Central-Westerm Province of Chaco - Argentina

It is possible to produce efficiently in areas that are considered inadequate, as long as all the technologies are not transferred from the temperate zones in which the most important dairy basins of the country are located. The objective of the work was to identify and productively characterize the dairy farms in the center-west of the province of Chaco - Argentina. 11 dairy farms were identified and visits were made between September 2021 and April 2022 located in the center-west of the province of Chaco. The results show that the median and age ranges of the owners surveyed was 47 (36-67) years old, the area used for milk production was 50 (20-275) hectares, of which 78% is natural forest and 22% are dedicated to the production of cultivated pastures. The median and ranges of the milking cows were 9 (2-20) cows and 12 (3-15) dry cows, total milk production per day: in warm months 30 (14-300) liters and in cold months 30 (6-300) liters, the duration of lactation 200 (150-270) days. Dairy farms in the center-west of the Chaco province were identified and characterized, showing that there is dairy production in the region and that this forces the need to generate attention policies for them.

Lead and Cadmium Bioaccumulation in Fresh Cow's Milk in an Intermediate Area of the Central Andes of Peru and Risk to Human Health.

The dairy basin of the Mantaro River located in the centre of Peru faces serious anthropogenic disturbances as it receives emissions and discharges from the metallurgical mining activity located in the headwaters of the basin and milk contaminated with lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) endangers the environmental and human health, especially children. To measure the concentrations of Pb and Cd in milk and the dangers of their consumption in the Peruvian population, 40 milk samples were collected and quantified by atomic absorption spectrometry. The mean concentration of Pb in milk was 15 ± 2.6 µg/kg, which represented 75% of the Maximum Limit (ML), and that of Cd was 505 ± 123 µg/kg, which exceeded the ML by more than 194 times. The estimated weekly intake of Pb for people aged 2–85 years was below the Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) references, determining risk coefficients (CRD) < 1. Weekly Cd intake was much higher than the PTWIs and CRDs were between 14 and 34, indicating that consumers would experience carcinogenic health effects, with children being at higher risk than adults, therefore, milk from the area is not safe for consumption. Cd would be transferred mainly through the soil (water)-grass-milk pathway, due to its presence in irrigation water and in fertilizers that contain Cd. The main pathway for Pb entry would be air-soil (water)-milk grass, from the fine particles emitted into the air by the mining-metallurgical activity, developed approximately 90 km from the study area.

Agricultural Advice and Decision-Making in the Management of Farms in the Main Dairy Basins of Algeria

The study focuses on the involvement of extension services and agricultural advice in decision support for breeders, the Setif and Souk-Ahras dairy basins recognized by cereals, dairy cattle breeding and irrigated crops. A sample of 140 family farms was selected and surveyed between 2017 and 2018. The χ2 test assessed the supply of advice and sources of information useful in the management farm. The use of the Kruskal-Wallis test demonstrated the level of infl uence of the agricultural council on the decision-making of breeders by sector of activity in relation to the choice of fodder crops, fertilization and treatment of fodder crops, increase in milk production, hygiene and disease control, sale of products and seeds, improvement of farm profi tability, bookkeeping, information on subsidy programs and irrigation. Analysis of the Post Hoc ranking of our sample reveals 6 groups of breeders in terms of decision support.

Spatiotemporal characterization of land cover and degradation in the agreste region of Pernambuco, Brazil, using cloud geoprocessing on Google Earth Engine

The characterization of land use and land cover (LULC), as well as the identification of its degradation factors, are necessary for the preservation of the agroecosystem and help in decision making. Therefore, the objective of this research was to evaluate the spatial-temporal dynamics of vegetation cover and soil degradation in the Agreste mesoregion of the state of Pernambuco, through the leaf area index (LAI), soil-adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), and pasture vegetation cover index (PVC) from Sentinel-2/MSI images from the Multispectral Instrument (MSI) sensor and, develop software for automatic cloud processing on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. Were used 8 Sentinel-2/MSI satellite images (2017–2020), processed in GEE, to obtain the SAVI, LAI, and PVC. A pluviometric survey was carried out for the month before the registration of each image, from the Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station data (CHIRPS). The images were subjected to descriptive statistics and principal component analysis (PCA). The months that comprise the highest rainfall exceeded the accumulated 100 mm. The SAVI values ranged from −0.2 to 0.80, of the LAI between 0 and 3 m2 m−2 (with small regions greater than 3). Regions of the low spectral response of LAI and SAVI, correlated with areas of low rainfall in the study region. The total variance showed 100% representativeness and significance of the data for the accumulated in PC2, this denotes how significant the correlations between SAVI, LAI, and PVC are. Because of the new climatic and environmental scenarios, this study presented a relevant contribution to characterizing the potential areas in soil degradation processes, mainly in the Caatinga biome. Between the years 2017–2020, there was the occurrence of soil degradation processes in the Agreste region of Pernambuco, where the state's dairy basin is located, caused by poor management, use of arable land, and long periods of drought.

Low Price of Fresh Milk and its Implications in Peruvian Family Farming

The dairy activity in Peru is being affected by the low prices in the purchase of fresh milk, discouraging the producers of family agriculture, which has forced them to take a position of social struggle and sell head of cattle to continue sustaining the family economy. This situation directly affects the main producing areas, located within the dairy basin of the departments of Cajamarca, Arequipa, and Lima, which represents 51.7% of the national production of fresh milk that is collected by three large dairy companies and formal and informal artisanal processors. The different purchase and sale channels have generated vulnerability in the price that small and medium producers receive today for fresh milk, which in the last ten years has been lower than international prices. Moreover, the industry is under a tax regulatory framework that has given it market advantages, generating disparity in terms of the benefits of Peruvian dairy producers in addition to the structural limitations that do not allow improving their performance. Therefore, it is expected and recommended that the Peruvian government fulfill a regulatory and articulating role within the system, generating policies, plans, workshops, among others, in order to improve the articulation and performance of the system for the benefit of families that call for state intervention to improve their living conditions and economic stability.

Innovative process of a food supplement made from oregano bagasse. “NUTRIOREG”

The South-Central Region of Chihuahua is a highly agricultural and livestock area. It has 41,900 hectares of non-timber forest resource (oregano) (Alarcón, 2005), which is processed and generates waste up to 1,470.17 tons per season cycle, which do not take advantage of its economic and nutritional benefit. The niche of opportunity was born here where it was found that the oregano residue contains 16.44% of protein per 100 g according to studies at the Center for Research in Food and Development of Delicias (CIAD), attached to CONACYT, and in the laboratory of the company Alimentos Concentrados de Delicias. The proportion that is generated from this waste is very rich, it is considered as an area of commercialization opportunity. In this region there are 257 potential clients according to SAGARPA (2017) dedicated to raising cattle. As quoted by Almeida G, (DIGAL 2018) specified that 8363 livestock production units participate directly in the dairy activity with a daily volume of 3,000,000 liters of milk. Of the five dairy basins in the state, Delicias is the most important, therefore, there is the opportunity to establish the NUTRIOREG company as a producer of concentrated feed supplement for livestock.

Frequency of Neospora caninum-specific antibodies in bulk milk from dairy farms from Mar y Sierras Dairy Basin, Argentina.

The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of Neospora caninum based on the detection of specific antibodies in bulk tank milk (BTM) from dairy cattle farms in the Mar y Sierras Basin by using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A total of 98 BTM samples from 49 dairy farms were collected during autumn and spring of 2019. Additionally, 147 paired individual milk and serum samples were collected from two dairy farms to assess the prevalence within-herd by ELISA and indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT, serum samples). Additionally, 12 individual serum samples were also assessed to test the agreement between IFAT and ELISA (total serum samples 159). Noteworthy, 100 and 91.84% of 49 dairy farms were positive in the BTM in autumn and spring, respectively. For the within-herd individual samples, a good agreement between serum and milk results was obtained for ELISA and IFAT (0.86-0.90). This is the first study in Argentina in which milk samples were tested to determine the N. caninum infection status at herd and within-herd levels in dairy farms, providing a base for further research.

Prevalence and risk behaviours of camel brucellosis transmission in the peri-urban dairy basin of Niamey, Niger

Considered as one of the most widespread zoonoses in the world and dangerous for human and animal health, brucellosis has been studied mainly in cattle and small ruminants but rarely in camels. The lack of data in Niger on this pathology in camels has aroused particular interest given the breeding method and the dietary habits of urban and peri-urban consumers. It is in this context that we conducted the first cross-sectional study on camel brucellosis in Niger, in the peri-urban dairy basin of Niamey. The general objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of camel brucellosis and the risk behaviours for its transmission at the animal-human interface. Thus, 275 serum samples and 75 camel milk samples were collected from 20 farms in 11 peri-urban localities of Niamey. The serum samples were analysed by 2 methods, namely the Rose Bengal test and indirect ELISA. The overall seroprevalence obtained with the serum samples was 4%. All 75 milk samples tested by indirect ELISA were negative. In addition, 30 camel farmers were surveyed to assess their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding brucellosis. The survey revealed that 96.7% of the farmers were not aware of brucellosis, the species affected and the modes of transmission. Most of participants stated that camels were in frequent contact with sheep, goats, cattle, and other species. In case of abortion, the placenta and runt are handled with bare hands and sometimes buried or thrown away. All respondents consumed raw camel milk and stated that the milk sold is not pasteurised. These elements constitute risk behaviours for the transmission of this zoonosis and urgent measures should be taken. However, epidemiological investigations must be carried out continuously in order to monitor the evolution of this major zoonosis and to establish an adapted prophylaxis that takes into account this species, in order to protect the herd but also public health.&#x0D; Keywords: Camel brucellosis, seroprevalence, lacto-prevalence, KAP study, Niamey-Niger.
