Crystal Structure of Cyanuric Triazide

IN connexion with the discussion on dipole moments held by the Faraday Society at Oxford in April 1934, Sir William Bragg described1 briefly the results of a research, which I had been making on the structure of cyanuric triazide. A Fourier analysis of the measured X-ray intensities of (hkio) planes showed the three nitrogen atoms of the azide group to be in a straight line2. Details of the research were promised later and were held up for an absolute intensity determination to be made. The calculations are now completed and will, I hope, be published soon.

The Crystal Structure of Cyanuric Triazide

Hexagonal cyanuric triazide has been examined by means of Laue, rotation and oscillation photographs and by a few spectrometer measurements. The dimensions are a = 8.70A and c = 5.98A. The space group is H63/m. There are two C3N3(N3)3 in the cell. The ten parameters have been determined by a qualitative Fourier analysis and the dimensions and angles of the molecule are given.

Structure of the Azide Group

IN the account in Nature of May 26, p. 802, of the recent discussion on dipole moments held at Oxford by the Faraday Society, reference is made to the probable linearity of the arrangement of the nitrogen atoms in the azide group. An X-ray examination of cyanuric triazide made by Miss Knaggs in the Davy Faraday Laboratory shows that this hypothesis is correct. I gave a short account of her work in a lecture at the Royal Institution at the end of last year. The arrangement bears a curious resemblance to the arms of the Isle of Man, a row of three nitrogen atoms lying in the position of each leg from knee to ankle.
