Beyond Solitary Reliance on the Namibian Police Force in Preserving Internal Security

ABSTRACT This study underscores that while the Namibian Constitution designates the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) as the authority responsible for preserving internal security, it acknowledges that addressing the multifaceted factors that impede the realisation of internal security requires other stakeholders' involvement. The analysis of participants' views and a thorough review of the current security landscape have shed light on the complexities and challenges faced by NamPol in its sole responsibility for maintaining internal security. Employing an exploratory qualitative approach, I conducted non-probability purposeful sampling, engaging in face-to-face and semi-structured interviews with a diverse pool of 20 participants, including police, military, correctional officers, municipal police, and personnel from legal assistance and NamRights. Thematic analysis was the chosen methodology, guided by a fundamental query: should the responsibility of preserving internal security be entrusted to the police alone or should countries consider moving beyond solitary reliance on the police?. The prevailing conditions emphasise the need for a collaborative approach to address these multifaceted challenges effectively. This is based on the limitations of the police force in addressing the root causes of insecurity, including poverty, social issues, and porous borders. While the police play a crucial role, it is evident that their capabilities are insufficient to comprehensively address these complex issues. The findings suggest that NamPol's constitutional mandate, as stipulated in Article 118 of Namibian Constitution Third Amendment Act, 2014 (Act No. 8 of 2014), should be amended to incorporate the involvement of other stakeholders in the preservation of internal security.

The research uses outlier analysis, min-entropy, and quantum state fidelity to distinguish between normal and abnormal data patterns. The dispersed randomness of network header data is measured using entropy, which aids in identifying security concerns. The suggested QML-based methodology outperforms conventional approaches and current models, including AMM-CNN and ANN models, with a detection accuracy of 99.87% for DDoS attacks. This advancement leads to more effective and secure communication networks.

A Network Defense System for Detecting and Preventing Hacking

Many computing systems have recently suffered significantly from hacking and preventing hacking is important in protecting business, sensitive information and every day network communications. Many efforts have been made to provide security assurance by proposing security solutions. However, the gap between hacking incidents and current security solutions is significant. Fortunately, hacking attempts can be addressed if the pre-hacking step, called scanning, is properly investigated and good counter measures are in place. The importance of scanning appears is in providing sophisticated hackers with the necessary information about nominated victims systems which eventually forms their hacking strategies. Therefore, this article proposes a security solution that aims to make scanning difficult by addressing its properties, which makes developing hacking strategies against protected computer networks unpractical. The proposed security solution protects computer networks by dynamically generating a unique protocol to replace the expected standard protocols and changing network paths periodically in order to confuse scanning attempts, as well as to prevent unauthorized scanning and hacking traffic. Enhancing User Experience in Private Bank Mobile Banking: Insights from Management Information System Analysis

This research explores the impact of Management Information Systems (MIS) on user experience in private bank mobile banking, focusing specifically on the effectiveness of m-BCA. Utilizing a descriptive quantitative approach, the study aims to understand how mobile banking features, including accessibility, user interface, security, and functionality, influence user satisfaction. Data were collected through direct experimentation with the m-BCA application, complemented by analysis from secondary data sources and a survey of 30 users. Results indicate that 93.3% of users find m-BCA effective for routine banking needs, attributing high ratings to its convenience and functionality. However, while 80% of respondents appreciate the current security measures, 20% cite the absence of advanced security features such as fingerprint and facial recognition as a drawback. The study also reveals mixed feedback on the user interface; while the straightforward design aids usability, 10% of users express a desire for a more visually appealing interface. Despite these areas for improvement, m-BCA’s comprehensive set of features is generally seen as effective, supporting users in performing essential transactions with ease and reliability. The findings suggest that enhancing interface aesthetics and integrating advanced security options could further boost user engagement and trust in mobile banking applications, underscoring MIS’s role in meeting evolving customer expectations in digital banking.

INTELLIGENCE GATHERING AND ITS CONTRIBUTION TO NIGERIA'S NATIONAL SECURITY: A CRITICAL ASSESSMENT

The Nigerian intelligence sector faces institutional limitations that hinder the successful implementation of intelligence collecting, which is widely acknowledged as a crucial tool in tackling these issues. This paper provides a thorough evaluation of the function of intelligence gathering within Nigeria's national security framework, analysing its effectiveness in dealing with current security challenges. This study seeks to offer a thorough examination of the intelligence cycle in the Nigerian setting, including the gathering, analysis, and use of intelligence in national security strategy. The research used a mixed-methods methodology, combining quantitative data obtained from a questionnaire with qualitative insights obtained from an empirical literature analysis. The Network Theory (TNT) functions as the conceptual framework, providing a perspective to examine the intricate connections and transmission of information within the intelligence network. Statistical analysis is conducted on the questionnaire results using descriptive and inferential methods, while the findings of the literature review are consolidated to offer context and depth. The study results highlight a significant dependence on Human Intelligence (HUMINT) and source intelligence (OSINT) in Nigeria, with a lack of implementation of Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) and a disregard for Measurement and Signature Intelligence (MASINT). Furthermore, the investigation exposes inadequate levels of trust and collaboration between intelligence agencies and other security organizations. The major obstacles mentioned are insufficient financial resources, insufficient training and knowledge, technical constraints, competition among different agencies, and legal and bureaucratic restrictions. The research findings indicate that although intelligence gathering is of utmost importance for Nigeria's national security, its efficacy is hindered by structural and operational obstacles. personnel growth and comprehensive strategy to improve intelligence capabilities, which involves bolstering inter- agency collaboration, allocating resources to technical progress and skilled personnel growth, and creating a strong legal and ethical structure.

Pitfalls in Machine Learning for Computer Security

With the growing processing power of computing systems and the increasing availability of massive datasets, machine learning algorithms have led to major breakthroughs in many different areas. This development has influenced computer security, spawning a series of work on learning-based security systems, such as for malware detection, vulnerability discovery, and binary code analysis. Despite great potential, machine learning in security is prone to subtle pitfalls that undermine its performance and render learning-based systems potentially unsuitable for security tasks and practical deployment. In this paper, we look at this problem with critical eyes. First, we identify common pitfalls in the design, implementation, and evaluation of learning-based security systems. We conduct a study of 30 papers from top-tier security conferences within the past 10 years, confirming that these pitfalls are widespread in the current security literature. In an empirical analysis, we further demonstrate how individual pitfalls can lead to unrealistic performance and interpretations, obstructing the understanding of the security problem at hand. As a remedy, we propose actionable recommendations to support researchers in avoiding or mitigating the pitfalls where possible. Furthermore, we identify open problems when applying machine learning in security and provide directions for further research.

End User Security using Smart Devices with Ability to Access IoT services

This paper explores the security issues of smart devices in IoT environments and proposes solutions to enhance end-user protection. A qualitative approach, including a comprehensive literature review, was used to identify key security issues and best practices. Key vulnerabilities in IoT device security include insecure communication channels, weak authentication mechanisms, outdated firmware and software, and a lack of standardized security protocols. Current security practices among end-users show limited awareness and inconsistent implementation. Recommendations include adopting universal security standards, enhancing user education through regular programs, promoting advanced security tools like multi-factor authentication, and simplifying device management with user-friendly interfaces. This paper offers a comprehensive analysis of IoT security issues and practical recommendations to create a safer IoT ecosystem, ensuring technological advancements do not compromise user security.

ENHANCING THE RESILIENCE OF IOT NETWORKS: STRATEGIES AND MEASURES FOR MITIGATING DDOS ATTACKS

The Internet of Things (IoTs) are emerging and become a vital need in our daily routine. The privacy protection and insecurity of these IoT-based devices face many challenges. Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks in IoT networks become a significant growing challenge that is addressed in this research. The resilience and strategy for IoT devices due to distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks assess current security measures by proposing modern procedures to upgrade the strength of IoT frameworks. This article proposes a mechanism that mitigiates the effects of DDoS attacks in IoTs, that cause significant destruction to existing systems. Utilizing secondary data from Kaggle, the machine is trained and tested. Our proposed approach incorporates descriptive statistics, correlations, t-tests, chi-square tests, and regression analyses to supply a systematic understanding of IoT security by critically analyzing the existing variants of numerous DDoS attacks, Security issues in IoTs, and creation of them in Botnets or zombies. Our findings show that the proposed security techniques are viable and detection rates correlate with security viability. The proposed model asses various network threat and cybersecurity arrangements for mitigating DDoS attacks in IoT’s and outperforms the previously implemented Web Application Firewall (WAF), Bot Mitigation, Resource Prioritisation, and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs)based DDoS mitigation techniques by 80.5%, 88%, 86% in terms of effectiveness, T-test, chi test, and correlation.

Role of Grants in Ensuring Socio-Economic Stability in the Conditions of War in Ukraine

Grant programs are a key tool for solving global human problems. They promote business development, especially businesses founded by women or veterans. In times of crisis, grants become indispensable support for overcoming difficulties. In Ukraine, grants stimulate the development of various spheres of society, supporting reforms, civil society, science, culture and economy, especially in the context of geopolitical and economic challenges. The purpose of the article is to analyze and systematize available grant programs for the population and business in wartime conditions, to determine effective ways to find and receive them. The authors consider grants as free financial assistance provided for the implementation of projects, education or business development. Grants have a number of advantages compared to other financial instruments, such as loans, attracting investors or crowdfunding. In particular, grants do not need to be returned, and they can be raised systematically, which expands the financial capabilities of organizations. The article also discusses the goals of granting grants in wartime, which may include supporting innovation, solving current security problems, developing certain sectors of the economy, and transferring experience and financial resources from more developed countries. In the article, the author analyzes the experience of programs such as "Horizon Europe" and "EU4Business", emphasizing their role in supporting Ukrainian enterprises and the economy. The conclusions of the article indicate that grants are an important source of funding that allows implementing ideas, conducting scientific research, supporting charitable organizations, and improving the quality of life. The article offers an overview of the different types of grants, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as recommendations for finding and receiving grant support, including public and private grant programs.

Network challenges are addressed, particularly the integration of IoT, edge, and fog computing for improved security and efficiency. Emerging trends such as zero trust architecture, AI-driven security, quantum-safe encryption, and blockchain solutions are highlighted as pivotal developments. The paper underscores the need for proactive, adaptive security strategies to protect sensitive data amid evolving threats and regulatory complexities in cloud security.

Proactive strategies to mitigate emerging cybersecurity risks in IoT devices for smart homes

This work proposes strategies to mitigate emerging risks in smart Internet of Things (IoT) devices within homes. With the significant increase in these devices, cybersecurity became a primary concern. Therefore, this study focused on identifying potential risks and vulnerabilities, using surveys to assess current security practices and knowledge about protective measures among other aspects related to cybersecurity. Based on these results, recommendations were made for users, to strengthen security in their IoT devices and promote good practices to create a safer and more protected home environment against possible cyber threats.

Survey of UAV Security Authentication and Cryptography Protocols

Unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, are gaining significant attention because of the strategic and financial information and value involved in aerial applications, as well as the sensitive data collected through embedded sensors. UAVs are rapidly developing in various fields and find widespread utility in military applications for effective target tracking, battlefield surveillance, radiation monitoring, and sports. UAVs are useful and advantageous, but they can also be attacked by a variety of techniques, including jamming, fuzzing, false data injection, and zero attacks. Researchers were looking on robust security mechanisms to protect UAVs from attackers in order to combat such security risks. However, there is a large number of vulnerabilities in designed protocols that hackers could take advantage of. For the identification and addressing of those vulnerabilities and weaknesses, it is becoming highly important to study and analyze current security protocols that are used in the UAVs. In this study, a thorough survey will be introduced on authentication and cryptography that are used in the UAV protocols, as well as describing architecture, procedure, and security of Micro Aerial Vehicle Link (MavLink) protocol. We will explain as well the cryptography and authentication approach that has been developed by the use of the MavLink protocol. Index Terms— UAV, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, MavLink, Zero attack.

A Gnn-Enhanced Ant Colony Optimization for Security Strategy Orchestration

The expansion of Internet of Things (IoT) technology and the rapid increase in data in smart grid business scenarios have led to a need for more dynamic and adaptive security strategies. Traditional static security measures struggle to meet the evolving low-voltage security requirements of state grid systems under this new IoT-driven environment. By incorporating symmetry in metaheuristic algorithms, we can further improve performance and robustness. Symmetrical properties have the potential to lead to more efficient and balanced solutions, improving the overall stability of the grid. We propose a gnn-enhanced ant colony optimization method for orchestrating grid security strategies, which trains across combinatorial optimization problems (COPs) that are representative scenarios in the state grid business scenarios, to learn specific mappings from instances to their heuristic measures. The learned heuristic metrics are embedded into the ant colony optimization (ACO) to generate the optimal security policy adapted to the current security situation. Compared to the ACO and adaptive elite ACO, our method reduces the average time consumption of finding a path within a limited time in the capacitated vehicle routing problem by 67.09% and 66.98%, respectively. Additionally, ablation experiments verify the effectiveness and necessity of the individual functional modules.

Vulnerabilities and Security Patches Detection in OSS: A Survey

Over the past decade, Open Source Software (OSS) has experienced rapid growth and widespread adoption, attributed to its openness and editability. However, this expansion has also brought significant security challenges, particularly introducing and propagating software vulnerabilities. Despite the use of machine learning and formal methods to tackle these issues, there remains a notable gap in comprehensive surveys that summarize and analyze both vulnerability detection (VD) and security patch detection (SPD) in OSS. This article seeks to bridge this gap through an extensive survey that evaluates 127 technical studies published between 2014 and 2023, structured around the Vulnerability-Patch life cycle. We begin by delineating the six critical events that constitute the Vulnerability-Patch life cycle, leading to an in-depth exploration of the Vulnerability-Patch Ecosystem. We then systematically review the databases commonly used in VD and SPD, and analyze their characteristics. Subsequently, we examine existing VD methods, focusing on traditional and deep learning-based approaches. Additionally, we organize current security patch identification methods by kernel type and discuss techniques for detecting the presence of security patches. Based on our comprehensive review, we identify open research questions and propose future research directions that merit further exploration.

Obstacles and countermeasures for protecting Internet of Things devices from emerging security risks

In response to these identified challenges, the paper proposes a set of innovative and pragmatic countermeasures aimed at mitigating emerging threats to IoT security. Emphasising the importance of a holistic security framework, the suggested countermeasures span technological enhancements, policy interventions and user education initiatives. The goal is to establish a resilient security posture that not only addresses current vulnerabilities but also adapts to the evolving threat landscape, thereby fostering a more secure and trustworthy IoT ecosystem. Through this research, we aim to contribute valuable insights to the ongoing discourse on IoT security, fostering a deeper understanding of the intricate dynamics at play and providing actionable recommendations for stakeholders invested in fortifying the security foundations of our increasingly interconnected world.
