There are three levels of professional communications competence: the Novice level; the Craftsman level and the Expert level. Current methods of instruction in professional communications are directed almost exclusively to the development of Novice- and Craftsman-level competencies. Adoption of the case study method, as a supplement to lecture and workshop methods, offers the best promise for developing Expert-level competence in communications education. The case study method is uniquely suited to encouraging individual expertise and self-confidence.
