J-integral Estimation by Reference Plastic Slope Method

It is difficult to obtain J-integral values (J-values) without performing numerical analyses for materials of which stress-strain relation is given by a poly-linear curve. The current author has proposed the reference plastic slope (RPS) method, which can estimate J-values for arbitrary stress-strain curves. The RPS method derives the J-values for bi-linear stress-strain curves whose plastic slope is determined using the reference stress and original stress-strain curve. This study aimed at showing applicability of the RPS method to straight pipes with a circumferential surface crack subjected to a tensile or bending load. Four poly-linear stress-strain curves were assumed for validation. It was shown that well-approximated J-values were obtained by assuming bi-linear stress-strain curves. Second, it was demonstrated that the J-values for bi-linear stress-strain curves could be estimated by the equations proposed in author’s previous study.

Groups containing locally maximal product-free sets of size 4

Every locally maximal product-free set S in a finite group G satisfies G=S∪SS∪S−1S∪SS−1∪S−−√, where SS={xy∣x,y∈S}, S−1S={x−1y∣x,y∈S}, SS−1={xy−1∣x,y∈S} and S−−√={x∈G∣x2∈S}. To better understand locally maximal product-free sets, Bertram asked whether every locally maximal product-free set S in a finite abelian group satisfy |S−−√|≤2|S|. This question was recently answered in the negation by the current author. Here, we improve some results on the structures and sizes of finite groups in terms of their locally maximal product-free sets. A consequence of our results is the classification of abelian groups that contain locally maximal product-free sets of size 4, continuing the work of Street, Whitehead, Giudici and Hart on the classification of groups containing locally maximal product-free sets of small sizes. We also obtain partial results on arbitrary groups containing locally maximal product-free sets of size 4, and conclude with a conjecture on the size 4 problem as well as an open problem on the general case.

CONSTITUTIONALIZING ROLE OF TERMS OF SERVICE OF SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS AND PROPOSED SOCIAL MEDIA USER BILLS OF RIGHTS

Multiple challenges and risks to democratic values and fundamental human rights emerge from the constitutulization processes of social media platforms. This article submits that more consideration has to be put on how private governance of social media platforms should be transparent, consensual, relatively stable in its application and how it should be enforced fairly. The values presented by the rule of law as well as traditional democratic principles of a sovereign state should inform the debate around contested relationship between the users and social media platforms. Digital constitutionalism is a concept that explains waves of constitutional counteractions as a result of a fast pace development of digital technologies. Digital constitutionalism is regarded as the idea that considers the constitutionalism of the digital society. This article focuses on examining constitutional tone of existing terms of service of a world leading social media platform Facebook and reviews potential value that digital Bills of Rights, intiated by various non-governmental organizations and individuals, may hold in shaping human rights’ compliant governance framework for social media platforms in the years to come. From the terms of service and bills of rights, it is based to show that Facebook is ready to show a peculiar configuration. At present, social media bills of rights and terms of service play the constitutionalizing roles. Nevertheless, it is not the aim of the current author to exhaust the topic, but rather to provide potential answers to the matters examined.

Oncology Acupuncture: Precision Medicine Meets Patient-Centered Care.

The Precision Medicine Initiative of 2015, together with a growing focus on patient-centered care, has challenged the U.S. health care system to provide the correct treatment to the correct individual patient rather than to a collective population. This demonstrates that acupuncture-with its history as an individualized therapy and with growing evidence-based clinical findings-is the ideal model for personalized medicine within oncology care. The current author and colleagues used previously conducted oncology acupuncture trials for pain, hot flashes, and insomnia to demonstrate that precise delivery of acupuncture might depend on a patient's genetics. Individual preferences and perceived evidence surrounding treatments might also factor into patient treatment choices. Further effectiveness evidence comparing acupuncture to drugs or cognitive-behavioral therapy provides insight on the relative benefit or harm of each treatment, which, in turn, can help clinicians and patients to choose the best treatment plans centered on patients' goals. To advance precision oncology acupuncture research, appropriate biomarkers and psychologic attributes should be incorporated into adequately powered and well-designed clinical trials to evaluate how acupuncture can be delivered to the correct patients.

Axon Degeneration and Inflammation in Neuropathy: The Role of Acupuncture.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) induces debilitating long-term side-effects in breast cancer-survivors. This article describes some of the more-recent research in this area including a randomized controlled pilot trial the current author and colleagues performed to assess feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of acupuncture for treating CIPN in this population. In this randomized pilot trial of 40 breast-cancer survivors with CIPN after adjuvant taxane therapy, an 8-week acupuncture intervention (versus usual care) led to a statistically and clinically significant reduction in subjective sensory symptoms, including neuropathic pain and paresthesia. Given the lack of effective therapies and given the established safety profile of acupuncture, clinicians may consider acupuncture as a treatment option for mild-to-moderate CIPN in practice. Additional larger studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Nobel Prize's roots in Russia

The scientist who does not dream of receiving the Nobel Prize is unthinkable. The main reason for this research is that fact that just about 2,5% of Nobel Prize winners are Russians. This paper analyzed archive and literature documents about the activity of Alfred Nobel in Russia. In 1879 three Nobel Brothers (including Alfred) founded the "Nobel Brothers Association", abbreviated as Branobel, in Russia. Success touched Alfred Nobel’s fut in Russian business and part of his profit was secured in Russian Central Bank as we know from Alfred Nobel’s will. As a result of current research author tried to evaluate contribution of A. Nobel’s Russian business in Nobel Foundation and Russian life. Consequently, it was revealed that A. Nobel’s executor Sohlman R. stated that in the assets of the Nobel Prize the originally share of funds received from Branobel activities was about 12%.

Update on Nonfacial Fat Transplantation.

Fat transplantation is becoming increasingly popular for off-face rejuvenation. To provide an update in the literature of current knowledge and emerging concepts in the use of fat transplantation for nonfacial applications. This update includes the potential benefits and risks of using fat transfer techniques on the body. The current literature and author experiences are provided to help understand this growing field of aesthetic procedures. The use of nonfacial fat transplantation is increasing and will become a larger part of aesthetic practices.

Complex elbow injuries

: Operative treatment for complex elbow injuries has evolved. The elbow is prone to stiffness, as such operative stabilization of complex injuries is imperative to allow for early mobilization. The four injuries that will be discussed include Monteggia fracture-dislocation, distal humerus fracture, terrible triad, and transolecranon fracture. A case presentation with surgical technique is presented for each. Surgical management of these injuries is then discussed by combining current literature and author experience.

From Storybooks to Novels: A Retrospective Approach Linking Print Exposure in Childhood to Adolescence.

Despite the far-reaching advantages associated with leisure reading, it is an activity that fewer adolescents are choosing to pursue. The present study used a retrospective correlational approach to investigate shared storybook reading in childhood and current print exposure in 45 parent-adolescent dyads. Parents and adolescents completed a Retrospective Title Recognition Test, identifying storybook titles from a backdated list (books published before 2007) containing both real titles and foils. Adolescents also completed Activity Preference and Reading Enjoyment/Frequency questionnaires to assess reading habits as well as an Author Recognition Test to assess current print exposure. In addition, they were asked to name their favorite childhood storybook and favorite current author to investigate whether these two abilities were linked to print exposure. Vocabulary, reading, and spelling skills were also measured. A hierarchical multiple regression demonstrated that adolescents’ Retrospective Title Recognition Test scores accounted for unique variance in their Author Recognition Test scores, above and beyond literacy skills. Mediational analyses demonstrated that print exposure contributed to word reading and spelling scores. Our findings highlight the impact of parents’ shared storybook reading with children. Here, early reading experiences related to later reading preferences, which in turn, were associated with literacy skills in adolescence.

Clinician's corner: Response to Gormley et al.

Comments on article by Gormley et al. (2020). The current author discusses the original article's relevance to their professional experience as a clinician at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Discussed topics in the article include time and money, which are two of the three most anticipated barriers of programs interested in integration (space being the third). This study demonstrates the importance of sustained measurement over time; however, regularly conducting direct observations is a large use of resources and not feasible for most clinicians. Addressing risk-factors, Voluntary-Insurance in place can ensure secured digital-banking that can enhance growth of usages digital-banking.

Searching for office buildings’ fenestration geometries with a Bi-phase optimization framework

By coupling algorithmic optimization with parametric modeling and performance simulation, the building design process becomes a series of informed decision-making. Algorithmic optimization helps architects find high-performance design choices which balance complicated tradeoffs among various performance objectives. Although algorithmic-optimization aided design is more competent than the traditional manual method, due to complexities in building design, optimization frameworks are not easy to formulate. Focusing on the correlation between energy efficiency, visual comfort, and construction material cost, the current author formulates a bi-phase optimization framework to search for facade fenestration geometries. Afterwards, this optimization framework is applied to one representative office building in China. Optimal design choices are found to have much lower thermal loads and construction cast, but higher visual comfort. This paper highlights how the optimization framework regarding facade fenestration is formulated and how it performs during the building design process.

Trust-based marketing leadership: What senior leaders should be focusing on during brand plan reviews

Virtually every marketing team, in every company and in every industry, goes through the yearly, if not more frequent, ritual of developing and presenting its business/marketing plans to its executive team. This process can involve considerable time and expenditure. In very many cases, executives’ own blind spots of their role in the process can have a host of negative consequences for the quality of the plans themselves and, just as importantly, for the motivation and engagement of the team. When leaders second-guess the work done by expert and dedicated teams or use the ritual as an opportunity to micromanage or grandstand, there can be many consequences, some of which are outlined in this paper. This paper discusses ways to make it right, and offers a number of tips for leaders to consider as they manage and conduct brand strategy and plan reviews. The current author believes that embracing some or all of these tips will result in not only better plans, but also more engaged and motivated teams.

Spectral Analysis of Heart Rate Variability During Trigger-Point Acupuncture of Various Muscles.

Objective: The aim of this research was to clarify changes in cardiovascular autonomic nervous system function due to trigger-point (TP) acupuncture; the current author evaluated differences in responses among acupuncture at TPs of various muscles using spectral analysis of heart rate variability. Materials and Methods: Subjects were 48 healthy men. Before measurements began, subjects were assigned to a TP acupuncture or control group based on presence/absence of referred pain on applying pressure to a taut band within the right extensor digitorum muscle, tibialis anterior muscle, gluteus medius muscle, or masseter muscle. Measurements were conducted in a room with a temperature of 25°C, with subjects in a long sitting position after 10 minutes of rest. Acupuncture needles were retained for 10 minutes at 1 site on the right extensor digitorum muscle, tibialis anterior muscle, gluteus medius muscle, or masseter muscle. Electrocardiography was performed simultaneously with respiratory-cycle measurements. Based on the R-R interval on the electrocardiograms, frequency analysis was performed, low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) components were extracted, and the ratio of LF to HF components (LF/HF) was evaluated. Results: All subjects in the TP acupuncture group showed a transient increase in the HF component, but no significant changes in heart rate (HR) or LF/HF. In the control group, no significant changes were observed in HR, HF component, or LF/HF. Conclusions: These data suggest that acupuncture stimulation of TPs of the right extensor digitorum muscle, tibialis anterior muscle, gluteus medius muscle, and masseter muscle increases parasympathetic nerve activity transiently.

Forming impressions of hotels: the subtle power of words

The aim of the study was to investigate the potential power that subtle wording changes may have in altering the impressions that potential guests gain from brief descriptions, such as on the home pages of hotel websites or in online reviews.
 The intention was to determine whether the findings of earlier psychological research on the formation of impressions of people could be replicated regarding impression formation of hotels. In the psychological experiments, students first read a brief biography about a guest lecturer, then later attended a discussion led by him. They then rated their impressions of the man on a number of dimensions. All of the respondents experienced exactly the same discussion and received exactly the same biography. The words were identical except for one word. In one version a sentence said people who knew this man described him as cold. In the other version he was described as warm.
 The change of this one word alone had significant effects on people’s ratings on some dimensions and very little effect on others. For example, those who received the warm version rated the man as more generous than those who received the cold version.
 The current study was designed to see if this effect would occur when hotel management students formed an impression of a hotel, especially when there was limited information available – such as on the home page of a hotel’s website.
 Data were collected from 60 students from a hotel management college who were familiar with hotels either as guests, students on industry placement, or both. The students were in their early twenties and represented a number of different nationalities.
 Information from the home pages of two New Zealand hotel websites was adapted and edited to form a description of a fictitious hotel. The brief description of the hotel was followed by a survey containing 15 items, each describing a dimension of the hotel. The students gave each item a score of between 1 and 6 (see Table 1).
 Respondents received exactly the same descriptions of the hotel except for the change of one word. In one version a sentence said, “Guests who have stayed at the hotel generally describe it as having a cold ambience.” The same sentence in the other version said, “warm ambience.” Thirty students read the warm version and the other 30 read the cold version.

 Statistical analysis of the group averages revealed seven statistically significant dimensions. Table 1 shows that the ‘warm’ group perceived the hotel as more likely to be more popular, busier and bustling, quieter, tidier and well kept, environmentally friendly, extravagant and with more knowledgeable staff than did the ‘cold’ group.
 Having rated the warm ambience as more likely to be bustling it might be expected that it would be rated noisier. That was not the case. Revisiting some students and further questioning them revealed that a cold ambience was perceived as more likely to have harsh surfaces such as tiles and glass that would echo noise. A warm ambience was perceived to be more likely to be carpeted, curtained and with décor that absorbed sound.
 The findings show that the warm-cold effect could be replicated regarding impression formation of hotels and may suggest that some dimensions are core for forming an impression and others are peripheral. It appears ambience described as warm and cold may be among the core dimensions. The current study was an initial exploration of this phenomenon and further research would be required to identify whether other dimensions are core or peripheral. However, a more recent replication of the study by the current author using “welcoming – unwelcoming” produced five statistically different dimensions and hence may also be a core dimension. Whatever the case, the findings suggest that care needs to be taken when hoteliers choose wording to include in descriptions on the home pages of their websites.

A Conserved Region Common to Chikungunya (ChikV), Dengue (DenV) and Zika Viruses (ZikV): Potential as a Tool for Simultaneous Diagnosis and Therapeutics of the Three Viruses [Short Communication

There is an increasing need to develop strategies for simultaneous detection of Chikungunya (ChikV), Dengue (DenV) and Zika Virus (ZikV) owing to their shared transmission ecology. Towards this aim, nine reference sequences of ChikV, DenV (1 - 4) and ZikV were aligned using ClustalW Omega Software available at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) website. Internet search engines like Google (Scholar), PubMed, JSTOR, and ProQuest Central were used for literature search. Also, Conserved Domain Database (CDD) (NCBI) and ZikaVR (IMTECH, C'garh) formed constant references. One conserved region, 21 amino acids (aa) in length, common to the three viruses mapping to the Core protein of ChikV (aa 211 - 231); and the NS3 proteins of DenV (1 - 4) (aa 1608 – 1628) and ZikV (aa 1631/35 - 1651/55) has been identified by the current author in this study. This region is the part of a protease in all the three viruses studied. Thus, this conserved region can form one diagnostic tool/probe for simultaneous detection of ChikV, DenV and ZikV. Additionally, as this region is conserved, it may form one therapeutic target.
