Effect of increased pCO2 and temperature on the phytoplankton community in the coastal of Yellow Sea

In order to study the dynamics of marine phytoplankton communities in response to anticipated in temperature and CO2, a shipboard continuous culture experiment (Ecostat) was conducted. The experiment involved simulations under current atmospheric CO2 concentrations (400 ppm) and projected year-2100 CO2 levels (1000 ppm), as well as varying temperature under present (22 °C) versus increased temperature (26 °C) in the Yellow Sea during the summer of 2020. The results showed that both the increased pCO2 and temperature had significant effects on microphytoplankton and picophytoplankton, with the warming effect proving to be more significant. The different responses of various species to acidification and warming and their coupling effect led to the changes in microphytoplankton and picophytoplankton community structure. Elevated temperature and greenhouse treatments promoted the growth of dominant diatoms and Synechococcus, such as Guinardia flaccida and Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima. This phenomenons widened the ecological niche, and the changes in the growth patterns of dominant species consequently influenced the content of cellular elements. Mantel's analysis further demonstrated that both warming and greenhouse promoted the growth of diatoms and Synechococcus. Projections of marine phytoplankton community trends by the end of the century based on Growth Rate Ratio (GRR), indicated that not only would species with GRR < 1 decrease, but also numerous species with growth rates >1 at elevated pCO2 levels would be ousted from competition. This experiment demonstrates the need to investigate whether extended exposure to increased pCO2 and temperature over more extended time scales would similarly induce shifts in the biological and biogeochemical dynamics of the Yellow Sea.

Impacts of atmospheric CO2 increase and Amazon deforestation on the regional climate: A water budget modelling study

AbstractGlobal air temperature increase has caused changes in the global climate such as droughts, floods and severe events. Land cover shifts and the increase in greenhouse gas emissions can intensify these impacts. Therefore, the application of Specific Warming Level 2 (SWL2) technique has been considered to evaluate the global warming issue in various climate scales, which may induce different responses in the climate system. The objective of this study is to evaluate the impacts of a doubling of current atmospheric CO2 concentrations as well as the influence of deforestation of the Amazon Forest on the climate of South America. In this study, the CPTEC‐BAM1.2 global model was used to simulate these processes. The first scenario of simulations considered doubled atmospheric CO2 concentration (2XCO2 = 776 ppm) and the second scenario is the total conversion of the Amazon Forest to pasture (DEF). In the third scenario both CO2 and deforestation are considered simultaneously (2XCO2 + DEF). A control simulation considers the natural Amazon Forest shape and a steady CO2 concentration of 388 ppm. Results suggest that the temperature increased in all scenarios, the highest increment in the 2XCO2 + DEF experiment (5.4°C in 2XCO2 + DEF, 5.1°C in DEF and 3.2°C in 2XCO2). The model simulated drastic negative rainfall anomalies in each of three scenarios (2XCO2 + DEF: −2.1 mm day−1, 2XCO2: −1.3 mm day−1 and DEF: −0.9 mm day−1). Besides less precipitation and evapotranspiration, shifts in moisture transport were identified in each of the three scenarios. The effect of doubled atmospheric CO2 produces results similar to deforestation for hydrological water budget changes, and total pasture conversion may intensify such changes.

Intracanopy CO2 and light interactions on Humulus lupulus L. net canopy carbon gain under current and future atmospheric CO2 concentrations

Photosynthetic light response curves were measured in four cultivars of Humulus lupulus L. (hop) at CO2 concentrations of 415, 500, 600, and 700 μmol CO2 mol−1. Short-term elevated CO2 increased net photosynthesis (An), light-saturated rates of photosynthesis, and quantum yield and decreased the light compensation point and leaf respiration. To illustrate the effects on canopy carbon gain, we used a rigorously validated physiologically-explicit canopy process model (MAESTRA). The cultivar-specific leaf-level physiological response parameters at 415, 500, 600, and 700 μmol CO2 mol−1 were extrapolated throughout the canopy to reproduce the cultivar-specific carbon gain under current and future atmospheric CO2 conditions. Under sub optimal light conditions, the initial CO2 increase of 415 to 500 μmol CO2 mol−1 resulted in the highest relative carbon gain increase (∼18%), whereas enrichment from 500 to 600 and 600 to 700 μmol CO2 mol−1 resulted in an additional carbon uptake of ∼16% and ∼12%. Ratios of An to increased CO2 indicated that shaded leaves benefit more from elevated CO2 than light saturated leaves. Estimated daily canopy carbon uptake increased ∼24% from 415 to 500 µmol mol−1 CO2. Daily carbon uptake increased by ∼17% from 500 to 600 µmol mol−1 CO2 and ∼18% from 600 to 700 µmol mol−1. Thus, in comparison to leaves exposed to direct sunlight, hop canopy carbon gain in shaded diffuse light lower canopy layers may contribute a greater proportion of total canopy carbon in future atmospheric CO2 conditions.

Cultivating marine macroalgae in CO2-enriched seawater: A bio-economic approach

By the end of the current century atmospheric CO2 concentration may reach 1000 ppm, more than twice the present level set at ca. 400 ppm. Marine macroalgae (seaweeds) contribute to global primary production and by taking up CO2 they may ameliorate and regulate global climate change. Seaweeds also have direct and indirect economic importance by providing food and bioactive compounds for human benefit. Nonetheless, all these benefits could be jeopardized by the ongoing pressures, both local and global, on marine environments. In this study we examine the effects of dissolved CO2 and seasonal seawater temperature on the growth rates (measured weekly changes in biomass and expressed on a daily basis) of two model species, Ulva rigida (Chlorophyta) and Gracilaria conferta (Rhodophyta), which are common in the intertidal zone of the Israeli Mediterranean Sea, and cultivated by the local seaweed industry. The seaweeds were grown in land-based 40 L fiberglass tanks fertilized with sufficient N and P, supplied with running seawater and continuous air bubbling to keep equal exposure of the seaweeds to nutrients and light. The tanks were also provided with aeration with regular air (ambient CO2, ~ 400 ppm) or CO2-enriched air (~780 ppm). Seaweeds exposed to CO2–enriched seawater grew faster, 32.5 and 8.5% growth per day for U. rigida and G. conferta, respectively. Following calculations of productivity rates, market price, and input cost, we estimate production and show a quadratic production function with respect to temperature for each CO2 concentration. Thus, there is an optimal temperature that maximizes seaweed output. Based on the production function estimates and using market prices, maximal short-run profits were obtained at ca. 22.5 °C and 27.5 °C for U. rigida and G. conferta, respectively. These results may provide useful information for seaweed growers on what and where to grow seasonally, and how farming activities should adapt to external changes in temperature and CO2 concentration.

Flies Avoid Current Atmospheric CO2 Concentrations.

CO2 differs from most other odors by being ubiquitously present in the air animals inhale. CO2 levels of the atmosphere, however, are subject to change. Depending on the landscape, temperature, and time of the year, CO2 levels can change even on shortest time scales. In addition, since the 18th century the CO2 baseline keeps increasing due to the intensive fossil fuel usage. However, we do not know whether this change is significant for animals, and if yes whether and how animals adapt to this change. Most insects possess olfactory receptors to detect the gaseous molecule, and CO2 is one of the key odorants for insects such as the vinegar fly Drosophila melanogaster to find food sources and to warn con-specifics. So far, CO2 and its sensory system have been studied in the context of rotting fruit and other CO2-emitting sources to investigate flies’ response to significantly elevated levels of CO2. However, it has not been addressed whether flies detect and potentially react to atmospheric levels of CO2. By using behavioral experiments, here we show that flies can detect atmospheric CO2 concentrations and, if given the choice, prefer air with sub-atmospheric levels of the molecule. Blocking the synaptic release from CO2 receptor neurons abolishes this choice. Based on electrophysiological recordings, we hypothesize that CO2 receptors, similar to ambient temperature receptors, actively sample environmental CO2 concentrations close to atmospheric levels. Based on recent findings and our data, we hypothesize that Gr-dependent CO2 receptors do not primarily serve as a cue detector to find food sources or avoid danger, instead they function as sensors for preferred environmental conditions.

Enhancing the productivity of ryegrass at elevated CO2 is dependent on tillering and leaf area development rather than leaf-level photosynthesis.

Whilst a range of strategies have been proposed for enhancing crop productivity, many recent studies have focused primarily on enhancing leaf photosynthesis under current atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Given that the atmospheric CO2 concentration is likely to increase significantly in the foreseeable future, an alternative/complementary strategy might be to exploit any variability in the enhancement of growth/yield and photosynthesis at higher CO2 concentrations. To explore this, we investigated the responses of a diverse range of wild and cultivated ryegrass genotypes, with contrasting geographical origins, to ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations and examined what genetically tractable plant trait(s) might be targeted by plant breeders for future yield enhancements. We found substantial ~7-fold intraspecific variations in biomass productivity among the different genotypes at both CO2 levels, which were related primarily to differences in tillering/leaf area, with only small differences due to leaf photosynthesis. Interestingly, the ranking of genotypes in terms of their response to both CO2 concentrations was similar. However, as expected, estimates of whole-plant photosynthesis were strongly correlated with plant productivity. Our results suggest that greater yield gains under elevated CO2 are likely through the exploitation of genetic differences in tillering and leaf area rather than focusing solely on improving leaf photosynthesis.

Species-specific morphological and physiological characteristics and progressive nitrogen limitation under elevated CO2 concentration

Elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) concentration initially enhances photosynthesis, growth and ecosystem productivity, but the excessive use of nitrogen due to the increased productivity causes uncertainty in long-term ecosystem responses. We exposed Korean red pine, Chinese ash, and Korean mountain ash to current atmospheric CO2 concentration (aCO2), 1.4 times higher CO2 concentration (eCO21.4), and 1.8 times higher CO2 concentration (eCO21.8) in an Open-Top Chamber (OTC) experiment for eight years (2010-2017) to investigate the effect on the morphological and physiological properties of trees. We also assessed whether nitrogen limitation occurred with time by comparing leaf and soil nitrogen concentration. CO2 fertilization effect was observed on tree growth for the first two years (p < 0.05), but there was no difference thereafter. For photosynthetic properties, CO2 effects were species-specific; no effects on Korean red pine and Chinese ash vs. significant effect on Korean mountain ash. However, maximum photosynthetic and carboxylation rates significantly decreased by 24.3% and 31.3% from 2013 to 2017, respectively. Leaf nitrogen significantly decreased by 21.0 % at eCO21.4 and 18.5 % at eCO21.8 compared with aCO2 treatment. This study showed the decline of leaf nitrogen and species-specific responses to long-term high CO2 concentration, which will effect on species competition and ecosystem succession.

Warm fjords and vegetated landscapes in early Pliocene East Antarctica

The response of the Antarctic ice sheets to future warming is uncertain. The IPCC are predicting minimal melt from Antarctica while others suggest increased meltwater contributions are possible. The Pliocene period (5.333 Ma to 2.58 Ma) may provide insights into future ice sheet response, because atmospheric CO2 concentrations were similar to today (350-450 ppmv) and the earth surface was between 2°C and 4°C warmer than the preindustrial conditions. Geological records indicate that Antarctica's ice sheets were smaller and more dynamic at this time and many sea-level estimates require meltwater input from the Greenland, West (WAIS) and East Antarctic Ice sheets (EAIS). However, only a few records exist proximal to the Antarctic ice sheet which allow for reconstruction of the Pliocene climate state. We present a multiproxy climate reconstruction from a sedimentary succession that was deposited in an ancient fjord within the Transantarctic Mountains, covering discrete intervals between the early Pliocene and the late Pleistocene. In contrast to modern frigid conditions, our records indicate sea surface temperatures of about 5.6°C at c. 4.1 Ma, the presence of a plant community at the fjord margins and evidence of soil formation. Simulations of potential vegetation cover in the Pliocene indicate our reconstruction is most compatible with a complete collapse of the WAIS and a large scale retreat of the EAIS from the subglacial basins with atmospheric CO2 levels of less than 450 ppmv. Our study indicates that under present day atmospheric CO2 conditions, in the early Pliocene, the Antarctic ice sheets retreated significantly. Understanding the mechanisms driving this large-scale ice sheet retreat would enable us to assess whether current atmospheric CO2 concentrations will lead to the same ice sheet configuration once the Earth system has come to a new equilibrium state.

Changes of the Flowering Time of Trees in Spring by Climate Change in Seoul, South Korea

Flowering onset has attracted much attention in ecological research as an important indicator of climate change. Generally, warmer temperatures advance flowering onset. The effect of climate warming on flowering onset is more pronounced in spring because the difference between atmospheric and water temperatures creates more rapid convection than in other seasons. We analyzed the correlation between 73 species of spring woody plants in Hongneung Arboretum in Seoul, South Korea and the spring minimum temperature and average precipitation over the past 50 years (1968–2018). The spring minimum temperature and average precipitation have increased over the past 50 years, resulting in the advance of the first flowing date (FFD) in all 73 species by 8.5 days on average. A comparison of FFD changes over time by dividing the survey period into three time periods confirmed the advance of the FFD in 50 species (68% of investigated species) by 11.1 days on average in both Period 2 (1999–2008) and Period 3 (2009–2018) relative to Period 1 (1968–1975). Additionally, a delay of the FFD by 3.2 days on average was observed in 8 species. The FFD of Lonicera chrysantha (Caprifoliaceae) advanced by over 40 days and was highly correlated with the increased spring minimum temperature. Analysis of the sensitivity of plant responses to climate change revealed that a temperature rise of 1°C was associated with an FFD advance of 1.2 days in all species. The species that was most sensitive to temperature change was Spiraea pubescens for. leiocarpa (Rosaceae), whose FFD advanced by 4.7 days per 1°C temperature rise. Each increase in precipitation by 1 mm was found to result in a 0.1-day advance of the FFD of all species. Prunus tomentosa (Rosaceae) was the most sensitive species, that advanced by 2.6 days for each 1 mm increase in precipitation. Thus, for all species, the FFD was more sensitive to the change in temperature than in precipitation. Assuming that the current greenhouse gas (GHGs) emission levels or atmospheric CO2 concentration is maintained, Seoul’s spring minimum temperature is projected to rise by 2.7°C over the next 50 years. Accordingly, considering only the global temperature change, the mean FFD of the study’s 73 species is projected to advance by an additional 3.4 days.

No evidence for triose phosphate limitation of light-saturated leaf photosynthesis under current atmospheric CO2 concentration.

The triose phosphate utilization (TPU) rate has been identified as one of the processes that can limit terrestrial plant photosynthesis. However, we lack a robust quantitative assessment of TPU limitation of photosynthesis at the global scale. As a result, TPU, and its potential limitation of photosynthesis, is poorly represented in terrestrial biosphere models (TBMs). In this study, we utilized a global data set of photosynthetic CO2 response curves representing 141 species from tropical rainforests to Arctic tundra. We quantified TPU by fitting the standard biochemical model of C3 photosynthesis to measured photosynthetic CO2 response curves and characterized its instantaneous temperature response. Our results demonstrate that TPU does not limit leaf photosynthesis at the current ambient atmospheric CO2 concentration. Furthermore, our results showed that the light-saturated photosynthetic rates of plants growing in cold environments are not more often limited by TPU than those of plants growing in warmer environments. In addition, our study showed that the instantaneous temperature response of TPU is distinct from temperature response of the maximum rate of Rubisco carboxylation. The new formulations of the temperature response of TPU derived in this study may prove useful in quantifying the biochemical limits to terrestrial plant photosynthesis and improve the representation of plant photosynthesis in TBMs.

Transcriptome responses to elevated CO2 level and Wolbachia‐infection stress in Hylyphantes graminicola (Araneae: Linyphiidae)

Hylyphantes graminicola is a resident spider species found in maize and cotton fields and is an important biological control agent of various pests. Previous studies have demonstrated that stress from elevated CO2 and Wolbachia infection can strongly affect spider species. Thus, based on CO2 levels (400 ppm, current atmospheric CO2 concentration and 800 ppm, high CO2 concentration) and Wolbachia status (Wolbachia-infected, W+ and Wolbachia-uninfected, W- ), we divided H. graminicola individuals into four treatment groups: W- 400 ppm, W- 800 ppm, W+ 400 ppm, and W+ 800 ppm. To investigate the effects of elevated CO2 levels (W- 400 vs W- 800), Wolbachia infection (W- 400 vs W+ 400), and the interactions between these two factors (W- 400 vs W+ 800), high-throughput transcriptome sequencing was employed to characterize the de novo transcriptome of the spiders and identify stress-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs). De novo assembly of complementary DNA sequences generated 86688 unigenes, 23938 of which were annotated in public databases. A total of 84, 21, and 157 DEGs were found among W- 400 vs W- 800, W- 400 vs W+ 400, and W- 400 vs W+ 800, respectively. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that metabolic processes, signaling, and catalytic activity were significantly affected by elevated CO2 levels and Wolbachia infection. Our findings suggest that the impact of elevated CO2 levels and Wolbachia infection on the H. graminicola transcriptome was, to a large extent, on genes involved in metabolic processes. This study is the first description of transcriptome changes in response to elevated CO2 levels and Wolbachia infection in spiders.

High mesophyll conductance in the high-yielding rice cultivar Takanari quantified with the combined gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements under free-air CO2 enrichment

ABSTRACTAn effective strategy for increasing crop production is increasing the rate of photosynthesis. In this study, we conducted gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements for a high-yielding rice cultivar, Takanari, to identify the leaf physiological properties that contribute to high capacity for photosynthesis of the uppermost leaves before (panicle initiation stage) and after heading (grain-filling stage) in the Tsukuba free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) facility. The higher photosynthesis rate of Takanari compared with that of the commonly cultivated cultivar, Koshihikari, was mainly attributed to the greater stomatal conductance for CO2 (gsc) at the panicle initiation stage and to the greater mesophyll conductance (gm) at the grain-filling stage in both current and elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations [CO2]. Takanari had a higher level of leaf nitrogen content (Nl) compared with Koshihikari at the grain-filling stage, which led to greater gm and maximum carboxylation rate (Vc,max), but Nl alone did not explain the variations of gm within the variety. A clear correlation was found between Vc,max and Nl. Calculating Vc,max taking gm into consideration removed the artifact of Vc,max25 in relation to Nl that was observed when gm was assumed to be infinite. Our results emphasize the need to separate the roles of Vc,max and gm to accurately understand the ecophysiological processes that control leaf photosynthesis in Takanari.

Evidence for fire in the Pliocene Arctic in response to amplified temperature

Abstract. The mid-Pliocene is a valuable time interval for investigating equilibrium climate at current atmospheric CO2 concentrations because atmospheric CO2 concentrations are thought to have been comparable to the current day and yet the climate and distribution of ecosystems were quite different. One intriguing, but not fully understood, feature of the early to mid-Pliocene climate is the amplified Arctic temperature response and its impact on Arctic ecosystems. Only the most recent models appear to correctly estimate the degree of warming in the Pliocene Arctic and validation of the currently proposed feedbacks is limited by scarce terrestrial records of climate and environment. Here we reconstruct the summer temperature and fire regime from a subfossil fen-peat deposit on west–central Ellesmere Island, Canada, that has been chronologically constrained using cosmogenic nuclide burial dating to 3.9+1.5/-0.5 Ma. The estimate for average mean summer temperature is 15.4±0.8 ∘C using specific bacterial membrane lipids, i.e., branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers. This is above the proposed threshold that predicts a substantial increase in wildfire in the modern high latitudes. Macro-charcoal was present in all samples from this Pliocene section with notably higher charcoal concentration in the upper part of the sequence. This change in charcoal was synchronous with a change in vegetation that included an increase in abundance of fire-promoting Pinus and Picea. Paleo-vegetation reconstructions are consistent with warm summer temperatures, relatively low summer precipitation and an incidence of fire comparable to fire-adapted boreal forests of North America and central Siberia. To our knowledge, this site provides the northernmost evidence of fire during the Pliocene. It suggests that ecosystem productivity was greater than in the present day, providing fuel for wildfires, and that the climate was conducive to the ignition of fire during this period. The results reveal that interactions between paleo-vegetation and paleoclimate were mediated by fire in the High Arctic during the Pliocene, even though CO2 concentrations were similar to modern values.

A comparative life cycle assessment based evaluation of greenhouse gas emission and social study: natural fibre versus glass fibre reinforced plastic automotive parts

Current atmospheric CO2 concentration in our atmosphere is already over 400 ppm, which is 50 ppm beyond our planetary boundary. Every single step towards reducing our carbon emission is important. Fuel saving due to the light weighting of the automotive materials will reduce greenhouse gas emission in the transportation sector, if the light weighting roots from a by-product natural fibre, such as sawdust or agricultural waste, the emission reduction would be more effective. The current study is a comparative life cycle assessment based evaluation of greenhouse gas emission of the current plastic engine beauty cover, and natural fibre reinforced counterpart. This study also analyses the questionnaire results gotten from 600 new car owners (or leaser) as a small sample of a buyer society.

Effectiveness of agronomic practices in dealing with climate change impacts in the Australian cotton industry — A simulation study

Climate change is threatening the viability of cotton production in one of the world's leading cotton regions but we do not know the magnitude of the threat and how effective the common management options are in responding to the threat. This study aims to answer these two questions by using a system modelling approach under various climate change and management scenarios. To construct local climate change scenarios (CCSs) for key cotton production areas in eastern Australia daily outputs from the CSIRO Conformal Cubic Atmospheric Model driven by four general circulation models (GCMs) were used in a stochastic weather generator, LARS-WG. These CCSs were then linked to a process-oriented cotton model (CSIRO OZCOT) to quantify the effect of changing planting times and irrigation scheduling triggers on cotton lint yield, water use, and water use efficiency (WUE) in 2030. We considered four planting times: normal planting, 15days early, and 15 and 30days later in both irrigated and rain-fed cotton. For irrigated cotton, we considered two soil water deficits (50 and 70mm) below which an irrigation event was triggered in nine cotton production areas (Emerald, Dalby, St George, Goondiwindi, Moree, Bourke, Narrabri, Warren and Hillston). For rain-fed cotton, we considered three row configurations (solid, single skip and double skip) in four production areas: Emerald, Dalby, Moree and Narrabri.Simulations for irrigated cotton (access to full water, no nitrogen limitation), when compared with baseline (current climate and atmospheric CO2 concentration with normal planting), show that lint yield, water use and WUE decreased in 2030 in the majority of study locations with both irrigation triggers under normal planting. The impact of planting time could not offset the negative impact of future climate change on cotton lint yield in 2030 across both irrigation triggers at all locations except for Dalby. The 30day late planting and irrigation at 50mm deficit performed better than their respective counterpart(s).Simulating rain-fed cotton (assuming full soil water profile at planting), when compared with baseline, lint yield and water use increased at Emerald and Narrabri and decreased at Dalby and Moree across row configurations in 2030 with normal planting; and WUE increased by 15.5% under future climate scenarios with normal planting. Early planting decreased lint yield by 8 to 18% at Dalby and Moree while late planting increased lint yield by up to 30%; the later the planting, the greater increase in lint yield at Emerald, Dalby and Moree.The simulation results indicate that the response of cotton to climate change is variable and region specific, which suggests that different management strategies may be required for each situation. Cotton growers will need to consider which management options best suit their circumstances.

Photoperiod and Nitrogen Supply Limit the Scope of Northward Migration and Seed Transfer of Black Spruce in a Future Climate Associated with Doubled Atmospheric CO2 Concentration

The predicated changes in precipitation and temperature associated with the continued elevation of atmospheric CO2 concentration will trigger the northward shift of the Climate Envelopes for 130 North America tree species by as much as 10 degrees. However, climate envelope models do not take into account changes in other factors that may also influence the survival and growth of plants at the predicted new locations, such as photoperiod and nutrient regimes. This study investigated how photoperiod and nitrogen supply would affect the ecophysiological traits of black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill) B. S. P.) that are critical for survival and growth at new locations predicted by climate envelope models. We exposed black spruce seedlings to the photoperiod regime at the seed origin (PS) and that 10° north of the seed origin (PNM) as predicted by climate envelope models under the current and doubled atmospheric CO2 concentration and different levels of N supply (30 vs. 300 μmol·mol-1 N). We found that the PNM and the 30 μmol·mol-1 N supply both had negative impact on the development of seedling cold hardiness in the fall, and led to earlier burst of the terminal bud and greater rate of mortality in the following growing season. While the PNM stimulated seedling growth in the first growing season, the effect was not sustained in the second growing season. Our results suggest that the photoperiod regimes and poor nutrient conditions at higher latitudes will likely constrain the scope of the northward migration or seed transfer of black spruce.

Physiological response of Crocosphaera watsonii to enhanced and fluctuating carbon dioxide conditions.

We investigated the effects of elevated pCO2 on cultures of the unicellular N2-fixing cyanobacterium Crocosphaera watsonii WH8501. Using CO2-enriched air, cultures grown in batch mode under high light intensity were exposed to initial conditions approximating current atmospheric CO2 concentrations (∼400 ppm) as well as CO2 levels corresponding to low- and high-end predictions for the year 2100 (∼750 and 1000 ppm). Following acclimation to CO2 levels, the concentrations of particulate carbon (PC), particulate nitrogen (PN), and cells were measured over the diurnal cycle for a six-day period spanning exponential and early stationary growth phases. High rates of photosynthesis and respiration resulted in biologically induced pCO2 fluctuations in all treatments. Despite this observed pCO2 variability, and consistent with previous experiments conducted under stable pCO2 conditions, we observed that elevated mean pCO2 enhanced rates of PC production, PN production, and growth. During exponential growth phase, rates of PC and PN production increased by ∼1.2- and ∼1.5-fold in the mid- and high-CO2 treatments, respectively, when compared to the low-CO2 treatment. Elevated pCO2 also enhanced PC and PN production rates during early stationary growth phase. In all treatments, PC and PN cellular content displayed a strong diurnal rhythm, with particulate C:N molar ratios reaching a high of 22∶1 in the light and a low of 5.5∶1 in the dark. The pCO2 enhancement of metabolic rates persisted despite pCO2 variability, suggesting a consistent positive response of Crocosphaera to elevated and fluctuating pCO2 conditions.

Interactive Effects of Elevated CO2 and Temperature on Rice Planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens

It is predicted that the current atmospheric CO2 concentration will be doubled and global mean temperature will increase by 1.5–6°C by the end of this century. Although a number of studies have addressed the separate effects of CO2 and temperature on plant-insect interactions, few have concerned with their combined impacts. In the current study, a factorial experiment was carried out to examine the effect of a doubling CO2 concentration and a 3°C temperature increase on a complete generation of the brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens) on rice (Oryza sativa). Both elevated CO2 and temperature increased rice stem height and biomass of stem parts. Leaf chlorophyll content increased under elevated CO2, but only in ambient temperature treatment. Water content of stem parts was reduced under elevated temperature, but only when coupled with elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 alone increased biomass of root and elevated temperature alone enhanced leaf area and reduced ratio of root to stem parts. Brown planthopper (BPH) nymphal development was accelerated, and weight of and honeydew excretion by the F1 adults was reduced under elevated temperature only. Longevity of brachypterous females was affected by a significant interaction between CO2 and temperature. At elevated temperature, CO2 had no effect on female longevity, but at ambient temperature, the females lived shorter under elevated CO2. Female fecundity was higher at elevated than at ambient temperature and higher at elevated CO2 than at ambient CO2. These results indicate that the combined effects of elevated temperature and CO2 may enhance the brown planthopper population size.

Leaf respiration in darkness and in the light under pre-industrial, current and elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations

Our study sought to understand how past, low atmospheric CO2 concentrations ([CO2]) impact respiration (R) of soybean (Glycine max), when compared to plants grown under current and future [CO2]s. Experiments were conducted using plants grown under 290, 400 and 700ppm [CO2]. Leaf R was measured in both darkness (RD) and in the light (RL; using the Kok method), with short-term changes in measurement [CO2] and [O2] being used to explore the relationship between light inhibition of leaf R and photorespiration. Root R, photosynthesis (A), leaf [N] and biomass allocation traits were also quantified. In contrast to the inhibitory effect of low growth [CO2] on A, growth [CO2] had no significant effect on leaf RD or root R. Irrespective of growth [CO2], RL was always lower than RD, with light inhibiting leaf R by 17–47%. Importantly, the degree of light inhibition of leaf R was lowest in plants grown under low [CO2], with variations in RL being positively correlated with RD and photorespiration. Irrespective of whether leaf R was measured in the light or dark, a greater proportion of the carbon fixed by leaf photosynthesis was released by leaf R in plants grown under low [CO2] than under current/future [CO2]’s. Collectively, our results highlight the differential responses of A and R to growth of plants under low to elevated atmospheric [CO2].

Climate change impacts and potential benefits of drought and heat tolerance in chickpea in South Asia and East Africa

Using CROPGRO-Chickpea model (revised version), we investigated the impacts of climate change on the productivity of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) at selected sites in South Asia (Hisar, Indore and Nandhyal in India and Zaloke in Myanmar) and East Africa (Debre Zeit in Ethiopia, Kabete in Kenya and Ukiriguru in Tanzania). We also investigated the potential benefits of incorporating drought and heat tolerance traits in chickpea using the chickpea model and the virtual cultivars approach. As compared to the baseline climate, the climate change by 2050 (including CO2) increased the yield of chickpea by 17% both at Hisar and Indore, 18% at Zaloke, 25% at Debre Zeit and 18% at Kabete; whereas the yields decreased by 16% at Nandhyal and 7% at Ukiriguru. The yield benefit due to increased CO2 by 2050 ranged from 7 to 20% across sites as compared to the yields under current atmospheric CO2 concentration; while the changes in temperature and rainfall had either positive or negative impact on yield at the sites. Yield potential traits (maximum leaf photosynthesis rate, partitioning of daily growth to pods and seed-filling duration each increased by 10%) increased the yield of virtual cultivars up to 12%. Yield benefit due to drought tolerance across sites was up to 22% under both baseline and climate change scenarios. Heat tolerance increased the yield of chickpea up to 9% at Hisar and Indore under baseline climate, and up to 13% at Hisar, Indore, Nandhyal and Ukiriguru under climate change. At other sites (Zaloke, Debre Zeit and Kabete) the incorporation of heat tolerance under climate change had no beneficial effect on yield. Considering varied crop responses to each plant trait across sites, this study was useful in prioritizing the plant traits for location-specific breeding of chickpea cultivars for higher yields under climate change at the selected sites in South Asia and East Africa.
