Current Challenges in Development of a Database of Three-Dimensional Chemical Structures.

We are developing a database named 3DMET, a three-dimensional structure database of natural metabolites. There are two major impediments to the creation of 3D chemical structures from a set of planar structure drawings: the limited accuracy of computer programs and insufficient human resources for manual curation. We have tested some 2D–3D converters to convert 2D structure files from external databases. These automatic conversion processes yielded an excessive number of improper conversions. To ascertain the quality of the conversions, we compared IUPAC Chemical Identifier and canonical SMILES notations before and after conversion. Structures whose notations correspond to each other were regarded as a correct conversion in our present work. We found that chiral inversion is the most serious factor during the improper conversion. In the current stage of our database construction, published books or articles have been resources for additions to our database. Chemicals are usually drawn as pictures on the paper. To save human resources, an optical structure reader was introduced. The program was quite useful but some particular errors were observed during our operation. We hope our trials for producing correct 3D structures will help other developers of chemical programs and curators of chemical databases.

Biocuration with insufficient resources and fixed timelines.

Biological curation, or biocuration, is often studied from the perspective of creating and maintaining databases that have the goal of mapping and tracking certain areas of biology. However, much biocuration is, in fact, dedicated to finite and time-limited projects in which insufficient resources demand trade-offs. This typically more ephemeral type of curation is nonetheless of importance in biomedical research. Here, I propose a framework to understand such restricted curation projects from the point of view of return on curation (ROC), value, efficiency and productivity. Moreover, I suggest general strategies to optimize these curation efforts, such as the ‘multiple strategies’ approach, as well as a metric called overhead that can be used in the context of managing curation resources.

Contemporary Issues of Sustainable Rural Development: International Approaches and Experiences of Eastern Europe and Russia: Monograph

Growing attention is paid by economists worldwide to research and assessment of economic sustainability. The relevance of ensurance of sustainable development is explained by the necessity to provide certain conditions for sustainable development and raising of living standards by means of effective utilization of the existing resources. The range of definitions, which describe the essence of sustainable development, are interpreted broadly, but all definitions agree that sustainable development considers a correspondence of current and future life necessities. However, the issue of sustainable rural development is even broader, since it unites the complex aggregation of economic, agricultural, environmental, infrastructural, cultural, and social aspects. Besides, it is necessary to consider the regional specifics of particular rural territories. We believe that such complexity of issues related to ensurance of sustainable rural development should be researched through an effective combination of national and international approaches. While the national approach lets to study particular problems of rural territories within the country (or even more locally, within a region or territory), international approach provides a broader vision of those problems, gives an opportunity to study experiences of other countries and to gain the best practices from them. This monograph is a result of joint research of international team from four countries: Russia, Serbia, Romania, and Ukraine. It addresses a wide range of issues related to ensurance of sustainable rural development by means of international and national agrarian policies, liberalization of international trade, rural tourism, development of resort areas, utilization of environmental and resort potentials of Europe, CIS and Russia. Apart from general issues of sustainable development on the international and national levels (international trade, liberalization, food security, state support of agriculture, international and state agrarian policies, etc.), the monograph presents the case studies of several regions, including Danube region and Caucasus Mineral Waters resort area. It considers perspectives of rural tourism as a driver of sustainable rural development, issues of rational nature management and utilization of environmental and resort resources in various countries, financial aspects of sustainable development and perspectives of agricultural cooperative structures in rural territories. The special consideration is given to environmental issues of sustainable rural development. The researches present their investigations of ecological sustainability within agriculture, environmental aspects of European reforms and new Common Agricultural Policies, and problems of effective preservation and increase of rational implementation of environmental, climatic, natural curative and recreational resources. We appreciate all authors of the monograph for their high level of professionalism, invaluable contributions, manifold approaches and research methods implemented, as well as for their devotion to the problems of sustainable development. We believe that the results of the given research would impact into the ensurance of sustainable rural development in our countries, and would be beneficial to other related researches worldwide.

Radiation Hormesis: High-Radiation Dose Equivalents in Hot Springs Enhancing Curative Practices

The present study introduces records of radiation doses due to Natural Radioactivity measured in the investigations we have already carried out in various natural curative resources in Jordan, major of them include mineral and hot springs and the salt water and the volcanic mud of the Dead Sea. The investigated spots, in this study and other related studies, are located in Tafila, Irbid, Karak, and the Dead Sea. These data emphasis on new findings of different radiation dose rates, to identify the impacts of radiation exposures on public health. Using the assumption of radiation-Hormesis model about the astonishing effects of natural radiation doses, the author recommends that these doses existing in the investigated areas, improve the people health and increase average life span with less disease, and decrease incidence of cancer. This benefit will be added to promote health tourism, which have a tendency to be more active, and more competitive, where it challenges other kinds of tourism.

P01-256 - Perception of disease and pathways to care in bipolar disorder

IntroductionBipolar disorder (BD) is a major psychiatric disorder that has important consequences for those who live with it. Day by day new contributions for diagnosis and treatment appear thanks to a continuous research advance. However there are many challenges to defeat such as the pathways to care that bipolar patients choose, and the different factors that have an impact on seeking for treatment.ObjectiveTo describe the role that perception of disease has on the selection of pathways to care in patients with BD.AimsTo generate information to augment the available data for specific interventions in bipolar patients.MethodsWe studied perception of disease in six patients with BD through focused interviews. The results were analyzed from a qualitative approach.ResultsWe found that even when the main type of health care practices reported by these patients had to do with the allopathic form, usually they combine and try different health care forms. This allows each patient to build their own pathway to care in order to meet their needs and their suffering from living with BD.ConclusionsPathways to care in BD are composed of a combination of health care practices, this situation happens because the patient needs to look for the possibility to get a stock of potential alternatives of treatment which allow to maximize his/her curative resources. Beside this, having a variety of treatment modalities helps bipolar people to deal with the different issues that are part of the experience of living with BD.

Early American decorative arts, 1620-1860: a handbook for interpreters

Winterthur Museum is world renowned for its decorative arts collections and its strong interpretive programs. During the half century since Winterthur opened to the public, its staff has worked to compile comprehensive training materials for Winterthur interpreters, culminating in the Handbook for Winterthur Interpreters. Now, Winterthur educators Rosemary Krill and Pauline Eversmann have adapted that guide for general use. Early American Decorative Arts, 1620-1860: A Handbook for Interpreters is an indispensable guide for anyone involved with interpretation of decorative arts collections. Krill and Eversmann first define and elucidate the principles and goals of interpretation, explain how to look at objects, and help the reader to understand style. Then in later chapters they provide comprehensive descriptions and explanations of many items in styles ranging from seventeenth-century Mannerist to Empire, or Late Classical. Included are furniture, ceramics, textiles, paintings, pictures and prints, glass, pewter, and clocks, as well as other objects. Their interpretive approach situates each type and style within the social, economic, and cultural contexts of its time. An International Bioinformatics Infrastructure to Underpin the Arabidopsis Community

The future bioinformatics needs of the Arabidopsis community as well as those of other scientific communities that depend on Arabidopsis resources were discussed at a pair of recent meetings held by the Multinational Arabidopsis Steering Committee and the North American Arabidopsis Steering Committee. There are extensive tools and resources for information storage, curation, and retrieval of Arabidopsis data that have been developed over recent years primarily through the activities of The Arabidopsis Information Resource, the Nottingham Arabidopsis Stock Centre, and the Arabidopsis Biological Resource Center, among others. However, the rapid expansion in many data types, the international basis of the Arabidopsis community, and changing priorities of the funding agencies all suggest the need for changes in the way informatics infrastructure is developed and maintained. We propose that there is a need for a single core resource that is integrated into a larger international consortium of investigators. We envision this to consist of a distributed system of data, tools, and resources, accessed via a single information portal and funded by a variety of sources, under shared international management of an International Arabidopsis Informatics Consortium (IAIC). This article outlines the proposal for the development, management, operations, and continued funding for the IAIC.

The Gene Wiki: community intelligence applied to human gene annotation.

Annotating the function of all human genes is a critical, yet formidable, challenge. Current gene annotation efforts focus on centralized curation resources, but it is increasingly clear that this approach does not scale with the rapid growth of the biomedical literature. The Gene Wiki utilizes an alternative and complementary model based on the principle of community intelligence. Directly integrated within the online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, the goal of this effort is to build a gene-specific review article for every gene in the human genome, where each article is collaboratively written, continuously updated and community reviewed. Previously, we described the creation of Gene Wiki ‘stubs’ for approximately 9000 human genes. Here, we describe ongoing systematic improvements to these articles to increase their utility. Moreover, we retrospectively examine the community usage and improvement of the Gene Wiki, providing evidence of a critical mass of users and editors. Gene Wiki articles are freely accessible within the Wikipedia web site, and additional links and information are available at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Gene_Wiki.

Curating the Georgian Interior: From Period Rooms to Marketplace?

In the twentieth century the Victoria and Albert Museum (VA from the display of period rooms and from the pioneering restorations at Ham House, Osterley Park and Apsley House.1 The open ing of the British Galleries in 2001 was a critical and popular success and a turning point in the presentation of the V&A's period rooms.2 Costing .?31 million and occupying ten per cent of the V&A's gallery space, the British Galleries are a major component of the muse um's renewed public offer and profile. The changes pose many questions about the status of interiors as a resource for curators and historians. At the time of opening, the redisplay prompted discussion as to the role the period rooms play in the new British Galleries, compared with their more prominent place in the for mer installations. Has the interior become of greater or lesser interest and value? Does their selection, res toration and redisplay reflect wider changes in curato rial attitudes to the use of historic house interiors? Do

Provision of health care in rural Afghanistan: needs and challenges.

Afghanistan's health system is severely limited in terms of preventive and curative services, referral systems, and human resources. Most of the country's citizens reside in rural areas, a majority of which are served by "basic health units" (small and simple facilities that provide primary care), and these rural residents face additional challenges regarding timely access to quality health care. The analysis described in this article, which focuses on data derived from 2 rural health units during a 1-year period, revealed that infectious diseases, mainly acute respiratory infections, were a primary concern and that there is a clear need for increasing access to health services. In addition, our results showed that women are underrepresented as patients and appear to be at higher risk than men of tuberculosis.

The SOFG Anatomy Entry List (SAEL): an annotation tool for functional genomics data.

A great deal of data in functional genomics studies needs to be annotated with low-resolution anatomical terms. For example, gene expression assays based on manually dissected samples (microarray, SAGE, etc.) need high-level anatomical terms to describe sample origin. First-pass annotation in high-throughput assays (e.g. large-scale in situ gene expression screens or phenotype screens) and bibliographic applications, such as selection of keywords, would also benefit from a minimum set of standard anatomical terms. Although only simple terms are required, the researcher faces serious practical problems of inconsistency and confusion, given the different aims and the range of complexity of existing anatomy ontologies. A Standards and Ontologies for Functional Genomics (SOFG) group therefore initiated discussions between several of the major anatomical ontologies for higher vertebrates. As we report here, one result of these discussions is a simple, accessible, controlled vocabulary of gross anatomical terms, the SOFG Anatomy Entry List (SAEL). The SAEL is available from http://www.sofg.org and is intended as a resource for biologists, curators, bioinformaticians and developers of software supporting functional genomics. It can be used directly for annotation in the contexts described above. Importantly, each term is linked to the corresponding term in each of the major anatomy ontologies. Where the simple list does not provide enough detail or sophistication, therefore, the researcher can use the SAEL to choose the appropriate ontology and move directly to the relevant term as an entry point. The SAEL links will also be used to support computational access to the respective ontologies.

Culture shock and a peace corps field mental health program

The Peace Corps has developed a unique mental health guidance program to facilitate the selection and training of volunteers. It is pointed out, however, that there are some limitations in this overall program. The Peace Corps staff physician acts as the activator of preventive and curative psychiatric resources in the field. Culture shock provides the focal point for nearly all overseas adjustment problems. The author devised a field mental health program upon group therapy precepts in order to minimize the effects of adjustment dilemmas. A preliminary evaluation of this type of program with the Bolivian Peace Corps contingent indicates it is effective.
