Sitcoms Say Goodbye: The Cultural Spectacle of Seinfeld's Last Episode

Sitcoms rarely say goodbye. Most simply disappear at stroke, the victims of poor ratings that force their cancellation. Increasingly, however, sitcoms call attention to their departure and invite the entire nation to witness their farewell. The hype surrounding the closing episode of Seinfeld (May 14, 1998), in particular, elevated it to the status of cultural spectacle. As columnist Caryn James noted, “'Seinfeld' has been at the center of the longest, most carefully orchestrated goodbye in television history” (1).

Outta My Endzone

This article proposes an analytical framework for sport that emerges from the interplay of elements of postmodern, gay, and queer theories. Embarking on a demythologizing trajectory, the article suggests that competitive sport fosters the emotional logic that is embedded in the will to power produced by the mythical union of an ever-expanding phallus and territorially enclosing anus—these work together in sport in the desire to conquer the space of the other and protectively enclose the space of the self. Drawing parallels, the violating phallus with the desire to win and the closed anus with the desire not to lose, the article deconstructs the emotional logic of sport as a celebration of patriarchal violation and homophobic resistance to penetration. As an immensely popular cultural spectacle and practice, therefore, competitive sport plays an important role in the reproduction of phallically aggressive and anally closed cultures of desire.

The article offers a brief description of the various forms of functioning of the Sar Multi-Purpose Palace: from the general idea of the design which distinguishes and complements spaces for the development of different entertainment and sports activities, to the different ways of using the area (sports and cultural spectacles and even as head offices of regular basketball teams). Finally, special emphasis is made on the structural solution of the roof on the functioning of the installations, and in particular, on the image offered by such a building, with the final aim of achieving a long-lasting life.

Superbowl XXVI: Reflections on the manufacture of appearance

In January 1992 Minneapolis‐St. Paul hosted the Superbowl, offering an unparalleled opportunity to examine the manufacture of the appearance of reality. A team of documentary photographers set out to portray the cultural spectacle unfolding in our community, and we too were swept into the tide of hype and celebrity. The role of power elites in framing appearances and the consent of the public are examined, with attention to the strategies used to shape the nature of possible representations of the Superbowl and related activities. The restrictions confronting doc‐umentarians attempting to penetrate a prepackaged visual event are also examined.

The Olympics: A Sociological Perspective

The modern Olympic Games have grown into a social and cultural spectacle without parallel in kind or scope. In spite of its goals of mutual understanding, the Olympic movement has been quite powerless in promoting peace and understanding. Rather, it has become an institution whose primary function is the consolidation of the existing order. Not the individual athlete but the nation-state is the primary unit of the Olympic system. Olympics are misused for political purposes. They depend on the world power balance and on business and are best described by the trinity of Nationalism, Commercialism and Athletism.

National Character in the Perspective of Cultural Geography

The geographer's concern with national character stems from his traditional interest in the mutual relations be tween a people and their land. Each society perceives the habitat through its own cultural spectacles and molds the land according to its needs and tastes. Thus, to the trained ob server the "cultural landscape" reveals in many ways the char acter of the people. The regional approach, a favorite tech nique of geographers, discloses meaningful localized patterns. Modern civilization tends to weaken provincialism, but it does not erase regionalism. Attention is drawn to "electoral geog raphy" and the regional novel as means to comprehend subcul tures within a nation. The question is raised whether "na tional character" is largely the value system and style of the dominant region. If so, national character may change when action centers shift. From ancient times the popular belief persists that the physical environment affects, if not determines, national character. To the scholar it presents a fascinating but elusive problem. Perhaps the reawakened interest in the ecological approach will bring new insights.
