Book Monuments of the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library and their Integration into the Electronic Collection

Preservation and accessibility of cultural heritage, the most important part of which are book monuments, is the main task of libraries and other cultural institutions.An important achievement in the implementation of the state policy was the consolidation in the Russian legislation of the norms governing the work with book monuments, the formation of the Register of Book Monuments, the creation of the site “Book Monuments” within the framework of the national project “Culture”, being the part of the National Electronic Library.The article presents the first results of work on the identification, study and digitization of book monuments from the collection of rare books stored in the non-digital collection of the Presidential Library.The purpose of this article is to introduce researchers to book monuments from the collection of rare books of the Presidential Library, the peculiarities of presenting their digital copies in the library's electronic collection.A brief description of the documents identified in the collection of rare books with signs of book monuments is given. Among them, there are early printed books; books with autographs, records of scientific, historical, cultural interest; books from personal collections of prominent people, etc. Considerable attention is paid to the description of the rarest and most interesting copies. The basic principles and approaches to digitization and presentation of book monuments in the central collection of electronic documents are considered. Special attention is paid to the experience of the Presidential Library in forming the digital collection “Book Monuments of the Presidential Library”, which includes selected domestic and foreign editions published before 1830.

Motivation as an Axiological Factor in Learning Chinese.

Motivation and a positive attitude play a decisive role in learning any foreign language. This study aims to investigate the motivation behind learning Chinese language in Central Asia and Russia and to identify the main problems related to mastering this language in those countries. The study draws on an anonymous questionnaire survey involving students and multiple oral interviews with Chinese language learners and teachers. The information was collected and analyzed manually by the researchers. The resulting statistical data was generated in Microsoft Excel and then presented as charts and tables. Through a student survey and teacher interviews, the study identified the long-term and short-term motivators for learning Chinese language, namely study (5%), cultural interest (7%), friendship (15%), cross-border communication (20%), travel intentions (25%), and greater employment opportunities (28%). The most common reason for learning the language was a desire to work in China (28%), and the least popular one was to study there (5%). Teachers defined motivation as a major challenge in teaching Chinese language (79%). According to teachers, learners with low motivation and unmotivated individuals are hardly responding to what happens in the classroom. The results of the study may be used as a platform for further research in education, teaching, psychology and linguistics.

Motivation factors in learning Azerbaijani and Turkish languages in Moscow

Learning foreign languages is an important component of personal and professional development. There are a large number of national communities in Moscow, including Azerbaijani and Turkish, and more and more people are paying attention to learning the languages of these countries. In this article, we will study the motivation for studying Azerbaijani and Turkish in Moscow. Let's look at how learning these languages can help when communicating with native speakers, traveling, in professional activities and how this can help expand cultural horizons. We will also consider the most popular motives for learning these languages among students in Moscow. The object of this article is the motivation of students and students living in Moscow when studying Azerbaijani and Turkish languages. The subject of the article is an analysis of the motivation factors that inspire people to study Azerbaijani and Turkish in Moscow, such as cultural interest, employment opportunities, study, communication and other factors that can be identified in the research process. The article will also describe the different motivations of each language learner, their personal experiences and opinions about it, as well as general preferences in language learning.

The Influence of Online Liberal Arts English on College Students’ Intercultural Interest

The goal of the current study is to determine whether online liberal arts English classes can improve students' cultural awareness and interest. The online English learning environment has drawn a lot of attention from EFL educators as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic. There are several factors that have an impact on the culture aspects of EFL learning. Yet, there is scant research showing how certain features of culture learning can be effectively applied in the Korean EFL context. This study investigates the links between English language proficiency, pre-interest, and interactions with instructors to determine whether aspects of online liberal arts English classes have a favorable impact on students' interest in foreign cultures. Participants came from 84 Listening, Reading, Speaking I and II classes, totaling 1,421. With the use of Microsoft Teams, the classes were delivered online for 15 weeks. After that, a survey was used to measure students’ pre-interest in English language learning, language achievement, interactions with professors, and cultural understanding. The results of that survey—which used the Naver Office Form—were evaluated using SPSS version 26 to examine any relevant statistics. The findings identified three factors that contribute to students' cultural understanding and interest in online liberal arts English classes. Among these factors, interactions with instructors had the most significant impact, followed by pre-interest and language proficiency. The data suggests that interactions with professors during online EFL classes play a more critical role in promoting students' understanding and interest in other cultures than factors such as English language achievement and pre-interest in English. The effect was particularly pronounced in speaking I and II classes. Therefore, it is crucial for educators to utilize various methods and technologies to encourage interactions between students and professors in online EFL classes. This study makes a significant contribution to the literature by analyzing the specific factors that influence students' cultural understanding and interest and highlighting the critical role of interactions with professors in online liberal arts English classes.

A virtual reality-based collaborative argument mapping approach in the EFL classroom

ABSTRACT In language learning, it is important to foster students’ computational thinking and improve their skills of building arguments and dialectical structure, teamwork, and decision accuracy. This is especially so in English language courses which aim to promote students’ cultural learning interest, creative thinking, and oral presentation. Collaborative argument mapping is an appropriate strategy to elicit those objectives. However, in the emergency distance learning (EDL) context, when online instruction lacks real-world learning and face-to-face interaction, it is challenging to teach units on cultural issues in authentic contexts. Therefore, in this study, the virtual reality-based collaborative argument mapping approach was developed to address this problem. A quasi-experiment was designed with a total of 45 EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students. The experimental result showed that the virtual reality-based collaborative argument mapping approach (VR-CAM) improved the students’ English oral presentation more than did the non-virtual reality-based collaborative argument mapping approach (non-VR-CAM). Although the VR-CAM group scored higher than the non-VR-CAM group on cultural learning interest, the two groups did not significantly differ. Furthermore, in the computational and creative thinking aspects, students who learned with VR-CAM performed significantly better than those who learned with non-VR-CAM over time.

Historic building and green energy. Strategies to make supply from renewable sources compatible with conservation

The challenges of today are largely summarized in the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Buildings are also part of the 17 sustainability goals in several respects, one of them being the role of reducing climate-altering emissions, reducing waste, assessing the life cycle of materials, limiting heat loss and introducing renewable energy sources. In particular, the contribution deals with how to ensure the supply of energy from renewable sources for cultural assets and buildings that are part of historic centers. In these cases it can be very difficult to achieve both the objective of protecting the monument or landscape as well as that of installing or connecting the building or urban or rural settlement to renewable energy sources. Through some European and Italian examples in particular, where about 8 million buildings were constructed before 1945, about 25% of the total, virtuous ways will be presented that make it possible to achieve both objectives simultaneously. The regulations that favor this dual objective will also be highlighted, such as the one of the Veneto Region on so-called energy communities and the national one that allows the deferral of energy production from one place of cultural interest to another that has none, without serious costs for the final beneficiary and safeguarding the cultural asset.

Social Inclusion of the Elderly as an Indicator of the Quality of Life

The article analyzes the quality of life of elderly people aged over 55 years in Bulgaria concerning their social inclusion in society; the analysis is based on a representative social survey of people aged 55+ entitled “Study on the Quality of Life of People Aged 55+ in Bulgaria”, conducted in 2022 by the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. One thousand thirty respondents were surveyed. In the article, the quality of life of elderly people in terms of their social inclusion is studied through objective and subjective indicators. The survey results indisputably show that, by objective indicators of social inclusion of elderly people, the degree of social engagement of people aged 55+ in Bulgaria is not exceptionally high; such engagement consists, above all, of frequent social contact with close relatives, friends and neighbors, and assisting relatives, friends, and neighbors. The levels of social inclusion fall sharply regarding formalized social participation in volunteer activities for various organizations or even attendance at cultural events and interest clubs. However, we find that in terms of subjective assessments, the level of social engagement of elderly people corresponds fully to their needs and expectations for a whole and meaningful life, which thus makes satisfaction with the degree of social inclusion as a subjective indicator of the quality of social life, a factor that links the two levels of quality of life – individual and social. Thus, although objective indicators of social inclusion of elderly people in our country do not always indicate high levels of social engagement, subjective satisfaction with social inclusion points to a quality of life at the social level that fulfills the conditions for social cohesion and integration of elderly people in the life of society.

New on the Polish American Publications Scene: PAHA Books

The PAHA Publications Subcommittee was formed and charged with considering the creation of a PAHA Imprints Series that would evaluate for publication works of merit in the area of Polish Diaspora Studies, broadly defined, which were deemed not commercially viable for a university press or commercial publisher; such works might include but not necessarily be limited to unpublished M.A. theses and other works of historical, literary, or other scholarly interest; non-fiction, fiction, poetry; and documents of scholarly or cultural merit and interest but limited market potential. Such an imprint series would be meant to compliment and not compete with existing Polish-content publishing projects. Also, given all of the tasks associated with this project and its vast potential, it was envisioned that this publication program would not need to exceed one or two books per year.With Board authorization, the PAHA Publications Sub-Committee (Anna Jaroszyńska-Kirchmann, Anna Muller, Dorota Praszalowicz, John Bukowczyk (chair), Jim Pula, and Neal Pease) met online several times through 2022.After extensive discussion, the sub-committee, by unanimous vote, prepared a motion to establish a PAHA Imprints Series which was approved by a vote of the Board at its midyear meeting. The Publications Sub-Committee subsequently was charged with the task of implementing the motion. In Memoriam – Thomas S. Gladsky

Tom Gladsky was born August 26, 1939, in the coal-mining community of Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. He passed away March 30, 2022, in Monroe Township, New Jersey, where he and his wife Rita had retired after long academic careers. A scholar in her own right, Rita passed away just five weeks before Tom, on February 21, 2022.Gladsky earned degrees in history and English education from Bloomsburg State Teachers College—now Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania—before going on to receive an MA in English from the University of Arizona and a PhD in American Literature from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.He joined the English Department at the University of Central Missouri, where he later served as Interim Dean of Graduate Studies, and continued his administrative career as Dean of the Graduate School and International Programs at Eastern Illinois University. While there he formed the Polish/Eastern European Cultural Interest Group for students. He later served as Academic Dean at St. Mary's College, Orchard Lake, Michigan, helping to develop the Polish and East Central European Studies Program before the college closed in 2003.Gladsky's interest in his Polish roots, combined with his literary studies, also led him to spend considerable time in Poland. He was a Fulbright Professor at Marie-Curie Sklodowska and Jagiellonian Universities, as well as a guest lecturer at the University of Rzeszow's Institute of English Studies.Princes, Peasants, & Other Polish Selves: Ethnicity in American Literature, Gladsky's 1992 study, helped ensure a place at the table for Polish American writing in the field of ethnic American literature and Polish American studies. His next book, Something of My Very Own to Say: American Women Writers of Polish Descent, which he edited with Rita Holmes Gladsky, helped open the door to what is now a well-established focus on Polish American women and on gender issues. Something of My Very Own to Say won PAHA's 1999 Halecki prize. Gladsky's stint as Project Director of PAHA's Polish American Memoirs Project underscores his interest in the making a space for the under-represented voices within Polonian history. In addition to his work on Polish American literature, Gladsky published on Polish literary figures like Jerzy Kosinski.Tom Gladsky served as PAHA president from 1998–2000, and in 2002 received the Haiman award for “sustained contribution to the study of Polish Americans.” He helped shape the universe of Polish American Studies as we now know it, and left a lasting legacy to this organization and to the scholars who took inspiration from his work.

Arriving at a Good Port: Urban and Historical Archaeology in Three Cities of the Colombian Caribbean

Colombian urban archaeology has been growing since the 1990s, particularly in Caribbean cities such as Cartagena, Barranquilla, and Santa Marta. The investigations generally respond to the need to comply with protection regulations of archaeological heritage in restoration projects of Assets of Cultural Interest (BIC, the Spanish acronym for Bienes de Interés Cultural), located in historic centers or urban infrastructure works. The results have allowed for the reconstruction of various aspects of daily life in these cities since their foundation, but they have also uncovered data on previous occupations of those same spaces during the pre-Hispanic period. There is still a need to consolidate adequate work strategies adjusted to the needs and particularities of these contexts, which increasingly require the execution of this type of archaeology project.

Physical activities traditional games and javanese culture of particularly Wayang Kulit

Abstract Physical activity has a favorable influence, including teaching students to focus on learning, as well as strengthening emotional control and emotional intelligence. Games that use technology can prevent children from feeling the game's process, from feeling how to cooperate with their peers, from learning to tolerate, understand, and forgive one another, and from inhibiting psychomotor development and cognitive (thinking) and affective (emotional). Purpose This study aims to determine how much interest teenagers have in traditional games and Javanese culture, especially Wayang Kulit in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Material and methods This research is a survey method, data collection using a questionnaire. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling with the criteria of adolescents aged 13-19 years domiciled in the Province of the Special Region of Yogyakarta totaling 478 consisting of 293 males and 185 females. Results From this study, the results obtained were the variable data of traditional games, the interest factor of teenagers in traditional games with a score of 34,946 in the "high" category, the action factor for playing traditional games with a score of 32,686 in the "medium" category. As for the Javanese culture variable regarding Wayang Kulit, the Javanese cultural interest factor scores 32,686 in the "medium" category and the action factor for Javanese culture scores 22,069 in the "low" category. Conclusions The conclusions in this study are joint effort needed whether parents always introduce Javanese culture and traditional games to their children, teachers introduce them consistently through physical education learning, and the government makes policies that require the introduction of Javanese culture and traditional games to always be carried out regularly. In addition, alternative innovations are needed to develop fun sports games to introduce Javanese culture, especially Wayang Kulit and traditional games so that if they are consistently carried out continuously, Javanese culture and traditional games will remain sustainable.

Adventure and Spiritual Restoration: Older Adult Motivations for Undertaking a Pilgrimage on El Camino de Santiago

ABSTRACT A pilgrimage is an intentional journey undertaken for reasons that can increase a sense of well-being. Although originally completed for religious purposes, motives in contemporary times may include anticipated religious, spiritual, andhumanistic benefits as well as appreciation of culture and geography. This quantitative and qualitative survey research explored the motivations of a sample subset age 65 and over from a larger study who completed one of the Camino de Santiago de Compostelaroutes in Spain. Consistent with life course and developmental theory, some respondents walked at life decision points. The analyzed sample was 111 people, nearly 60% of whom were from Canada, Mexico, and the US. Nearly 42% were non-religious while 57% were Christian or a subset, Catholic. Five key themes emerged: challenge and adventure, spirituality and intrinsic motivation, cultural or historical interest, recognition of life experiences and gratitude, and relationships. In reflecting, participants wrote about sensing a call to walk and experiencing transformation. Limitations included snowball sampling, as it is difficult to systematically sample those who complete a pilgrimage. The Santiago pilgrimage counters a narrative of aging as diminishment through positioningidentity, ego integrity, friendships and family, spirituality, and positive physical challenge at the center of aging.

ФОРМУВАННЯ КУЛЬТУРНО-ОСВІТНІХ ІНТЕРЕСІВ УЧНІВ СТАРШОЇ ШКОЛИ ЗА ДОПОМОГОЮ СУЧАСНИХ ЗАСОБІВ КОМУНІКАЦІЇ

The publication is devoted to the analysis of the formation of cultural and educational interests of high school students using modern means of communication. The selected research topic is relevant for educational practice and meets the demands of society, since the use of informational means of communication is an integral part of both the educational process and the leisure time of a modern student. Schoolchildren actively use the possibilities of modern means of communication for learning and development. The study formulated the concept of "cultural and educational interest", analyzed the features of modern high school students, outlined that it is possible to form interest in the theoretical part of education from the practical activities of students, proved the importance of the influence of Internet technologies on the lives of high school students. The publication also highlights the peculiarities of the cultural and educational activities of high school students, which include participation in online projects instead of classical education in the form of museums, exhibitions, film trips, etc. The authors also presented the results of the research, which was conducted in the form of a survey among 15-16-year-old teenagers and which is shown in the second part of the article.

Towards a similarity index of network paths in spatial networks

The mathematical analysis of a spatial network using graph theory and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for path finding, has created the need to compare possible solutions to better solve spatial problems in road networks. The paper aims to provide a comprehensive and documented selection of the identification of similar routes on a spatial network through the development of a spatial Similarity Index. The index compares the geographical characteristics of routes (altitude, length, distance from points of interest) drawn in a spatial network and calculates the percentage of similarity between the routes and the criteria that contributed to their drawing. The purpose of this multicriteria indicator is to select the optimal solution for spatial problems that occur in a network, such as transport, energy, environment, sport, and tourism. This leads to the Similarity Index serving as a reliable tool in decision-making for local and regional development. The case study is the Greek island of Lesbos, with a complex road network that develops over a relief with strong differences in altitude. In addition, there are many points of tourist, cultural and economic interest on the island, which helps to find the path that largely fulfils all geographical parameters.

Geomorphological characterization, remote sensing monitoring, and modeling of a slow-moving landslide in Alcoy (Southern Spain)

In the present paper, an active landslide located to the southeast of the urban area of Alcoy (Alicante, Spain) is analysed. This landslide affects the N-340 road, as well as an area in which some industrial buildings dated from the fifteenth century and catalogued as Places of Cultural Interest are placed. This region is characterised by the existence of a steep relief composed of materials from the Miocene to the present, on which many gravitational movements are developed. The displacements have been analysed using high-resolution spotlight mode SAR images captured by the Spanish SAR satellite PAZ (which operates at X-band), which were processed by advanced differential SAR Interferometry (A-DInSAR). The behaviour of the instability has been determined using InSAR-derived time series displacement maps. Additionally, the study has been completed with a detailed geomorphological mapping at 1:2000 scale and an analysis of structural damage carried out in situ. The landslide was modelled in 3D, from a deterministic and probabilistic point of view, confirming the global instability of the area and the relationship of the landslide with rainfall and the construction of a new road. The integration of all this information obtained and its subsequent analysis has made possible to precisely define the extension of the instability, its kinematics, and to identify the main triggering factors. This information will be crucial for the proper management of this landslide by the local authorities.

Evaluation of Geometric Data Registration of Small Objects from Non-Invasive Techniques: Applicability to the HBIM Field.

Reverse engineering and the creation of digital twins are advantageous for documenting, cataloging, and maintenance control tracking in the cultural heritage field. Digital copies of the objects into Building Information Models (BIM) add cultural interest to every artistic work. Low-cost 3D sensors, particularly structured-light scanners, have evolved towards multiple uses in the entertainment market but also as data acquisition and processing techniques for research purposes. Nowadays, with the development of structured-light data capture technologies, the geometry of objects can be recorded in high-resolution 3D datasets at a very low cost. On this basis, this research addresses a small artifact with geometric singularities that is representative of small museum objects. For this, the precision of two structured-light scanners is compared with that of the photogrammetric technique based on short-range image capture: a high-cost Artec Spider 3D scanner, and the low-cost Revopoint POP 3D scanner. Data capture accuracy is evaluated through a mathematical algorithm and point set segmentation to verify the spatial resolution. In addition, the precision of the 3D model is studied through a vector analysis in a BIM environment, an unprecedented analysis until now. The work evaluates the accuracy of the devices through algorithms and the study of point density at the submillimeter scale. Although the results of the 3D geometry may vary in a morphometric analysis depending on the device records, the results demonstrate similar accuracies in that submillimeter range. Photogrammetry achieved an accuracy of 0.70 mm versus the Artec Spider and 0.57 mm against the Revopoint POP 3D scanner.

This paper sets the objective to verify, eight years after the recognition of the exceptional universal value of the UNESCO site Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato, which strategies have been adopted to save the memory value and resource role of the ciabòt, typology of rural architecture characterizing the landscape framework of the area. Which guidelines does the Piedmont Landscape Plan provide? Do censuses and variants to urban plans represent effective tools? Through an examination of the Site, the research has investigated the outcome of the protection actions undertaken - through the updating of planning tools and the declarations of notable cultural interest, consequent to the approval of the 2017 Regional Landscape Plan - and has discussed conservation and management issues related to this fragile heritage, with a perspective on culturally sustainable development.

A KG-Based Integrated UAV Approach for Engineering Semantic Trajectories in the Cultural Heritage Documentation Domain

Data recordings of the movement of vehicles can be enriched with heterogeneous and multimodal data beyond latitude, longitude, and timestamp and enhanced with complementary segmentations, constituting a semantic trajectory. Semantic Web (SW) technologies have been extensively used for the semantic integration of heterogeneous and multimodal movement-related data, and for the effective modeling of semantic trajectories, in several domains. In this paper, we present an integrated solution for the engineering of cultural heritage semantic trajectories generated from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and represented as knowledge graphs (KGs). Particularly, this work is motivated by, and evaluated based on, the application domain of UAV missions for documenting regions/points of cultural heritage interest. In this context, this research work extends our previous work on UAV semantic trajectories, contributing (a) an updated methodology for the engineering of semantic trajectories as KGs (STaKG), (b) an implemented toolset for the management of KG-based semantic trajectories, (c) a refined ontology for the representation of knowledge related to UAV semantic trajectories and to cultural heritage documentation, and (d) the application and evaluation of the proposed methodology, the developed toolset, and the ontology within the domain of UAV-based cultural heritage documentation. The evaluation of the integrated UAV solution was achieved by exploiting real datasets collected during three UAV missions to document sites of cultural interest in Lesvos, Greece, i.e., the UNESCO-protected petrified forest of Lesvos Petrified Forest/Geopark, the village of Vrissa, and University Hill.

Factors influencing international students' trajectories: a comparative study of Chinese students in Japan and Australia

PurposeThis study aims to compare Chinese students' educational and career trajectories in Japan and Australia and to explore the factors that have influenced their choices that shaped their trajectories.Design/methodology/approachThe authors applied the push-pull and life planning models to compare the factors that shaped the Chinese students' trajectories in Japan and Australia. The mixed-method approach was adopted by combining the result of 353 questionnaire responses and ten semi-structured interviews of Chinese international graduates to understand the factors influencing their decision-makings when choosing a study destination, a workplace and a place for settlement. The authors also interviewed six human resources managers of local companies to understand how Chinese international graduates are evaluated in the host country's labor market.FindingsWhen choosing a study destination, cultural interest and inexpensive tuition fees are the pull factors for Japan, while family and friends' recommendations are strong motivations in choosing Australia. After graduation, utilization of capacity/specialty is a pull factor to work in Japan, while the prospect of promotion, good living environment and consideration for spouse/parents/children are the pull factors for Australia. Chinese graduates in Australia have stronger aspiration to remain in their study destination.Originality/valueSince there are few cross-national studies on international students' trajectories, this study filled the research gap by comparing the trajectories of Chinese students in Japan and Australia and clarifying the factors that shaped them.
