Forging Romanitas: The Intersection of Urbanization and Identity in Mérida

This paper aims to explore the role of urbanization in the formation of a shared Roman identity during the time of the Roman Empire. By examining the physical features of urban settlements and the economic opportunities that arose from them, it seeks to understand how these factors contributed to the development of a cohesive identity across the empire’s vast and diverse territory. This paper will use examples from cities in the western regions of the empire, such as Pompeii and Mérida, to demonstrate how urbanization and the economic opportunities it brought forth helped create a sense of Romanness among diverse ethnic groups. It will also investigate the impact of building projects and intervention from wealthy elites in the fostering of a Roman identity through urbanization. This idea will then be tied into the role of Roman architecture and urban planning in the development of said identity, exemplified by the similarities and differences between settlements across the empire. At the same time, this paper will also consider the historical context in which these urban settlements emerged, examining how the broader geopolitical situation might have impacted urbanization. By analyzing the intersection between physical structures and economic opportunities brought about within Roman urban settlements, this paper hopes to shed light on the significance of urbanization as a driving force behind the formation of a shared Roman identity. This research will contribute to the broader understanding of cultural identity formation in ancient societies and the role of urbanization in shaping the collective consciousness of diverse populations.

Cultural Hybridity and Identity Formation in Globalized Societies

Purpose: The general purpose of the study was to explore cultural hybridity and identity formation in globalized societies. Methodology: The study adopted a desktop research methodology. Desk research refers to secondary data or that which can be collected without fieldwork. Desk research is basically involved in collecting data from existing resources hence it is often considered a low cost technique as compared to field research, as the main cost is involved in executive’s time, telephone charges and directories. Thus, the study relied on already published studies, reports and statistics. This secondary data was easily accessed through the online journals and library. Findings: The findings reveal that there exists a contextual and methodological gap relating to cultural hybridity and identity formation in globalized societies. Preliminary empirical review revealed that cultural hybridity was pervasive, with individuals blending diverse cultural influences to construct hybrid identities. Identity formation was dynamic and influenced by globalization, migration, and historical legacies. Power dynamics, including race and socio-economic status, intersected with cultural hybridity to shape experiences of identity and belonging. The study emphasized the importance of promoting inclusivity and dialogue to navigate the complexities of cultural hybridity and foster greater understanding across diverse cultural landscapes. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The Post- Colonial theory, Intersectionality theory and Transnationalism theory may be used to anchor future studies on cultural hybridity and identity formation in globalized societies. The study provided valuable insights and recommendations that contributed to theory, practice, and policy. It enriched theoretical frameworks by adopting a multidimensional approach to understanding identity formation and underscored the importance of recognizing cultural diversity. Educators, community organizations, and policymakers utilized the study's findings to develop inclusive practices and policies that promoted intercultural understanding, social cohesion, and equitable access to resources. Additionally, media practitioners incorporated the study's insights to produce content that challenged stereotypes and fostered positive representations of cultural diversity. Overall, the study's recommendations have had a significant impact on efforts to promote inclusive development and intercultural dialogue in globalized societies.

Supporting the mental health of young people from ethnically diverse groups during the transition from primary to secondary school

Background: The transition from primary to secondary school is a pivotal period in young people’s lives and can significantly impact their mental health. However, the experiences of young people from ethnically diverse groups during this crucial period of physical, social and emotional development are under-researched, limiting the evidence base for meaningful support. Objectives: This study explored the experiences of young people from ethnically diverse groups during primary-secondary school transition and co-designed ideas for culturally sensitive support. It explicitly focused on the intersection between ethnic and cultural identity, primary-secondary transition and mental health. Methods: The study employed participatory design to collaborate with seven young people from ethnically diverse groups and a peer researcher. Four online workshops mapped participant experiences and ideas concerning the primary-secondary transition, identity and mental health. These were developed into implications for practice, policy and research. Results: Participants highlighted feeling unprepared for the transition, with some experiencing poor mental health and difficulty navigating their ethnic and cultural identity during this time. Participants’ ideas for future transition experiences included: supporting a longer transition period, schools promoting diversity among students and staff, enabling education on ethnicity and culture, breaking stereotypes, enabling mutual learning among staff and students and enabling an open and caring environment to support mental health. Conclusions: The study provides an in-depth understanding of experiences of young people from ethnically diverse groups during primary-secondary transition and suggests ways of supporting multi-faceted transitions and mental health, with a key focus on ethnic and cultural identity formation.

Divided Selves in Exile: Third Space in Louis de Bernières’ Birds Without Wings

Set in the early 20th century, Louis de Bernieres’ novel Birds Without Wings focuses on the divided identities negatively influenced by wars, exile, and migration in southwestern Anatolia just before the decline of the Ottoman Empire and foundation of Republican Turkey. Based on the decision of population exchange, a great number of non-Muslim people were deported to a foreign land (Greece), away from the newly defined borders of the new Turkish Republic. In his novel Birds Without Wings, Louis de Bernières scrutinizes this social phenomenon and questions the significance and validity of the notions such as race, religion, ethnicity or language in the nation building process. The author deplores the loss of multicultural lifestyle in a utopian, idyllic Anatolian town with the displacement of Greek and Armenian residents. The multicultural structure of society penetrates into the formal and narrative features of the novel, such as multiplicities in viewpoints, a mixture of genres, different languages and the use of nicknames for protagonists. Intercultural encounter provokes hybridity and leads to the emergence of multiplicities in society. However, the exchange of population puts an end to the long-established multicultural society structure, a dynamic cultural exchange and negotiation. The use of multiple voices, multiple characters, narrative techniques, and multiple languages in fact celebrates the hybridity and plurality of worlds throughout the novel. Homi K. Bhabha’s concept of the in-between third space challenges the formation of cultural identity in hybrid societies, simultaneously embracing multiplicities, pluralities, and hybridity. The writer signals to the existence of such a harmonious heterogenous society in Anatolia in the past time and laments for the loss of such an idyllic lifestyle reigned by mutual love, respect, tolerance and cooperation. The purpose of this paper is to interrogate how Bhabha’s conceptualisation of “third space” finds a place in the lives of divided selves in Louis de Bernières’ Birds Without Wings and to demonstrate how it deconstructs the binary thought and essentialist identity in intercultural encounters.

The article presents the results of the author’s analytical research on the problems of women’s spirituality, its place in the consideration of the formation of cultural identity and originality of Russia. Significance of the material presented is determined by its relevance, consisting in the fact that the realities of the modern world lead to a rethinking of the attitude towards spirituality and traditional basic values of the country. The share of the population interested in the issues of morality, civic identity and especially spirituality is increasing. Proof of this statement is the words of the President of the Russian Federation, uttered at the Valdai Forum, a meeting with historians, in an address to the residents of Russia in February 2023, as well as Decree No. 809 of November 9, 2022 “On Approval of the Fundamentals of State Policy for the Preservation and Strengthening of Traditional Russian Spiritual and Moral Values”. The author attaches special importance to women's spirituality, arguing that it is women, for the most part, in our society who are the guardians of the basic values of their families. The analysis of the historical cross-section of the formation of the cultural identity of Russia is carried out, where the special role of traditional, family values is indicated, the interconnection of generations, the importance of the influence of knowledge about historical facts on the events of the future is shown, the justification of the importance of education and development of female spirituality in society is presented.

The education concept and its false dichotomies

Introduction: The conceptual complexity inherent in the term "education" has been associated with numerous analyses from various disciplinary approaches, paradigms, and theoretical currents. Objective: This article aims not to offer a univocal definition of the meaning of education but to consider it from a sociological perspective that integrates the false dichotomies of individual/society, continuity/discontinuity, and reproduction/change. Development: In the first part, the text presents a theoretical proposal on the articulation between culture, identity, and memory. Culture is understood as the set of objectified and subjectivized forms in historically specific contexts, which provides the individual with intersubjective elements for identity formation, where memory acts as an active dialogue between the psycho-individual and the socio-collective dimension. In the second part, education is proposed as a complex and dynamic process of cultural communication, identity formation, and social construction of memory. It emphasizes the importance of analyzing education from a theoretical perspective that considers the interaction between the individual and society, offering the possibility to understand its crucial role in processes of social reproduction and continuity, as well as in those of change and discontinuity. Conclusions: The mentioned false dichotomies in approaches to studying education polarize and create an antagonism between structures and subjects, individual and society, and reproduction and social change, consequently providing little understanding of how these phenomena articulate with educational processes, overlooking the multiple possibilities of co-participation and mutual determination.

The problem of cultural identity formation in the modern world. Theoretical aspects

The article is devoted to theoretical problems of cultural identity. It is emphasized, that culture forms an individual, contributes to his socialization on the basis of mastering the language, values, norms, customs and traditions of his people. In accordance with the classification generally accepted in historiography, there are about 20 historical and cultural regions in the world, including the Eastern European province. The article provides a brief analysis of the process of formation of the traditional culture of the Eastern European province of Russia, the main carriers of the culture of which are the indigenous peoples of the Russians, Finno-Ugric peoples (Karels, Komi, Mordovians, Udmurts, etc.), Turkic-speaking peoples (Tatars, Chuvashs, Bashkirs) and etc. Russian culture was formed in difficult geographical, climatic and geopolitical conditions. Traditional Russian culture in the process of formation has gone through all stages of evolutionary development. Under the influence of cultural interaction, process of transformation of local and ethnic culture into a national one took place.

Key findings indicate a marked increase in Korean language interest among Vietnamese youth, driven by media consumption. This engagement not only enhances language learning attitudes but also integrates Korean cultural elements into their daily lives, fostering community building around shared cultural interests. The study underscores the significance of non-Western media’s role in shaping global cultural and linguistic landscapes, highlighting Hallyu’s contribution to diversifying language education and cultural identity among global youth. This research provides valuable insights into the dynamics of media consumption, cultural globalization, and their implications for cultural identity and language learning.

Теоретико-методологические и текстологические аспекты изучения русской литературы и журналистики в начале ХХ века: проблемы и перспективы

The article provides an overview of the most relevant aspects of the study of forms of interaction and methodology for analyzing Russian literature and journalism in the pre-revolutionary era. Particular attention is paid to the interdisciplinary direction of research in Russian humanities and ways to overcome existing theoretical and methodological contradictions that arise when studying such a complex, dispersed, diffuse and multi-genre phenomenon as Russian periodicals at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries. Due to the specific nature of the research object itself, terminological “failures” are equally inevitable and methodological monism is impossible, and therefore the priority today seems to be a reasonable and balanced combination of traditional methods for academic science and new technologies in the field of digitalization of analyzed materials. It is necessary to develop approaches that are common to the intellectual history of the era as a point of convergence of interests in philology, journalism, philosophy, sociology and other related fields of knowledge. The significance of the discussed issues increases in the context of global cataclysms due to the growing attention to the role of the media in the formation of national and cultural identity, to their influence on radicalization or harmonization of the sociocultural situation, to their place in society’s adaptation to crisis phenomena and the ability to adequately respond to challenges time.

Exploring the Impact of Social Media on the Integration of Western Cultural Elements by University Students in China

This paper delves into the profound impact of social media on the cultural dynamics of Chinese university students, with a particular emphasis on how these digital landscapes mediate the integration, adaptation, and at times, resistance to Western cultural elements. As digital platforms become increasingly central to daily life, they not only serve as conduits for global cultural exchange but also as arenas where cultural identities are negotiated and redefined. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of popular social media platforms among Chinese youth, such as Weibo, WeChat, and Douyin, this study uncovers the complex interplay between global cultural flows and local traditions. It examines how these interactions influence the formation of identity, the evolution of values, and the adoption of social practices among the youth in China. The investigation reveals that while social media facilitates the exposure to and engagement with Western culture, Chinese university students approach these encounters with a critical eye, selectively adopting elements that resonate with their personal and cultural identity while resisting those that conflict with traditional values. This selective engagement highlights a dynamic process of cultural hybridization, where Western influences are not merely absorbed passively but are actively interpreted, modified, and integrated into the fabric of Chinese youth culture. The findings underscore the role of social media as a significant force in shaping contemporary cultural landscapes, offering insights into the broader implications of digital technology on cultural globalization and identity formation in the context of China’s rapidly changing society.

Toplumsal Cinsiyet Dinamiklerinin Açığa Çıkarılması: İran Sineması Üzerine Eleştirel Bir Analiz

The main purpose of this research is to examine the portrayal of gender in Iranian cinema and the subsequent effects on today ‘society, gender dynamics, and individual identity as a result of those impacts. The historical foundation of Iranian cinema, the key films in the industry, and the impact that political and cultural forces have played are all extensively discussed throughout study. Moreover, the paper delves into the portrayal of men and women in Iranian cinema, as well as the impact of the media on the formation of cultural standards and gender identities. It also analyzes the loosening of traditional gender standards, while calling attention to the predominance of destructive female characters in contemporary Iranian cinema and emphasizing the significance of sensitive male characters in that cinema. Furthermore, the study looks at how family connections are shown in Iranian films across time, as well as the delicate interplay of distinct sex, gender, and cultural features.
 As a result, women in Iranian cinema take on more prominent roles, but gender equality remains a challenge, and women continue to create meaningful films that resonate with audiences. The representation of masculinity in Iranian cinema is complex and varied, reflecting changing social and cultural norms in Iranian society. It is portrayed as heroic and honorable in some films, but violent and aggressive in others. This sparks a discussion about cinema’s role in shaping social norms and values, as well as the need for more diverse and nuanced portrayals of masculinity.

Promoting adolescents' cultural identity development: A pilot study of the identity project intervention in Italy.

This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of the Italian adaptation of the Identity Project (IP), a school-based intervention promoting cultural identity formation in adolescence. Participants were 138 adolescents (Mage = 15.66 years, SD = 0.84, 63% female, 37% of immigrant descent) from nine classrooms that were assigned to the intervention or control condition based on teachers' indications to ensure sustainability. The curriculum was delivered online due to COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions in spring 2021. Youth self-reported on their cultural identity exploration and resolution 1 week before and 1 week after the intervention. Feedback on the cultural appropriateness and salience of the program was gathered from students and teachers via online focus groups. The analysis of qualitative data supported the feasibility and acceptability of the culturally adapted IP, with students expressing appreciation for its interactive approach and the possibility to learn about their classmates' cultural origins. Analysis of quantitative data indicated that the program led to increases in cultural identity resolution, but not exploration. This pilot implementation confirms the importance of intervening in cultural identity development in multiethnic classrooms in Italy, although further work is necessary to better understand if nonsignificant findings for exploration were due to measurement issues introduced by the COVID-19 pandemic or if program modifications are necessary to stimulate adolescents' engagement in exploration processes. The relevance of the topic is determined by the rapid development of digital technologies and their impact on all spheres of human life. The current reality requires analysis and understanding of how these technologies change the perception of education, the formation of cultural environment and identity. The purpose of the research is to systematically study and analyze in depth the interaction of the information society with the spheres of education, culture and identity. The primary objective is to thoroughly identify and disclose the complex interrelationships arising from this interaction, in particular, the impact of information technologies on educational practices, the formation of cultural space, and the transformation of the individual. In addition, the research aims to reveal not only changes in the field of personal development under the influence of the information society but also to identify positive or negative trends that may arise as a result of these processes. The object of the research is the dynamics of transformations in the spheres of education, culture and identity arising in connection with the development of the information society. The obtained results of the research are of great practical importance for adapting to the challenges of the information society. It has been determined that educators and students need to establish digital capabilities since this can provide the basis for creative teaching methods. The key factors of cultural transformation are identified in the aspect of culture, which creates the basis for strategies aimed at preserving cultural heritage and developing new forms of cultural interaction. The impact of the information society on the development of personal identity is examined in terms of identity, and this research might provide a foundation for psychological support initiatives in the digital sphere.

Рpinciples of developing the russian cultural identity of university students in foreign language classes

Relevance. In the context of increasing geopolitical tensions in the world the development of Russian cultural identity of students in foreign language classes is of particular importance. Modern Russian society needs competent, creative and active specialists, whose training will not be relevant and sufficient without acquiring knowledge not only about the culture of the countries of the language being studied, but also about their own culture. In the current situation, a foreign language has priority importance as a means of intercultural communication and generalization of the spiritual heritage of the countries and peoples of the studied and native languages.The Research problem: what are the principles of development of Russian cultural identity that contribute to the formation of foreign language communicative competence? The purpose of the research is to substantiate the implementation of the principles of development of Russian cultural identity of technical university students in foreign language classes that contribute to the formation of foreign language communicative competence. The research methods used include pedagogical observation, study of psychological and pedagogical literature, retrospective analysis of teaching activities, assessment, study of the work experience of teachers of higher educational institutions. The results of the research are the following: the role of a foreign language in the formation of Russian cultural identity of students has been determined; principles for the development of Russian cultural identity of students in foreign language classes at a university have been formulated and examples of their implementation given. Key conclusions: the principles of ethnocultural orientation of teaching and the use of PR technologies in foreign language classes, the purpose of which is the development of the Russian cultural identity of students at a technical university, contribute to the formation of foreign language communicative competence.

This qualitative research delves into the cultural narratives encapsulated in language education under Pakistan’s Single National Curriculum (SNC). The study scrutinizes the integration and portrayal of cultural representation within the SNC by employing a methodological framework comprising document analysis and semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders such as curriculum developers, educators, and policy experts. It particularly focuses on the implications of these representations for students’ cultural awareness and identity formation. The findings unveil a pronounced emphasis on national narratives within the curriculum, which tends to eclipse the multifaceted local cultural identities and constrains exposure to broader global cultural perspectives. This predominant focus on national narratives significantly influences students’ perceptions and understanding of their cultural heritage, potentially leading to a constricted perception of Pakistani culture. The research highlights an essential need for a more equitable and inclusive integration of cultural narratives within the curriculum, accentuating the significance of harmonizing local and global cultural elements in educational content. Based on these insights, the study proposes several recommendations, including enhancing teacher training programs, involving diverse stakeholders in the curriculum development process, and a continuous and rigorous evaluation of how cultural narratives are represented and conveyed within the curriculum.

Successful development and the formation of a modern legal system in Ukraine should be based on the understanding of the value of human life, the importance of the full and harmonious development of each individual, ensuring human rights, and the necessity of creating conditions for the self-realization of human potential. This is possible only through the provision of gender equality. The study and reconsideration of the idea of gender equality through the example of the activities of Ukrainian women's movements in the conditions of emigration not only analyze the development of this idea in the past but also take into account the achievements of the past in understanding the ways and legal mechanisms for the real provision of gender equality in modern Ukrainian society. The article examines the role and contribution of Ukrainian women in the process of shaping the national worldview among the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada. The importance of the contribution of Ukrainian women in the diaspora to the formation of cultural and national identity helps to highlight their role in preserving and developing the Ukrainian heritage beyond the homeland and their influence on the activities of women's movements in Ukraine during the studied period. An integral part of the socio-political life in the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada became the women's movement, which initiated the creation of Ukrainian women's societies. Their task was not only to preserve national self-identification and culture but also the need to assist national institutions in Ukraine. The article also reveals important aspects of women's activities in public life, education, the cultural sphere, and the struggle for the rights of the Ukrainian community in Canada. It explores the instruments, methods, and strategies used by women to support their national identity and contribute to the formation of a Ukrainian national worldview among the immigrant community.

It makes a comparative analysis of two iconic films, The Godfather II and Mean Streets, through the lens of audiovisual language. Drawing upon the semiotics theory, mirror theory, and root theory, this research aims to analyze the dynamic changes in culture, economy, and emotions experienced by Italian immigrants. The study is anchored in three key aspects. First, it focuses on the identity politics of Italian immigrants in the United States, with a spotlight on second-generation immigrants. Unlike the first generation, they retain a strong sense of separation from their Italian roots, exhibiting few traces of a transitional identity arc.
