Assessment of Standard ChrysanthemumGenotypes for Morphological and Floral Attributes in Terai Region of West Bengal, India

Aims: Chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev) is one of the most economically important and economically favoured floricultural crops used as cut flower, loose flower, potted plants, bedding and border plants, making garlands, flower decoration, bracelet, venis and religious offerings. The present study aimed to evaluate and select suitable large flowering chrysanthemum cultivars for commercial cultivation in Terai region of West Bengal. Location of the Study: The experiment was conducted in the Instructional Farm, Department of Floriculture, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Faculty of Horticulture, Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya during the period of September to February of 2022-23 and 2023-24. Materials: Thirty five different cultivars of large flowering chrysanthemum were evaluated based on their growth and flowering parameters viz. Angel Bell, Autumn Blaze, Autumn Day Light, Bolare Deo, Cassa Granda Yellow, Chengis Khan, Coronation Gold, Cossak, Diamond Jubilee, Dignity, Dream Castle, Golden Yellow, Green Goddess, Innocence, J.S.Loyed, Jane Sharp, Jessie Hab Good, Kasturba Gandhi, Kenroken Pink, Kenroken White, Kikubiory, Lady Frank Klerk, Phil Houghton, Pink Cloud, Pinkling, Raja, Red Wine, Royal Prince, Royal Purple, Silk Brocade, Snowball, Sonar Bangla, Temptation, Willium Turner and Yellow Reonet. Methodology: One month old rooted cuttings were planted at a spacing of 40 cm X 30cm (Row to row 40cm and plant to plant 30cm) in 1.6m X 1.2 m raised bed. Total 16 plants were planted in one plot. Statistical Design: The experiment was laid out in completely randomized block design replicated thrice. Collected data was analyzed by one-way analysis of variance with the help of SPSS software. Results: Significant variation was observed among the genotypes. Maximum plant spread (N-S) of 36.33±5.90, 39.00±1.55 and 37.67±4.13 cm was observed in Snowball in the year 2022-23, 2023-24 and pooled respectively whereas minimum plant spread (N-S) of 16.42±1.73 cm was observed in Cassa Granda Yellow. The maximum number of flowers per bed 282.74, 291.34 and 287.04 was recorded in Pinkling during the first year, second year, and pooled data, respectively, while the minimum number of flowers per bed (140.60 and 149.55) was observed in Autumn Blaze during the first year pooled data, respectively while in second year Pink Cloud (145.40) recorded the minimum numbers of flowers per bed. Conclusion: From the study, it may be recommended that the cultivars like Snowball, Sonar Bangla, Pinkling, Temptation are suitable for cut flowers. The cultivars namely Silk Brocade, Pink Cloud, Diamond Jubilee, Corronation Gold, Innocence, Kenroken White and Kenroken Pink may be selected for pot plants and for garden display due to profuse uniform branching and blooming.

Amplifying synthesis of health-promoting metabolites in tomatoes via stimulation with encapsulated biological and chemical agents in hydroponic and soil cultivation

Tomatoes are often considered the most consumed vegetable worldwide. More importantly, they serve as a rich source of valuable compounds such as carotenoids, phenolic acids, and flavonoids, which play an important role in health and disease prevention. The main focus of this work was the stimulation of the synthesis of these compounds. This research examined the impact of encapsulated calcium and copper ions, with and without the biological agent Trichoderma viride, on plant metabolites synthesis of two tomato cultivars ('Clarabella' and 'Alamina') in hydroponic and soil cultivation. This included determining total carotenoids, total polyphenolic content, and total flavonoid content, as well as antioxidant activity and their correlations. The research highlighted the role of alginate-encapsulated ions and the significant enhancement of carotenoid synthesis by the presence of T. viride. Microsphere treatments increased carotenoid content by up to 100.46% and 123.83%, respectively. Furthermore, calcium-based microsphere treatments consistently improved polyphenolic and flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity. The principal component analysis revealed two main components that explain 81.73% of the total variance in the data, confirming and highlighting distinct patterns. The presented results are vital to advance agricultural practices and to improve the nutritional value of tomatoes. These findings suggest that the selected treatments not only improve carotenoid synthesis but also improve the polyphenolic and flavonoid content and antioxidant potential of tomatoes, contributing to both the health benefits and agricultural sustainability.

An Evaluation of Antimicrobial Activity of Common Zingiber officinale Cultivars Grown in Sri Lanka

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has long been a therapeutic agent in traditional medicine systems worldwide and is a leading drug candidate in the pharmaceutical industry. In Sri Lanka, many forms of ginger are often used in the food industry, mainly as a spice; it also plays a vital role in the Ayurvedic medicine system. This study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of the two most cultivated cultivars of Zingiber officinale in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan (TG) and Chinese (CG) cultivars. Two types of extracts (ethanol and aqueous) were obtained from the rhizomes of each cultivar. The potential antimicrobial activity of the extracts was tested against three types of pathogenic test organisms, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Salmonella typhi DSM 17058, and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, using the agar well diffusion method along with positive control, chloramphenicol, and negative controls, 95% ethanol or distilled water. In conclusion, both Zingiber officinale cultivars exhibit varying antimicrobial potential, with ethanol extracts showing stronger activity than aqueous ones. None of the extracts was effective against Escherichia coli. The agar dilution method determined the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of each ginger extract. Among the extracts, ethanol extracts showed higher effectivity than aqueous extracts, where all test organisms showed inhibition at a concentration of 20 mg/mL. The antimicrobial activity of the Chinese cultivar outperforms the Sri Lankan cultivar against target organisms, Salmonella typhi, and Staphylococcus aureus.

Integrated anatomical structure, physiological, and transcriptomic analyses to identify differential cold tolerance responses of Ziziphus jujuba mill. ‘Yueguang’ and its autotetraploid ‘Hongguang’

Cold stress is a limiting stress factor that limits plant distribution and development; however, polyploid plants have specific characteristics such as higher resistance to abiotic stress, especially cold stress, that allow them to overcome this challenge. The cultivated cultivar Ziziphus jujuba Mill. ‘Yueguang’ (YG) and its autotetraploid counterpart ‘Hongguang’ (HG) exhibit differential cold tolerance. However, the underlying molecular mechanism and methods to enhance their cold tolerance remain unknown. Anatomical structure and physiological analysis indicated YG had a higher wood bark ratio, and xylem ratio under cold treatment compared to HG. However, the half-lethal temperature (LT50), cortex ratio, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were significantly decreased in YG than HG, which indicated YG was cold tolerant than HG. Transcriptome analysis showed that 2084, 1725, 2888, and 2934 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in HC vs YC, H20 vs Y20, Y20 vs YC, and H20 vs HC treatment, respectively. Meanwhile, KEGG enrichment analysis of DEGs showed that several metabolic pathways, primarily plant hormone signal transduction and the MAPK signaling pathway, were involved in the differential regulation of cold tolerance between YG and HG. Furthermore, exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) and brassinolide (BR) treatments could improve their cold tolerance through increased SOD and POD activities, decreased relative electrical conductivity, and MDA content. All of these findings suggested that plant hormone signal transduction, particularly ABA and BR, might have an important role in the regulation of differential cold tolerance between YG and HG, laying the foundation for further improving cold tolerance in jujube and examining the molecular mechanisms underlying differences in cold tolerance among different ploidy cultivars.

Screening for Heat and Rain Tolerant Cultivars of Cauliflower for Cultivation in Monsoon Season in the Subtropical Region of Bhutan

There is a shortage of cauliflower in the domestic market during monsoon and early autumn seasons in Bhutan due to the absence of suitable cultivars for cultivation in subtropical region during these seasons. This study was conducted to assess the genotypic variability in yield of different cultivars of cauliflower under heat and rain (flood) stresses in the subtropical region. Four F1 hybrid varieties of cauliflower from the Takii Seeds, Japan (KSB-12.179, KSB-12.180, KSB-18.297 and KSB-20.320) and three F1 hybrid varieties from Syngenta Seeds, India (C-6099, CFL-1522 and Monsoon Queen) were evaluated in August 2022 in open field at ARDC Samtenling. The experiment was laid out in a RCDB design with three replications using Snow Mystique as the check variety. The objective of the study was to identify short duration, rain and heat tolerant varieties of cauliflower for cultivation in the monsoon season (July-August) in the subtropical region of Bhutan. In addition, all the cultivars were further assessed in September, and five cultivars that performed well in monsoon planting were evaluated in November 2022 as the second and third staggered planting trials to find out their performance in late monsoon and main seasons (September-November) respectively. The results from three staggered trials showed that Monsoon Queen matured in 53 days after transplanting (DAT), 56 DAT and 35 DAT in the first, second and third staggered planting trials with the mean head of 462 g, 376 g and 211 g respectively. In comparison, the check variety matured in 142 DAT, 114 DAT and 77 DAT in the first, second and third staggered planting trials with the mean head of 658 g, 403 g and 767 g, respectively. Monsoon Queen was the earliest maturing variety with good head weight and curd quality among the eight cauliflower varieties when transplanted in August 2022. However, both the head yield and curd quality of this cultivar declined in later plantings, indicating that this variety is not suitable for main season (autumn) planting. With the identification of Monsoon Queen as the heat and rain tolerant cultivar in this study, cauliflower can now be grown even in the monsoon season in the subtropical region of Bhutan.

Hemp cultivation opportunities for marginal lands development.

Agricultural diversification and high-quality products deriving from sustainable crops such as hemp can represent a solution to revitalize marginal areas and reverse land abandonment. This study aimed at comparing four different hemp cultivars (Carmagnola Selezionata, "CS"; Futura 75, "FUT"; Felina 32, "FEL"; Secuieni Jubileu, "JUB") to provide information to select the best suited cultivar for cultivation in mountain marginal areas and for specific end-use applications. Hemp cultivars were cultivated in a single experimental field to compare their ecological and agronomic behavior (duration of life cycle phases, plant size and biomass allocation, and plant resource-use strategies). Through metabolomic analysis of both vegetative and reproductive parts of the plants we tested the presence of substances of nutraceutical interest and traced seed nutritional profile. The four cultivars had different ecological and agronomic behavior, and nutritional profile. We found several compounds with potential pharmaceutical and nutraceutical values in all parts of the plant (leaves, inflorescences, and stems). JUB resulted the most suitable for seed production while CS showed the highest content of bioactive compounds in flowers and leaves. FUT, showed the best suitability for multi-purpose cultivation, while FEL seemed to be not appropriate for the cultivation in mountain area. The multi-disciplinary approach we adopted was effective in distinguish across hemp cultivars and provided information to farmers for the selection of the best hemp cultivar to select. Hemp had a high potential for cultivation in marginal lands, demonstrating to be an economic resource due to its multi-purpose use and to the possibility to generate high-added values products. Our results could serve as a stimulus for the reintroduction of this culture in the study area and in other similar environments.

Own-rooted Walnut Propagule of Four Walnut (Juglans) Rootstocks and Main Cultivated Cultivar Liaoning 1 Acquirement through Layering under Field Conditions

Walnut, a woody plant, is regarded as having difficulty rooting when propagated by vegetative methods, such as cutting and layering. A layering experiment was conducted in 2018 and 2022. In 2018, some Juglans species, including J. regia L. seedling (JR), J. regia cv. Liaoning 1 (JR LN1), J. hopeinesis Hu seedling (JH), J. mandshurica Maxim seedling (JM), and J. nigra L. seedling (JN), were the mother plants. The specific research hypotheses were that own-rooted walnut propagule could be obtained through layering. the rooting capacity of different Juglans species would be different, and the rooting ability of JN would be the highest among the samplings. The results indicated that all of these species in the experiment could be rooted by etiolation and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) treatment and that root occurrence was found 6 to 7 weeks after IBA treatment. The layers (shoots from the mother plant) on the seedlings of JR, JH, and JM obtained rooting percentages (RP) of 75.55%, 84.45%, and 86.67%, respectively, and root numbers (RNs) of 21.8, 42.8, and 38.8, respectively, after 20 days of etiolation and 1% IBA treatment. JR LN1 had difficulty rooting in equal conditions and had a RP of 31.11%. In 2022, JR LN1 was the only mother plant and the IBA concentration was increased to obtain satisfactory RP and RN. With the 4% and 8% IBA treatments, RPs of 88.9% and 93.3% and RNs of 40.3 and 27.7, respectively, were achieved. During the experiment, the RP, RN, root length (RL), and root diameter (RD), as well as the layer height (LH) and layer diameter (LD), were investigated and evaluated. Layers with low vigor were more likely to root, as shown by a nonparametric test conducted for the height and diameter of the layers of the rooting and nonrooting groups. A significantly negative correlation (r = −0.548) was observed between RN and LH. Moreover, the quality of the best results of JR LN1 layering propagule and that with ‘liaoning 1’ 1-year-old seedling were compared. Our results provide more support for the possibility of vegetative propagation of walnut by layering and more information regarding the clonal cultivation of walnut trees and the own-rooted seedling establishment of walnut cultivars.

Testing of potato cultivars in the Tirana region conditions

The potato is a very important crop in Albania and the cultivation of new cultivars with high productivity and better quality is very significant. This study was conducted to test some imported cultivars of potato and explore some features in their characterization and evaluation, with the aim of increasing interest in those that are the best for Albanian farmers, as well as for other studies. Thirteen potato cultivars of foreign origin were tested in a field trial for their morphological and agronomical characteristics under the climatic conditions of the Tirana region. It was found that among the potato cultivars studied there is a significant variation, both in the characterization traits (qualitative traits) and in the evaluation traits (quantitative traits). Drawing on the conclusions reached, we recommend the most suitable cultivars for cultivation in this region.

Assessment of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield and quality under organic farming in the southwest of Romania

Taking into account the rising demand for organic wheat and the need to guarantee both high productivity and quality of the crops, the choice of cultivar plays a crucial role. These intended objectives may solely be attained by employing the most appropriate cultivars for organic agriculture. The aim of this study was to evaluate the suitability of 15 wheat cultivars for cultivation in organic farming according to three important parameters for organic farmers and processors, namely grain yield, test weight and protein content. The field experiment took place over two consecutive growing seasons, in the center of the Oltenia region (southwest of Romania) under organic farming conditions. The results showed significant effects of the climatic conditions in the year of study, but also of the cultivar on all studied parameters. The effect of genotype-environment interactions was significant only for test weight and protein content. On average, over the two years of study, the grain yield was 3899 kg ha-1, the test weight was 70.8 kg hl-1, and the protein content was 10.1%. The recently released cultivar ‘Voinic’ obtained the maximum grain yield (4755 kg ha-1) and also a maximum test weight and protein content (73.9 kg hl-1, respectively 10.7%). In conclusion, it follows that by using cultivars suitable for organic farming, good and quality yields can be obtained that can be a suitable raw material for baking industry.

Importance of mega-environments in evaluation and identification of climate resilient maize hybrids (Zea mays L.)

Multi-location experiments on maize were conducted from 2016 to 2019 at ten locations distributed across two agro-climatic zones (ACZ) i.e., ACZ-3 and ACZ-8 of Karnataka, India. Individual analysis of variance for each location-year combination showed significant differences among the hybrids; similarly, combined analysis showed a higher proportion of GE interaction variance than due to genotype. Mega-environments were identified using biplot approaches such as AMMI, GGE, and WAASB methodologies for the years 2016 to 2019. The BLUP method revealed a high correlation between grain yield and stability indices ranging from 0.67 to 1.0. Considering all three methods together, the three location pairs Arabhavi-Belavatagi, Bailhongal-Belavatagi, and Hagari-Sirguppa had three occurrences in the same mega-environment with a value of 0.67, and these location combinations consistently produced winning genotypes. Among the common winning genotypes identified, it was G7 during 2016 and 2017 and G10 during 2018 and 2019, based on WAASBY. The likelihood of Arabhavi-Nippani, Hagari-Mudhol, and Dharwad-Hagari occurring in the same mega-environment is minimal because they did not share the same winning genotype, with the exception of a small number of events. Despite being in the same agro-climatic zone, Arabhavi, Hagari, and Mudhol rarely had a winning genotype in common. An agro-climatic zone is grouped based on climatic and soil conditions which doesn’t consider GE interaction of cultivars thus, releasing the cultivars for commercial cultivation considering mega environments pattern would enhance the yield for the given target region.

Modification of agricultural traits in cultivated varieties of barley and wheat

CRISPR/Cas technology makes it possible to induce mutations at defined positions. In breeding-oriented research, this opens up exciting opportunities for the targeted improvement of many agricultural crops. Wheat and barley are among the most important cereals in the world. However, the transformation poses a particular challenge for cereals and is strongly genotype dependent. This is because agrobacteria, which is mostly used for delivering the CRISPR/Cas system, have a limited compatibility with these non-host plants. Transformation of wheat is additionally difficult due to the large genome size and polyploidy.
 Besides obtaining improved genotypes, the object of the current study was to optimize the method of genomic editing based on the CRISPR/Cas system using particle bombardment for non-model varieties of barley and wheat. In barley, we targeted theNudgene that controls hulled/naked phenotype of the grain. Since the regeneration rate remains an issue for the cultivated cultivars, we used the JD633 vector that carries theGRF4-GIF1chimera to increase the efficiency of regeneration. We obtained five T0plants, carrying mutations. In wheat, targetingPpd-1genes that control photoperiod-dependent floral induction results in Cas9-induced mutations in 52 of 210 T0plants. The developed collection of wheat plants with different new alleles ofPpd-D1andPpd-B1genes is being studied for the expression under short day conditions and the effect on the vegetation period.
 Thus, we have obtained plants of the cultivated varieties of barley and wheat with edited agronomically important genes, using the improved protocols of biolistic transformation.

Advances and Prospects of Virus-Resistant Breeding in Tomatoes.

Plant viruses are the main pathogens which cause significant quality and yield losses in tomato crops. The important viruses that infect tomatoes worldwide belong to five genera: Begomovirus, Orthotospovirus, Tobamovirus, Potyvirus, and Crinivirus. Tomato resistance genes against viruses, including Ty gene resistance against begomoviruses, Sw gene resistance against orthotospoviruses, Tm gene resistance against tobamoviruses, and Pot 1 gene resistance against potyviruses, have been identified from wild germplasm and introduced into cultivated cultivars via hybrid breeding. However, these resistance genes mainly exhibit qualitative resistance mediated by single genes, which cannot protect against virus mutations, recombination, mixed-infection, or emerging viruses, thus posing a great challenge to tomato antiviral breeding. Based on the epidemic characteristics of tomato viruses, we propose that future studies on tomato virus resistance breeding should focus on rapidly, safely, and efficiently creating broad-spectrum germplasm materials resistant to multiple viruses. Accordingly, we summarized and analyzed the advantages and characteristics of the three tomato antiviral breeding strategies, including marker-assisted selection (MAS)-based hybrid breeding, RNA interference (RNAi)-based transgenic breeding, and CRISPR/Cas-based gene editing. Finally, we highlighted the challenges and provided suggestions for improving tomato antiviral breeding in the future using the three breeding strategies.

Identification of water stress-tolerant edible pumpkin seed (Cucurbita pepo) genotypes using seed yield-based tolerance indices

Pumpkin is usually cultivated in arid and semiarid regions, and the lack of water stress-tolerant cultivars is a major limiting factor. Therefore, this study was carried out to identify superior water stress-tolerant genotypes. For this purpose, 44 inbred lines with superior agronomic traits were selected from the gene pool. In addition, two hybrids (G1-Mert Bey F1 and G2-Sena Hanim F1) and two landraces (G3-Hatun Tırnağı and G4-Cercevelik) with high commercial value were used as commercial cultivars. The water stress indices were calculated from seed yields from the pumpkin genotypes grown in irrigated and water stress conditions in 2017 and 2018. The stress tolerance index (STI) determines tolerant and superior genotypes. From the principal component and cluster analyses’ findings, G9, G40, G32, G36, G5, G11, G22, G30, G37, and G13 showed the highest water stress tolerance among the inbred lines. During future breeding experiments, these inbred lines may have significant potential for developing novel water stress-tolerant cultivars for pumpkin cultivation in semiarid regions.

Integrating data from asymmetric multi-models can identify drought-resistant groundnut genotypes for drought hot-spot locations

Water/drought stress experiments are frequently conducted under imposed stress or rainout shelters, while natural drought hot-spot investigations are rare. The “drought hot spot” in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, India, is appropriate for drought stress evaluation due to its hot, arid environment, limited rainfall, with over 50% rainfall variability. According to reports, 30 out of 200 groundnut cultivars in India are supposed to possess drought-tolerant characteristics. However, these cultivars are yet to be evaluated in areas that are prone to drought. This study tested these drought-tolerant genotypes in naturally drought-prone areas of Anantapur under rainfed conditions from Kharif 2017 to 2019. Pod yield and rainfall-use-efficiency (RUE) were measured for these genotypes. Genotype and genotype*environment interactions affected pod yield and RUE (GEI). The AMMI model exhibits significant season-to-season variability within the same area with environmental vectors > 90° angles. GGE biplot suggested the 2018 wet season for drought-resistant cultivar identification. Kadiri5 and GPBD5 were the most drought-tolerant cultivars for cultivation in Anantapur and adjacent regions. These types could also be used to generate drought-tolerant groundnut variants for drought-prone regions.

Root Growth and Defense Response of Seedlings against Fusarium oxysporum in Sand Culture and In Vitro—A Comparison of Two Screening Approaches for Asparagus Cultivars

Two rapid asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) screening methods, in sand culture and in vitro, were tested to evaluate the response of young seedlings against F. oxysporum f. sp. asparagi (isolate Foa1). Root morphological parameters were evaluated and correlated with the symptomatology and expression of the defense-related genes at 5 and 7 dpi. In sand cultivation, the Foa1-inoculated cultivars showed no visible disease symptoms on their roots until 7 dpi. Two-factorial ANOVA statistics found no significant interaction between the cultivars and treatments for most root parameters but some differences between the cultivars. The in vitro Foa1-inoculated cultivars showed high susceptibility according to their symptomatology and differed greatly in the length of the primary root at 5 dpi. In some cultivars, the primary root length and root surface area were higher upon Foa1 inoculation. The expression changes were very different among the cultivars, with significant induction of PR1, POX, and PAL at 5 dpi in all cultivars in vitro but only in two cultivars in sand cultivation. The in vitro screening method, although more artificial, seemed to be more reliable than sand cultivation since the fungus was able to develop well in the culture medium. In sand-filled pots, the fungus may have been hindered in its development, even though a considerable higher amount of Foa1 was inoculated. In addition, the fungal growth was easily trackable in tubes, while in sand cultivation, the results were only visible after pulling the seedlings out of the pots 12 dpi.

Feeding Behavior Comparison of Bean Bugs, Riptortus pedestris and Halyomorpha halys on Different Soybean Cultivars

Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) and Halyomorpha halys (Stål) are the major pests that feed on soybean pods, seeds, and fruits. Higher populations and damage occur during the soybean maturity stages (podding to harvest). To compare the feeding behavior of R. pedestris and H. halys, we used the six most cultivated cultivars (Daepung-2ho, Daechan, Pungsannamul, Daewon, Seonpung, and Seoritae) in Korea using the electropenetrography (EPG) technique. Both R. pedestris and H. halys, the NP (non-penetration), a non-probing waveform, was the shortest in the Pungsannamul (298 and 268 min) and the longest in the Daepung-2ho (334 and 339 min), respectively. The feeding waveforms Pb (phloem feeding: E1-Salivation and E2-Sap feeding) and G (xylem feeding) were the longest in Pungsannamul and the shortest in Daepung-2ho. In addition, as a result of investigating the damage rate by planting six cultivars of beans in the field, as expected, the proportions of damage types B and C were highest in Pungsannamul and lowest in Daepung-2ho. These results reveal that both bug species ingest xylem sap from leaflets and stems using a salivary sheath strategy to acquire water and nutrients from soybean pods/seeds with cell-rupture tactics. This study provides perceptive information to understand the feeding behavior, field occurrence, and damage patterns of R. pedestris and H. halys, which may have key implications for the management of hemipteran pests by determining the specificity and susceptibility of host plants.

Quality of strawberries of Italian origin grown in the mountainous region of Rio Grande do Sul

Studies that evaluate the quality of the strawberry fruit, depending on the different genetic materials and places of cultivation, are still scarce in Brazil. The objective of this work was to evaluate the quality of fruits of advanced genotypes of strawberry with Italian genetics, in the municipality of Farroupilha, belonging to the Serrana region of Rio Grande do Sul. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with four replications and 10 plants per plot, in two production cycles, containing 21 treatments in the 2018/2019 cycle and 23 treatments in the 2019/2020 cycle. The variables were quantified: fresh mass of commercial fruits (g fruit-1); luminosity and chroma of the epidermis; hue angle; pulp firmness (g); titratable acidity content (g 100g-1 of citric acid); soluble solids content (°Brix) and soluble solids/titratable acidity ratio (SS/AT). Among the genotypes evaluated, the genotypes FRF PIR 075.08, ITA 10.128.09, and FRF FC 104.01, have superior fruit quality, showing greater potential to become recommended cultivars for cultivation in the Serrana region of Rio Grande do Sul, together with the cultivar pircinque.

Evaluation of Pecan [Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch] Cultivars for Possible Cultivation for Both Fruit and Truffle Production in the Puglia Region, Southeastern Italy

Yield and different nut parameters were measured for two growing seasons on mature (28–29 years) trees of 11 pecan cultivars grown in an experimental orchard located in the Puglia Region, Southeastern Italy. ‘Shoshoni’ and ‘Shawnee’ pecan seedlings were inoculated with three truffle species (Tuber borchii—known as the ‘whitish truffle’, T. aestivum—called the ‘summer truffle’, and T. melanosporum—the common ‘Black truffle’) and investigated for six months. The level of ectomycorrhizal colonization was assessed 6 and 12 months after inoculation. Results indicated that ‘Wichita’, ‘Shoshoni’, and ‘Pawnee’ performed well in the pedoclimatic conditions of the area with a yield higher than 20 kg/tree and a kernel dry weight of ≅3 g. These preliminary yield results suggested that some pecan cultivars could deserve consideration for cultivation in the Puglia Region, whereas others with low yield and a stronger alternate bearing should not be considered. Plant height, number of leaves, chlorophyll content (expressed as a SPAD unit) and stem diameter partially indicated the increase in ecological fitness in truffles-inoculated plants. Successful mycorrhization indicated ‘Shoshoni’ and ‘Shawnee’ as suitable to establish ectomycorrhizal symbiosis with T. aestivum, T. borchii, and T. melanosporum cultivation under Puglia climatic conditions. The results also showed that the applied protocol was adequate to obtain healthy mycorrhized seedlings appropriate for commercialization and plantation for truffles production on pecan in the future.

Phytochemical Composition of the Fruit of Large Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton) Cultivars Grown in the Collection of the National Botanic Garden of Latvia

In this study, we conducted a qualitative and quantitative analysis of anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, flavonols and triterpenoids in samples of introduced and bred large cranberry fruits from the collection of the National Botanic Garden of Latvia. The highest total anthocyanin levels (8638-9316 µg/g) were detected in the fruit samples of the cranberry cultivars 'Black Veil', 'Franclin' and 'Early Black'. The highest total proanthocyanidin levels (2775-3389 µg/g) were found in cranberries of cultivars 'Kalnciema Agrā', 'Kalnciema Tumšā', 'Searles', 'Howes', and 'Kalnciema Ražīgā'. The highest levels of flavonol compounds (1373-1402 µg/g) were detected in cranberries of cultivars 'Howes', 'Black Veil' and 'Salaspils Melnās'. The highest levels of triterpenoids (5292-5792 µg/g) were determined in cranberries of cultivars 'Kalnciema Agrā', 'Septembra', 'Džbrūklene' and 'Early Black'. The results of our study allow for the estimation of differences in the content of secondary metabolites in the fruit samples of the studied cranberry cultivars and for the selection of promising cultivars for further introduction and cultivation in the climatic conditions of the Baltic countries. These results are also important for the selection of the most promising cranberry cultivars for the preparation of cranberry raw material, and the high-quality composition of plant material ensures the effectiveness of cranberry supplements and other cranberry preparations.
