Enhanced Spontaneous Emission through High‐k Modes in CsPbBr3 Perovskite Hyperbolic Metamaterials

AbstractNovel optical sources require fast decay rates, making hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) an increasingly attractive option. HMMs are well‐known for their remarkable anisotropy, and leverage hyperbolic dispersion to enhance the decay rate of a fluorophore placed on top of them. This study tackles the complex task of embedding a fluorophore into an HMM, successfully overcoming challenges related to surface roughness, thickness imperfections, and layer washing effects. Specifically, CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs)‐based HMM are fabricated, by alternating silver/nanocrystals (Ag/NCs) layers. Through a systematic investigation of the photophysical response following the deposition of each bilayer, compelling evidence of the achievement of hyperbolic dispersion is provided. Specifically, the impact of “high‐k” modes is isolated, which is distinctive to the HMM architecture. Therefore, the longstanding debate regarding the number of bilayers needed to achieve hyperbolic dispersion is conclusively resolved. The research demonstrates a nearly twofold increase in the decay rate and a threefold enhancement in photoluminescence intensity. These findings are further supported by theoretical Purcell factor calculations. This study marks a pioneering advancement in the field of bulk dye‐embedded HMMs, laying the groundwork for the development of advanced optical sources such as “resonant gain HMMs”.

Spin polarization in Fe-doped CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals for enhancing photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Spin manipulation offers an effective strategy to enhance photocatalytic activity in metal halide perovskites by suppressing the recombination of photo-excited electrons. However, the scope of the magnetic dopant inducing spin polarization is still limited. Here, we introduce synergetic strategies to polarize the spin in photo-excited electrons and boost their photocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction. We dope iron cation (Fe2+) into CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs). Fe ions induce paramagnetism, fostering spin polarization within the Fe-doped CsPbBr3 PNCs (Fe-CsPbBr3 PNCs) under magnetic fields. The magnetic compositions in PNC tend to stabilize the spin polarized electrons within the PNC, mitigate the recombination of photo-excited electrons and enhance the redox reaction for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The synergistic effects of magnetic element doping and the application of magnetic fields resulted in a photocatalytic CO2 reduction of 133.04 g−1, which is 1.68-fold increase compared to the Fe-PNC without a magnetic field. This work provides a simple and environmentally friendly approach to CO2 reduction based on PNCs.

Dynamical self-rectifying memristors based on halide perovskite nanocrystals

The integration of rectifying effects with resistance switching in a self-rectifying memristor offers the opportunity to suppress the sneak current in high-density crossbar arrays for energy-efficient neuromorphic computing. Here, we report a new type of two-terminal self-rectifying memristor that gets rid of asymmetric complex structures by using CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs). The simple metal-insulator-metal (Au/CsPbBr3 NCs/Au) configuration that eases integration exhibits multiple resistance states that can be precisely controlled by the stimulus properties and dynamical rectifying characteristics dependent on both the bias voltage and bias time. We have extended an earlier proposed theory that predicts electric-potential-distribution-controlled rectification to rationalize all the observed rectifying behavior that are regulated by mobile-ion-induced interfacial electrochemical reactions and found excellent agreement between theory and experiments. Our study thus demonstrates the possibility of constructing controllable self-rectifying memristors without involving asymmetric complex structures, paving a new way for resolving the sneak current issue in crossbar arrays of memristors.

Engineering Metal Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals with BODIPY Dyes for Photosensitization and Photocatalytic Applications.

The sensitization of surface-anchored organic dyes on semiconductor nanocrystals through energy transfer mechanisms has received increasing attention owing to their potential applications in photodynamic therapy, photocatalysis, and photon upconversion. Here, we investigate the sensitization mechanisms through visible-light excitation of two nanohybrids based on CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (NC) functionalized with borondipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes, specifically 8-(4-carboxyphenyl)-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BDP) and 8-(4-carboxyphenyl)-2,6-diiodo-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (I2-BDP), named as NC@BDP and NC@I2-BDP, respectively. The ability of I2-BDP dyes to extract hot hole carriers from the perovskite nanocrystals is comprehensively investigated by combining steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence as well as femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy with spectroelectrochemistry and quantum chemical theoretical calculations, which together provide a complete overview of the phenomena that take place in the nanohybrid. Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) dominates (82%) the photosensitization of the singlet excited state of BDP in the NC@BDP nanohybrid with a rate constant of 3.8 ± 0.2 × 1010 s-1, while charge transfer (64%) mediated by an ultrafast charge transfer rate constant of 1.00 ± 0.08 × 1012 s-1 from hot states and hole transfer from the band edge is found to be mainly responsible for the photosensitization of the triplet excited state of I2-BDP in the NC@I2-BDP nanohybrid. These findings suggest that the NC@I2-BDP nanohybrid is a unique energy transfer photocatalyst for oxidizing α-terpinene to ascaridole through singlet oxygen formation.

Highly luminescent and stable CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals coated with polyethersulfone for white light-emitting diode applications.

Simultaneously improving the stability and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of all inorganic perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) is crucial for their practical utilization in various optoelectronic devices. Here, CsPbBr3 NCs coated with polyethersulfone (PES) were prepared via an in-situ co-precipitation method. The sulfone groups in PES bind to undercoordinated lead ion (Pb2+) on the CsPbBr3 NCs, resulting in significant reduction of surface defects, thus enhancing the PLQY from 74.2% to 88.3%. Meanwhile, the PES-coated NCs exhibit high water resistance and excellent heat and light stability, maintaining over 85% of the initial PL intensity under thermal aging (70°C, 4h) and continuous 365 nm ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation (24 W, 8h) conditions. By contrast, the PL intensity of the control NCs dramatically dropped to less than 40%. Finally, a diode emitting bright white light was fabricated utilizing the PES-coated CsPbBr3 NCs, which exhibits a color gamut of ~110% NTSC standard.

The Electronic Impact of Light-Induced Degradation in CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals at Gold Interfaces.

The understanding of the interfacial properties in perovskite devices under irradiation is crucial for their engineering. In this study we show how the electronic structure of the interface between CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) and Au is affected by irradiation of X-rays, near-infrared (NIR), and ultraviolet (UV) light. The effects of X-ray and light exposure could be differentiated by employing low-dose X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Apart from the common degradation product of metallic lead (Pb0), a new intermediate component (Pbint) was identified in the Pb 4f XPS spectra after exposure to high intensity X-rays or UV light. The Pbint component is determined to be monolayer metallic Pb on-top of the Au substrate from underpotential deposition (UPD) of Pb induced from the breaking of the perovskite structure allowing for migration of Pb2+.

Tailoring Charge Donor–Acceptor Interaction in CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals through Ligand Exchange

The surface ligands in colloidal metal halide perovskites influence not only their intrinsic optoelectronic properties but also their interaction with other materials and molecules. Donor–acceptor interactions of CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals with TiO2 nanoparticles and nanotubes are explored by replacing long‐chain oleylamine ligands with short‐chain butylamines. Through postsynthesis ligand exchange, the nanocrystals are functionalized with butylamine ligands while their intrinsic properties are maintained. In solution, butylamine‐capped nanocrystals exhibit reduced photoluminescence intensity with increasing TiO2 concentration but without any change in photoluminescence lifetime. Intriguingly, the Stern–Volmer plot depicts different slopes at low and high TiO2 concentrations, suggesting donor‐acceptor interaction through mixed static photoluminescence quenching and quenching sphere of action mechanism . Oleylamine‐capped nanocrystals in solution, on the other hand, show no interaction with TiO2, as indicated by consistent photoluminescence intensities and lifetimes before and after TiO2 addition. In films, both types exhibit decreased photoluminescence lifetime with TiO2, indicating enhanced donor–acceptor interaction, which is discussed in terms of electron transfer. TiO2 nanotubes enhance nonradiative recombination more in butylamine‐capped CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals, emphasizing the role of ligand chain length.

The space-charge region at CsPbBr3 NC⊆Pb-MOF p-n junction by self-sacrificing MOFs to selective detect NH3·H2O or Fe3+

The rational design of p-n heterojunction is highly desirable to optimize electron distribution and photocarriers’ transfer pathway at space-charge region, which would influence the fluorescence detection. Herein, the inorganic perovskite CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (CPB NCs) have been encapsulated into Pb-centered MOFs via simple wet-chemical self-sacrifice to construct a “turn-off” sensor for the sensitive detection of NH3·H2O or Fe3+ in aqueous solution. The Mott-Schottky plots (M-S), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculation have proved the formation of p-n junction between the derived CsPbBr3 and parent Pb-MOF. The CPB⊆Pb-MOF heterojunction has provided a strong platform to maintain high fluorescence performance and stability in aqueous solution as sensor. It is found that the static quenching process has affected the detection of Fe3+. More importantly, the occurrence of dynamic quenching with electron transfer is also verified by fluorescence lifetime, in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The phase transfer has taken major reason when being introduced by NH3·H2O. Fortunately, the 0.4CPB⊆Pb-MOF has exhibited best analytical performance for NH3·H2O or Fe3+. What’s more, it has been manufactured for the visual detection for NH3·H2O or Fe3+ in the real environmental water samples. Thereby, this perovskite based water detection system would broaden the application in point-to-point precise diagnostics.

Conjugated Zwitterionic Oligomers as Ligands on Perovskite Nanocrystals: Hybrid Structures with Tunable Interparticle Spacing.

Conventional ligands for CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs), composed of polar, coordinating head groups (e.g., ammonium or zwitterionic) and aliphatic tails, are instrumental in stabilizing the NCs against sintering and aggregation. Nonetheless, the aliphatic (insulating) nature of these ligands represents drawbacks with respect to objectives in optoelectronics, and yet removing these ligands typically leads to a loss of colloidal stability. In this paper, we describe the preparation of CsPbBr3 NCs in the presence of discrete conjugated oligomers that were prepared by an iterative synthetic approach and capped at their chain ends with sulfobetaine zwitterions for perovskite coordination. Notably, these zwitterionic oligofluorenes are compatible with the hot injection and ligand exchange conditions used to prepare CsPbBr3 NCs, yielding stable NC dispersions with high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY, >90%) and spectral features representative of both the perovskite core and conjugated ligand shell. Controlling the chain length of these capping ligands effectively regulated inter-NC spacing and packing geometry when cast into solid films, with evidence derived from both transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and grazing incidence X-ray scattering measurements.

In situ Surface Reconstruction in Pure Water by Ice‐Confined Freeze‐Thaw Strategy for High‐Performance Core–Shell Structural Perovskite Nanocrystals

AbstractConstructing core–shell structure is recognized as an effective approach for the conventional colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) to improve their stability and optical performance in optoelectronic applications. It is, however, still a challenge to develop green manufacture for core–shell lead halide perovskite NCs (PeNCs). Herein, an ice‐confined freeze‐thaw strategy using pure water solvent is devised, which results in the surface reconstruction of CsPbBr3 PeNCs thereby formatting the CsPb2Br5 shell on the CsPbBr3 core to achieve core–shell CsPbBr3@CsPb2Br5. The in situ formation of the CsPb2Br5 shell is attributed to the transformation of the intermediate polyhedral structure with the help of amphiphilic 4‐dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid ligand in the precursor solution. The PeNCs show ultrahigh photoluminescence quantum yield of 95%, remarkable stability and humidity‐resistance. Moreover, both light‐emitting diodes and stretchable fluorescence hydrogels based on the PeNCs exhibit a boosted optical performance and excellent operation stability. The organic solvent‐free and recyclability of this strategy pave a novel way to the environmentally friendly and large‐scale manufacture of high‐quality PeNCs for optoelectronic application.

Persistent enhancement of exciton diffusivity in CsPbBr3 nanocrystal solids.

In semiconductors, exciton or charge carrier diffusivity is typically described as an inherent material property. Here, we show that the transport of excitons among CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) depends markedly on how recently those NCs were occupied by a previous exciton. Using transient photoluminescence microscopy, we observe a striking dependence of the apparent exciton diffusivity on excitation laser power that does not arise from nonlinear exciton-exciton interactions or thermal heating. We interpret our observations with a model in which excitons cause NCs to transition to a long-lived metastable configuration that markedly increases exciton transport. The exciton diffusivity observed here (>0.15 square centimeters per second) is considerably higher than that observed in other NC systems, revealing unusually strong excitonic coupling between NCs. The finding of a persistent enhancement in excitonic coupling may help explain other photophysical behaviors observed in CsPbBr3 NCs, such as superfluorescence, and inform the design of optoelectronic devices.

Confinement of CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals into Extra-large-pore Zeolite for Efficient and Stable Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution.

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs), renowned for their outstanding optoelectronic properties, hold significant promise as photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the low stability and insufficient exposure of catalytically active sites of bulky MHPs seriously impair their catalytic efficiency. Herein, we utilized an extra-large-pore zeolite ZEO-1 (JZO) as a host to confine and stabilize the CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (3.4 nm) for boosting hydrogen iodide (HI) splitting. The as-prepared CsPbBr3@ZEO-1 featured sufficiently exposed active sites, superior stability in acidic media, along with intrinsic extra-large pores of ZEO-1 that were favorable for molecule/ion adsorption and diffusion. Most importantly, the unique nanoconfinement effect of ZEO-1 led to the narrowing of the band gap of CsPbBr3, allowing for more efficient light utilization. As a result, the photocatalytic HER rate of the as-prepared CsPbBr3@ZEO-1 photocatalyst was increased to 1734 μmol ⋅ h-1 ⋅ g-1 (CsPbBr3) under visible light irradiation compared with bulk CsPbBr3 (11 μmol ⋅ h-1 ⋅ g-1 (CsPbBr3)), and the long-term durability (36 h) can be achieved. Furthermore, Pt was incorporated with well-dispersed CsPbBr3 nanocrystals into ZEO-1, resulting in a significant enhancement in activity (4826 μmol ⋅ h-1 ⋅ g-1 (CsPbBr3)), surpassing most of the Pt-integrated perovskite-based photocatalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and charge-carrier dynamics investigation revealed that the dramatically boosted photocatalytic performance of Pt/CsPbBr3@ZEO-1 could be attributed to the promotion of charge separation and transfer, as well as to the substantially lowered energy barrier for HER. This work highlights the advantage of extra-large-pore zeolites as the nanoscale platform to accommodate multiple photoactive components, opening up promising prospects in the design and exploitation of novel zeolite-confined photocatalysts for energy harvesting and storage.

Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy of 14 and 2.1 nm CsPbBr3 nanoparticles: Free carrier vs exciton

CsPbBr3 nanoparticles with averaged size of 14 and 2.1 nm (named as 14 and 2 nmNP, respectively) are synthesized capping with the ligand of dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA). Using ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, free carriers in 14 nmNP characterize with the slow thermalization (∼0.76 ps) and long carrier cooling time (∼1 ns), which could be due to the phonon bottleneck effect. On the other hand, excitons are major photoexcitations in 2 nmNP, presenting with fast thermalization (<100 fs) and short cooling time (∼50 ps); this effective energy dissipation in 2 nmNPs can be ascribed to the involvement of phonons in DBSA ligands. In both 14 and 2 nmNP, we find that the photoexcitation accumulation leads to an increase in the bandgap that can be understood by the Burstein–Moss band filling effect. These results provide insights into the intrinsic photophysics of CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals with different confinement effects, supplying direct implications for optoelectronic applications.

Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Cocrystal-Encapsulated Perovskite Nanocrystals as Coreactant-Free Electrochemiluminescent Luminophore for the Detection of Uranium.

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals with excellent photophysical properties are promising electrochemiluminescence (ECL) candidates, but their poor stability greatly restricts ECL applications. Herein, hydrogen-bonded cocrystal-encapsulated CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs@NHS-M) were synthesized by using PeNCs as nuclei for inducing the crystallization of melamine (M) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS). The as-synthesized composite exhibits multiplicative ECL efficiencies (up to 24-fold that of PeNCs) without exogenous coreactants and with excellent stability in the aqueous phase. The enhanced stability can be attributed to the well-designed heterostructure of the PeNCs@NHS-M composite, which benefits from both moiety passivation and protection of the peripheral cocrystal matrix. Moreover, the heterostructure with covalent linkage facilitates charge transfer between PeNCs and NHS-M cocrystals, realizing effective ECL emission. Meanwhile, the NHS and M components act as coreactants for PeNCs, shortening the electron-transport distance and resulting in a significant increase in the ECL signal. Furthermore, by taking advantage of the specific binding effect between NHS-M and uranyl (UO22+), an ECL system with both a low detection limit (1 nM) and high selectivity for monitoring UO22+ in mining wastewater is established. The presence of UO22+ disrupted the charge-transfer effect within PeNCs@NHS-M, weakening the ECL signals. This work provides an efficient design strategy for obtaining stable and efficient ECLs from perovskite nanocrystals, offering a new perspective for the discovery and application of perovskite-based ECL systems.

Probing the Structural Degradation of CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals in the Presence of H2O and H2S: How Weak Interactions and HSAB Matter.

Structural degradation of all inorganic CsPbBr3 in the presence of moisture is considered as one of its major limitations to use as an active component in various light-harvesting and light-emitting devices. Herein, we used two similar molecules, H2O and H2S, with similar structures, to follow the decomposition mechanism of CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals. Interestingly, H2O acts as a catalyst for the decomposition of CsPbBr3, which is in contrast to H2S. Our experimental observations followed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the water molecule is intercalated in the CsPbBr3 perovskite whereas H2S is adsorbed in the (100) planes of CsPbBr3 by a weak electrostatic interaction. According to Pearson's hard-soft acid-base theory, both cations present in CsPbBr3 prefer soft/intermediate bases. In the case of the water molecule, it lacks a soft base and thus it is not directly involved in the reaction whereas H2S can provide a soft base and thus it gets involved in the reaction. Understanding the mechanistic aspects of decomposition can give different methodologies for preventing such unwanted reactions.

Dynamics of interfacial charge transfer between CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals and molecular acceptors for photodetection application

Perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) recently emerged as a suitable candidate for optoelectronic applications because of its simplistic synthesis approach and superior optical properties. For better device performance, the effective absorption of incident photons and the understanding of charge transfer (CT) process are the basic requirements. Herein, we investigate the interfacial charge transfer dynamics of CsPbBr3 NCs in the presence of different molecular acceptors; 7,7,8,8-Tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and 11,11,12,12 tetracyanonaphtho-2,6-quinodimethane (TCNAQ). The vivid change in CT dynamics at the interfaces of NCs and two different molecular acceptors (TCNQ and TCNAQ) has been observed. The results demonstrate that the ground state complex formation in the presence of TCNQ acts as additional driving force to accelerate the charge transfer between the NCs and molecular acceptor. Moreover, this donor (NCs)-acceptor (TCNQ, TCNAQ) system results in the higher absorption of incident photons. Finally, the photo detector based on CsPbBr3-TCNQ system was fabricated for the first time. The device exhibited a high on–off ratio (104). Furthermore, the CsPbBr3-TCNQ photodetector shows a fast photoresponse times of 180 ms/110 ms (rise/decay time) with a specific detectivity (D*) of 5.2 × 1011 Jones. The simple synthesis and outstanding photodetection abilities of this perovskite NCs-molecular acceptor system make them potential candidates for optoelectronic applications.

Room-Temperature Smart Sensor Based on Indium Acetate-Functionalized Perovskite CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals for Monitoring Electrolyte in Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Monitoring electrolyte components is an effective means of determining the safety status of lithium-ion batteries. In this study, indium acetate was taken as a ligand to functionalize perovskite CsPbBr3 nanocrystals, and then the room-temperature electrolyte sensor based on CsPbBr3 nanocrystals with ligand indium acetate was prepared. The sensor offers high response, long-term stability (21 days), and low detection limits for ethyl methyl carbonate (10 ppm), diethyl carbonate (10 ppm), and ethyl butyrate (1 ppm) gases at room temperature and boasts a fast response/recovery time (1500 ppm, 58.27/103.82 s, 33.58/40.62 s, and 45.05/103.08 s, respectively). Density functional theory results show that the gas sensitivity comes from the adsorption of an electrolyte, which changes the density-of-state distribution so that the electrical response curve changes. And using computational fluid dynamics simulation, it was found that the time required for gas detection by the built-in sensor (3.1 s) was 8.7 times shorter than that of the implantable sensor. This work provides inspiration and rationale for embedding and integrating room-temperature sensors into lithium-ion batteries to monitor safety and health conditions.

Hydrogen-Bonded Cocrystals Encapsulating CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals with Enhancement of Charge Transport for Photocatalytic Reduction of Uranium.

At present, poor stability and carrier transfer efficiency are the main problems that limit the development of perovskite-based photoelectric technologies. In this work, hydrogen-bonded cocrystal-coated perovskite composite (PeNCs@NHS-M) is easily obtained by inducing rapid crystallization of melamine (M) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) with PeNCs as the nuclei. The outer NHS-M cocrystal passivates the undercoordinated lead atoms by forming covalent bonds, thereby greatly reducing the trap density while maintaining good structure stability for perovskite nanocrystals. Moreover, benefiting from the interfacial covalent band linkage and long-range ordered structures of cocrystals, the charge transfer efficiency is effectively enhanced and PeNCs@NHS-M displays superior photoelectric performance. Based on the excellent photoelectric performance and abundant active sites of PeNCs@NHS-M, photocatalytic reduction of uranium is realized. PeNCs@NHS-M exhibits U(VI) reduction removal capability of up to 810.1mg g-1 in the presence of light. The strategy of cocrystals trapping perovskite nanocrystals provides a simple synthesis method for composites and opens up a new idea for simultaneously improving the stability and photovoltaic performance of perovskite.

CsZnPbBr3/ZnS core/shell perovskite nanocrystals for stable and efficient white light-emitting diodes.

The widespread applicability of perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) is impeded by their intrinsic instability. A promising solution is utilizing robust chalcogenides as a protective shell to shield the sensitive luminescent cores from the external environment. However, the inferior structural stability and surface lability of PeNCs usually lead to perovskite phase transition during shell growth. Herein, we introduced smaller Zn ions to partially replace Pb ions in perovskites, which reduces the Pb-X bond length and enhances the Pb-X bond energy for inner lattice stabilization. Simultaneously, extra oleylammonium bromide (OAmBr) was added to protect the labile surface of PeNCs by compensating for the detachment of ligands and the loss of surface Br ions. As a result, the dual strategies enable the epitaxial growth of a ZnS shell and significantly enhance the chemical stability of CsZnPbBr3/ZnS core/shell PeNCs. After three thermal cycles ranging from 300 to 450 K, the core/shell PeNCs retained 70% of their initial photoluminescence (PL) intensity. In stark contrast, the pristine CsPbBr3 PeNCs exhibit complete PL quenching after just the first temperature cycle. For practical applications, the green core/shell PeNCs were integrated with commercially available red-emitting phosphors on a blue-emitting InGaN chip to fabricate a white light-emitting diode (WLED), which demonstrates a high luminous efficacy (LE) of 61.3 lm W-1 and nearly constant Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates under varying operating currents.

Long live(d) CsPbBr3 superlattices: colloidal atomic layer deposition for structural stability.

Superlattice formation afforded by metal halide perovskite nanocrystals has been a phenomenon of interest due to the high structural order induced in these self-assemblies, an order that is influenced by the surface chemistry and particle morphology of the starting building block material. In this work, we report on the formation of superlattices from aluminum oxide shelled CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals where the oxide shell is grown by colloidal atomic layer deposition. We demonstrate that the structural stability of these superlattices is preserved over 25 days in an inert atmosphere and that colloidal atomic layer deposition on colloidal perovskite nanocrystals yields structural protection and an enhancement in photoluminescence quantum yields and radiative lifetimes as opposed to gas phase atomic layer deposition on pre-assembled superlattices or excess capping group addition. Structural analyses found that shelling resulted in smaller nanocrystals that form uniform supercrystals. These effects are in addition to the increasingly static capping group chemistry initiated where oleic acid is installed as a capping ligand directly on aluminum oxide. Together, these factors lead to fundamental observations that may influence future superlattice assembly design.
