A study was published recently that reported on the experimental results of the synthesis of ZSM-5 zeolite crystals in the (Na, TPA) system. The study reported crystallization curves, as well as the growth rates of the largest particle sizes and the computed nucleation rate over the synthesis time, determined by a technique previously developed. The authors concluded that the analysis of the results of their five experiments demonstrated that the nucleation of zeolite crystals was by both heterogenous and autocatalytic nucleation mechanisms. The analysis shown in this work demonstrates convincingly that the heterogeneous and autocatalytic nucleation mechanisms are not consistent with the experimental results and that the possibility that the autocatalytic nucleation mechanism occurs must be questioned.
